... and I have also said this so many times on this forum. First, the plethora of substandard radio stations has made access to the airwaves very easy - even by very illiterate people. By illiterate, I mean people who have no knowledge about the subjects on which they speak. This is worsened by the equally illiterate JSS graduates hungry for any type of jobs and parading as journalists because they know someone who owns the radio station. So what we see it that a topic is introduced and the rest of the time is call-in. Thanks to easy access to mobile phones; any idiot can call and say anything and get away with it. Doesn't Ghana have any communication agency that will check these substandard performance?

It is the state of the economy, the standard of living of the people and how people feel that could cause unrest and not what is merely said in the media. Back in the “aluta” (during Acheapong’era) days in Legon the students did not have the media we have today, and yet they organized demonstrations against the stupid “bottom power”, lack of direction, and corruption going in the regime. Unfortunately, today’s students have been bought with cars so have lost their conscience.
Does Wilhelmina know how much Obama bashing goes on every day on the right-wing Republican Radio/TV stations and also vice versa on the left-wing side to bash the GOP? But who cares because the people in the US are satisfied with their standard of living and don’t revolt. Those who want to demonstrate or protest issues are allowed to peacefully do so with police protection, of course, they are arrested when things get out of hand. That is just simply how democracy/free speech works – you can’t gag the people but instead have good policies and crowd management plans in place to prevent unrests. The court system can be used for libel/defamation of character etc. against anyone by the media. This is what will keep the media in check and to do fact checking before saying or writing anything.

NMC fines, working through the courts with slander/libel law suits, will get them to think before they speak or write. In any case most sensible and happy folks are not going to cause unrest due to what some silly person said on radio as was inferred by her below. That is what I was focusing on. Simply asking people to do something does not always work that is why we need strong institutions to enforce laws and policies.

Those substandard media houses must be shut and the government should monitor all the media houses in the country. Those illiterate and half baked journalists are the ones spewing garbage and rot on radio and t.v. thinking that they are exercising "freedom of speech". Another task for the Government is to educate those sub standard journalists, what is the meaning of "feedom of speech". Using "State of economy" mantra to instigate demonstrations and provoke unrest has to be checked outright. What does our people in the rural areas or simple to say, those "nkurase fo" got to do with "state of economy" if they don't hear garbages from the half baked news casters. They only go to their farm, uproot their cassava and prepare their fufu, and that's all!! Peace is what we need not those foolish talks and insults on the Ghanaian radio today.
