If that cunny dictator had set up strong institutions in the country and was accountable to the people of the land and had allowed democracy to function, we would have been miles ahead of our neighbours.
Turning Ghana into his personal property and a one-party state, gave birth to corruption which became an obsession for successive crooks who forced their way to power through foul means.
And 57 years of independence, we have a constitution that indemnifies brutal gangsters, professional stealers, terrorists and Woyomites, while cassava thieves get over 2 years jail terms.

Julor, why do you think Ghana is not dyfunctional? It is because of the strong institutions Nkrumah left behind. Otherwise things would have been gloomy than what we have now. It was because we had a good start but not managed well after the ill-fated feb 24th 1966 coup that we find ourselves in this mess. Nkrumah put in place institutions that still guard and guide us. From Bank of Ghana; Ghana coomercial bank, Ghana news agency, Police Academy, Military Academy, SIC....Nkrumah left behind good educational system and health facilities nation wide e.g. Ghana Medical school; nursing training at K'si KATH etc. We had a functioning justice system because of the Ghana law school he instituted at legon. Don't blame Nkrumah, blame those who arrested our economic and industrial development.

Nobody can hide the light and true destiny of the great nation of Akan. they use all kinds of schemes and tricks to undermine or deny a proper standard to us but we shall never surrender. we shall change and adapt as like the Israelis we are the chosen people of God and he in his great design has made us diverse but unified in spirit. the ashantis like the tribe of Judah are and will remain an integral part of our being to to attack any one part we all end up feeling it sooner or later. they have succeed in turning some of our chiefs and kings against us and work for their evil ungodly agenda but we still see clearly . God has brought us into the 21st century and with that a new system of governance and state of mind based on democracy since it is HE alone who blesses the individuals with the gift of leadership wisdom and justice irrespective of status at birth. he has shown us the blue print of the way forward in the bible and other holy books and the time has come to free ourselves from this man made bondage called Ghana. just as in the Ukraine we must fight so the truth will come out , fear not the battle as they will crumble like the walls of Jericho . cast away our so called fake leaders and politicians who are nothing but cowards and like our enemies fear even their own shadows . yes God has put a million fears in their empty bodies as he who does not fear the Lord , the Lord will ensure all fears of the world will reside in him. They threaten us with superstition , juju and what have you and we say fuck you and go to hell as the divine power is with us . Yes all the tribes of Akan are fingers on the same hands and God has ordained we remain united so our strength and light will be visible throughout the whole world and universe , our time has come . everyday its becoming clearer and clearer to all children of Akan that we must prepare mentally for a battle of freedom . they come with tricks that say we must take a non Akan as our leader because its nice ? do they not think that out of 30 million Akans we can not find sensible down to earth leaders and warriors to lead our own people to our own destiny? a govt of the people and by the people is what the 21st century democracy is all about . let them continue to play with the consensus and other figures that justify their fantasy and enable them to marginalize the participation of the Akan majority in the Affairs of their own land , to marginalize us thus preventing us to afford a better standard for our people . The had of God has given them pestilence after pestilence but they refuse to let our people go , soon they will be swept away like chaff in the hurricane of fury . Long live the republic of Akan and don't you forget it as now the Fanti speakers, Twi speakers, Ashantis and other tribes of Akan are now one .

As hard as some of us try to be PROUD of being BLACK and strong, our own people have MESSED us up so bad that it is turning to be "being ashamed of being black." WHY & HOW? Look at the many things listed by one Nana Ansah as some of the things started by our first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Whether his list is correct or not and whether some of the projects never even got started before his untimely death, still it points all of us in the right direction to be self-sufficient and do for our damn selves.
Now, no matter how much Africans "badmouth" Mr. BOBO (the White man), he did something good, though. “Where the hell did Dr. Nkrumah get all the money to start all these projects?” ANSWER: That was the money the White man left Ghana in 1957 before they left our shores. Note: Ghana's population at the time of Independence was around 6 million—most of the people were farmers, fishermen and petty traders; we didn't have any good tax base and didn't have many corporations paying taxes to the state. The World Bank and IMF were NOT well established then to loan Ghana billions of dollars. So, to be honest, the White man managed our economy then very well to amass that wealth to leave Nkrumah that much money. The Blackman would have left the country $0.00.
Then come 1957: Knock, knock, knock—Hi, come on in!! Then enters the wicked and corrupt BLACK MAN and hell broke loose and things started going downhill ever since—even with increases in revenues from cocoa, gold, other minerals, truckloads of loans from the World Bank, IMF, other nations, etc., etc., NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK and we're always BROKE!!!
After some years living abroad, Germany, Canada and mostly in the United States, I’ve seen and experienced how the White man takes care of their people, manage their economy and thus create a huge middle class (which spurs the economic engine), manage infrastructure, government agencies, education, etc., etc., etc., then you can easily conclude that the “black man has, indeed, wicked mind, is corrupt, selfish, incompetent, clueless, and unfit to govern even if all the money in the world is entrusted to his care—he will still mismanage it or squander it and turn around to ask for more—and that’s what we’re experiencing in Ghana and Africa as a whole!! So, Professor Akosa is correct in his assessment—everything is BLACK in Africa, nothing shines!!

Iwas a witness when all the nonsense against Nkrumah was going on. Tribal sentiments and what nots contributed to his overthrow but if Kwame were to be here when Kotoka and his traitors moved south bound to take the =Flagstaff house that day it would have nbeen a good show of civilian leadershiop against dictatorial tribal mentatality after all where arte those who coined the overthrow. They all died unnatural death .

Ghana would be better-off when ruled by a Dictator with a vision and passion for National development than a Reckless and Irresponsible Democrat who will sell his people for a pittance!
What do you know about Democracy? Do you think Democracy is all about ELECTIONS and allowing any FOOL to rule? Please, excuse my language but I am getting a little impatient about the wrong use to the words "Dictatorship and Democracy".
These two words "Dictatorship and Democracy"are the very propogander terms the West has coined, since immemorial, to describe any leader who has a vision to enlighten and free its people from their Oppressive Rule and White Supremacy.
If you put your hands behind you and fall flat to worship them, you become their darling boy, but any attempt you make to regain your God-given dignity as a human being, they first condemn you by titles and they follow with your assassination.
Now tell me who portrays the characteristics of a Dictator and a Terrorist than your Colonial Masters, who use their Military Might to brutalize other nations and rub them of the natural resources?

Nkrumah, thanks to ashante stupidity and hatred was hounded out, which in his absence brought in unparalleled US and Canadian aide to Ghana. So please tell me the one good thing that came out of all that instead of your silly inscriptions of dictator this and that? or was it interested selfishness, thievery and or, climate control? Ghana has instead suffered in your compulsory and steady desire to distribute to the rest of us your stupidity and backwardness.
Please ponder on this, all victories breed hate, especially when it is over a pretentious, unrepentant superior can be foolish and fatal. This is why every pseudonymic punk whose correctness of truth is subordinated to no laudable purpose, the welfare and credit to society, must be found and fought tooth and nail to stem their distribution of stupidity and lack of acceptance toward others.
Having had their chances what did they bring us? We instead had Communal Labor and Ghost ledger for their pupil teachers, and shoeshine boys loitering about in Aggege ALL being paid in their contempt for independence. Market Queens with bleached faces, kalabule and aliens compliance orders became the normal.
Blame Dankwa who couldn't even organize a successful local/district campaign to ever win any election yet had wanted to impose himself on good Ghanaians.
Kwasea you definitely miss Nkrumah, because since his absence every one who was deemed a fit, has been totally insufficient. Yet the sky was the limit, when he was around, even God is witness to this.
What is your wasted life to me? continue to regret the past since your eyes are just beginning to open like the majority of your ilk, which are slow indeed and uncertain. Unlike you Nkrumah had access to ideas of a different ilk and in fact listened to a different drummer and opinion of several competent to advise. If his ideas were that bad, why is it still maturing? Are you that slow and uncertain?
Conjecture this, Nkrumah is no longer with us, since you cannot do without him, here is a nice compromise go and fetch yourself out of him. You may find a childish joy!

Do you need to be told that it was Nkrumah and his CPP that introduced corruption onto the shores of Maaame/Daaavi Ghana, you villainous doghearted miscreant ?
And what makes you think that anyone who hated Nkrumah's dictatorship is an Ashante, you raving necropheliac maggot lover ?
Now, if I were to be so ignorant and duncish like you, I would have told you that it was Ewes who overthrew your tin god Nkrumah; okay, you sewer dwelling penile colonist ?

One-party state and any one he thought was a threat to his tyranny including children, was imprisoned for life and tortured to death. Boye-Doe was only 15 when Nkrumah imprisoned him for life for no reason.
Nkrumah poisoned the mind of chilren with his satanic Young Pioneers. All one heard on Ragio Ghana throught the day was 'Osagyefo the President'. The best thing that has ever happened to Ghana was the overthrow of the evil tyrant Kwame Nkrumah.

Bribery, corruption, tribalism, incompetent, Lack of vision, Paper tigers, and no policy and standard in the country, Filth, no sanitation, water, electricity and education system which are not tied to the socio-economic development of the country. Afrifa sold us for $50,000.00 while Rawlings sold all the companies Nkrumah started to his wife and cronies. How ignorant can you be. When people never thought of Nuclear Energy Dr. Nkrumah planned it in 1963(Kwabenya) and now NDC and NPP has sold all the lands to thier party members. Where is the cocoa research institiute at Tafo and Accra. Ghana, Rise up!! Wake up!! In this situation in which we find ourselves today, it would even be unwise for Nana Addo/NPP to talk about free SHS if he is in power today. Two hundred SHS are not the nation's priority even though building 200 SHS is good. How can we look on to see Mahama waste our little resources on 200 SHS while we all know that he cannot effectively complete this project. We have no water , electricity, roads, food, and good healthcare (basic amenities. We have not been able to bring quality to our existing SHS why do we continue building more low quality SHS? Only God knows the type of SHS Mahama is going to put up. I learned in this article that they are waiting for support from the World Bank Which means, the they have not even received a dollar from the World Bank but they are cutting sod just in the name of politics and propaganda.

Cannery, Accra Cocoa Products Factory - he gave them to Mrs Rawlings, and he run away overseas on the pretext of sickness just when the Auditor-General's report raised questions and the court wanted him to provide answers!!! The P/NDC divestiture has caused catastrophic unemployment in Ghana. Before the divestiture, graduate unemployment was unknown in Ghana! A good plan would have envisaged reorganization of the state enterprises for either genuine privatization to genuinely capable investors, or ownership by joint private-state partnership or radical organization for efficiency and profit with ownership retained by the state. None of these happened under the plan devised by Nduom. The number of jobs created by Nduom pales in comparison to the number of jobs lost by his divestiture plan!!!

We are independent just to mismanage anything we see because that is what we are good at. If a man of 57 years, still depends on his father to feed his family, what is the message then?
Yesterday, we heard that "Donor" nations have suspend some millions of dollars and we are complaining bitterly. "Donors" from where? What did Nkrumah say on the podium? "We can manage our own affairs so, why donors support? Why can't we use our own resources or generate internal revenue to spur any development in Ghana? If these "Donor" nations are as corrupt as we are, where will they get the money to give us?
We are behaving like "Brain dead" people. Using our brains is very hard for us. The educated ones will descend and try vainly to rubbish anything we say but they are the ones to blame for all these mishaps. Since independent, how many uneducated people have been in government?
Ghana is retrogressing and the blame rests squarely on the heads of "the elite" who are in top position of government.

For a while now the NDC as a party worship J.J. Rawlings as some kind of hero even after the abuse, destruction and the stealing and mayhem from him and his team including using the wife to seize most of state-owned factories. Then came NPP and the Kufour team which polished the art of giving away anything Ghana for a fraction of its value while playing the house negro so his masters in Europe and elsewhere could forgo some of our debt; his entire era was lived under the dictates of international agencies and their strings attached aid. The gull of it all is that we have people in the NPP who have conferred unto themselves the tag “party of intellectuals” To call the Kufour administration and the majority NPP at the time thieves is an understatement or mild and yet there a whole lot classroom educated clowns in the NPP who would publish articles on this free for all ghanaweb proclaiming their trashy articles to be the truth as they see it.
Where in Ghana can anyone point to a list of houses and properties owned by Nkrumah and or anyone in his immediate family? How many in Ghana and outside Ghana now cannot point to a host of properties owned by members of the NDC and or NPP? How many in Ghana do not know of Kufour’s ill-gotten properties and or assets seized and kept by J.J. Rawlings and co? Yet Ghanaians in Accra-Tema , the largest metro area in Ghana continue to enjoy Nkrumah era "motorway" harbor etc. even as they peddle their trash of rewritten history of Ghana to brain dead followers. Prof Akosa is not only exposing the failures of leaders we have had since the 1966 coup but pulls the cover off the eyes of the majority of Ghanaians so influenced by tribal loyalties and indebted to political parties they have lost any sense of truth and or love of or for nation. As such these idiots living amongst us in Ghana and in the Diaspora cannot see when they make fools of themselves and of other Ghanaians even as they shamelessly use facilities built under the CPP era that has withstood the test of time because they were quality built the way a leader like Nkrumah would want it to be.
Compare those structures designed and built under Nkrumah’s CPP era with those built under those who have come since and no one will deny the thoughtful process and the lack thereof in those driven by tribe and politics. It is only fools and yes they are fools who would pretend there are no political prisoners in any nation even amongst those nations we so prefer but can never. Have people in the USA not gone to prison of their political activities? Has this not been the case in every nation across Europe? Yet to hear it from Ghanaians here at home and or in the Diaspora Nkrumah did not have the moral right to imprison members of the opposition party hell bent on chaos and anarchy to ensure progress came slowly for the CPP. These are the people who jump for joy as they drive by the edifice of an Indian architecture their demigod Kufour built for Ghana as a replacement state house. Yes Ghana is an apology of what not to do or become as an independent nation but it is so because of people who came out from underneath slavery and continue to live with shackles on their mind. It is those shackles on the heads and minds of the people in the UP/NPP tradition that preclude them from having logical thought processing. Why else would people in the NPP/UP/UGCC/matemeho/Dumbo ideology cry foul against any other system of governance and yet every last one of these yahoos own things manufactured in Communist China, Russia, South Africa and others? They have not seen an intelligent principled Nkrumah with foresight, ideas and ideals they will not hate even as they embrace the very results from communist China, Russia, India, Brazil, South Africa and other nations they will not kneel before.

The state as a the main investor in our economy was in vogue at the time of independence. We as nationals, even then, did not patronise what we were producing because we regarded them as inferior.
This coupled with the fact that these industries became tools of political patronage, meant that these industries we remember with nostalgia were not viable.
Until the structural adjustment in 1983, we were spending huge amounts in our budgets in subsidising non-priductive industries.
Those who speak with such force as Professor Akosa does have not told the full story of why these industries failed. It was just basic principles of economics. The demand was not there. This was because we felt the goods were inferior; few were earning appreciable incomes to sustain demand; and management was ceded to political cronies.
Our problems started a long time ago; they have just come to a head now.
We are truly not independent but this is not because we allowed industries to fail. We have been dependent on imports in those early independent days. That is why we ran out foreign reserves very quickly and that by 1961, import licences had been introduced.
The impression should not be given that somehow we started loftily. This same point became the contention between Prof Arthur Lewis and Dr Nkrumah. Arthur Lewis wanted development of farming and the rural areas first to create the demand for industrial goods; Dr Nkrumah wanted industrialisation first before rural development. The industries came alright but alas there was not sufficient demand to sustain them.

You are wrong, Ohemeng.
The state industries were not all managed well, which led to the state subsidies. Nigeria and the rest of West Africa was an untapped market. Nkrumah's industrialisation policy went hand-in-hand with African unity. Nkrumah saw that African countries were not economically viable as individual states - Africa as an entity carried far greater economic and political clout.
Prof Akosa is absolutely right - we must learn to run our own affairs, instead of this dependence on foreign investment.

Do you report to work on time ?
Do you spend quality time with your students teaching them to know what they are suppose to know? How many of the post graduate students/doctors under your care were able to progress to become pathologist? Well PhD syndrome is normal in Ghana
Don't you spend part of the paid time doing your own thing ?
What about nepotism are you not part of it ?
Then you have no right to complain because a nation's ability to succeed is dependent on how dedicated the citizens are.

The unity of our dear country must not be compromised for any political gain. We must respect every tribe in the country and avoid playing on the minds of those who have not been lucky to have any formal education for our selfish earns. Any politician who is sensible and love GHANA must stop pointing at where TRIBAL POLITICS might have come from, because that will not take us anywhere. Another person will come and point at another direction. The fact is that, today we all know it is not a good thing to do and must be discouraged, rather than use it to our selfish advantage. The unity of our dear nation is more important than the survival of any political grouping. Ghana has been there long before any of these parties (which have a lot of selfish and insincere individuals) were formed. Ghana will be there when they are long gone. Let us sincerely pledge our loyalty to GHANA rather than a political party. How sincere are most of the members of these parties when it comes to stewardship with things of the nation? RESPECT AND EMBRACE EVERY TRIBE. In that lies the STRENGTH of OUR NATION. With that we will DEVELOP, HAVE PEACE and be WEALTHY. LONG LIVE GHANA.

Yet some bankrupt soldiers and police men tookUs Dollars from the CIA to overthrow our Osagyefo, rendering our independence alomost meaningless today. I was quite knowledgeable enough in Middle School Form 4 to appreciate what the African of the 21st Century was about. So the almighty qq is: Who causam?? Anather QQ is: Why have all the politicians who succeeded Nkrumah not seen the independent thoughts of Osagyefo to emulate him. The Cedi's drop is surely attributed to over-reliance on imports rather than have import-substitution industries. Today's politicians want to import finished products of crude in order to gain kick backs. Where is Osagyefo's TOR?? We've failed, and now a failed state with no law working. We allow fraudsters like US Group of Companies to outscheme innocent Ghanaians while BOG and govt looks on; Okada is banned by an Act of Parliament, yet govt sits aloof to see citizens slaughtered daily on our roads. Is this not a banana Republic??

The first opportunity for Ghana to develop was offered to Nkrumah on a silver platter by capitalist Great Britain. He blew it because of opportunism.
J.B Danquah and company had the right ideas:democracy for political stability to attract investments, and privatization and a mixed market economy which have guaranteed others speedy and sustainable prosperity.
The plight of Ghana has always been the curses of dictatorship and socialism that Nkrumah put on Ghana.
Our history is repleted with efforts to democratize(a correction of dictatorship) and privatization(a correction of Nkrumah's socialism mania).
Corruption also started with Nkrumah.Although,Nkrumah himself was incorruptible,he failed to straighten up Krobo Adusei and his confederates in corruption ministers of state.
As we celebrate our 57 years of independence,it is my fervent hope that Ghanaians will reflect deeply on how they elect our representatives. It is a sad commentary that we are still in the doldrums of political and socioeconomic development.
With all the human and natural resources at our disposal, economic prosperity should be the birthright of every Ghanaian:natural born or naturalized.
The fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves that these so-called international officials continue to meddle in our affairs as an independent nation.
We have theoretical presidents and appointees who cannot translate rudimentary and common knowledge to practice and solve our problems.
Square pegs in round holes who have vied and are vying for leadership positions but are clueless about what leadership entails.
Until those people change their"what- is -in- for me attitude which undermines one's ability to take the right decision and which is the strongest motivation for corruption,Ghana will not make any headway.
I wish all of you an enjoyable independence day celebration.
We should thank God for given us a land flowing with milk and honey, but which is not harvesting the milk and honey for the benefit of Ghanaians.
Long Live Ghana!

Thank you Prof Akosa. If anyone wants to understand the state in which we are today the one must understand the rivalry between Nkrumah and JB Danquah, the diametrically opposed political philosophies of Nkrumah and Danquah which persist up to today and is undermining the progress of the country. The rivalry between Nkrumah and JB Danquah was very simple: Nkrumah wanted the total liberation of the Ghanaian and for that matter the African, i.e, freedom from the whiteman and freedom from the blackman {local feudalism presided over by chiefs (traditional authority)} in order to develop on his or her own, with or without assistance.
JB Danquah (I use JB Danquah here to represent himself, his party and followers) wanted partial freedom for the Ghanaian: freedom from the whitemen but under the rule of the feudal Lords (chiefs; traditional authority) in an alliance with the whiteman (under the guise of liberalism). This, to some extent was understandable as he was trying to protect his interest and the interest of his dynasty. But was it in the best interest of the ordinary Ghanaian in an era of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to replace one form of oppression with another?
Fortunately or unfortunately JB Danquah (I mean his party and followers) won with the overthrow of Nkrumah, having set him up to fail. And that meant undoing or destroying all that Nkrumah had done for the emancipation of the Ghanaian, including the industrial foundation that Nkrumah had laid, which in effect also meant returning the blackman into (neo)colonialism and dependency.
Doubtless, Akosa is spot on, and if we hate what we are seeing today the alternative is not farfetched: Go back to what Nkrumah wished for his people: TRUE INDEPENDENCE which he tried to preserve and protect by any means including the Prevention Detention Act (PDA).
Some of us might hate Nkrumah for what he did, especially the detention of our fathers, uncles and brothers but it will be foolhardy to hate TRUE INDEPENDENCE which he wished for us, worked hard for and was imprisoned on our behalf with the other members of the BIG SIX. I do not even think that Nkrumah wanted the PDA but he had no option, confronted with reactionary lawyers, sociologists and traditionalists (JB Danquah, Busia etc.) who least understood or did not have proactive political philosophies to advance the emancipation project; but whose aim was to replace one form of oppression with another.
There is a saying which goes like this:
At the age of sixteen if you are not pretty;
At the age of thirty if you are not strong;
At the age of forty if you are not wise;
Then you'd better forget.
Ghana is 57 years old today, (and I wish all Ghanaians a HAPPY BIRTHDAY), and by this saying we would be expected to throw in the towel but a nation is not like an individual. We are still young compared to other countries that have been in existence for hundreds of years. We can mend our ways, even if it means going back to start from where we went astray. Sank?fa, y?nkyiri! There is nothing wrong with going back to starting all over again. What we need is the courage to hide our pride and admit our mistakes; the wisdom to chart a new path; and the determination to succeed, united and patriotic in our diversity.
Long Live Ghana! Long Live the Founding Fathers, including J. B. Danquah and Kwame Nkrumah, all of whom we owe our gratitude for their respective roles in giving birth to GHANA, our MOTHERLAND!

“the significance of [independence] is such that, today it’s the World Bank and all the UN agencies that think for us. It’s the various Embassies in this country that think for us.”
Spot on Prof Akosa. It is shocking the way foreigners dominate our country. Our economy is controlled by foreign multinationals which are making massive profits to the detriment of our people. Anglogold is so rich it has built a private airport in our country, and has pointedly refused to pay an extra 10% windfall tax. Tullow and its partners hold 85% share of the Jubilee oilfields - the Tullow group profit rose by a whopping 168% in the first year of operating the field. The multinationals dictate their own terms to us in signing contracts, and will not fulfill their tax obligations.
Our economic policy is dictated by the IMF and World Bank, surrogates of USA and Europe. Donor agencies with impunity forced Dr Esther Bediako out of office as Government Statistician and installed Dr Philomena Nyarko in her place, promoting her above her superiors. They did this riding rough shod over our constitution which mandates our President to appoint the GS.
Ambassadors and ministers of the Big world powers have all too easy access to our President and his ministers of state. The plethora of foreign-controlled NGOs operating in our country have a field day influencing policy with the connivance of Ghanaian front men. They sent a list of 30 women to President Mahama after the last election asking him to appoint more women as ministers. Some women ministerial appointments are to be found on this list.
We must begin to think and solve problems ourselves instead of relying on Foreign countries. 57 years after achieving political independence, let us pursue true political and economic independence.

YEARS OF EXACTLY WHAT? By CAMERON DUODU
QUOTE: "Russian historians past and present have often liked to contemplate Russia's role in the community of nations. . . [One] view, emerging after the bloody decades of revolution, civil war and Stalinist purges [in Russia] was that Russia, with its tragic history, was meant to provide a cautionary example to other nations [of] how not to arrange their affairs.
"I would like to join this debate with my own... notion of Russia's role on the world stage....Today, Russia seems to act more like a global buffoon. At the circus, acts by acrobats, tightrope walkers and animal tamers are usually larded with appearances by clowns, whose job is to mimic and ridicule all those nerve-wracking, death-defying stunts...
"Even the Russian presidency is faintly clownish. Russians still groan at the mention of a tipsy Boris Yeltsin conducting a German military band... [But] if truth be told, the story of [Russia's] current president is no less amusing. We have here, an obscure former KGB colonel, hand-picked as heir apparent, in a back-room deal by Kremlin insiders and wealthy oligarchs. Just four months later, he was catapulted to supreme power and soon turned savagely on his own benefactors....
"My buffoon state theory goes to show that the oft-heard accusation that the Russian political and bureaucratic classes are utterly incompetent is just plain wrong. Clowns are usually fantastic acrobats, jugglers and tightrope walkers in their own right. In some ways, they are even better and more versatile than "serious" performers. They just do it differently. Russian leaders, too, are skilled -- but they are skilled in buffoonery. [So] the antics of the Buffoon State may be amusing for outside observers, but not for the Russian people. " UNQUOTE (Russian Buffoon State Is No Laughing Matter By Alexei Bayer -- Moscow Times May. 18 2005)
----------------------------
No, dear reader, this article is not about the Russian invasion of the Crimea region of the Ukraine Republic - although President Putin's decision to use force to try and reverse the movement of Ukraine towards membership of the European Union, can turn out to be an own goal of clownish proportions.
No, what amuses me is the idea of Ghana trotting out its state
paraphernalia on Thursday, 6 March, to celebrate with "pomp and "bunting", 57 years of its independence.
Have you wondered: "What exactly shall we be celebrating,?"
I was born in a normal-sized village during the colonial times whose end we shall be celebrating. This village was sited by my ancestors in such an idyllic spot - between two rivers - that on one's return from one's farm, one could make a cup out of green leaves, dip it straight into either river, and drink clean, healthy, cold water to quench one's thirst.
There was no guinea-worm in that water. There were no cholera germs, either. So no-one in my age group ever died of a water-borne disease.
But today, both the rivers in my village are DEAD! One was killed by stupid farmers who cut down the trees on its banks, that protected it from the sun's rays. They also made farms too close to the river and thereby dried up the underground water-tables that filled the river with new water after each rainfall.
The other river, however, was killed by the deliberate action of galamsey operators. They came in the night, guided by people from the village itself. They used machines, hoes and spades, to turn the river-bed upside down. They panned the sand from the river-bed, using mercury and other poisonous chemicals, in a search for gold from the sand.
One day, the river was there, making its serene way to join the Birem at Nsutem. The next day, it was going nowhere. Only enormous holes were scattered along its path'. The holes quickly filled up with mud and greenish algae. Other holes just gaped open, attracting poisonous serpents.
Not a soul had seen the galamsey operators at work. Except their murderous fellow conspirators, who brought them into their own village, and directed them to the river that had sustained their lives for years. Ever heard of such sublime and monumental stupidity?
Now, I am ashamed to admit that if we lived in colonial times, this could not have happened. The district CID, based at
Kyebi, would have been told by the District Commissioner that if Birem had been targeted at Kyebi and elsewhere by the galamsey operators, then its tributaries, such as Supong, would also be targeted. And the DC would have sent the CID waiting for the galamsey operators on the banks of Supong.
But today, our CID is only interested in what politicians say. Let a Kennedy Agyapong bray like a donkey and the CID will be on his neck. But destroy a river bequeathed to the people ''of a village thousands of years ago? Sorry, it is not CID work. Public safety? That is a political determination, no?
Maybe you should go and tell the Environmental Protection Agency? But the Environmental Protection Agency would almost certainly tell you that its job is to provide guidelines to the State to pass legislation to protect the environment. The EPA, you see, has no powers to enforce those laws once they are passed. There are no environmental police, you understand? There are only the regular police, and they are under the Ministry of the Interior.
My friends, this is the country whose independence anniversary I am supposed to celebrate on Thursday? If I were to celebrate that anniversary, would I not be celebrating the activities of a "buffoon state" that is so incredibly incompetent that it cannot prevent the destruction of the water-sources of its own citizens? A buffoon state that does not even know that it is from a healthy populace, which drinks obtains good, safe water, that taxes - both direct and indirect - can be levied to pay for the life-styles of the 87 ministers and deputy ministers, as well as the 700 or so presidential staffers, who milk the exchequer each day?
This is the visceral level at which I can illustrate my inability to take any pleasure in our having become an independent state.
Mind you, I was not always this despondent. Independence for Ghana meant that at the age of 23, I was doing an editor's job at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation once done by a white man seconded from the BBC. I had a brand new sports car. And one more promotion would have catapulted me into a Senior Editor's position, in which I would have been given an official bungalow furnished and maintained by the PWD!.
We enjoyed these privileges and worked hard to justify them. In my case, in spite of my accelerated promotions, I was head-hunted away from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to become editor of Drum Magazine, the largest-selling monthly paper in Ghana. My housing allowance alone was as good as my GBC salary. And, again I had Ghana's independence to thank for that.
All over Ghana, young people like myself were being given such opportunities to show what they could do. Peter Dorkenoo and Tom Agyare were soon flying the VC-10, one of the most modern jet aircraft available at the time. Bank managers, electrical engineers, brilliant University dons - name them - Ghana was providing them. Our standard was to use what the British had bequeathed to us well enough to show we were equal to anyone in the world. And we added this most palatable of sauces: we were doing it for ourselves, unlike the British who were hired to serve our country, but knew they would eventually go back home.
Where, oh where, is that haughty spirit we cultivated in 1957?
Today, we are ruled by people some of whom are hardly-literate, although many have been certified as degree-holders.
People to whom smelly gutters don't matter.
People who are not concerned if hospitals have no doctors or life-saving drugs.
People to whom schools under trees are acceptable.
People to whom schools with toilets "fit for cows" can be ignored because their own children go to expensive schools that have flush toilets.
People who can drive over a stretch of road, only 30-kilometres long, that has lain unmotorable for six years and yet think that that is all right because they drive robustly-built 4 by 4s with windows closed for air-conditioning.
People who can connive to steal state funds by refusing to defend the state when unscrupulous thieves sue the state and obtain judgements debts for no work done.
Reader, if I were to join in celebrating the antics of this "buffoon state", I would be telling my grand-children and their friends that I too -- like those who I and my fellow citizens are unfortunate enough to be governed by -- am a buffoon.I cannot do that..

Let us study the way the Swiss practice their demacracy if we want to maintain party politics. Otherwise let make all parliamentarians independent candidates. Then in parliament they can choose among themselves who should be the overall leader.
By this parliamentarians will be free to decide on issues in parliament. Secondly they will consult their electorate and be accountable to them as well. This will as eliminate all the rivalry.
