To ignore our brains and suggest that "prayers" is the way to rescue our currency not only smacks our intelligence but makes mockery of our humanity!
What makes it more alarming is when a doctor---who wants be a president, concurs such an unorthodox measure to liberate our cabbage!
This a big sign of desperation! I would pardon Duncan Williams for such suggestion but for Arthur K to agree with him? PLEASE!

I've argued and told pple that, if you are a believer in the supernatural, then it'd be hypocritical to criticise Bishop Duncan-Williams unless, of course, you are liberal believer. But that's not the position Arthur K is arguing here. His is a rationalisation based on faith, the efficacy of prayer with references to precedences.

In logic, the fact that the sun rises from the east for the last eon years (if you are a Christian, the last 6000+ yrs) doesn't mean it'd rise from the east tomorrow. So cos the Americans had done something since their indep doesn't make that thing correct!

Besides, Arthur K displayed a lack of appreciation for the rhetorical ethics religion plays in the WASP culture of the US, a role excellently explained in Marimba Ani's Yurugu:....

In brief, this justification is simply another indulgence in the religious obscurantism of the wannabe, less developing Ghanaian elite whose psyche is firmly rooted in the Weberian primitive substantive rationality.

Been planning to write an article of my own on this issue, so won't be elaborate here.

Of course, truth and logical validity always don't match, just as statistical proof isn't always the truth but it is still not unacceptable to contradict the "truth values" they hold without proper derivation negating them. I don't want to debate FUE Logic with you, as I went beyond that. What I am pointing out is the utter pity that the reasoning of our so-called elite is NOT even up to the level of FUE Logic, as it is flawed on all counts!
Above all, their cosmological evolution is still at the primitive, substantive level of their unlettered ancestors in spite of their "plenty, plenty education"! Yes, where emotional intelligence reigns supreme instead of rational and scientific intelligence!

He Built factories, it wasn´t prayers, He built Tema Township, Tema Harbour, Akosombo Dam, Tema Oil Refinery, Adomi Bridge, Akomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, University of cape Coast, Tema Motoway, the only and durable motoway in Ghana, he did all these not through prayers, but with the BRAIN, just as you mentioned, this is what the Chinese, japanese, canadians, Germans and all the advanced countries were doing.

Doc, I think you have misunderstood those of us who criticised the Duncan William command on the cedi. It's not because we do not believe in God or His/Her omnipotence. On the contrary, and again, because we also believe in the saying that "God helps those who help themselves". We cannot expect God to stop the cedi falling when the leadership of the country are bereft of good economic policies (fiscal and monetary).

If you read my article on Sunday ("Is President Mahama Already Eating the Bones"), I gave some examples of policies and actions that the Mahama government has implemented that has led to the pressure on the cedi against the dollar. That is the crust of the matter and therefore unless these policies issues are addressed, no prayers will result in the appreciation of the cedi. Action must accompany prayers.

If you seriously believe that Duncan Williams command will work without any other measures, then good luck. Do you believe that had Ghanaians not taken appropriate measures such as asking the two presidential candidates, the political parties and their supporters to accept the results of the elections to ensure that the country remained peaceful during and after the elections but just prayed to God, there would have been peace?

Could you answer this question? Why despite Ghanaians praying to God daily for the economy to improve, Ghana's economy remains weak? The answer is simple. It's because prayers alone will not improve the economy. Above all, Ghanaians must support their prayers with a hard work, a commitment to fight corruption, to reduce indiscipline and respect the laws, rules and regulations; for the leadership to develop and implement effective socio-economic and political policies, etc in support of the prayers. How can Ghana's economy improve with all the corruption after praying to God? How can the country develop with all the lawlessness and impunity in the country after praying to God? Remember, discipline is a cardinal principle of every faith.

It's actually hypocritical for Duncan Williams to believe that his command will work without the necessary policy implementation. He knows himself that no matter how many prayers he offers to God, if his congregation do not come to church weekly and daily to give offerings he would not be rich.

God has given us as humans to be rational, analytical, critical, etc in our actions but not to follow blindly so that we are not misled. Challenging the absurdity is not hypocritical or ungodly.

Obed, there are different types of prayer and different things you do when praying. There are times you have to command in prayer. The bible says, 'thou shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee...' (Job 22v28). The word 'decree' here also means, 'declare' or 'command'. So you can decree or command in prayer. When you are commanding, you are not directly praying to God but rather directly addressing the challenge you are confronted with. And if God has commanded you to do so, then His integrity is committed to confirm or bring to pass what He has He has instructed you to command. Jesus commanded Lazarus to come forth. He commanded the sea and the wind and they obeyed Him. He spoke to the fig tree and it withered from its root. Joshua was not a prophet but he commanded the sun and moon to stay so he could finish his enemies and they obeyed (Jos 10v12-14).
Why? In the realm of the spirit everything hears, whether animate or inanimate things. You can declare, decree or command that 'no weapon that is fashioned against you shall prosper.....'(Isa 54v17) and so shall it stand, provided you don't doubt what you are saying.
The prophets of old commanded, declared or decreed and it came to pass. But we are operating under a better covenant and better promises than them. All is a question of whether you have accepted Jesus as your personal LORD and Saviour and know the authority you have as a believer in Christ.
So Obed if you have done that then know of a certainty you can command a thing and it shall answer to your command, whether animate or inanimate things, including the cedi.

Arthur k is either confused or disingenuous. No Ghanaian mocks the role of faith in our lives or the centrality of God in human affairs. What they deride is Duncan Williams kind of fraudulent theology that seeks to teach that he could command God to manifest instant physical results such as, make the cedi rise against the dollar. This is a dangerous theology. It supposes that humans no longer need be diligent in the conduct of our affairs. We can misconduct ourselves and waste our resources but avoid the natural and physical consequences by commanding God to intervene in the results through a special dispensation. For us to derive that special dispensation to effect a rise in the cedi against the dollar, God must of necessity grant us favor against the USA. There is no evidence or basis to suppose that God would hurt the US currency in order that Ghana would benefit.
let's consider the example of an alcoholic who squanders his pay on booze before paying his rent. Such a man cannot expect to dodge the natural consequence of his choices, that is, eviction by his landlord. Duncan Williams' command of the cedi to rise is tantamount to commanding God to directly supply money into the pockets of this alcoholic. It's a fraudulent and foolish prayer because the bible does not teach that kind of blatant intervention in the lives of nations by God. Even manna was a special dispensation to the Israelites when they were stranded in the dessert. Since then God has expected them to feed themselves through work. The days of manna, i.e. the days of reaping fruit where one has not sown, are gone. And I am sure Duncan Williams knows this. I am happy that Ghanaian commentators saw through DW's fraudulent theology. Arthur Kennedy should help teach Ghanaians to value work and diligent effort, not expectations of divine dispensation. It is strange that a man who practiced medicine the US for many years would recommend DW's ethics and theology.

However there are many churches, especially the Nigerian churches, which don't bring any foreign currency into this country. They are able to collect from their church members in cedis amounts of enormous proportions. They then buy US dollars or euros and then either transfer it to Nigeria through swift transfers or drive it from Ghana into Nigeria. Any Nigerian church involved in such activities must be shut down by the BOG.

Any Nigerian who wants to purchase foreign currency with cedis must be given Nigerian Naira or CFA Franc.

Good policies, good institutions, hard work, greater amount of honesty in public service etc. What we see in Ghana is the direct opposite and I expect our religious leaders to admonish, rebuke and correct when things are wrongly done. Otherwise it is prayer without works.

Too many pastors in Ghana and they are growing in confidence because most of the people are ignorant. The economy in falling apart because Mahama led NDC have all their focus on how to make the party strong politically and financially and rule Ghana forever. Look how much they spend on the elections, the development partners were even angry about that. We as a nation must wake up and speak the truth about the job being done by our leaders, it does not matter if Mahama is your tribesman or even a brother. He must put Ghana firs ahead of party or tribal interest. He must stop awarding juicy contracts to party supporters like Woyomi, it is the totality of the fruits of such actions that have resulted in the poor performance of the economy and the fall of the cedi.

We cannot even organize community voluntary exercises to clear the filth in our gutters and streets so to get rid of all the breeding places for mosquitoes but hope to rely on Bill Gates to invest in vaccines for Malaria. We think by the mere mention of God somehow we will find divine favour. As a nation we are acting as the proverbial God seeker who is always absorbed in contemplation of the stars in heaven and unaware of the ditch he is about to fall into. Do you know how the American $ became the # 1 global Currency?. It was through plans, hard work, prudent economic and financial policies and reforms,continuity,Common Sense approach to resolve issues in humane way or manner,patriotism devoid of Greed, again,simple Common Sense approach, and simple intuitive strategic advise on which the leadership at the time acted. The last but not the least, prayer among other things from the beginning.
Therefore,it is not because it is written on the Notes "In God We Trust" that is why the American dollars is #1.No,Arthur. We have to use our heads to plan for the Nation for the future,and desist from thinking about our individual "Stomachs" when we are in the position of authority.
