"...Ghana's largest imports include rice, frozen fish, chicken products, vegetable oil, and tomato products." Has anyone in government heard of one Gen Kutu Acheampong who was the head of state of Ghana in the 1970s? It is a shame he was murdered only to be replaced by people who cannot think.

Kofi, thank you and God bless you. This bastard Rowlings, the killer is the cause of all these woes and down fall of Ghana. How can Ghana import tomatoes that grow everywhere in Ghana? Rivers are all over the country, the Volta Lake and river and with this massive Atlantic ocean, Ghana still imports frozen fish for what? How about all the poultry farms scartered all over the country? What a shame? What kind of mentalitity do the leaders have? Very stupid indeed.

Look at Afram plains and the Volta what can of irrigation to we need. Please invest in the people specially the University graduates to engage in large scale farming,Invest in the people by bring farming tractors, plowers pumpimg machines . The sudden drop of the cedi in exchange for the major currencies being EXPERIENCED IN GHANA RIGHT NOW has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with imports.
Ghanaians are dealing with tough economic hardships and have cut down their consumption of foreign goods.
Before you p/ndc brain dead buffoons jump over this, let me clarify that excessive import will cause the general and systemic decline in exchange rate of the cedi. That is no brainer.
WHAT CAUSED THE SHARP DROP OF THE CEDI THIS TIME IS A MATTER OF THE CHICKEN COMING HOME TO ROOST.
The criminal bastards running this gov't have looted Ghana's treasury to the high heavens to almost a billion dollars through Woyome, GYEEDA, SADA, ASOFOTON and all the other fraudulent schemes through bogus judgement debts, bogus and inflated contracts etc
These crooks have piled debts within 5 years bigger than the combined debts of all previous govts.
They have consistly overspent the budget and run deficits through the roof.
There are no economic investments and developments to show for all of the above excessive spending.
When Victorial Hamma was looking for a million dollars in politics, she was doing so to cause the cedi to take a dive

The engine of growth of every economy is the private sector, but in Ghana, the 'crankshaft' in the engine of the private sector was removed by Jerry John Rawlings. When Ghanaian enterpreneurs established factories, they were all confiscated and sold, not to the general public, but to party cronies. Where are the numerous factories that were established by the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah? Gihoc chain of companies - pharmaceuticals, shoe factory, jute factory, black star line, Ghana Fisheries, Nsawan Caneries, etc, etc. Tomato Factory and beef factory in the northern part of Ghana? Now they have all been sold. We import spoon, salt, onion, tooth pick, everything is imported into Ghana. The economy of China has overtaken US, due to exports, exports and nothing else. Secure a credit facility for rice farmers to boost production is just going to be "create, loot and share philisophy.

I MEAN ALL THE JOB-CREATING AND MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES HAVE BEEN DIVESTED INTO OBLIVION.
NO ONE KNOWS WHERE THE MANY DIVESTMENT PROCEEDS ARE TO THIS DAY, AND WHAT THE PROCEEDS WERE USED FOR.
AS FOR THE 10% KICKBACKS, EVERY GHANAIAN KNOWS WHO GOT WHAT.
NOT HAPPY WITH THE DIVESTMENT CRAZE BY GHANA'S SUCCESSIVE LEADERSHIP, THE NPP FOLLOWED SUIT WITH VODAFONE ETC, THEN FOLLOWED BY ATTA-MILLS' AND JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA'S CREATE LOOT AND SHARE POLICIES.
IN ADDITION TO ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE THE END-OF-SERVICE GRATUITY PAYOUTS EVERY DAMN 4 YEARS TO GHANA'S USELESS LAZY CORRUPT "LEADERS", INCLUDING FREE INCOME TAX AND MANY OTHER CONSTITUTIONALLY MANDATED AND MANY OTHER FREEBIES ENJOYED BY THE NUMEROUS ARTICLE NONSENSE OFFICE HOLDERS AND THE WHOPPING 275 LAZY CORRUPT VISIONLESS MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT.
AS FOR HEADS OF PUBLIC BOARDS, MINISTRIES AND CORPORATIONS IN GHANA'S "PUBLIC SERVICE", THE LEAST SAID ABOUT THESE CRIMINALS, THE BETTER.
I MEAN, OVER THE YEARS, GHANA HAS BEEN LOOTED ENDEMICALLY BY CONSTITUTIONAL AND MANY OTHER MEANS BY THE ENTIRE LEADERSHIP, EVEN INCLUDING HEADS OF GHANA'S FOREIGN MISSIONS.
THIS IS WHAT GHANA'S USELESS LEADERS DO NOT TALK ABOUT BECAUSE OF THEIR COMPLICITY.

Today some of the strongest economies are those that were once closed- South Africa during apartheid/India for several decades /China even now /Germany after the world war. We need to support and start somewhere. Why do we import fruits when they are grown here. We can do with oranges, pineapples, bananas etc and do without imported oranges, grapes, apples etc Why do we import the same canned drinks that are manufactured here. Why do we import medicines that are manufactured here. Why do we import textiles when they are made here. Let us place 100% duties on imports of items made here and use local labor and add value here in the industrial sector. Assist farmers to grow the rice, maize, kasava, yam, tomato, vegetables. We used to eat more maize than rice and now it is the other way round. It is time to change the habits and really consume what we grow and manufacture. If you want imported items then you must be prepared to pay very high prices for it. We must stop extravagant and wasteful government spending on luxury vehicles, travel on business and first class with large contingents, stop cronism and family contracts by gov't etc. Only then can we start to save the Cedi and the economy. Ghana has no money left to be wasted or misused or grabbed. Ghana has no time left and must reform its economy back to support agric and industrial value addition and all activities that can be done locally. Ghana must stop punishing those in agric, fishing and industry with punitive taxes and harassment and inefficiencies right from the port. Govt institutions must be educated to be efficient and support local businesses in agric, fishing and industry. Otherwise we will continue down the path of destruction and despair of our economy. Oil and Gold alone cannot save us.
