This week the Speaker of Parliament has given two orders of investigation that are not matters within his authority. The mere fact that he is the Speaker of Parliament does not mean he can make orders on any matter that is raised on the floor of parliament. Whilst I acknowledge that Parliament has authority to order any institution or individual in Ghana to appear before the august house, the Speaker has no investigatory powers over institutions that are under state ministers.
The appropriate method was for the Speaker to ask the minister for Interior who is responsible for policing in Ghana to have ordered the IGP to investigate and report back to Parliament. The same applies to the order by the Speaker to investigate the TDC demolition exercise. The question is, if Parliament goes by the Speaker's methodology, how many investigatory committees can Parliament handle? Parliament has more work to do rather create new investigatory committees outside the usual Parliamentary Committees to investigate public bodies that other institutions are established and paid to do.

You can call me names but I am only sounding a word of caution to Parliament about not using the appropriate institutions or making the irresponsible institutions to work but reinventing the wheel. This is because there is a limit to how many investigation committees that the Speaker can order.
What stopped the Speaker from ordering the relevant ministers to investigate the matters and present a report to parliament?
One of the biggest problem facing Ghana is the fact that institutions do not work or are bypassed and weakened. Instead of the authorities making them work or scrapping them, they create alternatives whilst the existing ones are paid for doing nothing and for their inefficiency.
I saw the demolition exercise on news on my laptop and wondered what was happening in Ghana that such wickedness could befall on citizens. It was inhumane and barbaric to destroy even the contents of their properties, when from what I am hearing the act could be illegal. I am therefore not saying that nothing should be done but the right mechanism must be used otherwise, Parliament will always have to pick up the pieces and that is not the way to run a country. People appointed and paid by the state to perform certain duties as well as institutions given the mandate to do so must be made to work effectively through Parliamentary scrutiny and not Parliament doing the work by itself.

The problem with some of you guys is that you think that whatever you see happening in the UK or US is automatically applicable in the Ghanaian context. You forget that Ghana's Constitution is not necessarily the same as that of the UK or USA.
Can Kofi Atta tell me which part of Ghana's Constitution places the IGP under the Minister of Interior and also which part of Ghana's Constitution says Parliament cannot summon the IGP to answer for his stewardship of the Police Service since it is the minister of Interior who must answer to Parliament on behalf of the IGP?

Why on earth should the Police open fire on innocent people, who were demonstrating for a good road?
The NDC Government thinks any criticism coming from the Ashanti Region is by the NPP.
Government should know by now that Ashanti Region contribute more revenue into Government chest than most Regions in Ghana.
So it is only fair,if citizens feel they deserve a better infrastruture.

The IGP should supoena the the tapes from NhyiraFM`s live coverage of the disturbances that day. This MP said on radio he had passed on assurances he had received from the the Min Of Roads and Hiways to the drivers & troublemakers, and had urged them to call of any protests.
In fact, when the radio stn. called him about the disturbances, and informed him that the drivers had blocked roads and were preventing commuters(including school children from from embarking on their journeys on foot, this same, indicated he was postponing his return to Accra to deal with the situation with the Regional Police Commander.
Remember that these hoodlums had overwhelmed the small police contingent stationed at Kenyase, and it was at the urging of the innocent residents for help that the Buffalo Unit was dispatched to the area to deal with the violent confrontation!
So for this legislator to turn around as though the the police was trigger happy and used excessive force is very disengenious on his part! What else were the backup units supposed to do when they were met with 'missiles' and other offensive weapons?
I believe this MP is behaving in this rather strange way, because he was also accused alongside the DCE for not attending to the needs of the area. Thus I see this an attempt to side with the protestors and thereby carry favour with peeved residents.
Speaker Doe-Ajaho should becareful not to allow himself to be sucked into this mischieve carried out by a bunch of lawless individual!!!

It is about time we learn how to use freedom. The fact that you have freedom of speech and movement that des not mean groups of people can decide to block roads and make situations worse. What do they think of others that use the so called bad roads for daily living? Are there other civilized means of getting messages to those concerned? Can those demonstrating use their time, money or learn to raise money from those who ply the road and maintain the roads? Let's use productive means of solving problems in Africa. Making life worse for innocent citizens can lead to worse outcomes. I don't condone with police brutality but people should follow rules, seek permission to demonstrate and think of others that will be affected by your demonstrations.

Public pressure must be brought to bear on the minister to do his job - that's all that can be done.
