Ask yourselves that when those MATEMEHO gangs finally succeded what did they do to the country? Exact same thing Nkrumah was fighting them on behalf of the nation. THEY WRECK GHANA TO THE LAST BONE.

What at all is wrong with the descendants of these UP/NPP terrorists? Where in the world have they seen that terrorists are given the privilege of legal expression?
They vehemently state that a whole President Nkrumah should have been overthrown by a coup d'etat because he didnt deserve the privilege of political, parliamentary or any kind of democratic discourse.
Now they say common murderous criminals who randomly killed defenseless women and children should have been treated with democratic niceties by the person who in their typical crass opinion, did not deserve same. What kind of logic is this? Isnt there one single intelligent person in the NPP?
Even this their new position of claiming that the courts should have been the place to decide whether those terrorists were guilty or not of their crimes, is a curious opinion coming from people who just recently have taken the courts and judges of Ghana to the cleaners because a judgement was not ruled in their favor. What kind of hypocrisy is this?
Dont they feel ashamed of conducting themselves in the same two-faced manner of their colonial oppressors?
And by the way, what about the hundreds of 'terrorists' who are being ruthlessly and randomly 'eliminated' on mere suspicion each week by drones sent by their colonial masters? I have never ever heard these descendants of local terrorists protest about the obvious human rights violations of these people who are referred to as terrorists? Or is it the case that only Kwame Nkrumah was wrong in treating terrorists the way everybody else treats them?

Theres a difference between opposition and terrorist opposition bent on killing u, for which u survive many times. And if after investigation, I realize JB Danquah is being paid by the CIA, what the fuck do u want me to do? Why was he being paid by the CIA? Ofcourse I cant prove it but common-sense says it. NKRUMAH DID WHAT WAS NECESSARY.
IN THE US, SUSPECTED TERRORISTS ARE DETAINED FOR YEARS WITHOUT TRIAL BECAUSE ONE CANT TAKE THE CHANCE OF LETTING THEM GO, AND THERE'S NO CONCRETE EVIDENCE TO JAIL THEM (BECAUSE OF THE SICK COURT SYSTEM WHICH FAILS TO USE COMMON SENSE BUT RELY ON FOOLISH LAWS). IT BECOMES A NECESSARY EVIL.

Nkrumah himself knew that his own party men and ministers threw the bombs including the Kulungugu bomb. Tawiah Adamafio, Ako Adjei and Coffie Crabbe. He only used the PDA to emasculate his political opponents. I have heard those who cite the recent American example criticize America for that infamous policy when it suits them. Just for being an agent of a foreign country, let alone organizing terrorist acts, Danquah would have been executed, especially in that Cold War era. There are famous instances of this in both the UK and the USA. Nkrumah was actually quite lenient. In all other African countries - even in Cote d'Ivoire - people caught in anti-government activities were executed but the hypocritical Western media never reported these instances. Nkrumah tried to reach to Danquah early on, with his appointment to the National Academy of the Arts. But the traitor, Danquah, wouldn't relent. Nothing but Nkrumah's blood would satisfy Danquah.
People should read "The Origins Of Preventive Detention" by Ekow Nelson and Dr Michael Gyamerah. Very few detainees were innocent. It is a shame for parliament to honour Danquah and never mention the names of the children and civilians killed and maimed. Remember the matyrs of Kulungugu! The young pioneers killed or maimed in Accra! The sports fans who were killed and injured at Accra Sports Stadium. Let this country be honest about terrorism! What would Mahama, Ayarigah and all the MP's do if they were incessant targets exploding grenade bombs and assassination attempts?

You were young, or perhaps not born, so you donot have a faint idea what the opposition, today sitting in parliament in suite and red ties did to make Ghana ungovernable just because Nkrumah was transforming Ghana and there was no way they could beat him in any democratic election. Please read the declassified files of the CIA and you wonder why someone who was prepared to sell Ghana for wage of $1,000 a month be celebrated in parliament. Hawa, where is your conscience.? You are a typical NPP consider that you believe in the concept that anything of other people is bad. Well, let me draw your attention to few happenings in the recent past. Walker Bush, former us president, created the Guantanamo bay where innocent persons are picked from the streets around the world and placed there without trial or charge. Their only crime are that someone did not like the way they talked, walked and appear yet Bush was the toast of the NPP government and their likes.Kufuor dinned and drunk with him while he kept people under the same conditions the PDA did for J B Danquah. The NPP always wants people to think they detest Coup plotter yet Kufuor's first international trip was to visit Eyademah, the brutish coupist Africa has produced. So like the NPP, please be principle and let your yes be yes and your no be no. Not when it is against J.B. Danquah it is bad when it is against other human being then you din and feast with the perpetrators. wise up. Bye

I wish it were possible to go back in time to know exactly what transpired that prompted the passing of the PDA adopted by the parliament. However, it is evident – we all know – that without PEACE a country can’t survive to aspire to it objectives. It is Nkrumah’s quest for peace and quietude in pursuit of his goals for Ghana that might have preponderated in his decision to adopt the PDA.
As I have always maintained, it is rather unfortunate that time obliterates experiences so we tend to forget the past and redefine perspectives when we live in different epoch and live situations other than have occurred in the past. Most of us don’t know what happened. Other than paint Nkrumah with the wrong tools and colors, we need to infer from his achievements and come to a conclusion: His goodwill is overwhelming and manifestly evident.
We can assume therefore that Nkrumah’s à priori adoption of the law must come as a result of his brush with bitter experiences of treachery and also his inability to anticipate on what might be the consequences of other future threats if not confronted, as it happened later in 1966 creating tasteless derailment of the country for life, something we may never got over if he wasn’t overthrown. And this is understandable. I don’t think Nkrumah threw Dr. Danquah in jail for him to die.
Nkrumah didn’t invent the PDA from the scratch. The idea was imported from India by Krobo Edusei who talked it over with Sir Charles Noble Arden-Clarke. Sir Clarke who would have rather have used the military in terrorist campaigns and other violent movements.
Nkrumah surely made mistakes – like every normal being does – like exceeding his budgets each succeeding years, and his overestimation of the intelligence and wisdom of blacks, but his achievements in the short timespan showcased his love for his country, personal capabilities and wit.

You were not even part of anything until 1902 WHEN YOUR ARSE became a protectorate. MBOASEM AKWAKWA!!
In 1902, the British annexed Ashanti and Northern territories. Later, Britain declared Ashanti, Northern territories protectorate and the territory of Togoland (it was mandated to the British after World War One) which were known geographically as "The Gold Coast," a crown colony. In the Gold Coast, nationalist opposition began to form during the 1920s when Great Britain introduced indirect rule to traditional authorities. During the1940s, the movement toward independence gained momentum after police opened fire in Accra (capital of Ghana) on a large contingent of former service men who were peacefully carrying a petition to the Governor to seek redress of their grievances. Joseph Danquah and other leading nationalists founded the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in August 1947 and invited Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, to lead the group's campaign for representative self-government (but Nkrumah and Danquah were jailed after troops fired on demonstrators and a riot erupted in 1948).
In 1949, the Convention People's Party (CPP), led by Nkrumah organized workers and farmers for the first time in a mass movement for independent and staged strikes. A new constitution was introduced by Nkrumah's government to provide direct election by universal suffrage in 1954. But his government was opposed by the National Liberation Movement (NLM), led by Kofi Busia and based on the Asante region. NLM criticized CPP for its limitation on the powers of chiefs. As a result of this, the NLM pushed for the establishment of a federal state with regional governments, while CPP advocated a unitary state. Another constitution was approved on April 29, 1954, establishing a cabinet comprised of African ministers that were drawn from an all-African legislature chosen by direct election. In the election, CPP won the majority of seat in the new legislative assembly (Republic of Ghana, 4).
Prime Minister Nkrumah's Gold Coast government issued a white paper containing proposals for Gold Coast independence in May 1956. The British government agreed to a firm date for independence when a majority of British Togoland residents voted for unification with an independent Gold Coast. On March 6, 1957, the state of Ghana, named after the medieval West African empire, became an independent country within the Commonwealth of Nations.

The true nation wreckers were J.B. Danquah and Kofi Abrefa Busia and the NLM which has morphed to become the NPP of today.Long before even Nkrumah arrived in Gold Coast, false intelligence on him was that he was a communist. Therefore when Nkrumah left as secretary of UGCC and began winning all the elections, the NLM were upset and began to plot assassination attempts on Kwame Nkrumah. They could defeat him in an election, so they will kill him. That is how we came to be where we are today, Dark days in Ghana.See how much money America spent to find Osama to kill him. America killed and him and buried him at sea. Case closed.

Whatever role Nunoo-Mensah claimed to have played for the CIA does not make Danquah's alleged traitorous act right. Besides, both operated in different eras under different circumstances. Subsequent regimes have been cooperating with the CIA to fight global terrorism and rightly so. But the context under which Danquah might have collaborated with the CIA would definitely be traitorous under the prevailing legal system. Now, the significant issue in there is whether he did or he did not commit the crimes alleged. The evidence is in plain view now.
Surely, Danquah deserved a better trial. And for that we can all agree on. But how do you compare the current Gitmo application in the USA now, with the PDA in Ghana in those days?
I personally see both Danquah and Nkrumah erred. The opposition resorted to violence and Danquah was its leader. The CPP majority regime jailed Danquah without fair trial and Nkrumah was the regime's head and accountable for that. HThe bus stopped with both in their respective leadership roles. If the PDA had not been so erroneously approved by the Parliament, due process would have been applied before any long incarceration of Danquah.
Again, there were many violent incidents that the opposition perpetrated including the bombings. Any of those incidents could have led to long sentences of the culprits. Come on, let us be truthful and pragmatic.
I deeply understand the intractable positions that many of us take on this issue. It is very intimate to many of us, and therefore very sentimental. But we need to reach beyond that.
So, we have to just forgive each other and learn our lessons from that era.
The political atmosphere at that time left little room for both sides to behave decently let alone following the Law. We are now only playing Monday night Quarterbacks with the luxury of using today's refined sense of Justice to judge these folks. That is not fair to either side, and needlessly perpetuates animosities among us.
Long Live Ghana!!!

The fact that a person or a party is not in power does not mean that they should be harassed or they should turn themselves into terrorists. The hope of someone not in power now coming into power in the future is real now more than ever. So peace must prevail.

I still really don't know why we as Ghanaians still hail Nkrumah as a 'visionary'. Most of the problems we have as a people started when Nkrumah was in power- his desire for power over Ghana and Africa lead him to just waste our resources on other countries at a time when any true visionary would have build good roads throughout Ghana( not just accra-tema motorway), started building factories so we could process and not sell cheaply to the west etc. Personally, I think Nkrumah let Ghana down and subsequently all our leaders have followed suite- Nkrumah laid the wrong foundation for Ghana.

Mr. Atta Akyea and other NPP stalwart need to use their "God-given" common sense or grow some if theirs have been on the decline. The NPP touts itself as a party seeking democratic ideals of a multi-party, free market and property owning system of governance that exists partly or in whole in the USA or the UK. The powers that be within the NPP better learn to accept what their ideal entail or shut up for once. For it is under the umbrella of those democratic values that UK, US and other western civilized nations practicing democracy that people are held without trial even in this modern era because of terrorism.
You guys in the NPP and other tribal zealots, educated and uneducated alike, should understand that no leaders from any nation under any type of governance will tolerate acts of terror to be visited unto the people because some members in political opposition parties could not accept a loss at the polls or a government in power from a minority tribe. It is truly sad Ghana's UGCC then and or through the Busia-Danquah-Dumbo ideologues to modern day NPP cannot cite any civilized nation where the government was forcibly overthrown by the military or bomb-throwers as reasons to justify their shameful history but would boldly without remorse or shame think the rest of Ghana owes them understanding or sympathy.
I could understand if Ghanaians had benefitted tremendously in development, economically and socially when Dr. K.A Busia became prime minister of Ghana as reason why the NPP and the NPP ideologues would talk and or brag about their ideals. These shameless tribal zealots continue to talk despite the disastrous leadership under Busia and or the stealing, tribalism, epic cronyism and mismanagement that took place under Kufour's 8 years in office. It is people without shame, remorse, full of intellectual dishonesty and above all unprincipled who talk the crap knowing those who live and die by tribal loyalties will listen to the junk they push.
It takes Ghanaians with a little bit of candor and honesty to know that what the NPP engages in is nothing short of intimidation and savagery using their distorted version of history to justify their irrational response to defeat at the ballot box each election cycle in Ghana's election history. Is Mr. Atta Akyea claiming that Ghana should not imprison it’s educated for crimes? He knows good and darn well where the violence and acts of terrorism came from under the UGCC just as the modern day NPP under Kufour at the hands of Nana Akufo-Addo imprisoned Tsikata for causing financial loss to Ghana. How dare you hypocrites talk and draw moral equivalence or sympathize with home grown terrorist even if educated?

Politicians of Akosah's ilk will continue to make the ugly noises but will never be entrusted with the mandate to rule the people because they hate democracy. PROF, we know your allegiance to Nkrumahism and the CPP brand is unflinching, and undeniably your right. However your justification for PDA is one too many. Detention without trial was unjustifiably wrong. We had inherited an enviable judicial set up modelled on the British system which Nkrumah could not manipulate and adulterate as he wished at the time. We do not need rocket scientists to tell us that PDA was passed by the one party CPP government to circumvent the judiciary at the time. In any case both Danquah and Nkrumah have played their parts in shaping modern Ghana one way or the other. We love them all and respect them all. Nothing that lives can be rigidly perfect. What we need from our learned Prof now is positive guidance into the future. God bless us all.

As they say, hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back at the PDA, people can come up with all sorts of romantic criticisms because they did not live in those times nor live in Nkrumah's shoes.
The opposition Nkrumah faced, let by JB Danquah and co., was destructive and would not stop at anything to overthrow Nkrumah, including assassination attempts that also killed scores of innocent people.
Since the courts were in cohoots with Danquah and co. (because they were part of the "intelligentia" that Nkrumah had "usurped" with his "Veranda Boys"), Nkrumah could not rely on the courts to control the situation - hence the PDA.
Other countries, (well known democratic ones, if you will) have used forms of PDA to control terrorists. The United States, when it found itself fighting terrorists that its court system could not effectively handle, deviced their own "PDA", called Guantanamo. Some of the detainees in Guantanamo have been held without trial for more than 10 years. Are the US, George Bush or Obama not democratic? Of course they are, but they are doing or did what they need to do to maintain security.
Margaret Thatcher brought her own form of PDA to contain the IRA. IRA suspects could be held for very long periods without trial. While unfortunate, it did not make Margaret Thatcher any less democratic. She did what she had to do to protect her country.
Nkrumah did what he had to do to protect Ghana. In hindsight, considering the 1966 coup and the fact that the opposition and CIA were behind it, shows that the opposition was not a democratic and peace loving bunch. They were out to get Nkrumah by fair or foul means and the PDA was Nkrumah's attempt to control the situation.

Tensions always rise when we go back to talk about this issue. But we would be better off to learn some lessons from it that can help us deepen our young resurrected Democracy.
People who favor Nkrumah, especially, those whose relatives were maimed or killed by the bomb-throwing by the opposition, would always defend the PDA. And those who support J.B. Danquah, especially his surviving relatives would always see him as an innocent victim of a megalomaniac Dictator.
But the pragmatic truth is that when we resort to violence to resolve our political issues, no one can guarantee fairness in retribution.
Nkrumah's dictatorial tendencies were not in line with Democracy as most of us understand it or the opposition of his day wanted it. But did he deserve to be assassinated? Was the bomb-throwing the only way to rescue our democracy? My answer to that is "no".
After all, Nkrumah's drift to Dictatorship only began within a few years of his overthrow. Had the International Community of solid Democracy been called upon to establish Sanctions against Nkrumah, for example, I believe he would have eventually succumbed without anyone treated as Danquah was.
That last sentence may sound naive to those who would argue the opposing forces could not wait forever. True but why wouldn't they wait? Much had to do with a long history of brutal suppression we had suffered under the so-called champions of World Democracy themselves. Remember segregation and apartheid?
Danquah also did not deserve the incarceration without due process of Law to prove him culpable. If Nkrumah had kept his high security routine and appealed to the general public to denounce the violence while insinuating Danquah's involvement, the public outcry might have reached the Opposition to let them back down from the violence. Then, Danquah would have had the chance to wait for the normal mechanisms like Elections to effect any change in Govt.
All the above is, of course, a product of hindsight being 20/20. Besides, neither Danquah nor Nkrumah had the exclusive luxury to consider the non-violent options I have suggested here. The truth is that more external pressures were involved in their behaviors. The Cold War provided Nkrumah a certain feeling of justification in defying the West and their obvious ally in Ghana's opposition at the time, and the Soviets ' support gave him a false sense of security to remain adamant to Danquah and his Opposition.
Similarly, the West actively encouraged Danquah and the opposition to do whatever was possible to get rid of Nkrumah for all their imperial reasons. No room for compromise in Peace was left. We must all understand that the reasons for Democracy behind which the West condemned Nkrumah's dictatorial drift were only a convenient excuse.
Why do I say that? I say that because the West did not undermine or encourage similar opposing tactics against Houphouet in the Iviry Coast, or Mobutu in Congo Leopoldville, or Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore, all dictators but allies of the West.
In view of the above compact analysis, I strongly suggest that we forgive one another, admit the errors each side made and learn to avoid them for the entrenchment of our Democracy.
Violence must be denounced. Dictatorship must be rejected. When at an impasse, we would have to defer to the larger public and let Elections (or Civil disobedience, in the case of extreme situation of intractable Govt.). World opinion today could be very useful for the necessary impact.
We need to be careful not allow ourselves to be manipulated to crucify our own Citizens by those whose only interest is to get our resources for cheap.
We must remember that even America has its Guantanamo, and Arab Spring did topple Mubarack of Egypt and Gaddafi of Libya.
We don't have to debate the justification for self-defense versus the unacceptability of dictatorship to claim any relative superiority in Human Rights and piety to keep our Democracy. We can only learn from the errors of these Heroes of our Land.

What was the state of Ghana at the time of the overthrow of Nkrumah. Apart from the fact that Nkrumah made himself the president for life, the country's economy was also in a mess because of that stupid idea of forming the united state of Africa. Yes it was a stupid idea because those in north Africa and even some of the sub-Saharan African countries were not prepared to cede power for Nkrumah and his 'USA'. How can a president who wanted to rule for life with different political ideology be glorified and worshiped by those with different ideology. Why, was he the only wisest person in Ghana?
For people like Akosa and those colloquial Nkrumaist who still believe Nkrumah was a 'God' and for that matter knew more than everybody, I ask them to see the fate of USSR. No wonder Nkrumah died with his CPP and I can for see a similar thing happening to NDC unless that murderer called Rawlings openly confess and apologize to the families of those innocent people that he massacred. May the souls of the BIG 6-Nkrumah rest in perfect peace.

This is where I vehemently disagree with the anti-Nkrumah folks like you. Did Nkrumah ever solicit for that kind of Presidency? The fact is his enemies only speculated that his exuberance in championing the African Unity amounted to his pursuance of that position.
There is a proverb that says if your enemy copies or demonstrates your Dancing style, he or she deliberately does it awkwardly". Nkrumah's enemies, both internal and external, never missed any opportunity to portray him as a power grabbing megalomaniac to sour any popularity he had built among the Public at large. So, accusations like this were given traction after his overthrow to justify the ouster.
Many of his peer Heads of State, like Houphouet, either envied him to fall for such fear, or were fed with that lie by the West to engender his dislike among them.
Remember, the West would pay off certain allies in Africa to boycott OAU crucial Summits. Why? Yes, our Economy was in poor shape but did we have to call for Coup any time our Economy turned bad? Besides, the money was not looted as Politicians are doing today. It was used for massive Infrastructural projects that the Colonial masters never thought of giving us and many of which have supported and served us well till now. Please, give the "devil" his due.
The very projects Ghana built in those days that we were brainwashed to believe as being sheer prestigious are the same we are now calling for to avert endless reliance on imports. It is when we keep importing basic needs that the Foreign powers have more opportunities to manipulate our supplies and foreign exchange availability and our crooked politicians control the economy to their parochial interests.
Evidence abound now to refute that assertion of yours, sorry.

We wrote about how a man chased his mother's lover with a machete but laid bed for his wife's lover to have sex with the wife right before his very eyes. In the case of Ghana we shall say that such "witted" man even held the wife for the lover to defile.
The overthrow of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was planned and carried out by the CIA and other western secret services. In 1966 the U.S. Constitution said that the Negro is less an animal than the white man's dog, if a dog happens to belong to a white man, then it has a personality than a being the Negro.
CIA and those western secret services were then defending racial segregation and apartheid at that time. Thus a Negro who runs his country well is supposed to be a bad animal, but one who is a puppet of the west is a good human being. In 1966 the majority of presidents in Africa were life presidents and the overwhelming majority of countries were one party state.
It is on record that the majority of Nkrumah's counter parts all over the world left office in the late 1970s,the case in Malaysia, South Korea and Indonesia. Some even stayed on up to the early 1990s and a case in point is the Ivory Coast president.
Some of the countries around the world are monarchies, in which case only one family can be the head of state. As for the resurrection of the Convention Peoples' Party it is just a matter of time.
