We produced critical thinkers until Jerry Rawlings murdered his way into power. With his revolutionary cadres, they introduced a system that produces graduates "reflecting our economy". The decision makers were butchers and barbers. They cut pre-education from 7 years to 3 years but managed to send their own kids t go through the same educational system they said were not good for the country. Hypocrites! Now our educational system produces a mass of good-for-nothing, semi-literates, unemployable graduates while they continue to send their children to foreign schools.

This shows and proves that anybody who

My fellow Ghanaians, Joe Turkey & co. We have never produced critical thinkers. Yes, JJ contributed to the downfall of our educational system. The old system did not help us either. Shimoto mentioned CHEW & POUR, which technically means IMBIBE & REPRODUCE. Majority of students since time past have been chewing & pouring. One of the few things we chew & pour is kola, tiger nuts, etc.
In thinking critically, we need to ask ourselves why was History removed from our curricula? What I found out was serious! Apparently, our colonial masters were scared of some sort of payback with regards to the issue of the slave trade. When I was at New Hope School, I got to know how my ancestors were shipped and packed like sardines, where they were made to sleep in their feces, vomit, and urine, and how the females as young as 12 were raped by Rev. Father Dawkins who was the captain at the time. The year was 1445! So Joe Turkey & co, if you had committed such atrocities in your home town, would you have the courage to go back there and pretend to be that philanthropic? You will be chased away with sticks! But if you cunningly come through the back door by sending your relative to bring them canned food, wax prints, build schools, etc you can erase your filthy past by asking the chief of the village to pass a decree that your historical events be removed from the text books. After all, you built the schools! How many Ghanaians will discuss such issues with any of you? Please!
I set up a questionnaire for my daughter. Stupid questions and intelligent questions. Joe Turkey & co, my wife saw it as unnecessary! Some of the questions were, apart from petrol, why can't we put in any other liquid in a car? or, how come the people we see on TV cannot be felt or spoken to. My wife's brother paid us a visit whilst this session was ongoing and decided to send his kids over on weekends. Joe, I told him I'm very busy so no deal. He can also do the thinking!
Please notice how the term "Conspiracy Theory" has been slipped into universities all over the world. The idea is to make our university graduates to never think critically for themselves. They are to always rely on the newspapers which is mostly government controlled. What I mean is, if the government has formed a business clique by tampering with energy and in so doing selling generators, how many of us will think critically about this? Joe Turkey, please let's consider this. What will make me spend about usd 50,000 to buy a generator and keep it in my warehouse if I have no information that there will be a power crisis? Please take a trip to all those generator companies and check for yourself! Another one is, if ECG could create some magic by giving us uninterrupted power supply during the xmas holidays, how come they couldn't do same after that? I have put this across to dozens of my fellow Ghanaians. A few have thought through it and have gotten the picture.
So Joe, we have critical thinkers who have never been to school and have made it big here in Ghana. You and I know. No group of critical thinkers will form an association of "Unemployed Graduates!" No group of critical thinkers will organize a Twi speaking movie award event, and another, an English speaking one. Upon all the school they claimed to have attended, this is the outcome. I rest my case.

I have to frankly say that, I was wow to read all the article until I recognised at the end that it is only about institutional education.
Ladies and Gentlemen, one does not need to go to school to become a critical thinker. Of course, the course of our downfall planted by our colonial masters, although in the old days, it was loyalty and royalty that count much, but still our leaders at that time was able to think about our nation or tribes to defend it and it naturals resources. The ordinary people were not nearly allowed to generate this critical thinking skills. The worst think today is that even the leaders who must think outside the box have become lazy thinkers and booty lickers, using their titles for their selfish interest only. All these problems graduate from the colonial inheritance. This is what Dr. Nkrumah and Liman knew that they were strategizing to over come, but rather unfortunately, we had greedy people who make this progress a waste of paper. Rawlings part was the most heavy. Our cultures and traditions are also playing a fundamental part of this problem. Because for example what ever we do and does not make sense and it is from an elderly man, the younger one does not have the right to question it. And this is the course. We need change our mentality to become a working force for our nation. Institutional education could be bought, but nationalism, patriotism and mother love can not bought by anyone. To be able to generate this, we have to sacrifice to create wonderful jobs for the youth and old people. We have to learn to always say the truth, if we are dealing with our country men and women. Our leaders must have their to eyes on and ears for it national in what ever situation they are. Any seeable opportunity must be given to a Ghanaian first and if he mistreat it, he or she must be punished hard for the rest to see.
I suggest, the educationist must come deeper and not running the surface. Deep situation analytic must be done and solution must be found others wise the next generation will fall into the trap and merry go around become future reality.
God Bless Our Home Land Ghana And Make Our Nation Great And Strong!!!

You probably went to a mushroom school where you chewed and poured. I did not. I am not even sure what you are ranting about because you did not find it necessary to be concise. Critical thinking is neither in the old system of the so-called "chew and pour" (depending on what school you went to) nor a baseless system of producing carpenters and bricklayers for our economy. The solution was in developing the branch institutions - technical and vocational institutions - that would take care of "dropouts" from the main stream. The late Professor Kwame (former VC of UST, yes UST) warned the revolutionary PNDC; the result? They labeled him antirevolutionary.

I was in Ghana recently and my daughter is about to write her JHS exam but from my wife who is an Assistant Director and heading a JHS school, our daughter has no choice of independent thinking in exams but to swot. Worse is the universities where if you dont reproduce facts from the lecturer's handout sold to you, you fail his paper. What the heck is going on in Ghana? Commercial elephantiasis of education? IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE THOUGHT TO THINK CRITICALLY TO CHALLENGE THE VIEWS OF THE PROFESSORS AND THE LITERATURE.
STUDENTS ARE THOUGHT TO REVIEW ARTICLES THROUGH CLASS SEMINAR PRESENTATIONS WHERE OTHER STUDENTS RAISE CRITICAL QUESTION ON THE SUBJECT MATTER OR THE ARTICLE PRESENTED BY THE GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL STUDENT(S).
GHANAIAN PROFESSOR HAS BEEN USING THE SAME LECTURE MATERIAL FROM 1960 TO DATE AND WILL NOT CHANGE IT, BECAUSE THE VICE-CHANCELLOR AND THE DEAN ARE FROM THE SAME CROP OF MIND-SET AND HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO OFFER.

Iconic, thanks for your insight into this topic. Let me please share a secret with all of you. All the African professors abroad especially in the US are used as subjects for discussion. It's like project work where the students are made to listen to the African professor of a class. After delivering his lecture, this "dumb" African professor is assessed by a white or American professor along with the students. The African's lecture will be recorded and played back. In so doing, the students then analyze and criticize the part of the lecture they find funny, silly, or simply rubbish! The question they ask later is "And he says he's a professor?" I laugh out loud when they return home bragging.
Something happened to a Ghanaian professor in the US. I will hide his name for certain reasons. He had the nerve to state in his lecture that back home in Ghana, the local folks produce local gin (apketeshie) under unhygienic conditions. He was embarrassed when one young chap raised his hand and asked an embarrassing question that "Prof, the locals who produce this gin are not educated, are they?" Our Ghanaman prof said "Of course not. How can they?" the young lad continued "But prof, If some illiterate guys can produce alcohol under whatever conditions, what have you produced as a professor all your life?" This our fellow Ghanaman had to proceed on leave to cool off. This was in the mid 80s.

Come to think of the fact that the questions we answered some 30 years back in our "Ä" Level exams are still being asked demanding same answers; adding value, mechanized (commercial) farming, increased export, industrialization etc. Yet we are where we were. What I think we need to identify and seriously nature are "doers". There are way too many thinkers who are very much non-performers - espousing theories here and there. Enough of these. Spent with 'Sugar daddys' who are old enough to be a parent. Tell me about a decadent society we are building in this country! When the studious ones are making their parents and the rest of us proud by achieving distinctions at prestigious institutions like LSE,those Anis is referring to are scheming about ways to use their 'natural assets' to get their hands on exam papers,in order to 'sail' through their couse work.
You encounter some of them on foreign campuses, like I have, and you wonder if they ever sat in any lecture hall, let alone imbide anything meaningful from their earlier profs!

Mr. Anis Haffar must be talking about classic definition of education and not education and or the educated as we know in Ghana. Ghana's under-educated and uneducated have been brow beaten into the acceptance of equating classroom earned credentials to wisdom. As such everyone listen to trash and illogical assertions from our educated elite and members of parliament with some college education even as we live unfulfilled daily lives full of disappointment, abuse and misuse of our national treasury.
How much critical thinking went on with our members of parliament during the sale of Ghana Airways and or Ghana Telecom? What amount of critical thinking went into the sale of Discoverer911 drill ship and the payment of US$1million as legal fees to some outfit in London? What about our oil deal that gave 3% lifetime award to the EO group? How about the J.J. era thieves who took over anything state owned and turned them over to the one and only diabolical wife Naa Konadu Agyeman Rawlings? Did anyone in Ghana employ critical thinking when parliament created the school feeding program without sustainable funding sources or NYEP/GYEEDA without legal and funding authority? What about the fact that in Ghana the office of the presidency has been given unilateral authority to negotiate contracts on behalf of Ghana so they said to justify why Kufour could invalidate the CAN sports stadia renovation bid project in order for him to bring in a Chinese company of his liking?
There is no critical thinking needed in Ghana now or ever. We did not employ critical thinking during the 1966 coup and we darn sure have not been using it during the era of military coups. These days our educated and political elite class do not have to say anything with class and or with common sense because they only need support from their ignorant tribesmen and political party foot soldiers most of whom cannot find their way out of brown paper bag if their stinking lives depended on. There will always be short supply of critical thinking in Ghana because tribe and political party affiliation trumps anything good, moral and or principled stand on issue.

There is no question that our education system, from primary through secondary to the tertiary levels need radical reform. Nothing appears to be working. The majority of our young people have a difficult time reading and understand a passage, cannot compute, cannot think critically, nor can they work with others to brainstorm to solve a problem. This has been going on for decades. The way we teach - memorizing, chew-pour&pass method, lecture method do not lend themselves to critical thinking. Kids are not challenged to do research, to investigate to find out why something work the way they do. They don't work on a project to discover why.
Our education system stifles the inquisitiveness of our young ones. I guess we are training them to get a job, which requires little or no thinking.
We produced critical thinkers until Jerry Rawlings murdered his way into power. With his revolutionary cadres, they introduced a system that produces graduates "reflecting our economy". The decision makers were butchers and b ...
