Mmmh. I'm very sad about Komla's death but I daresay reading this has shown me he wasn't very wise in his work dealings. He allowed himself to fall for the corporate brainwashing that killing yourself and putting your health at risk for a corporation is something admirable.
I have always kicked against such brainwashing which is very rampant in high stress-high reward corporate work environments in the western world. The backstabbing and competition is crazy. People will do anything to get ahead and most have no scruples. I used to work for a bulge-bracket investment bank here in Europe and I quit last year because of the toll on my health. Working there cost me two miscarriages, until I wised up and said "to heck with it all!".
It is easy to get webbed-in by the money and the feeling of success but at the end of the day, only you can decide what really matters - money and fame versus your family and the life God has given you. You profit no one anything if you allow yourself to become a workaholic.

The problem with Africans/visible minorities, here in the diaspora, is fear. Fearing of loosing a job that will still be in operation after you are gone.
This should be a lesson to us all in the diaspora seeking to please whosoever at the detriment of our lives.
I see this too many times in my work place here. We act sometimes as cowards and idiots. Hope those in Africa can now realize how hard it is to live in the white man's country.

Akans have a great spirit and pride which nobody on this earth can take away from them. Ghana is mourning the loss of one of her greatest stars and this isn't the time to discuss this, knowing many great people from other tribes have helped shape up Ghana to become what it is today. "Ghanaian", those who say Ewes are not Ghanaians are pathetically ignorant people. They don't know and understand Ghana's history. They demonstrate their deep ignorance because of the kind of poor education they've received. They're actually illiterates.
For those who have been misled by the uninformed and die-hard ethnocentric literates like the Okoampa-Ahoofes and the Akadu-Mensemahs about the Ewes and their roles in Ghana's history, they may wish to read the following brief historical facts for their own mental emancipation:
As far back as the early 1850s, half of Eweland and thus about 50% of the Ewe populations (i.e., of British Togoland and of the Gold Coast), made up of the Ewe sub-groups of the Anlos, the Avenos, the Someans, the Agaves, the Krepis (i.e., the Pekis, the Awudomeans and their environs, et al) were declared by the British as their protectorate. The British thus colonised these Ewe people who formed part and parcel of the Gold Coast Colony. In 1858, the King of Peki, Togbe Kwadzo Dei III, pledged anew his allegiance to the British Crown. Then in 1876, the British formally created the Gold Coast Colony, incorporating this large stretch of Eweland and its people, as well as the Gas, the Krobos, the Akwamus, the Akuapems, the Akyems, the Fantes, the Nzemas, the Kwahus, the Wassas, the Ahantas, etc. These were the original Gold Coasters.
Owing to the fact that the above-named Ewe sub-groups formed part and parcel of the original Gold Coast Colony, they were legitimately represented by their people on the Gold Coast Legislative Council. This was the situation until Gold Coast attained independence of the British in 1957.
Meanwhile, Asante (which then included the present-day Brong Ahafo Region) and the Northern Territories (incorporating the present-day Northern and Upper West Regions) had nothing at all to do with the Gold Coast Colony. They were not involved in Gold Coast affairs whatsoever! They were not Gold Coasters. Indeed, the British did not incorporate the Northern Territories into the Colony until 1899, whereas the Asantes were annexed to the Colony only as late as 1902, following the Yaa Asantewa War that broke in 1896.
The reader must understand that the Gold Coast Ewes referred to above were different from their kith and kin of British Togoland who, together with the Gold Coasters, united (the Ewes unreluctantly) and formed the new nation Ghana at Gold Coast's independence.
It must also be understood that different and diverse ethnic groups constituted British Togoland which stretched from the south of Ho (i.e., from the boundary of the Anlo territory) to the present day Burkina Faso border. This means that in addition to the Ewe people, other ethnic groups like the Dagombas, Akans, Buems, Santrokofis, Avatimeans, Akpafus, Lolobis, Nkunyans, Likpeans, Logbans, et al, as well as those of the present-day Upper East Region, including the Bimobas, Chekosis, Konkombas, Nanumbas, Nawuris, Kusasis, Busangas, Mosis, Dagombas, Gonjas, Frafras. All these people were also British Togolanders. The present-day Volta Region, which was created after Ghana's independence, incorporates almost all the former Gold Coast Ewe territory plus the former British Togoland, minus its northern part, stretching slightly from the north of Kete Krachi to the Burkina Fas border.
From the above brief history of Ghana, it should now be plain to those who ignorantly assert that Ewes are not Ghanaians that Ewes also were indeed Gold Coasters long before the Asantes and our numerous Northern ethnic groups were made Gold Coasters.
In fact, the Ewes also did play major roles in fighting for Gold Coast's independence. This fight continued until Dr. Kwame Nkrumah came on the political scene in the 1940s and some of his close associates who fought with him for Gold Coast's independence were Ewes. Indeed, when the British arrested and imprisoned Nkrumah because of his agitation for Gold Coast's 'Independence NOW!', it was Mr. Komla Agbeli Gbedema (an Ewe man) who led the independence campaign all the way through the 1956 plebiscite during the former's time of imprisonment, which plebiscite's outcome favoured Nkrumah's party, the CPP. Consequently, the British had no choice other than to reluctantly release him from prison, leading to his becoming the first Prime Minister (later President) of Ghana.
Let me reiterate, in conclusion, that the Gold Coast Colony incorporated a large stretch of Eweland, beginning from the Anlo territory, weaving through Sokode Bagble, about almost eight miles from Ho, heading towards the Côte d’Ivoire border via Awudome Anyirawase and Awudome Tsito, Juapong and Accra. Peki and its environs are located north-west of the Awudome towns of Anyirawase and Tsito, all of which were also incorporated into the Gold Coast Colony. In other words, part of Eweland also formed part of the Gold Coast and therefore the Ewes were/are not strangers in Ghana. As such, the Ewes are also legitimate, bona fide Ghanaians.

This is my first post since the break out of the shocking and sad news of Komla's demise.
Now, reading this made me felt the more that I should have looked for him to discuss with him the erroneous way he tried to tackle the avalanche of ethnocentric prejudice and insults directed at Ewes during the 90s with his "Ayigbe Jokes" programme on Myjoy Fm. I was stunned and aghast when I first heard it online. In Norway, a programme like that would have earned him, if not not imprisonment, a hefty fine for him and the Myjoy FM under the country's Anti-Vilification Act. Unfortunately, he brought that Ewe "si kpi kporwo" - don't mind them - mentality to the BBC and got himself thoroughly sickened by it!
It has been proven that those who respond robustly to such attacks fare better health-wise, since they let out steam. You bury it in you it eats you up slowly.
At this very moment, I've been re-editing a block-buster I've been keeping on ice since 2012. I reject the Don't Mind Them mentality a long time ago.
It is so sad he died so young.

It is fair to say that what happened to Komlan, could happen to anyone of us working in an environment charged with hatred. How you respond to work place name-calling, insults and bullying, depends on the environment and culture of the company you happen to be working for. It is not a question of "si kpi kporwo" - I am an Ewe as well. Our brother would have considered all factors around his work. Although big companies have grievance procedures to encourage employees to come forward, the outcome of grievance procedures creates a new environment that makes things worse than they were before, so the employee ends up leaving.
In the UK, racism is subtle, sometime overt but carefully woven and crafted mostly in big firms and white middle-class ghettos (if you happen to be living there). Some of the weaving in these big firms, are around performance management, pay reviews, promotions and even sometimes around what assignments are given. So the offer for Komlan to cover the coming Brazil world cup, could be seen as very import.
The type of name-calling and insults you encounter depends on whether you are seen as a threat or not. In this case, our brother would have been seen as a threat to the white man because he is potent, authoritative, very visible and highly profiled. So for the white man, he is a threat and the plan would have been to grind him down gradually to his demise and I am sure right now, the people who were giving him hard time, would be laughing.

Kwame, I'd have noticed your rejoinder even without your using my names.
Yes, I live in London and I think I know quite a bit about the "smiling racism" here. It doesn't always come in direct name callings or insults but in many subtle ways or carelessly dropped words with a smile. In some instances, it come as an honest inquiry "were blacks actually living on trees?" Or, "are there some people still living on trees in Africa?"
How you respond to even such crude ones count a lot in how they deal with you next time. You don't smile back at them and smugly lecture them about how no one lives on trees in Africa any longer. You tell them that the slave trade has been over for sometime now since Britain abolished it to her nationals so those who had taken refuge in trees had come down long ago! Try that and see how their faces changed to red and they treat you gingerly like a porcupine next time.
You see, when S. Africa was getting Apartheid, my dad was appointed as the first African Administrative Manager of John Holt Bartholomew, with over 20 Brits under him. Papa said one day he went to work and this new young white lady who just arrived from Britain and did not know that my dad was her boss asked him: "Boy, can you fetch some coffee for me?", when he was going to his office. She found herself on board on the next available plane going back to the UK! Papa was still angry when he spoke about that in the late 60s to us.
I have no doubt that Komla, with his ghastly record of "Ayigbe Jokes" from Myjoy FM, didn't handle it properly at all!
My daughter resigned from a big transnational advertising firm without already getting a new job due to the discrimination against her. She was practically being worked to death without the appropriate recognition in the form of promotion even. She was training new recruits who were then being placed on higher salary scales. Apart from her own schedule, she was being burdened with the work of her bosses, and so the last person to go home each day late at night! I agreed with her to resign. After a few months, she got work with even a bigger company, Ogilvy.

Even fellow African workmates complain about we Ghanaians. It is clear Komla demonstrated the typical Ghanaian mentality of some, who always try to prove that they were supermen and best workers to their white bosses, thereby incurring the wrath of fellow workers, esp. Nigerians. Just ask any Nigerian in Europe and they'd tell you that about Ghanaians. Working with a Ghanaian is considered a curse by Nigerians.
I heard about it in the mid-80s before I even came to Europe. A cousin of one of my students from Spain told her why Ghanaians were preferred as workers by the Spaniards. I saw it with my own eyes in Norway and I was so much pissed by it! A Gambian and some others were forced to leave the work.
Well, it has been so for centuries! The best and most desired slaves, the Koromatin slaves, came from our shores!

Any Black man who does well amongst his oppressors is usually about 100 times better than the best white man. This obviously means that such Black people are stressed out, inhumanly exploited and over-used to the point of death on a daily basis and that is what killed Komla.

That is why some of us will never commit our future to working in the white man's country. Fame, yes but one can still be famous in Ghana. Komla was famous in Ghana and I don't think you need to have global fame to be successful in life. You have got to prove too much more than your colleagues once you are black and that brings pressure to bear on you, not to talk about the abuses and disrespect.
What at all do we need in this life? a moderate small salon car, one moderate sized house, enough income to look after your wife and send your kids to school -that's all. Any Ghanaian working in corporate Europe or America can earn a decent income in Ghana to be able to do these. Why worry yourselves my people. Come and let's build our country.

The racist isolation, demeaning, taunting, back-stabbing and direct confrontation alone - at the work-place and in the public domain, is enough to demoralize and kill any self-respecting and honorable Black man.
I would rather confront and try to resolve problems in my own country and among people of my own kind for possible future mutual benefit rather than having to waste my life dealing with the problems of other people who dont want me in their country and who have never really liked Black people, for insignificant benefits and huge emotional and personal losses.

What happened to our brother Komlan at the BBC, is not an isolated case and must serve a lesson for the Diaspora in Europe or America.
It still is perceived as a criminal offense for a black man, no matter how well educated, to endeavour to buy himself out of bondage because slavery is still very much alive. So you have jealousy, racism, collective bullying, from males and females, all coming together. This is a system as opposed to an individual employee, a behaviour that is found commonly in big and autocratic companies, with low ethics, where conspiracy is the norm.
The system is based on creating an environment of fear and intimidation. There would also be a pack of silence around you because a lot of people would be involved in the problem and those who are not directly involved, would be aware but must swear secrecy and silence.
Our brother is likely to have been under constant electronic surveillance, for many years, to try to find anything that can be used to smear him and make him look bad in the eyes of people he interacts with, professionally or socially. His personal e-mails, facebook account, personal mobile phone, any forums he attends, his home phone line, all could have been compromised. I know the problem because I am going through a similar situation and I too live in England and work for a company as big as the BBC.
The bottom line is that, the people involved in this type of behaviour, some very senior managers, some very low ranking as the housekeeping staff, all form a pack of silence which aim it is to make you leave your job or stay and you risk having a heart attack and die.

Nice one Kwame. I am happy when I come across instances that prove that some of our people, such as yourself, have also managed to break loose from the mental chains that we have been dominated with and oppressed with for many centuries.
Seeing that you are able to see beyond the massive facade that conceals the demonic hypocrisy and calculated deception which makes most of us still think that our worse tormentors in human history are rather our best friends, you should write a book on the subject.
Our people need to know the truth about the world and about life. It is the absence of that truth which has kept us as a race of people in bondage, oppression, poverty and backwardness for several centuries.
As is prevalent in this part of the world, and which I suppose is a symptom of all backward and poor societies, we tend to keep useful information and the truth to ourselves. This gives an advantage to our oppressors who are always devising schemes, lies and tricks to outwit us and divide our front.
Truth is a divine substance and it must be shared amongst all people of good intention. Truth, when put together from many sources, improves the quality of life of humanity for all and not for a few.
Congratulations for your rejoinder.

The irony is Komla was well educated enough to know how to effectively deal with the situation he faced.
According tohis profile he studied Sociology and Psychology at Harvard. He should applied some of the theories he studied in these disciplines to better understand this commonplace phenomenon is all organisations/societies where the higher one rises(attains success) the more he/she becomes isolated and envied especially when he was that good at what he did.
He could ave conferred with some close friends and sought their opinion about how to effectively deal with it. Also, he could have just as well have read about it and how to cope with it.
of course we have the benefit of hindsight, however, he should have made use of some form of employee assistance programme or consulted an industrial psychologist for help. He didnt have to bottle it up and suffer so needlessly.
Anyway it's a huge lesson to us the remaining...hope other well-placed young people will take acue and leran from this (possibly preventable) tragedy.
Rest In Peace. Sometime we just have to chalk it to "Who can tell...? Only Providence knows... "
After all, what will be will be, and "ho gagrapha...gagrapha"(what is written is written)!!

JAK, western education of any kind in any western institution is contrived for the benefit and advancement of western society which is founded on the misconception that the white man is a superior being.
Any African who undergoes the process of studying in any western or westernized educational institution and who does not subject him/herself to the mores, principles and substance of that educational system, will not advance to succeed to the level of a graduate. Therefore, by the time anyone completes an educational cycle in any such institution, he/she is already a goon and a zombie of that system.
Our people therefore willingly offer themselves under the illusion of seeking superior education, to be brainwashed by this kind of destructive education for the African. Perhaps this can explain why our Ghanaian intellectuals and academics seem so ineffective, irrational to our peculiar circumstances, distant and why they do not live up to our expectation. They have been intellectually compromised and rendered ineffectual.
In Komla Dumor's case, he was an intelligent African who had managed to relieve himself of the mental shackles and intellectual paraphernalia of western imperialist tyranny and subjectivity.
Like a freed slave, there is nothing more threatening to the average white man than an intelligent independent-minded African. Apart from the ingrained fear of historical retribution, this fact alone debunks the institutionalized white myth of the superiority of the white race.
Perhaps the offer of an anchor presenter for the Brazil Games by his presumably white boss, was the kiss of death for Komla.
May he rest in perfect peace.
The struggle continues.

If you are prepared to work in a white man's country, get ready for racism, pressure, hate, and all that Komla mentioned in his text message. You have no breathing space when it comes to working with a white man. They want perfection, excellence, text book results. To make matters worse, it you are from the so called third world country, they expect you to do ten times better than a white man or woman . Even if that white fellow is a grade 10 dropout, he\she would be chosen over you. I am not surprise that Komla indicated that he was or went through those tough times. Well, he love what he did,and he proved himself, that he could do. Unfortunately, that has caused him his life. Let us all learn from such. Life is not all about work. while you make someone happy and rich, you exchange it with your own precious life, which is not worth it. Komla, we love you and you will always be in our thoughts. Rest in perfect peace. Nobody, or no one would make you feel sad or rejected anymore. It is over.

Sadly, from this, it is obvious that Komla Dumor has been another victim of Essential hypertension - the silent killer. This condition is extremely common among Africans. So while we mourn the very sad loss of such a young and vibrant Ghanaian who had so much ahead of him, we should learn from this and arrange to have our blood pressures checked regularly because it can be dangerously high without any symptoms. That we take preventative health serously should be part of Komla Dumor's legacy. May he rest in peace.

I agree 100% with Kwamina Andrews. While we mourn the irreplaceable loss of Komla Dumor, let us all learn from this and take preventive care very seriously. Let us make time to take care of our health because we need to be in a good state of health to be able to do what we love. Brothers especially, please take heed and make time for regular check ups. Its about time we stopped attributing all sicknesses / death to the devil and took care of the body God has lent us.

Sincere condolences to the family of the renowned Dumor. It is a pity that the gifted Dumor had to end up working for an organization like the BBC which nowadays promotes values which THE VAST MAJORITY OF AFRICANS FIND TRULY OFFENSIVE AND CANNOT IDENTIFY WITH. I have long stopped listening to the BBC which is there these days to shape public opinion rather than inform the public. We hope that the next generation of talented African journalist and reporters will work for organizations which are atuned to the values held and cherished by the vast majority of Africans and in fact the majority of the world's population - rather than for organizations like the BBC evangelize and promote the unnatural ideas held by a small but immensely influential group of left wing liberals holed up in the back rooms of the BBC as well as in Number 10 and the White house. Powerful they may be in the West but globally they are still a minority and our journalists must remember this and never sell their souls in exchange for the approval and material rewards offered by these strident campaigners of alien values.
