• Mr Justice William Atuguba, the president of the nine-member panel of judges that heard the election petition.
With an election petition that sucked the energy of the nation; an economy that wobbled on huge budget deficit; a power crisis that dimmed the light of the nation for a long period of time; an inexplicable wave of fire outbreaks, especially at marketplaces, and a spellbound turbulence on the industrial front, the year 2013 has been extremely eventful and challenging for the government.
The year was also full of controversies and scandals, with the mystery surrounding the sale of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) drill ship and the sale of the state-owned Merchant Bank to Fortiz Equities Investment topping the list of controversies, while former deputy minister, Ms Victoria Hammah, and ex-Ghana international footballer, Nii Odartey-Lamptey, and his wife topped the list of scandals.
But the qualification of the senior national team, the Black Stars, for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, making it their third consecutive qualification, provided a perfect and necessary balm to relieve the nation of a rather stressful year.
Election petition
Ghanaians had been ushered into 2013 with a gruelling national election that nearly brought the nation to its knees, but the outcome of the election prompted a historic election petition in the country when three members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by its 2012 flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, challenged the Electoral Commission’s declaration of John Dramani Mahama as the president-elect.
For the first time in the history of Ghana, television cameras were allowed into the courtroom to beam proceedings at the Supreme Court live, and for the next eight months, the entire nation was held spellbound, as Ghanaians stuck to their television and radio sets to follow proceedings.
There were many interesting developments in the course of the proceedings, but the incarceration of Ken Kuranchie and Samuel Atubiga, and the fine imposed on NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie, aka Sir John, and Hopeson Adorye for contempt charges still linger in the minds of many Ghanaians.
The seriousness and tension that characterised the proceedings notwithstanding, there were moments of humour and laughter, and the most memorable of them all, perhaps, was when Lawyer Amekudzi, sprang from nowhere with an “amicus curiae brief.”
The President of the panel, Justice William Atuguba, also kept the audience alive with laughter from the beginning to the end of proceedings.
His “go to court, go to court” comment, while addressing a tired-looking EC Chairman, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, on the judgement day, caused many people to crack their ribs with laughter.

Economy
The national economy has faced some major challenges during the year in spite of the positive gains made over the past few years in respect of some fiscal benchmarks.
With a huge budget deficit hanging around the neck of the government, it has struggled to raise the required revenue to finance various development projects.
A renowned Ghanaian economist and Fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Prof George Ayittey, was blunt in his appraisal of the state of the nation’s economy at an IEA forum last November.
“The government is hungry for revenue, and it is slapping taxes on anything that moves. Import duties, VAT, among other taxes, have all gone up, and we have reached a point where we must tell the government, ‘enough of these vampire taxes!’
“Ghanaians are overtaxed. If government wants people to tighten their belts, the government must tighten its own belt and cut the excessive spending habit,” he said.
Such criticisms might have informed the directive by President Mahama to cut down his salary and that of his lieutenants by 10 per cent and use the proceeds to undertake maternal health projects.
Power crisis
Ghana has experienced many power crises in the past, and although the power crisis in 2013 was not different from the others, it became a reference of national mockery.
First, it was about the tagging of the intermittent power outages as “dum so, dum so”, to wit, “off and on, off and on”.
Then, Ghanaians, in their humorous best, graduated that tagging into a greeting – “me ma wo dum so ooo”, meaning “I bring you off and on.”
Industrial actions
The spine of the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP) was severely fractured by a wave of industrial action with the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOPSA) leading the onslaught.
Other workers’ unions such as the Civil and Local Government Service Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) also joined the fray to put further stress on the SSPP and pressure on the government to address their concerns.

Fire outbreaks
The year under review witnessed unprecedented and inexplicable fire outbreaks in parts of the country, particularly market places, in a manner that compelled the government to raise suspicion of arson and sabotage.
markets in Accra and the Central Market in Kumasi were all razed by fire, throwing thousands of traders into a state of helplessness.
The damage caused by the market fires in terms of loss of property and cash was colossal.
Based on the government’s suspicion, and in its resolve to contain the situation, the Mahama administration invited fire experts from the USA to partner with Ghanaian security agencies for an investigation into the causes of the fires.
The outcome of the investigations attributed the fire outbreaks to electrical faults.

Scandals
There is no year without scandals. And 2013 had its fair share of scandals with the leaked tape recording of a former deputy minister of Communication, Ms Victoria Hammah, staggering the nation.
On the tape, she alleged that the government bribed some of the Supreme Court judges who sat on the election petition case to deliver judgement in favour of President Mahama.
She also declared her ambition of making $1 million in her political life; comments that went viral on social media and attracted widespread public criticism, even long after the President had sacked her from office.
Another scandal that rocked the nation was the revelation by ex-Black Stars midfielder, Nii Odartey-Lamptey, after 20 years of marriage that he was not the father of ‘his three children.’
According to the footballer, he got to know about it after getting a DNA test done to ascertain the paternity of the children upon a long-held suspicion of infidelity against his wife.

World cup qualification
It took the exploits of Nii Odartey’s successors in the national team to rescue the nation from tension and animosity, as they qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup tournament for the third consecutive time.
They achieved that feat in grand style by dismantling the Pharaoh’s of Egypt in a 7 – 2 goal aggregate, the worst result in the history of the Pharaohs.

International front
On the international front, the major event that happened in 2013 was the death of former South African President, Nelson Mandela.
He died at the age of 95 after a long battle with lung infection.
Indeed, the year 2013 will go down as one of the toughest years in the history of Ghana, but it will also be remembered as one of the most hilarious.

If I were a President these simple steps I intend to take will instantly transform the nation in a short time.
1. I shall make it a law for all houses and buildings to either use concrete, or well manicured lawn
to adjoin the street, irrespective of township or area. I shall then order all homes to be painted each other year.
Lets see waht this would do for the nation. It will do away with the dusty environment leaving a clean nation, reduce head colds and pharmaceutical costs, create jobs for construction workers, give additional work for maintenance workers and gardeners, give cement sale and manufacture a boost all around the nation, sale of gardening equipment would be on the rise.
How would I enforce the law ? I shall train from a pool of proven honest health inspectors shaped along the colonial era "town council police" with a no-nonsense approach towards enforcement of the law. I shall set up a special court with powers to mercilessly fine and jail infractors.
You see, we are making strides with this simple law.
2. I shall electronically automate the toll system to account for each penny collected. Simply slot in your money, get a receipt and gain access to drive away - all electronically processed, no fake receipts.
3. I shall assign numbers to all persons to be used for tax and personal identification. This will help track down tax cheaters, violent criminals and increase revenues.
4. I shall install Wireless Cameras at all public places, buildings, checkpoints and highways. This will help track down criminals, reduce police corruption and ensure public safety.
5. I shall warn and thereafter strictly jail (minimum of five years per offence) any public official involved in any act of corruption without wasting money and time on useless investigations, and reward tipsters for whistle blowing.
6. I shall summon the following people to quickly return any money stolen from the nation or face long term jail and confiscation of properties Past and Present Ministers, heads of state, assemblymen, contractors, party officials from all political parties past or present who had any shady deals with money, Jubilee Oil players, Gyeeda, Drill Ship, Kufuor Ambassadors to India's Rice deal, Stax, Merchant Bank clumpsy dealings, Woyome, Betty, KT Hammond, Hanna Bissiw, Tsikata, Kufuor, Mahama, Rawlings, Ablakwa, That greedy lawyer Lithur, Mahama's Brother inter alia.

Your NDC has reigned for FIVE SOLID YEARS now,but with nothing to prove, they belong.
Mahama, was the second-in-command to ATTA MILLS,therefore he should have by now, known what to do,with lots of tools in hands,to work with.
BUT WHAT DO WE SEE:
He has borrowed more than all other governments put together.
He can't pay his own administration/government agencies.
Doctors go on stokes at will.
Our security is in shamble,as armed robbers work any time they like. The police is corrupt, therefore everyone can do whatever he likes and pays bribe,to go scot free.
No job opportunities, therefore, graduated from schools, have no future to hold on to.
Our natural resources are taken by foreigners for pennies.Yet,your government has no plans afoot to precess them.
Ghana experiences housing problems, and XTS effort, that we thought would have been the savior, proved futile.
The filth kills, and no viable strategic plan, solution to combat its menace.
The economy doesn't do all that well, since borrowing has been the order of the day.
Investments from abroad are not coming because of protectionism, the WEST embark on.
Hey,the problems are too many to count.

I could not have agreed with you more. In this era when politics has become a reliable short-cut to becoming wealthy by foul means, we definitely need the virtue of selflessness in our leaders and politicians. The most worrying aspect is the breeding of sycophants, who will support anything and defend the indefensible in the hope of getting noticed and rewarded with a political appointment. We cannot build a country if the youth dream of making it through politics. That is why young inexperienced youths take to being loud on the airwaves and the media. All they need to do is to always insult opposition figures and sing the praise of the President just so they can be given some appointment. The examples are there to see: Felix Fosu Kwakye, Ras Mubarak, Mutala to mention but a few.

LET US CALL A SPADE A SPADE. THAT TYPE OF LEADERSHIP CAN ONLY BE FOUND IN NANA ADDO. FOR THE SAKE OF TRIBAL INSTINCTS AND EGOISM, WE ARE JUST NOT GIVING HIM THE CHANCE TO CHANGE THE FACE OF THIS NATION.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SAYING THAT IF ALL GHANAIAN CITIZENS COULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO AND SEE HOW EUROPE, USA, DUBAI OR THE FAR EAST DEVELOPED, WE WOULD STOP THIS SORT OF FOOLISH TRIBAL VOTING PATTERN IN GHANA AND VOTE ON PRINCIPLES IN ORDER TO DEVELOP THIS COUNTRY FOR CHILDREN YET UNBORN.

UAE has giant state-of-art desalination plants and water filtration/treatment plants.
The water that Mahama and family used in the UAE was sea water pumped from the Arabian Gulf, desalinated and treated using giant solar powered desalination plants purchased and installed by Dubai leaders without a penny of foreign loan.
Black leaders are a pain in the arse hole.
No wonder Mahama and his entourage were welcome in Dubai outdoors on wooden benches without cushions.
AND THEY DIDN'T SEEM TO SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT SHOW OF DISRESPECT.

We must start to rebuild our own to make us shine and enjoy our holidays at home. Enough of this crap ! Come on , lets build Ghana . It takes forever to build a common office building along tthe Arport Road - Spintex Road has been a mess for years - a simple construction of overpass across the Motorway from Spintex to East Legon will ease the burden of traffic snarl. What is wrong ? Do These so-called leaders have any brains at all or what is wrong ? How much effort does it take for caterpillars to level the dingy roads and plow some tarred substances on the surfaces ? Obviously the foolish leaders are content with the dust - they must all face the firing squad for abrogating national responsibilities but being paid huge sums of salaries for nothing. THIEVES
Electricity supply is a mess, Water is still being rationed, roads linking major cities look like nineteen century footpaths. How would a leader take pride in a boastful position or even merely call himself a President. Rawlings, Kufuor, Mills and Mahama - all must face the firing squad together with their stealing comrades for leaving the country in this state of disgrace.
I have never been disappointed that much in life ! Yet some idiots are content with this and compare folly to folly instead of getting off to face realities to force these greedy politicians who obviously know nothing about progress to fix the mess.

You will be isolated from the rest of Ghana but can maintain your Ashanti kingdom as an autonomous state with your Otumfuo as the head of state. just like Swaziland and Lesotho in South Africa. You can generate and fight any disputes you have among yourselves (tribal, ethnic and clan).
We need peace.

We all know this. We all keep on hammering our hopeless situation and blaming all the politicians. What is the solution if the politicians are no good? As said, TALK IS CHEAP. Do we need another dictator? As a motivational speaker you should know that development is always progressive. I believe you did not live up to your title as a Motivational Speaker. You only succeeded in painting a hopeless situation out of our gloom. Have you read Obama’s book – “The Audacity of Hope” or Martin Luther’s “I have a dream?” I think you should adapt their style and character. They earned their title as Inspirational Speakers. Thanks.

The NDC has turned Ghana into a useless country. Rawlings and his gang of criminals have taken Ghanaians hostage for a long time and it's time to break ourselves free from that bondage else we'll continue to go in circles achieving nothing!
They came promising Ghanaians of happiness after going through temporal pain, akin to a woman in labour---"when the baby is born the pain is over and joy follows"---was Rawlings' promise. It's been 24yrs now and the pain still persists---even more severe than before. Rawlings and his gang killed everyone the thought deserve to die; those deaths of sacrifice have been in vain. Yet he continue to tell us that his June 4 and December 31 uprising were justifiable....Tweeaaa!
Ghanaians need men of courage to stand up and point it out that we don't need any group of soldiers to tell Ghana how we should govern ourselves. Now some NDC leaders are asking Ghanaians to leave the country if they cannot cope with the hardship. I'm not surprised to hear that statement from NDC. They believe that they can do whatever they want---killing judges and officers when their ruling don't go in their favour. Tsatsu Tsikata was part of the panel of judges when Rawlings was on trial in his May 15 coup attempt and I wonder why he wasn't added to those murdered? Soon Rawling and his gang wound go on a haunt targeting certain tribes people branding them as enemies of the revolution. He wondered why these people most of whom were business owners could afford to school their kids abroad etc., only to turn around and send all his kids of the UK to study? What a hypocrite! I guess he was referring to Kuffour and Akufo-Addo whose parents fought hard to them some education in the UK.
Kuffour did all he could to make sure Ghana's dreams of becoming an Oil-producing country was possible by bringing in brains that could make things happen. Kuffour organized a national debate about our Oil management and that debate and policy implementation was hail by many as the wises thing in Africa. Soon as the NDC took over power, they hauled Mr Owusu and Adusei who had contracted Cosmos Energy and Tullow Corp to make our Oil find a success before the courts. Then Rawlings begins to call people names during the 2007 campaign. He said Kuffour and his ministers were thieves and will be jailed when NDC comes back to power. Now every Ghanaian can make their own judgement. The kind of corruption and thievery going on in the country is unprecedented in our history as a nation. The SADA, GYEEDA, Woyome Payment Scandal, ISOFOTON, and now Merchant Bank are but a few of the thievery that's going on NDC's time. Interestingly Rawlings feels comfortable and believes things are right. Lord have mercy on your country and rescue your children from the clutches of evil men. The "Sasabonsam" party is up to loot and destroy the country yet they're the ones trying to deceive Ghanaians by shouting about corruption.
When people like Charles Sam tries to lay things straight the NDC get peeved; they don't want anyone to talk about their dirty schemes. I hope and pray that Ghanaians have opened their eyes widely enough not to allow themselves to be fooled by the NDC anymore. Opposition parties in the country should embark on education crusade to alert our brothers and sisters in small towns and villages so we won't have the same election problems as it's been in the past. It's time to vote out the incompetent John Mahama-led NDC party out of power.

I cannot agree more with you Mr Sam. Selfless leadership is what is lacking in Ghana and most places in Africa and that is why we are in this mess. Aside from that tribalism, nepotism and cronyism are also the other factors.
When we talk of selfless leaders those who come to my mind are the following leaders listed not in any particular order:
1. KWAME NKRUMAH - GHANA
2. LEE KWAN YU - SINGAPORE
3. DR. MUHAMMAD MAHATHIR - MALAYSIA
4. SHIEKH MOHAMMED - DUBAI
5. JOHN KENNEDY - USA
6. NELSON MANDELA - SOUTH AFRICA
7. ABRAHAM LINCOLN - USA
8. LULA DA SILVA - BRAZIL
9. DENG XIAOPING - CHINA
If you study any these leaders you would notice that they all put their national well-being ahead of their selfish interests. Leadership is about serving one's nation to the utmost best without regard for other parochial interests. Unfortunately apart from Kwame Nkrumah none of Ghana's leaders have been able to come any close to doing that.

You said it right Charlie. About 80% of the occupants of the leadership positions in Ghana are there to amass wealth at the expense of the country. They are very poor to begin with but at the end of their tenure in office, they become very rich.Take a look at the United states of America.Do you think George Bush,Jimmy Charter,Reagan and even Obama occupied the white house to enrich themselves, perfectly not!!.Just a few months ago a minister was heard reiterating her plans to accumulate at least $1,000,000 before she left politics. This has been a trend since post independence-Politicians depositing huge sums of Ghana money in foreign banks for their families. My Fellow citizens, until this "SELFISHNESS" is reversed, Ghana will be at a standstill economically despite the rich resources. Land for Land, Ghana is richer than the USA.
