People like you make me sick to the stomach, just like your moniker, Mobutu. Why attack Naana for asking a most pertinent qs? For all we know, Naana is resident in Canada; hasn't been to Ghana for the past 10 years and if at all, just stayed with family in Accra and returned. How then could she know about what's happening in the north of Ghana and report it to govt?
Now, it is the responsibility of those in charge of the local govt to ensure good health and other devts in their areas. What they can't handle, they must inform the regional govt for help. But it is the responsibility of families to take care of their kids. In this case, both the families and the local authority have miserably failed the children. They have behaved in the most uncivilised manner imaginable.
Now, it was long overdue to realise that Ghanaians are not civilised, northern Ghana remains one of the most backward in Ghana. That's why the CPP regime started free education in that area from 1953. 60s years later, it is a shame that the products of that free education are just as dim-witted, selfish, backward and not civilised than those in southern Ghana, who struggled to acquire their education and think they don't owe the state any patriotic duties and allegiance. My own VR is a case study of how the type of education we have been pursuing has totally failed to transform our communities into developed ones.
The Ministry of Health in particular should promptly respond to this video and have the children treated free of charge at once! I am tire of having these uncivilised idiots and morons misruling us. This is not what the grandparents and parents of some of us sacrificed so much to help the British to begin doing and Nkrumah to intensify doing respectively.

Andy i agree with you but for the charge on the family. i believe you saw the "near hapless" condition the mother and these children are living in. again in a society as the north in particular where superstition is rife i will not be surprised if this family has been tagged. And I can equally bet my last penny that the poor mother has no idea what the condition of her children is let alone know that it is curable.
my point of strong agreement with you is why the local health authorities have not picked up these a long time ago. let us remember that our health system ensures "client focused" care as operated through the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) concept.
The starting point should therefore be the District Director of Health Services for failing to bring this to the notice of appropriate or relevant authorities.
Just as we are quick to report on leprosy, tuberculosis, guinea-worm etc because there are donor funding, I find it extremely appalling that our health field officers failed to record this condition if indeed they keep community profiles and registers as required of them.

Pontius,
After 60 years of free education in the North, there is no reason why I'd accept any excuse for the young family, and that includes the extended family members. None went to school? To me, that is utter primitivism without any semblance of exposure to modern institutions of civilisation.
I come from the VR which also suffered terrible deprivations during the pre-colonial era of slave raiding and trading. Poverty reined supreme but thanks to the German missionaries, who also controlled parts of the present Northern Region and much of U/E, the conditions were ameliorated. But as you know, many from the VR were forced to become migrant labourers and fisherfolk in Ghana and beyond. But most ensure that their children go to school and pay the fees. Some even struggled to pay their own fees by working, dropping out of school to earn money, and then return to school. It is therefore NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE to have Northerners producing illiterates and people so utterly backward!
Don't get me wrong. It is not acceptable to have trokosi in the Tongu area either, even though the last one making waves was still going to school.
And the state of uncivilisation of our so-called Ghana elite is also not acceptable.

Andy you are right but my point was that as you are also aware, it is even the highly educated who sometimes lead in the practice of our outmoded customs and practices. Given this fact I strongly believe that the woman may have been stigmatized along with her children given her own level of education and social orientation.
It is a sad situation and as I've indicated somewhere, the blame should be placed at the door step of the District Director of Health Services because it is his/her duty to provide the necessary information and support to the community. If that had been done, the signal would have been picked up whether educated or not

Point blank, our current administrative and governance structure is unresponsive and unaccountable to our needs. The constitution was designed for/by/to a dictator - JJ Rawlings - and 21 years later it has proven to be largely useless. In a real democracy, the governance structure will start from the district assemblies or local councils, all of whom will directly be elected by the people and held accountable by the people. What do we find in Ghana, the president selects and imposes 30% of the assembly members, plus the district executive officer, who is supposed to be confirmed by the assembly. From the get go, you can rest assured that the nominee for DCE has a shoo in of 30% of the votes going in. The laughable thing is, even when some nominee has been rejected by the assembly, the president continues to present the same nominee over and over again, some times as many as four times to bend the will and resolve of the assembly.
The question you have to ask yourself is, who does the selected and imposed DCE feels responsible to, the president or the people? Throw in crony capitalism and you can assume rightly that all that the DCE needs to do is to percolate up corruption money to the electioneering campaign of the president, and he can be a DCE forever. This is why we have the health problems under discussion. Nobody is looking out for the interests of the people.
For years we have been talking about bridging the development gap between the north and the south, so one would be right to assume that with Mahama, development agenda for the north would have assumed some vigour and push. Wrong assumption. John Mahama is too bad for his people. He is the worst thing to happen to them. He is the typical crony vulture capitalist who will give huge chunks of money to his cronies to venture into akonfem farming and can only boast of 600 guinea fowls after spending 15 million cedis. Add another 30 million cedis for some shadowy tree planting initiative, and you have a typical example of crony capitalism. All the 45 million cedis, under the guise of SADA, went to his buddy Roland Agambila, leaving the people behind in the dust, when they could have benefited from something modelled on the Millennium Challenge Account that lifted thousands of our folks from poverty. I dare say our people vote against their own best interests because they are misled to vote along tribal lines, not on the issues and character of the candidates who come to ask for their votes. Cry the beloved country. Corrupt and incompetent people are in charge, and the country suffers.

MAHAMA is the most wicked and heartless "leader" I have see in recent times. His only preoccupation to be the richest person in Ghana not through his own hardwork or business but through corruption, fraud and fraudulent deals.
Ver sad for these kids and families going through these preventable disease in the face of a president who just doesn't care.

IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE TREATABLE. BELOW IS THE WIKIPEDIA DEFINITION OF THIS DESEASE.
Affected babies are born in a collodion membrane, a shiny waxy outer layer to the skin. This is shed 10–14 days after birth, revealing the main symptom of the disease, extensive scaling of the skin caused by hyperkeratosis. With increasing age, the scaling tends to be concentrated around joints in areas such as the groin, the armpits, the inside of the elbow and the neck. The scales often tile the skin and may resemble fish scales.
Collodion baby
In medicine, the term collodion baby applies to newborns who appear to have an extra layer of skin (known as a collodion membrane) that has a collodion-like quality. It is a descriptive term, not a specific diagnosis or disorder (as such, it is a syndrome).[1]
Appearance and treatment at birth
The appearance is often described as a shiny film looking like a layer of vaseline. The eyelids and mouth may have the appearance of being forced open due to the tightness of the skin. There can be associated eversion of the eyelids (ectropion).
Collodion baby can have severe medical consequences, mainly because the baby can lose heat and fluid through the abnormal skin. This can lead to hypothermia and dehydration.[2] Strategies to prevent these problems are the use of emollients or nursing the baby in a humidified incubator.[3] There is also an increased risk of skin infection and mechanical compression, leading to problems like limb ischemia.[1][2][3] There is also a risk of intoxication by cutaneous absorption of topical products, for example salicylate intoxication (similar to aspirin overdose) due to keratolytics.[4]
The condition is not thought to be painful or in itself distressing to the child. Nursing usually takes place in a neonatal intensive care unit, and good intensive care seems to have improved the prognosis markedly.[1] The collodion membrane should peel off or "shed" 2 to 4 weeks after birth, revealing the underlying skin disorder.
The condition can resemble but is different from harlequin type ichthyosis.
Long term course
The appearance can be caused by several skin diseases, and it is most often not associated with other birth defects.[2] In most cases, the baby develops an ichthyosis or ichthyosis-like condition or other rare skin disorder.
Most cases (approximately 75%) of collodion baby will go on to develop a type of autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (either lamellar ichthyosis or congenital ichthyosiform erythrodema).[5]
In around 10% of cases the baby sheds this layer of skin and has normal skin for the rest of its life.[2][5] This is known as self-healing collodion baby.
The remaining 15% of cases are caused by a variety of diseases involving keratinization disorders.[5] Known causes of collodion baby include ichthyosis vulgaris and trichothiodystrophy.[3] Less well documented causes include Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, Netherton syndrome, Gaucher disease type 2, congenital hypothyroidism, Conradi syndrome, Dorfman-Chanarin syndrome, ketoadipiaciduria, koraxitrachitic syndrome, ichthyosis variegata and palmoplantar keratoderma with anogenital leukokeratosis.[3] Since many of these conditions have an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, they are rare and can be associated with consanguinity.[3]
Tests that can be used to find the cause of collodion baby include examination of the hairs, blood tests and a skin biopsy.

Ghanaians really deserve the type of leaders we have!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the Ministry of Health and the Public Health dept/directorate under the MOH aware of this disease? Do we have trained Clinical Dermatologist in that part of the country? What is the causative organism of this disease and what are the treatment protocols for this disease? We have been made to understand that, this disease is non contagious or as is typical of our culture, the "alligator kids" phenomenon has been conveniently characterized under the numerous cases of superstitious ailments from the devil, denying these kids the needed clinical interventions.
Ghanaians would be correct in saying that, a lot of such medical conditions exist in every corner and cranny, in every village and hamlet across the length and breadth of the country, but institutional failures, superstition and the lack of the political will has all conspired to deny a greater majority of these less privileged Ghanaians the chance of good health, a very critical and important ingredient of a prosperous nation. Time and again, issues such as these, brings to the fore, the level of hopelessness and despair that continues to grip the silent ignored majority of the population, on the altar of petty partisan politics, reckless corruption, lack of effective and visionary leadership by the political elite and institutional failures, which have become notable factors, militating against our socio-economic development as a nation. When we have a situation where our major hospitals lack incubators, respirators, beds, are operating or functioning using obsolete equipment, lack water and electricity, wheel chairs, etc, etc but the political oligarchs would conveniently use taxpayers money and public funds on frivolous personal aggrandizement via theft and looting of the public purse, at the expense of fixing these institutional lapses, governance looses it's meaning to the citizenry, impunity reigns supreme, and anarchy, most definitely, becomes an avenue or outlet of public frustration. Indeed, Ghana needs a new sense of direction and purpose to make real meaning of governance.

There have been cases in Indonesia and China for example where the tree man and such were identified and subsequently treated. This is one of many viral diseases requiring assessment and tests. Apparently, some causes are attributed to lack of Vitamin A deficiency and treatment of human papilloma virus in others. I believe treatment may be available locally but poverty is the main issue. As such it does become a government responsibility. Hopefully this year, they can kick off a nationwide program.

After the fact... Governance has become a sick joke and under this present administration, the ridiculousness of governance and the level of nonchalance, bothering on ineptness and incompetence and the absolutism of corruption permeating the structures of state governance and institutions is amazingly legendary. At what point does gov't becomes truly accountable and responsible to it's mandate, as entrusted to it, by the citizenry? This state of affairs is completely and absolutely unacceptable. This is what the Ministry of Information should be doing to bring to the attention of gov't, and all the various stakeholders with an interest in healthcare delivery to brainstorm and find workable solutions, in this case clinical interventions to address some of these issues, and not defending companies in cahoots with gov't to loot and plunder the national kitty via dubious corrupt and scandalous machinations and orchestrations, tantamount to being spokespersons of these companies. The NDC gov't from all indications is unfit for the serious task of governance.

I hear you. Its frustrating but true. There was a national affordable health scheme which everyone was happy with, and happily contributed to. Yet the scheme was removed and regressed under the current government. A previously growing health sector seems to be suffering. Sadly, this pushes the vulnerable further down the chain, but, one has to keep on trying. If the departments heads do not act, they will carry the blame and responsibility from the ineffective policy makers who need to be shamed and declared unfit for purpose ?

Obviously more health centers are required and this should come from government else private business will have to do it and private care is not cheap. The quality of support at each district has be high else people will have to travel. Ministry of Health need to resolve this. The way its messing up the medical staff is deplorable. NHIS could not pay its bills largely due to corruption and misuse of resources also. Money that could have been used to support medical units - gone! But all in not lost. There are distinguished and responsible members who want to act but cannot. Raise this issue and push it through the media to draw attention for action. It will benefit those suffering and is far better than doing nothing. But pressure must be brought to bear to those at the top to release funds. It has to be released for services to the nation and the next generation. Those in power must not forget that they also will need help one day. ...People don't forget easily.

This government has taken Ghanaians too far for granted and do not care a bit what happens to us as people, the pathetically sick children and even the homeless.
I can not bring myself to believe a so called government of the left highly criminally corrupt that instead of prioritizing to make provision for the deplorable conditions of his own people from the poor North, they stay in Accra and criminally steal government monies to buy themselves private jets to fly over the heads of the poor and the deprived.
What government is so heartless, vision-less without any dream or program that take away the financial support for our teachers and nurses who we need most for the future human resource of the country?
What is the use of government providing individuals with propaganda materials like laptops, taxi cabs disgustingly to fill the already uncontrolled traffic in the cities, providing cars to girls who have no idea of how to drive?
This is so pathetic and I call on our people, especially the church to show love to these little ones of God as the government by every indication do not care.
Ghana needs a real leader who cares!!!

Sad that a non Ghanaian woman should travel to Ghana to create an awareness of such a horrible situation. These are GODS children, yet our own people due to traditional believes and ignorance have chosen to abandon these children. We have along ways to go in our development as a nation. No one needs to be called an "alligator child" These are human beings and fellow Ghanaians. Ignorance will result in such incidents of gross negligence by parents , society and government. This is not an NPP, NDC issue, but a fight against ignorance and the shortcomings of traditional believes and fears. These fears has been the down fall and negative weight against our development and transition into a modern state. Corruption by public officials has contributed towards the stagnation and death of our society. we do not need a foreign lady reading about our deficiencies by our elders, society, government, leadership etc to save the plight of children pushed down by our own ignorance into the edges of society and referring to them as "alligator children"

My heart bleeds for my country Ghana when I see such videos. Why should it take someone from the United States to come to Ghana to appeal for help to cure such diseases. These are terrible diseases which can come as a result of environmental degradation. is government of Ghana aware of this? I think the government is failing in its responsibilities and it is a shame for someone to come from overseas to help doing this. You can imagine this lady was sitting at the back of a scooter; imagine if it was a government minister visiting there, he will be riding in a Toyota Landcruiser with air condition in it. Let the government wake up to its responsibilities not only asking for votes during election time.

What is lamellar ichthyosis?
Lamellar ichthyosis is a condition that mainly affects the skin. Infants with this condition are typically born with a tight, clear sheath covering their skin called a collodion membrane. This membrane is usually shed during the first few weeks of life, but remaining effects include scaly skin and outward turning eyelids and lips. People with lamellar ichthyosis typically have large, dark, plate-like scales covering their skin. Affected individuals may also have hair loss (alopecia), a decreased ability to sweat (hypohidrosis), and a thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (keratoderma). Less frequently, affected individuals have reddened skin (erythema) and joint deformities (contractures). Infants with lamellar ichthyosis may develop infections, an excessive loss of fluids (dehydration), and respiratory problems.
How common is lamellar ichthyosis?
Lamellar ichthyosis is estimated to affect 1 in 200,000 to 300,000 individuals in the United States. This condition is more common in Norway, where an estimated 1 in 90,000 individuals are affected.
What genes are related to lamellar ichthyosis?
Mutations in at least three genes can cause lamellar ichthyosis. These genes provide instructions for making proteins that are found in the outermost layer of the skin (the epidermis). The epidermis forms a protective barrier between the body and its surrounding environment. The skin abnormalities associated with lamellar ichthyosis disrupt this protective barrier, making it more difficult for affected infants to control water loss, regulate their body temperature, and fight infections.
Mutations in the TGM1 gene are responsible for approximately 90 percent of cases of lamellar ichthyosis.TGM1 gene mutations lead to impaired formation of a structure called the cornified cell envelope, which surrounds skin cells in the epidermis. This envelope gives skin its flexibility by retaining water and helps protect the body from infection.
Mutations in the other genes associated with this condition are found in only a small percentage of cases. In some people with lamellar ichthyosis, the cause of the disorder is unknown. Researchers have identified several chromosome regions that may contain genes associated with lamellar ichthyosis, although they have not been able to identify the specific genes.
Read more about the TGM1 gene.
See a list of genes associated with lamellar ichthyosis.
How do people inherit lamellar ichthyosis?
This condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means both copies of the gene in each cell have mutations. The parents of an individual with an autosomal recessive condition each carry one copy of the mutated gene, but they typically do not show signs and symptoms of the condition.
Treatments[edit]
As with all types of ichthyosis, there is no cure but the symptoms can be relieved.
• Moisturizers
• Prevention of overheating
• Eye drops (to prevent the eyes from becoming dried out)
• Systemic Retinoids (Isotretinoin and acitretin are very effective, but careful monitoring for toxicity is required. Only severe cases may require intermittent therapy.)[7]
Psychological therapy or support may be required as well.
Where can I find information about diagnosis or management of lamellar ichthyosis?
These resources address the diagnosis or management of lamellar ichthyosis and may include treatment providers.

This is a lie. The writer of this article , Antwi Okyere-Darko is claiming that this tragedy is happening in the north when the woman in the video states that they are in the afro-western region in Ghana, which is in the south. I have printed out this article. I am going to Ghana soon and if he doesn't fix this inappropriate mistake I will go to the Human Right Commission of Ghana and report this case myself as discrimination, ignorance, nepotism, and a beget. As a journalist you should be true to yourself and state the true facts.

Ibrahim, listen again. She says the village is called Kunchini in the Upper Western Region of Ghana.
First, Kunchini is in the Upper West. Second, there is no region in Ghana called afro-western.
Third, look at the savannah-like features in the video. Even if she had meant Western Region(the closest to afro-western), the geography does not fit, and Kunchini is not in the Western Region.
Most important, the kids need help. Where they are is secondary.

Antwi, the video tells a sad story.... the story of failure of the state and government of Ghana.
We need now to form Community-based self-help movements throughout the country and tackle through the local communities problems affecting our dear nation (Ghana). If we wait for the Government, which has technically been reduced to the position of "loan-dependency, then sufferings like the one illustrated by "The Alligator Kids" can never be eliminated in Ghana.

Guys this condition occurs all over the world. I even remember a Malian couple in our residence at Accra had a child with this condition. Unfortunately, he died at the age two.
