Corruption has become a culture — Dr Akwetey
General News of Sunday, 17 November 2013
Source: graphic.com.gh
The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, has observed that corruption is becoming a cultural problem in Ghana.
“Ghanaians now tolerate corruption. It is a habit that has become a culture. It is like fire that is engulfing us. Money has become our greatest value which we have traded with integrity, honesty, moral code and so on. We need to fight the culture of corruption,” he said.
Dr Akwetey was speaking in Accra, at the launch of “Speak–Up Accountability Media Watch Project”, an anti-corruption campaign aimed at educating Ghanaians on the anti-corruption laws and encouraging the public to report corruption.
He stated that, “our society had become so engulfed by corruption that people no longer condemned those who stole from the public purse but rather praised them.”
“People now know that when they go to jail and come back they will be treated as superstars,” he said.
In politics, he added, politicians gave money to the electorates to get their votes “the understanding is that once you give me money to vote for you, when you are elected you must give me more money. That is why we hear our members of Parliament crying that the demands from the public are too many.”
Dr Akwetey observed that the presidency, instead of empowering the anti-corruption law implementation agencies, were the focus whenever the issue of fighting corruption emerged.
He said the implementation agencies were not living up to expectation because of the lack of resources and political interference.
“We must advocate for the implementation agencies which are under-resourced to be resourced and strengthened, then we can monitor them to ensure that they work,” he said and added that those institutions were to fight corruption by investigating and making sure that corruption was punished.
Speak–Up Project is a 14-month campaign by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition and the Global Media Alliance, with support from Star Ghana to curb corruption, especially in the educational and health sectors.
It is also to influence policy change relating to anti-corruption issues and would be implemented in the Western, Greater Accra and Ashanti regions of Ghana.
Using the media platform, the project would educate the public on the Whistle Blowers Act 720 (2006) with the aim of encouraging people to ‘speak-up and stand up against all forms of corruption’
Anti–corruption agencies and other stakeholders in the fight against corruption would be engaged in radio and television series on some selected media channels with the objective of educating the public on the Whistle-blower Act and the appropriate channels of reporting corruption issues.
The Communications Officer of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, Beauty Nartey, explained that the public had little knowledge of the Whistle-blowers Act “but with this campaign, we will increase public education on the effect of corruption and let people know what the Whistle-blowers Act is all about and the role they have to play.”

Religious people should only talk about religion the only thing they know. Everybody know about corruption in ghana. Why should a bishop mention it again when its not solution they are talking about.
If they can stop corruption in ghana why talk about. Things people have solution for solve it not talking about.
Give as a good example in the Vatican first before talking about few millions as compare to the Vatican billions.
Ghana needs prayer for not telling us what we already know and cant solve it. Should we kill all the corrupted people? No we shall follow the Law of the country and get our money back.
No Church has the right to talk about things they dont have solutions for.

jj and all these foolish criminal ndc politicians again are trying to create a diversion and throw smoke screens in our eyes on the issue of corruption . our corruption is a different kind especially when is rooted in some minority group or tribe making war against the Akans so undermine the economy to push the Akans further into poverty and make them again massively pick up the passports and leave . Starting from the days of Nkrumah every minority ethnic group comes to power with the mentality of my time has come '' we go chop Ghana money some '' and do everything to ensure this . nkrumah using the old strategy of divide and rule , pit brother against brother divided the fanti speaking people into 2 regions , rawlings came and used the same methods to pit part of the fantis and ashantis against each other and now pepeni is [laying the same game of northerners against southerners and all non Akans against the Akans . Billions have been approved in parliament in the past few years and the monies disappeared meanwhile they shove down our throats stories of 3,5 million and rumours of CIA basically accusing Akans again of corruption as diversions to the real truth of the looting of those hiding behind the ndc party . our problem in a nutshell is hegemony tribalism and chauvinism and the evil fruits are corruption , destruction of the economy and treacherous enmity between brothers . with out the unification of all the potentials and peoples of the land there can be no progress or development leading to industrialization and real meaning well paying jobs for our children no matter the natural resources . that is also the the problem of the Arab world who will forever remain trapped in a quasi feudal society , we Akans choose a different path and will most surely secede as there is no other alternative , long live the republic of Akan

PRIESTHOOD:
The days of priesthood are over. Who is a priest? Why so many people from different traditions are calling themselves priest? Who deserve to be a priest of God legitimately?
A priest is an ordained clergy or a minister who practice a known religion, it could be baal,hindu,budha, fetish of Africa or Mayan(ancient south Amarican empire) Egyptians, islam, cathechism and many more. Not everybody can be a priest of God Almighty call Jehovah of the bible. According to the ancient Israel which was the Land of Judah, there was only one tribe that can assumed the priesthood of God. The rest of the eleven tribe has no business putting on themselves priesthood rope. Judah, powerful and famous tribe has no business for priesthood and their father was a prostitute patron, yet brave in battle, likewise Benjamin tribe which has some prophets within their midst.
In those days prophets were not classified as priest but servants of God, through grace were annointed to take a task for the Lord God. Most of the prophets were not learnt, peasant person from nowhere comes out to be the voice of the Lord God. However, to be a priest, a person has to be of the levites. Currently, in the land of the jews, it would not be easy to distinguish between the levites and the other tribes to instituted the levites for their function in the nation of ancient Judah. How come catholicism and cathechism claiming to be the voice of God, with all persons from different persuasions like Argentina,Rome, British, Africans, Asian, Amaricans and the Europeans? The Europeans have used this blasphemous methods of deceptions to bambozzle so call third world nations to exploit their riches and resources against their knowledge, and out of the abundance of bible they're still having their way on earth.
When are we going to wake against these threatury. If the European priest is a fake, what is fake about our African fetish priest?Except the Salvation gospel of Jesus Christ. Knowing the bible very well exposes all these deceptions that sound right yet wrong in the Lord God. The devil always plant himself through his agents in the things of the true God Almighty.
They speak of love, and the Lord Jesus Christ said, love your neighbor as yourself, and even love your enemies. Thinking about loving a person you hate, how does that be? What Jesus Christ was saying is that it is better to save or present salvation to your enemies or a person one hate than hating for cruelty sake. If not this explanation, how can a person love who the person hate? Just think about it. If I can say, then christianity in it true sense should be salvation only. If A PERSON can pray to move mountains, the person finally received salvation as results of praying in faith.
Titus wrote some scriptures even though he was not an apostle and not part of the twelve disciples. So I am a disciple of Christ Jesus. Born again, pro-Jesus Christ the Lord God. I save people from deceptions of clergies, car dealers and electronic gods.

You should hammer your words in your churches, communities, in the villages, townships and cities, the places of work, the leadership, the youth, adult groups and yourselves etc. Bishop, go out and spread the word. But just talking about it is not enough. All must join force to find the best and most suitable formula to deal with this ugly social and moral disease.

One Sunday, pastor Robin Hood asked his congregation to consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns.
After the offering plates were passed, the pastor noticed that someone had contributed a $100 bill. Extremely grateful, he wanted to personally thank the generous person before the whole congregation.
A quiet, elderly woman known as Victoria Hamma shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to the pastor. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and asked her to pick out three hymns.
Her eyes brightened as she pointed to the three handsomest men in the congregation: "I'll take him and him and him."
The Pastor will bless her to steal more and more.The Pastor has been Robbing the hood to.
When the EO group got only 3% of their hard work in the oil contracts,many of the hypocrites in the NDC were accusing them of stealing from the nation but they have become the worst thieves themselves.

The sad truth about these robe wearing clowns is they step out from their protected closets where they live comfortably while most of their flock are barely surviving to take pock shots at governments of a political party they despise. Where were you clownish bunch when the all mighty Kufour proclaimed from the presidency that corruption has been with man since creation?
Did the SADA funding money start rolling in on January or February 2009? Did the GYEEDA program come into existence in 2009? The problem we will continue having in Ghana is the ability for our educated elite, political elite and so-called church leaders to speak freely without sense of shame or moral compass. If these talking heads with no shame believe that money matters then does the mismanagement of national monies matter only when NDC is in power? Does it matter when NPP is in power?
The Most Corrupt Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu should provide a Biblical chapter or passage where there are preferred sins; until then he should hang his knuckle-coconut head in shame.

you do not have to be abusive and call the clergy clowns when they express concern about the effect of massive corruption on the viability and peace in the nation...just look around africa in the last month- CAR and South Sudan...not to mention Mali...All have its roots in corruption....It is not the core competence or mission of the clergy to be political commentators but to the extent that bad governance threatens the existence and peace of the nation, it is within their purview to comment. Such commentary should not be met with ridicule and judged with tribal or political lenses. They are just watching the interest of their flock as they have devoted the lives to do. Your personal challenges with Faith should not cloud your judgement and lead you to unnecessarily attack the clergy.

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA
PROPOSAL FOR THE FORMATION OF A NON- PARTISAN TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION PRESIDENTIAL ANTI- CORRUPTION COMMISSION IN GHANA.
THE FIRST STEP IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION.
Dear President John Dramani Mahama,
May the topic under discussion, which currently is of concern to most Ghanaians, find favour with you and also with the good people of Ghana. As indicated above, I am suggesting the formation of a truth and reconciliation Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission which will be tasked with obtaining and revealing past wrongdoing (corruption) by individuals, Organizations and government. As a peace loving Ghanaian I hope my proposal will help in resolving any past conflict and enable us build a just and peaceful society that will be devoid of hatred, rancour and bitterness.
The proposed Commission will operate on the lines of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission which was established by late President Mandela and mandated to bear witness, record and grant amnesty to the perpetrators of crimes relating to human rights violations. This is one of the ways by which Ghanaians regardless of their political, religious and ethnic affiliations will show their abhorrence for corruption for it has been said that;
“To oppose corruption in a Nation is the highest obligation of patriotism.” ? G. Edward Griffin
The Commission as proposed will hold sittings in all the ten regions of Ghana at designated places including Universities to bear witness to, compile, analyse and make recommendations to the President and provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to prise open the past, draw lessons and enact adequate and enforceable laws that will help us minimize corruption with a view to eradicating it in the longer term. The primary aim is not to punish or settle scores but to send out a message to Ghanaians and all those involved to COME AND CLEAR THEIR NAMES, SEEK FORGIVENESS AND GO IN PEACE WHERE POSSIBLE. In the words of the late President of South Africa;
It always seems impossible until its done-Nelson Mandela
The Commission’s report will be an all-time document and those that will voluntarily surrender their loot or compensate the State or identified victims should be hailed as the heroes and heroines of our time. On the contrary those that refuse to come forward let them live and die with their guilt. In the words of Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor 161AD-180AD;
“Do not act as if you were going to live ten thousand years. Death hangs over you. While you live, while it is in your power, be good.”
The Commission will be non-partisan and based on modalities as were used by the earlier National Reconciliation Commission in Ghana which undertook a similar job from 2003 – 2004. Already a number of Ghanaians including your good-self, Former President J.J Rawlings, the current and past Majority leaders in Parliament, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Development Studies and some International Organizations have expressed their concerns about the menace of corruption in Ghana and the need to find solutions to the problem.
Your Excellency I must state that Corruption including the misuse of Official positions is a ‘’National canker’’ which should be tackled with all the seriousness it deserves. It deprives Institutions including hospitals, schools, utility companies and Assemblies of urgently needed funds and breeds inequities, injustice and social upheavals in our daily lives and it is necessary to bring it under control before it pushes Ghana into a major financial and Economic crisis.
It is expected that those that the system (Courts, CHRAJ ) will identify and those that are perceived to have been involved in corrupt practices will voluntarily appear or be invited to appear at the Commission, regardless of their stature in society, to tell Ghanaians the what, why, when and how of their cases. The Commission will hold public and closed door sittings where necessary in all the ten regions of Ghana and at designated places including Universities to bear witness to, compile, analyse and make recommendations.
Corruption, whether real or perceived is pervasive in Ghana. It is everywhere from the Policeman at the road block, the Customs and Immigration Official at the country’s entry points, Government Officials, JOURNALISTS, TEACHERS, MEDICAL PERSONNEL AND MORE WORRINGLY RELIGIOUS LEADERS.UNFORTUNATELY EVEN OUR CHIEFS AND QUEENMOTHERS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE RESIPOSITORIES OF OUR TRADITION AND CUSTOMS ARE ‘’RUMOURED TO BE PART OF THE WHOLE’’. Almost every Ghanaian has played his or her part either as perpetrators or by conniving and condoning or simply, as silent victims and it is my hope that the Commission as proposed will help us address the issue of corruption from delineating what it is, to outlining its effects and making recommendations aimed at eventually extenuating it. According to the great American President;
A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people. John F. Kennedy
The role of Traditional, Opinion and religious leaders in this whole exercise cannot be under estimated. They will need to synthetize the public and encourage people to come forth with the truth in the interest of the Nation. The media will have to play its part by being circumspect in their reportage on issues pertaining to the work of the Commission. It is also an opportunity for our Political leaders past and present to play their part by appearing at the Commission to tell the truth about the roles they might have played for the sake of mother Ghana. Your Excellency, much as my proposal may have the trappings of a silent social revolution, it is necessary to act now as this will mark the beginning of the National debate on corruption that Ghanaians have been yearning for. The quotation below may help put my point in perspective that; Revolutions are brought about by men, by men who think as men of action and act as men of thought. Kwame Nkrumah
Whilst we are at it we need to continuously strengthen the capacity of State institutions that have a direct role in enforcing the laws of the country. In this regard we need to streamline and enhance the performance of the Legislature, Judiciary, the Police and other Security Agencies to enable them discharge their duties efficiently and effectively to meet the expectations of Ghanaians and all other stakeholders. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all Ghanaians for taking time to read this article. Thank you and May God Almighty bless you and our Nation Ghana.
