Good leaders act; they do not wait to react to situations. Ghanaians will have difficulty electing another President from the geo-political north which the President and myself come from for more than thirty years after he has left office should this President fail to fight corruption, abuse of office and impunity in obedience to our ancestors and God during his tenure of office. The level of corruption in that era was nothing compared to what is happening today; those days the corruption was merely about hoarding, profiteering and other petty petty crimes. Nobody thought of getting one million dollars in government; people thought of owing a piece of land, car or shop. That is all!!!!!God have mercy on those executed.

At least the current issue at stake may look like Child's play and propagandist but I think it is a step in the right direction to show the world they are empathizing with the rest of the electorate.

From the President down to deputy ministers includimg Parliamentarians received more than 100% pay increase about a year ago and made it retroactively to the previous year. That meant they got another past year increament paid.

What we need Mahama to do is to stop providing housing, free petrol and electricity to all these Politicians and let them find their own accommodation and pay for them like all Ghamaians do. It is past time to do away with this archaic and colonial mentality of free housing and amenities to Politicians. The Brits who planted this slave mentality into our heads do not provide free housing to their ministers and Parliamentarians. Let them cut 50% of their pay.

London Man: I agree with your assessment about the voluntary 10% salary reduction for Ghana's elite government officials. It is an exemplary gesture. It indicates that the President and his team are aware of the gaping disparity between the government and the governed.

But beg to differ half-way on your reference to Rawlings and Kuffour, our ex-presidents, as being insensitive and not taking similar measures. From the information that I am familiar with, Rawlings, in the beginning, was an unselfish "socialist" young nationalist who did not want much for himself. It was not unusual for him to toil physically with his people unloading ships at the dock. All this might have happend more often during his "revolutionary coup" days prior to his "presidential" days. Nevertheless, it is worth giving some credit, no matter how small, when it is due. For this reason alone, if we should classify the 2 ex-Presidents as "evil", I would call Rawlings "the better of the 2 evils".

On the other hand, when it comes to personal greed, travel costs, nepotism and favours for the son and family members, the fraudulent sale of government assets, etc, only a few Ghanaians can find any externuating comments about Kuffour.

This can be achieved through financial prudence and a cut down on wasteful spedning, duplication of efforts and tasks and the so-called T&T and 'Sitting Allowance' fomerly 'expected' by people for simply turning up for meetings and workshops and now increasingly 'demanded by them!!! I have seen this in practice where public servants start by fighting for, and demanding their 'allowances' even before an event has commenced!!!

This is ridiculous, unacceptable and if I were in a position of authority in Ghana, I would cancel all these from my department. By the way we do this where in other places where I have worked.

I travel on the train a few times with the Transport, International Relations secretaries and they didn't have bodyguards or anyone carrying their briefcases. That is where monies need to be saved. In addition to this all political appointees should pay their own electricity/water bills. MP's will be motivated by this and will feel ashamed for their excessive demands. Labour unions will then tone down with their demands for salary adjustments. This will reduce the wage bill and free more money for developmental projects. If government fails to do this and continue to borrow the way they are doing now, Ghana will soon go back to HIPC
