Ghanaian politicians and government officials are still, in the 21st century, operating with Biblical Moses' time and an Archaic CIVIL Service codes, regulations, policies and some doggone silly modalities. Why have politicians hanging on through 70 years, but retiring strong and well trained police officers and school teachers at 60?? That’s monumentally INSANE, NEGROES!!
WHY continue to use the retirement age put in place by Mr. BOBO (White man) some 70 years ago?? Today, people live longer, are healthier, eat well, have good sanitation, moderately good health care, etc., etc., which the White man didn't have in those days—and that’s why they set the age at 60.
Several countries, including the mighty United States of America, don't have this foolishness to rob them of QUALIFIED, TALENTED, SKILLED, EXPERIENCED, INSTITUTIONAL KNOWLEDGE, MENTORS, and some GREY HAIR to laugh and to look up to on the job.
So, Ghanaian officials, just RE-WORK the retirement age for all CIVIL SERVANTS from 60 to 65 or 70. In America, I can retire to receive my retirement benefits only at AGE 66 and not at 60. Why are we robbing ourselves of hardworking GOOD PEOPLE, because of some age-old stupid law propagated by Mr. BOBO? Amanfuo, if time changes, you better change your damn system to fit in.

Well said Omanhene, but the question is whether our dumb legislature would take this on board! This very issue had been discussed in the past with many working Ghanaians rooting for the retiring age to be pegged at age 65 at least. As usual and characteristic of the Ghananian, nothing concrete has been done about it while we continue to lose experienced brains both in the public, civil and security services all to the detriment of national progress. Had the proposal been carried on board , we would not be having some people murmuring about present happening as in the cases of some security personnel including the sitting IGP. Over to you our Legislators and at least for once be pro-active to such a pertinent issue that border on national progress.

I am of the opinion that this is not a subject that must come under your microscope. This bothers on the security of the nation. if the Police Council deemed it fit to extend the IGP,s stray in office then it is because they have found in him somebody to complete the reformations he started. All those Snr police Officers who are not happy can dutifully resign their positions and leave the Service. They are not been forced to stay. Do you want to lead a mutiny against the Council? They must be men to cone out and say it and not hide behind you to do their biding.

the government should not give in to anybody born of a woman who incites any mutiny in the police service because of this development. is that the first time this kind of development had happened in the police? have they forgotten that there is a provision in the police act mandating this?. those irresponsible top officers wanting to take the whole country to ransom should find out the punishment for mutiny. in the military the ultimate punishment is death by firing squad after been court marshaled . we know all those npp infested top officers behind this agitation. when dr abrefa busia became the prime minister after bloody generals kotoka and Afrifa cleared Kwame Nkrumah and paved the easy way for him, he re-called a C/Inspector Ampaw from the united kingdom who had retired from the police for so many years and made him the inspector general of police instantly until general Acheampong booted them out of power in 1972. former president jj rawlings also re-called commissioner of police, ss omane from retirement and appointed him as the igp. all these happened but Ghana did not experience what some of the top officers, most of whom have reduced their ages, are alleged to be agitating. if they don't like this current action taken by the government, they should just do the honorable thing by resigning. the police is not their personal property. their political party can re-call by emulating what their mentor and political tin-god dr abrefa busia did in the 60s. is the current igp the only retired officer who had been contract? we have millions of them in the past and current.

You are fool to recommending sack an action for the wrongful retention of this oversized man for the IGP post. Do you remember Alhassan's predecessor retired a couple of months before his time was due? If he had chosen to also lobby before his retirement to get another 2 or 4 years where would Alhassan have been by now? I can tell you the police service have better qualified officers than Alhassan presently who would have filled that post with enough competency rather than ride on the lines of favouritism that will in the long run have dangerous repercussions for the police service and the country as a whole. Fire burn y'all.

Anyone employed by the Ghana Police Service is a civil servant. A civil servant who reached the retiring age and is on contract can not be the head of a department or section that he served before the retirement. He can also not earn the same salary he or she was put on before retirement, when he or she is on contract.
The above is state in the Civil Service Act, therefore the Police Council can not maintain a person who is on retirement as the head of that institution, but can employ him or her on contract and an adviser to the Inspector General of Police.
The current Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan has done what some of us have been writing about on the web for sometime, that is stationing policemen at all major road intersections and making the police visible as is the case in most developed countries.
However the extension of his appointment goes contrary to the law and that must be looked at.
A former employee of MELCOM has sued the company clamming that the compensation, meaning that the lump sum compensation paid to him was against the Workmen's Compensation Law, 1987 (P.N.D.C.L.187).
The Minister responsible for Labour and Social Welfare can only appoint a medical board if in case one which has been appointed by the employer and the injured workman has not satisfied the expectations of any of the parties.
Whenever a worker is not satisfied with a percentage awarded by a medical officer appointed by the employer he or she shall report the matter to the Labour Officer in charge of Workmen Compensation, who forward the complaint to the Chief Labour Officer who request for a Medical Board to be set up by the Ministry of Health to examine the injured workman.
We do not know the injury of the workman in the case, but it seems that his permanent incapacity was low, thus attracted not what he now pretend was the case. Injured workmen should know that compensation is paid only when your injury is healed and if there are to be any correction like plastic surgery are completed. There was the case of an injured workman who had a final medical report submitted to the Labour Department, however upon examination by the Labour Officer it was detected that some substance was still coming out of the wound that has not healed. The Labour Officer ordered the medical office to cancel that final medical report and the injured workman's injury got healed 8 months after the order.
The injured workman in this case had an agreement with the employer to accept the lump sum compensation under the law. After testifying that he or she understand the terms of the agreement in his mother language or English, if he is well educated the lump sum compensation was paid to him.
We are not aware if morning devotion was part of the employee's duties. If that is not the case the employer has all right to refuse liability, since the matter is now out of the Act under which the two parties entered the agreement and the lump sum was paid.
Now the injured workman has to prove, that the sum paid or to be paid under the agreement was not in accordance with the provisions of the subsection (1) of section15, or that the agreement was entered into in ignorance, or under a mistake as the cause of injury, or that the agreement was obtained by such fraud, misrepresentation or other means as would, in law, be sufficient grounds for rendering it null and void.
The workman having decided not to fall under the law has to prove the negligence of the employer and the employer also has to prove if the employee at the time of the accident was acting contrary to the employment and safety regulations.
