Why crying, Monsanto is already here, we have been eating Monsanto since. Who checks the foreign foods that come into the country? Who checks whether the rice, maize, onions, potatoes, beans etc,etc are Monsanto, and how do those inspectors differentiate Monsanto foods from our natural foods. Who has trained our food inspectors (FDA) and who trains them, and how are they trained. I am only happy that Monsanto awareness is now catching up with Ghana. Let us start the fight now, and let us be on our guard to prevent more Monsanto foods from coming into Ghana

Thank you for the platform. The challenge of the world is that the increasing population would force us to have serious food shortages across the world. Some parts of Ghana would not be an exception, since food is not distributed evenly across Ghana too. Another challenge is we are loosing fertile lands and water bodies for houses and another is global warming. So, food shortage or scarcity is real in many homes now. We need food security. We need food to be available and affordable to Ghanaians and the world at all times.
How do we get food security. If there is a new kinds of crops that can withstand global warming, pest and diseases, pollution of water bodies and promotion of good health, let us find them and grow them, because they would give us about 100% increase in farmers yield. If they are not there for farmers to plant, let us create them and make it cheaper for them to buy. This would enable them harvest 10 bags of rice from places they do harvest only one bag. Let us create crops that have better water of dew use efficiency so that we can grow them even where there is drought or desert. Let us create crops that can convert more solar energy into food or crops that can stay green in the high scorching sun so that our animals can have food to eat all year round and give us beet milk, meat. fur and other things that our industries would depend on. We should discourage clearing more forest for agriculture by cultivating more nutrient use efficient crops. This is what Monsanto has been doing for the world.
There is no where in the world that, new breed of crops terminate the land races, they would rather add up to genetic diversity and give farmers and consumers better choices in life.
GMO (Genetically Modified Organism)based food, clothes, medicines should be labeled to enhance choices people make for their lives. So let our children learn how to manipulate genes (genetic engineering) and how to store perishable food better for better distribution across the earth. This is the main mission of Monsanto team. Stop spreading falsehood.
We can manipulate crops in Ghana for pharmaceutical, food, textile and beverage industries. All is aiming at food and drug securities. Who told you that Even British are not engineering their own food. Empower Africa to engineer their own food and allow Biosafety Law to serve as a check for genetic engineers in Ghana. This can be done by buying the technology of genetic Engineering through Education, Mass education of Market women who are wearing genetic engineered clothes and patronizing genetic engineered borges, soybean and sunflower oils in the Market.
Let me leave you with a question. If you feed a cow with genetic engineered green grass, does the milk produced is green or white? or If you extracted oil from a very sick coconut plant (lethal yellow diseased coconut or oil palm)and use it for soap, do you see the disease in the oil or the soap? So answer me, if sun flower plant is genetically engineered against drought, and we extracted oil from the seed under intense heat, do we find DNA in the oil? So Ghanaians, let us fully understand the subject matter very well through education and also interview specialist to educate us rather than interviewing market women.
If our coconut plants are Engineered against lethal yellow virus, coconut plants can live well and produce coconut water for my father to drink in hot sun and get relieve or satisfaction. We plant breeders in Ghana need money to do more research on crops to save lives in future.
Thank you.

....I will not disagree with some issues raised in your post as these are clear for all to see(extracting food from GM crops or animals so long as the composition of the extract is not altered by the genetic modification in a manner that can potentially affect the health of the consumer is acceptable). I believe the issues at hand are the introduction into the genetic pool of altered gametes, the attendant biodiversity loss and loss of independence of the farmer after he has lost all his initial seed stock (which he would normally get from his produce or a trust provider who is not on the GM crop designer's payroll and supply chain)- let's face it the modifications use in most cases render the crops unable to produce viable seeds or to reproduce in the case of the livestock. The adoption of advances in science in the agricultural sector is necessary to ensure we have adequate produce and material to feed our society. That said it should proceed under well defined guidelines and regulation to protect us and the environment from potential adverse effects.

Can you name one GM crop on the market that is drought resistant? The only GM crops on the market are either Roundup resistant or Bt pesticides. These companies only spice up the hype to sell their wares. Which Climate Change resistant crop are you talking about here that we cannot achieve through better and less expensive agro-ecological methods?
GM crops which depend on Roundup are seeing increasing resistance from super-weeds. This has meant the use of more and stronger doses of toxic herbicides. Its impact on the environment are simply catastrophic.
GMOs in themselves have unintended consequences on human health. Traces of glyphosate which is the main ingredient of Roundup have been found in the socalled GMO-free oil of yours!

We do not need GMOS, and we do not need to do so ourselves!
If it is a question of yield, independent scientists from all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations analysed the issue carefully and came out with IAASTD report which stated very clearly that the future food needs of the world would better be met through agro-ecological agriculture, and not GM. Indeed, they pointed out that GM would play no role in increasing any yield.
You can read all about it in Mr. Duke Tagoe's Address to the Kilombo Confrenece on FSG's website: /foodsovereigntyghana.org/.
Here are some extracts that squarely adress your lies:
"Ghana and the continent of Africa, are the target of this new colonial resource grab by western corporate giants. Through the use of GMOs and seed patents, they seek to control our agriculture. Rich Duprey said it most succinctly at the Motley Fool investment site:
“While Africa has long been intransigent in its stance against introducing genetically modified crops, cracks are forming in the opposition, and the world's leading biotechs -- DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta among them --are poised to take advantage of the weakening stance and flood the market with seed, fertilizer, and pesticides. With Europe effectively closed off to GM crops, the seed and chemical giants are looking to Africa to be their next growth market.
To pave the way for choking off conventional seed stock and replace it with GM seeds, AGRA, led by Kofi Annan, issued a report last week saying opposition in Africa to GM crops is a "farce" based on a "fear of the unknown".
But it is not fear of the unknown that motivates us, it is fear of the known.
If you are not familiar with how the agro-industial, GMO centric model of agricultural production has affected other countries, let me briefly clarify that here. The main trend is that agro-industrial agriculture ultimately drives the so-called “inefficient” small scale farmers off the land. Those rural people who are left, remain mostly as “contract labourers” serving the needs of agro-industrial corporations. They work as low paid labour, where they used to own their own farms. They and their families are often beset by health problems from constant exposure to the chemicals used by agribusiness that saturate the land the water and the air.
The displaced rural populations crowd together around the urban peripheries of new super-cities. The consequences of this compulsive urbanisation are marginalisation, social fragmentation, extreme insecurity, hunger, poor nutrition, rising levels of disease. All of this combines to create ever increasing social and political destabilization. Here in Ghana, can any reasonable person think that there are enough jobs around in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale for our rural youth? Is there room for a massive increase in the ranks of those engaged in “ka ya ye” in our cities?
WHAT IS A GMO?
GMOs in agriculture are products created when the DNA of organisms is altered using laboratory techniques, Genetic modification breaks down the natural barriers between species, to create new organisms from a mix of genes from different species that could not breed in nature. Genes from plants, animals, viruses, bacteria, fungi; any may be transferred from one to another.
The pro-GM food lobby have been very clever in promoting GM food as a normal crop. This is a big lie that they use in order to by-pass regulators in several countries. GMOs are products of modern biotechnology, and they are completely different from traditional breeding and selection. There are even experiments such as inserting spider genes into goats, hoping the GMO goat will produce milk with spider silk proteins scientists can use to make bullet proof vests. And there are plenty more equally unusual combinations under experimentation.
The distinction is clear in the definition of the Cartagena Protocol which defines GMOs in agriculture as products of ‘Modern Biotechnology’ created when the genomes of organisms are transformed through laboratory techniques, including genetically engineered DNA and their direct introduction into cells. They are not techniques used in traditional breeding and selection. This laboratory-based technology requires ‘sceptical’ (doubt, don’t presume safety) analyses in rigorous risk assessment protocols including hazard identification to detect hazards and the potential to cause unintended effects.
There are two main genetic modifications that are common in commercial agriculture. One is plants that are modified so their genes carry insecticide to kill insect pests. Generally this is the bacterial insecticide Bt or Bacillus thuringiensis. There are different strains of Bt that kill various specific kinds of insects. And there are various Bt modified GMO commercial crops, maize, soy, canola, alfalfa, and others. Bt works by paralyzing the gut of the insect, or in some cases causing the stomach to explode.
The second main commercial modification of GMOs is plants that are resistant to herbicides. Most of these are resistant to the herbicide glyphosate, which is marketed by Monsanto under the name Roundup. GMO crops that resist this herbicide are called Roundup Ready. Ideally the farmer will spray Roundup on the crop, which will kill the weeds and leave the crop growing untouched. That may be true for the first years, but weeds soon develop tolerance. And new weeds that have natural tolerance start growing, requiring more and stronger herbicides every year. In parts of the US this has become so serious that even large scale farms have had to return to weeding by hand. Glyphosate is now considered a biocide, something that kills all forms of life. Yet when Monsanto began selling it they claimed it is as safe as table salt. And they still claim it is safe.
Agribusiness corporations, Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dupont, etc manufacture and patent the GMOs. They manufacture and patent the pesticides, herbicides and insecticides that are required to make them grow. The patents and intellectual property rights laws are all designed to allow and maintain corporate dominance of agriculture and to keep the money flowing in.
There are NO crops that are more drought or salt tolerant because of genetic modification,
NONE that have improved nutrition,
NONE that have genetically engineered traits helpful for surviving climate change.
Bt and HT, herbicide tolerant or Roundup ready, crops are 95% of global GMO crops.
Neither Bt nor HT crops increase YIELD. The empirical evidence of 20 years of official US data clearly demonstrates that traits for tolerance to drought, salt, sandy soils, clay soils, flood, etc as well as yield increase are being provided by traditional breeding techniques, NOT GM. Both Bt and HT crops are not sustainable methods of farming. They produce super weeds and insects and require increasing amounts of increasingly toxic chemicals to grow.
Despite this, GMO advocates constantly cry about how children will go blind and starve without GMOs.
In 1999 Arthur Anderson, LLP helped Monsanto design their strategic plan. First they asked Monsanto executives what their ideal future looked like in 15 to 20 years. The executives described a world with 100 percent of all commercial seeds would be genetically modified and patented. Anderson consultants then worked backwards from that goal, and developed the strategy and tactics to achieve it. They presented Monsanto with the steps and procedures needed *to obtain a place of industry dominance in a world in which natural seeds were virtually extinct*. Genetically modified seeds that could be patented were the tool designed to accomplish this objective.
That is what agribusiness intends for Ghana's beloved diversity of foods and seeds, that they become virtually extinct. We will then be forced to buy new seeds each year from a limited selection of patented seeds that require increasingly toxic chemicals to grow. Seed prices will rise. After Bt cotton was introduced in India the price of cotton seed rose 8000%! By law, farmers could no longer save or sell seed.
Now they are starting field trials of Bt cotton in Ghana.
GMOs are the enemy of farmers, the enemy of small-holder farming in much of the developing world, and specifically in Ghana and Africa. Yet every UN agency report says that small-holder farming is key to providing food security, not GMOs. The the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) confirms this, as does the latest UNCTAD [United Nations Conference on Trade and Development] report. I quote:
“Developing and developed countries alike need a paradigm shift in agricultural development:
[AWAY] FROM a "green revolution"
TO a "truly ecological intensification" approach.
This means we must move away from monoculture-based and high external-input-dependent industrial production, and move towards mosaics of sustainable, regenerative production systems that also considerably improve the productivity of small-scale farmers. We need to see a move from a linear to a holistic approach in agricultural management, which recognizes that a farmer is not only a producer of agricultural goods, but also a manager of an agro-ecological system that provides quite a number of public goods and services including water, soil, landscape, energy, biodiversity, and recreation."

GMO plants require highly toxic chemicals to grow, or produce their own toxic poisons, such as Bt, which kills the animals that graze on the fields.
Only those who profit from GMOs promote them. People in the UK and EU are rejecting them. Those in government who want to profit from them push them in the UK, in the EU, and are pushing hard on Africa.
GMOs are toxic. There are no tests with people because Monsanto, Syngenta, and the other agribusiness companies are afraid of the results. So we are all experiments. Kofi,
Thanks to you and Nana Akyea for the great effort to raise awareness to this very existential threat. May I add also that GMO's pose a danger whether consumed or not. They contaminate non-gmo crops and therefore a nation could potentially lose all its non-gmo seeds, if no measures for preservation have been taken. Ironically, it is known that the purveyors of gmo poison themselves have stored all the wholesome non-gmo seeds of the original crops they've been destroying thru their evil business.
As a matter of national security of the greatest import, the government of Ghana should be also storing the seeds of all our crops. It is a matter of survival but we all know our corrupt politicians will do anything for money and not give a hoot about the national interest. I therefore suggest any individual scheme by farmers organizations, or agriculture students and faculty, or an NGO to preserve our crop seeds. Also we must publicize the danger of gmo-contamination.

In India, farmers have committed suicide in the tens of thousands because Monsanto lied to them about how they could grow more cotton with their genetically modified seeds. Monsanto did not tell them that their cotton would need much more water than the cotton they had been growing for centuries. sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Monsanto_in_India Monsanto knows what is going on, but they continue to sell GM seeds because they will commit genocide for money. Also, animals driven into the GM cotton fields after harvest to graze the remaining plants died.

Hello from the US. I wish to tell you what GMO has done for us. GM corn and soybeans are modified to withstand being sprayed with herbicides. Now the weeds that the herbicides were supposed to kill have developed resistance. They are known as "superweeds" and farmers need to hire people to chop them out of the field before they can harvest, because the superweeds grow such a thick stem that they can stop huge harvesting machinery. theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/05/superweeds-a-long-predicted-problem-for-gm-crops-has-arrived/257187/
And you can search for "superweeds" on Google, because many people have written about this. Monsanto blames the farmers for using too much or too little, and now farmers must buy seeds that are resistant to much more poisonous herbicides to control weeds in their fields. care2.com/greenliving/monsanto-introduces-newest-herbicide-resistant-crop-dicamba-soybeans.html
In Illinois, the corn rootworm has developed resistance to the insecticide that was engineered into the corn (maize), and much corn was lost. bulletin.ipm.illinois.edu/?p=1629
Jere Gettle who owns Baker Creek Seed Company, reports that it is getting more difficult every year to find corn that has not been contaminated with genetically modified material. rareseeds.com/get-to-know-baker-creek/jeres-annual-letter/ (Please note that "several varieties have been lost because of this contamination." GM is not added to the seed stock, it takes it over unmercifully.) That is understandable, because the wind can blow maize pollen for miles. It is important that American farmers plant crops that are not genetically modified, as Monsanto has a nasty habit of contaminating farmers' fields with their GM, and then suing the farmer for possessing the genes that they "own". sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Goliath_and_David:_Monsanto%27s_Legal_Battles_against_Farmers My friend here in Wisconsin has gotten calls from Monsanto telling her that she must pay because their pollen has blown into her fields and therefore she "possesses" their genes and she must pay a usage fee. Many farmers have lost their farms because they tried to fight Monsanto, but did not have enough money to do so, because Monsanto is very rich.
In the film "Seeds of Death" at 14 minutes and 30 seconds, it is shown that there is something in the genetic modification process itself that is unhealthy. Even the rats that ate Roundup remained healthy as long as they were eating natural potatoes. topdocumentaryfilms.com/seeds-death/ Vandana Shiva has some interesting things to say about golden rice and its failed promise: indiatogether.org/reports/goldenrice/science3.htm
Monsanto has been doing nothing for the world, but they have been growing rich and powerful. Do not listen to their lies. Are we better off in the US for having their crops shoved down our throats for years? We are an unhealthy nation. People get enough to eat because of food stamps, but the food has little nutrition in it. People are fat, but their bodies are starving for the vitamins, minerals, and all the micronutrients that go into a healthy man or woman, boy or girl. That is what Monsanto has done for us. Do not let them enslave you. Do not become their colony. Buy instead from your "ignorant" market women, because they are selling what is necessary for your health. Learn not from people who would make money off your misery, but instead instead learn from people who have discovered ways of growing without injuring the land.

The developed world believes in evolution and the survival of the fitters. By this anything which survives has to be tried and tested by nature. This takes a long time but at the end it survives. That is the situation of the natural food items we have now. Why are they trying to force this change within a short time? More so when that change they are bringing about has not been tried and tested by nature? Nature is a closed system and natural selection is not forced from outside and it is not by manipulation. Hence we are better off keeping hands off nature. This is because the crops coming out of the manipulations require other things outside nature like their survival. We have seen this with animals. The other thing which will be needed to sustain the will still have to come from the suppliers of these seeds thereby making us dependent on the West forever.
Let us not accept this modifications and see how best we can increase food production and reduce wastage. During the operation feed yourself era any piece of idle land was used for food production and we had a lot of food. Why can't we revisit that era and improve on it. Then, when we become short of land we can revisit the era of the hanging gardens of Babylon to produce food. The latter is something people are researching on already.
By this MONSANTO cannot grab us all to dominate, direct and control to its advantage. Our mineral resources are depleting and in sometime to come we will have nothing for payment for things from the West. Are we ready to give our food out before that dreadful time comes? Africa watch out!

Jjohn Maama is a sell out who is not seeking the input of our scientists on the introduction GMOs to Ghana. We have one renowned Ghanaian prof/scientist at the University of Geotgia, called Samuel Agrrey, who literally left Legon and Nuoguchi Memorial Institute for Netherlands and Canada. A giant in genetics. NDC call Sammy Aggrey for advice. John Maama. Monsanto is a creeping danger to Africa. UK and France have banned the GMOs why is Ghana falling for such danger? NDC and Mahama must seek advice if need be. Maama is a sell out and does not believe in PNDC/NDC principles.
