The FDA must be applauded for doing a good job not denigrate it.Unlike our attitude which says that anything is possible with money, the FDA for once is proving that it is above board and that it is putting the interest of the country above parochial considerations.
Instead of Imani appreciating the stand of the FDA it has chosen this time to divert attention from the burning issue of greedy companies by- passing laid down rules and regulation at the expense of human life.
After the sixties drug thalidomide disasters the world realize even more urgently the need for drug control and regulations. The various drug agencies of the world were charged with ensuring the safety, quality and efficacy of drugs before being released for human use.For Imani to choose this time to raise its concern about the efficiency of the FDA, is not only suspicious of its role to limit the damage caused by this company but also the improper conduct to place its interest above Ghanaian lives because of personal considerations. This is irresponsible of this imnai so called think thank.
What Imani must know is that the FDA is under a legal duty to ensure that that the FDA would rely on scientific testing and that new drug approvals would be based not only upon proof of safety, but also on "substantial evidence" of a drug's efficacy which means it must be given time to do its work and not rushed. In this case the company involved has accepted wrong doing and had apologized and express regret for not following laid down procedure. This is the burning issue and any other thing at this time is an exercise at diverting attention.
The FDA must be given time to do its work. The Imani think thank should not pressurize the agency into cutting corners. It is not in the interest of Ghanaian life for them to do so and imani must know that. This raises the motive behind this Imani petition.I think it is in bad faith and must be condemned.

I think members of this 'Political' think basket love to listen/hear themselves talk. Why, is the owner of TOBINCO one of their own/sponsors? If not why have they been very silent on the good jobs of FDA in the Brong Ahafo and Ashanti Regions over the years? SHAME.

Interested in some of the crazy ideologies of the Tea Party, then they should revise their notes! In today`s business environment,Quality Assurance has become the responsibility of upstream outfits in the supply chain, and rightly so. They should therefore leave the FDA alone to execute its mandate, and not poke their long noses where they do not belong! Who in this country, and for that matter our sub-region, is not aware of the criminal activities of drug importers who have created an artificial and segemented market wherein fake and useless drugs, costing pennies to manufacture, are sprung on unsuspecting patients, and thus enable them reap mind-boggling profits?
In the current tug of war the FDA is facing with dubious drug importers, the onus is clearly on drug importers and their suppliers, that are in the main counterfeiters,to provide all the necessary information for the regulator and gatekepper, the FDA, to certify these medications for the open market. If Franklin Cudjoe and his band of 'proxy-fighters' want to go after the FDA, then they should be prepared go through us first before they get to the FDA. Enough of this errant nonsense of trying to impugn the intergrity of state insititutions that have been set up to promote the safety and wellbeing of ordinary Ghanaians!

This IMANi's latest should have been directed to the importers of drugs to set for themselves, self regulatory standards to ensure safe and quality drugs are delivered to the consuming public as is done else where. But not to attack the state foods and drugs regulator who are doing great job in recent times.

The CEO of FDA is a not a Pharmacist and therefore only interested in the regulatory aspect instead of helping to build up the capacity of the sector. It is always a cat and mouse game instead of teaming up to improve on quality and ensuring that no fake medicine enters the country. The registration process is so cumbersome that that people find ways to circumvent it.If you put an impediment in the way of a stream instead of showing it and facilitating where to pass, it will find its own way. First change the CEO ,choose a suitable pharmacist, then all things shall fall in the right places instead of an antagonistic doctor who is jealous of successful pharmacists.

Listen, the Monister of Trade, Haruna Iddrisu, is smart enough to know that he has no business meddling in purely regulatory matters! And I`ll tell you what, bona fide drug manufacturers, who hold valid patents for some of these medications, are working quietly behind the scenes in saluting the FDA.

BRIBERY SHOULD BE LAST THING ON THE MINDS OF THESE PEOPLE BUT KNOWING GHANA THIS IS A VERY POSSIBLE MOTIVATION. IF YOU TAKE A BRIBE AND ALLOW A FAKE DRUGH THROUGH, YOU DON'T KNOW WHO IT WILL AFFECT. Well, i guess a journey of thousand miles begins with the first step. FDA has been found wanting in so many areas, but does the FDA have the funding and informed enforcement officers to do the job right. There are so many lapses in Ghana that it's only miracle that no calamity has happened to us. Firstly, those who operate these pharmacy shops prescribe drugs to its customers without knowing the implications. Most of these people are not qualifies pharmacist. We all know, and the pharmacy board is aware of this but who enforces this? Secondly the FDA is responsible for making sure that the food we eat is manufactured and sold under complete hygienic environment. A visit to our manufacturing houses, warehouses, hotels, restaurants, chop bars will see that all these companies have been flouting the law. It is a law that some of these companies undertake pest control regularly, but we eat our food with cockroaches, rodents, and pest that responsible for causing most deaths in Ghana. Funding for FDA to do their job is of utmost importance, and fines for these companies who flout the laws must be deep and steep to make them adhere to it. We can recoup the money gov't has invested in FDA, so let's do something. This is not rocket science!

In the industrialized countries, when regulatory bodies inspect a factory and find it wanting, the factory is fined, asked to tell the regulatory body how the problem will be remedied, provide a time line of actions and report when they are in compliance. As a think tank, as they call themselves, they must be objective in saying things that point to the right direction. It seems the IMANI does not know what they are talking about in many cases in the country.
They are working against anything the gernvement is doing without knowing what is going on in reality.
We all know that the so called importers are also our own people fronting for these INDIANS and CHAINES compaies so, what is the IMANI talking about in the first place?
We as a society must get firm to know the evile in our society, weather it comes late or it is found on time.
No Ghanaian , can say he or she is so upright that when many people are at a place there will not be a few who will try to take advantage of the system. It a true call that THE FDA, must look into it's own nest to find out those helping these importers to do what they doing to our country. But always trying to find fault with our instutions does not really help our system but make it a failure as they want it to be.

Imani Ghana is a think tank but they are not thinking at all. The work of the FDA is to regulate the nation's phamaceutical industry not to ensuring they are building capacity. I do agree that the FDA needs to improve its facilities and processes but we must not allow private businessmen to dictate about its mandate. That is why we have a court system.
The problem with Africans and Ghanaians are lack of honesty. There is no where in any place in this world that a regulatory body like the FDA will be responsible for the capacity building of its regulated industry.

The rot that is cooking in the food, drug and pharmaceutical industry, needs to be placed squarely at the feet of the CEO of the FDA. The institutional weakness and the clear lack of leadership, coupled with the needless bureaucracy, is at the root of the breakdown of the quality assurance measures especially with respect to the health of patients and Ghanaians and I support fully the petition which the Ghanaian UK pharmacist has obliged the President, to look into the institutional failures and weaknesses, which the Dr. Opuni led administration has been presiding over.
The call by IMANI Ghana and the issues they have raised are extremely poignant and relevant, and it is crucially important that, the necessary attention is paid to the issues.
In addressing the petition by the UK Pharmacist, Ghanaians deem it right and appropriate at this juncture for the FDA CEO-Dr. Opuni to step aside, so the necessary investigations can be conducted to get to the bottom of the issues that have been raised. The FDA CEO should step aside since his continued presence at the Institution would prevent the necessary investigations from being conducted, since the issues of unregistered medicines, and other products including food, have gotten to a stage where, Ghanaians through negligence of the CEO of the FDA, and a lack of leadership, and outright corruption, have effectively turned Ghanaians into guinea pigs. We are calling on the President to set up committee to investigate activities of the FDA and in furtherance of this, the CEO-Dr. Opuni needs to step aside for this process to go on uninterrupted. The CEO cannot preside over the turning of Ghanaians into guinea pigs and seek to shift the blame on secondary actors, when indeed, the process starts from his very office.
