WHEN YAW OSAFO MARFO DECLARED WAR AGAINST CHEATING IN EXAMS AND THE CORRUPTION THAT EXIST IN ALL SECTORS HE WAS REMOVED FROM HIS POST BY NOT ALLOWING SHS EXAMS NOT TO LEAK FOR THE FIRST TIME HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY. IN THAT YEAR THE TRUE COLOURS OF MOST SCHOOLS CAME OUT. I WONDER WHERE THIS FELLOW WHO COMPAINED HAS BEEN ALL THIS TIME. THE SOURCE DID NOT INCATE IF HE IS WORKING AT LEGON OR A GRADUATE/LECTURER EDUCATIONIST AT LEGON. EVEN AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL INSTITUTION LIKE LEGON, PEOPLE WITH VERY BAD GRADE PAY THEIR WAY INTO THE SCHOOL BY BUYING THE SLOT FOR PROTOCOL. THOSE DAYS PROTOCOL WAS FOR ONLY THE WARDS OF LECTURERS. BUT THESE LECTURERS ARE VERY MUCH AWARE OF WHAT IS BEING DONE THROUGH THE BACK DOOR BY SELLING OUT THEIR PROTOCOL BUT WHO CAN COMPLAIN. CORRUPTION HAS EATEN UP EVERY FIBER IN THE COUNTRY. AS FOR KNUST THE CORRUPTION THERE CANNOT BE QUANTIFIED. SHAME UNTO ALL OF YOU.

The current pre-university education system must be changed for good. It is not serving the kids well. Students shouldn't be allowed to graduate at Gr-8 any more. The BECE exams shouldn't be certificate exams; Instead, they should be rendered as aptitude tests to guide pupils into selecting the best courses for the SHS and then to university. I believe this was the intent of introducing the BCE and the whole 12-year basic education system in Ghana. And this is the system in all advanced countries.
Simply put, the first point of graduating from basic education MUST be at Gr-12 i.e., the SHS level. The kids would have been a bit mature intellectually. The current BECE graduates who do not continue to the SHS are forced to go into the world as semi-illiterates (at best). Most turn out to be housemaids, hawkers, kay-yes, kaya-yos; the saddest of them all is that some of these young girls even become prostitutes.
We must restructure the basic school system in Ghana.

IT HAPPENED TO ME. MY DAUGHTER HAD THE PERFECT GRADE TO BE ADMITTED AT KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY. THEY EVEN WROTE HER & CONGRATULATED HER FOR HER ACHIEVEMENT AND SAID SHE WILL HEAR FROM THEM AND THEY NEVER DID.
SHE LATER ON WENT THERE WITH THE LETTER AND THEY TOLD HER THEY CAN'T ADMIT HER UNLESS SHE PAY SOME MONEY BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE CONTESTING FOR ADMISSION.
SHE LATER ON FOUND OUT THAT THOSE STUDENTS WHO DID NOT EVEN PASS THE EXAMS WERE ADMITTED.
THE GOOD STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS LEFT BEHIND. SO WHAT KIND OF A FUTURE ARE WE CREATING IN OUR BELOVED COUNTRY?

What Mr. Gyasi has set out to do, could be likened to whistle-blowing. Therefore, he must be encouraged and protected to provide all the necessary information to unfathom the scandal, rather than threatening him to divulge anything else.
He may even be able to provide just the tip of the scandal. And it would be up to the Investigative Authorities to pursue his lead.
Threatening whistleblowers with arrests and stuff like that would stifle that avenue of exposing the rot in our System. In fact, whistle-blowers must be rewarded, even monetarily, if that could help curb Corruption.
The other aspect of Public responsibility to whistleblowers is providing them with impenetrable cover and security since they could be putting their lives on the line for the good of the Nation.

My goodness! How come we Africans can not do things right after we have learnt how others do them right. Let us go back and re-join the British Examination Syndicate of the University of London and Oxford and Cambridge as existed in the olden times. At least, there was ample honesty in the way the examinations were conducted then; question leaks were minimal and results could not be tampered with. Better still, let's dissolve and rebuild WAEC. The Council is not performing its duties well, lately. Our educated youth used to perform outstandingly in foreign universities; they do not anymore.

Come on, folks, this is not the first time we have noticed corruption in our Educational System. Why are we behaving like this is a novelty expose'?
Since the 60s, Scholarships have been frequently stolen from winning Students and sold to undeserving Students. The names of Students awarded those Scholarships/Grants, based on the merit of performance in Exams, are simply stripped and replaced with the names of Students whose parents could pay. That was common with CMB scholarships awarded at Common Entrance Examinations for admissions to Secondary Schools. I was one such student whose Scholarship was denied only to be revealed by the Peace Corps Assistant Headmaster of my School, shortly later. I was compensated by a less valued Government Scholarship that provided for just above half my Fees, following a damage control compromise between the Assistant Headmaster and the School Authorities. The CMB scholarships were normally Full Scholarships.
Furthermore, my younger brother was also denied a hard won Scholarship in a hoax of a final selection in Accra after having advanced from the Regional Regional level to the National level. That Scholarship would have offered him a chance to study abroad. His attendant guiding Tutor who traveled with him to Accra from Sunyani later told him that he got some wind of why my brother was not giving the slot he so fairly deserved. The Tutor told him that some insider at Ministry where the final selection occurred hinted that students from richly-endowed areas, like Cocoa growing areas, were discriminated against to offer the students from Accra and other Regions with less abundant Natural Resources preference to advance with such Scholarships. That was most infuriating but we felt helpless to fight for my younger brother. However, as if by some divine correction, my younger brother was able to go to Medical School in Ghana to become a Medical Officer. His further Academic advancement that took him through Holland for Postgraduate Studies and the USA where he now practices, after serving at Komfo Anokye Hospital, in Ghana, testifies to his qualification for the scholarship he was denied in Ghana.
At the time of my brother's episode, I could not believe that story behind his failure to win that scholarship and thought it was simply a cooked-up reason to placate my brother whose bubble was on the verge of collapse.
But we all know from numerous subsequent incidents involving other cheated students that the trend continued.
Similarly, we all know about what happened in the "Fa wo to begye 'Gulf' " days of the Acheampong era, which culminated in the June 4th Coup. "Kalabule" was the widely accepted norm and name given the widespread Corruption that permeated our entire Government and Business environment. Yet, we now deny any such corruption existed.
It is one thing admitting the indisputable existence of that pervasive corruption, and another denouncing the Coup as not being a justifiable solution for the malaise.
So, if by 20/20 vision we now think the Coup was an aberration to our peaceful way of life and victimized some innocent citizens, that should not preclude admitting to our steep affliction by corruption in that era.
At the Universities, admissions fell victim to corruption right from the time that pre-admission interviews were introduced. That only offered the chance for corrupt Admission Authorities to impose their will and fraud under the guise of Interview filtering.
We all know about the story of Passports as well. So, why are we denying the possibility of this corruption hapening in the BECE system?
Well, even as we are still shackled by our own vices, I cannot help ending my piece with....
