Now, if you were to open a textbook from years ago, you would have found that natural resources in abundance are a source of growth and wealth for
developing countries, or so it was supposed. Why not?
If you have oil, if you have diamonds, if you have gold and copper, can't these be used to help develop the country?

President Mahama, don't be naive. This way of presenting Africa is part of the white men's propaganda against Africa in order to show the white man's supremacy. It's their way also of educating chauvinism of their people so that they love their countries and refrain from fighting their leaders for stealing them. The leaders indirectly tell them: look the way we are developing our country and see what is in Africa where leaders are corrupt and incompetent. So be proud of us. That's the message. So telling them or not it won't change anything in their politics and propaganda they had put in place against Africa. What we need to do is just to ignore them and struggle for our development not relying on them.China, russia and Brazil are there to help develop Africa.

In an overly critical environment such as the developed world where, mediocrity, sycophancy, patronage and incompetence is shunned like the bubonic plague, John Mahama's statement to the Western media, can be described as playing to the political gallery at best. In as much as many an African is extremely uncomfortable with the images which are shown by the media portraying Africa as starving continent, plagued with diseases etc, etc, if truth be told, are these images to a large extent not true? Let's bring it home to Ghana and look at the 2 issues that were raised in the above report. One was children starving - lack of food and or it's access which presupposes we are dealing with food and agriculture. What is the state of our agricultural industry in it's entirety? Again, he mentioned HIV/AIDS - Health. What again is the state of our health system? Answering these questions honestly and in truth, would put the portrayal of the western media of Africa in the proper and right perspective and context. The west for the attention of the John Mahama led NDC gov't has got standards, in agriculture, in health and it is these standards on which the western media bases it's reportage. If the portrayal of the continent and by extension Ghana is being met with disapproval with the Mahama-Amissah Arthur NDC led administration, then he should as matter of urgency, start tackling those issues, by engaging in the requisite brain activity that solves problems and not those activities that sends the country into the abyss. The NDC gov't should demonstrate that, the western media has not cause to portray Ghana and by extension the rest of the African continent in such bad light. They should demonstrate that, they can get the job done, instead of pandering to the political gallery, because, the West obviously subscribe to much more higher standards, which from all indications is lost on the President, rather pathetically.

By all means news must be reported, but why has it become a commonsensical to demean Africa in reportage? If the Western media have vowed to make it their business to disrespect Africa, Africans should NOT COMPLAIN but RESPOND in equal terms.

African media also have a responsibility: to portray the other Africa, which the western media have ignored because such positive and vibrant part of Africa cannot be exploited by western institutions for profit, yet worth reporting.

The nonsense of belittling Africa and making it a punching bag before the entile world MUST be stopped. Africa is a paradise compared to freezing environment of the West: Our rich soil and forest can only be compared to the Amazon. We're Africans: Like every people, we have our unique culture, and we'll not use the western culture as a standard of measure.

The west have citizens sleeping in the streets in the cold like you said yet they send us millions of dollars to support us whiles some of their citizens sleep on the street. Hell no, not when we can't fend for our own people to the extend that our brothers and sisters die on the high seas in an attempt to escape to the west due to the poverty our leaders have forced us into. When we spend millions on laptops during election periods when we don't even have regular supply of energy, on Akonfem projets with nothing to show, plant trees during the dry season in the north and pay dubious judgement debts running into millions of dollars. Would your neighbours respect you if you even run your family like that? Spend you money on parties and big cars and your children go to school in tattered clothes, who would respect you?

Yes every country has poor people but in Africa, our leaders create an enviroment to keeep people poor so they can lord it over them, that is the difference. That is why we struggle to command respect.

Instead of asking the media to stop these reports, make your own effort of being self-dependent and provide the good things that are sustainable just as the Eastern world like China today, the media reports will automatically change from bad to good, without you traveling all the way out there to cry yourself hoax for positive publicity. Mahama can cry 'foul' all he wants, but the images of Africa presented to the world is the direct results of things we Africans do. The starving children and lackluster economies are realities. Mahama's political party, the NDC embarks on a systematic process of looting hundreds of millions of dollars to fund its political campaign so it can stay in power. Everybody is bribed, including religious leaders and traditional leaders. In the meantime, the same Mahama government cannot find a few million dollars to repair roads, provide basic health care to the children of Ghana or keep Accra from going dark! The negative stories that we see so often will fade if Mahama and his henchmen will better govern Ghana. The same is true in Nigeria, Congo etc.

He stole billions of dollars and hid them in European banks.Today, that money has become European assets.Who knows how much money your boss Rawlings has stashed in European and Saudi banks? Yes, I dislike the "tribal" language the BBC and the UK Guardian adopt when report about any event occurring within Africa. The BBC reportage about Boko Haram in Nigeria is especially egregious -- just compare that to, say, an insurgency in Pakistan (which it is fully equivalent) and the difference is acute.

American media outlets don't report about Africa at all -- which leaves African news as such to be filtered through tendentious, frequently racist, "documentaries" that likewise use every jungle trope of Joseph Conrad and William Rice Burroughs, or as a Haiti/Detroit/Chicago on mass scale.

Straight information about Africa is genuinely difficult to obtain from Western media. That's one reason why I frequent this news blog and the ones from Nigeria (South African news can choke on the big one for all I care...). As much as you all dislike the tone, political leanings, and the grammar skills of the reporters, it is more accurate about the state of the country than anything found in Western media.

Inasmuch as there is some truth, in fact, a lot of truth to what Mahama has said, the only people who can change this negative perception about Africa are Africans, especially our political leaders. The leadership we have in Africa leaves much to be desired. Sometimes the things they say and do, one wants to hide the fact that they are African. So infantile, illogical and nonsensical, one wonders if they are indeed leaders at all. So lets do some house cleaning and then ask the outside world to follow suit.
