No wonder, when these evil Asshantis violently deported Nigerians from Ghana during the ACO in the 60s, (and STOLE their properties and shared it amongst themselves), I thought, well Nigerians faced such (horrible and barbaric experience at the hands of these WICKED Asshantis), because they are not the native of Ghana. When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor. At the time, he was lecturing part time at Columbia and pursuing his final ph.d. dissertation. What I remember about him is that he would often speak FANTI to my sister encouraging her to be closer to his wife rather than the other gullible, gossipy Ghanaians in the same complex because he found my sister articulate and educated.

I spoke often with him in Fanti and he was full of excitement whenever Ghana came up. Even at that time he did not look that old; I am surprised that he was 78.

May he rest in peace - those who knew him up close really considered him classy and he fitted into many Ghanaian ethnic groups because he spoke so many Ghana languages.... it was always difficult to pin him as an Ewe. His English was nothing like an ewe accent!!!

The name Awunor reminds me of the name of my mother Awushi meaning a man and woman born in a placenta. My late mother happen to work together with the Awunor's, Anyiroho's and others when they all went to Weita to buy sugar cane which they crushed, collected the sugar water from it, fermented it and turn it into Akpeteshi. Those were years before I was born in a little village on the River Xhenyi near Atsiavi in the Keta District.
My uncle is called Nyidexu and the young Awunor was named after my uncle.
We never met before in life and it is likely that I will be at his funeral.
Mr. Nyansafo I am of the view that Prof. Kofi Nyidexu Awunor swear an affidavit to change his name as I also did when I dropped my Christian name.
I always ask my fellow countrymen Akan tribal extremist if they care to learn and speak the language of other tribes in Ghana. It is on record that the Awunors, Tsikatas, Anyidoxos and others speak and write Akan even better than Ewe. So a person who want to call them tribalist must look at it from that angle the angle of an assumed enemy who knows your culture better than you.
May the soul of Henor Awunor rest in perfect peace, though he like the swift dead a painful death. The swifts do not fear battle, but Awunor did not went to Kenya to battle. He went there to sing and to sing the songs of peace.

There's nothing wrong in learning another language, but I Vodoo Xebieso will never tolerate any language that will be forced down my throat just because I call myself a Ghanaian. Ewes who force themselves to learn or speak Twi may be doing it for some strategic reasons, the benefit of which would be handy at the appropriate time. No holds barred.

Tell me the last time a group of Akan/Ashantis etc attacked Ewes anywhere in Ghana? I have never heard anything of that sort. During my school days, I was taught by some Ewe teachers who showed no emotion of being among Akan/Ashantis. I do not remember. During my collage days, my English tutor was Mr. Ayivor and trust me, I love him more than all the teachers who have ever taught me.

Right now, my best friend whose first name is Wisdom is more than just a friend to me. If I want somebody to do something for me, despite having some brothers and sisters, I rather rely on this guy because I trust him more than anyone else.

Efo, look, I do not understand why some of you believe what Kofi Awoonor was impacting into you and how many of you have ever questioned his mentality? The man is very divisive and if one can walk across the entire Ashanti Region and all the Akan speaking areas in Ghana, there will be a clear evidence that there is no animosity or hatred among Ewes and these tribe.

I do not like Kofi Awoonor but not all Ewes. He is well learned but he is no brainer. His sense of thinking a rather archaic and had succeeded in poisoning the minds of some of you. No one is out to get any Ewe man/woman/children for no reason. That Apollo 568 or whatever you mentioned, was someone's invention to make that person's irrational reasoning look real to fool those who cannot think and reason.

But it turned Kofi Awoonor into a contentious man in Ghana politics and you had to get close to him to discover the same witty, urbane man remained in what had become a bogeyman for some.

He served successful terms as Ghana's ambassador to Brazil and other South American countries and Cuba.

He cared for Ghana, for the black race and humanity”

As Ghana's ambassador to the United Nations, he served as chairman of the anti-apartheid committee in the critical years of 1990 to 1994 during the transition to democracy in South Africa.

He went back to teaching at the University of Ghana, Legon in the year 2000 and a new generation of Ghanaian students discovered his love of language and literature.

From 2009 to January 2013, he served as chairman of the Council of State, the main advisory body to the president of Ghana.

At 78, Kofi Awoonor might no longer be the ladies' man nor take the lead in dancing at parties but he certainly retained his wit and language dexterity, his passion for writing and he cared for Ghana, for the black race and humanity.

It is difficult to accept that a thug of an al-Shabab operative brought the life of this most interesting man to an end in such a violent, hideous and public manner.

It is sad that we shall have to remember him in connection with such a dreadful incident.

One hopes that with time, the joy and passion for life Kofi Awoonor exemplified throughout his life will emerge as his memorial and the manner of his going will lead many to his poems and the Ewe dirges that were his first love.
