Ghana water company workers praise president

A large section of workers of the Ghana Water Company Ltd under the name ‘The Progressive Brigade’ have hailed President John Mahama for his foresight and intervention in the affairs of the company, saving the company from collapse. In a statement issued in the wake of a major shake-up in the company, the workers said, “the government announced the merger of the two urban water supply companies somewhere in July, thanks to the foresight of the President of Ghana, who intervened to save Ghana Water Company from total collapse.”

“The Progressive Brigade will want to thank Mr. President and the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing for their interest in the reforms in GWCL,” the statement continued.

Some changes, referred to as a Revolution, recently took place at the leadership level of the company and the workers are happy they will bring about progress and accelerate the implementation of the company’s objectives. ING. Senyo Amengor, formerly Acting Managing Director, Ghana Urban Water Ltd. is now the Acting Deputy Managing Director, Ghana Water Company Ltd. whilst Mr. Amponsem Gyakaben, former Chief Manager Audit, is now Chief Manager of Debt Management, among others.

The workers believe “the shake-up is intended to turn the fortunes of the company,” adding that, “you cannot do the same thing and expect different results”.

They condemned the old tradition where senior chief managers were posted to Accra and the Ashanti regions and relatively young ones are sent to the smaller region, claiming, “These experiments have been on for a very long time and the company has moved from bad to worse.”

They praised the elevation of ING. Peter Deveer, former Distribution Manager-Accra East Region to the position of Acting Chief Manager Accra West Region and ING Jacob Yendor-Distribution Manager, Tema Region to Acting Chief Manager, Accra East Region, which some senior managers have issues with.

The statement insisted the two officers were hardworking men who had gained enough experienced from their chief managers to turn the fortunes of the company around, maintaining that, “these changes have restored the moral fiber of the company.

The Ghana Water Company Ltd has seen several workers’ agitation over some happenings in the company. The workers’ agitation has led to some major changes including the abrogation of a contract between government and Aqua Vitens Rand for the management of the company.
