The phrase "research allowance" by itself makes no sense. And monies paid to university lecturers must be incentives, rather than allowances. I know a lot of these lecturers either went to school or taught in foreign countries - particularly the United States and Britain. SOME (not all) universities in these countries provide research incentives for papers published and NOT research allowances paid in the hope that some professor is going to do research. How many publications have we seen from Ghanaian professors?

AFTERALL THE BOOK ALLOWANCES MUST BE SCRAPED AS SOME LECTURERS HANG ONTO THEIR OLD NOTES, AS OLD AS METHUSALA BUT ARE CLAIMING THE ALLOWANCE, THEY SHOULD GO ON THE NET TO RETRIEVE MODERN INFORMATION FOR WHICH THE UNIVERSITIES ARE ALREADY PAYING HUGE SUMS OF MONEY TO ACCESS.

The fact even is how many of these lecturers come to teach. They either sit or travel else where for their private business. I think they should be contempt with what is given them at the end of the month. I am a student in one of the universities in the country and currently at home suffering from the strike but I will say more grace to the government with the direction the government have taken. Yes someone will say the effect will come to me. But before freedom comes people have to suffer for it and I am ready to suffer to prevent these greedy but lazy lecturers from profiting from that their so called book and research allowance.

Ghana has been taken over by vagabonds, hoodlums for whom education and progress, and an improvement in the lives of those who are willing and ready, mean nothing to them, so far as, they benefit from the chaotic status quo. It is on record that, in the early or mid 90's, UTAG went on strike for close to 9 months, virtually throwing the academic calendar out of whack, and since then, the educational sector has never been the same. Fast forward to 2013, and what do we see, again under the same P(NDC) gov't?
Here is a gov't talking about competitiveness and the scaling up of the activities of our universities, with a view to address our economic situation which is in the very pits, as a result of the same ineptitude of the same NDC gov't, but the gov't is not ready to put it's money where it's mouth needs to be. Is it perfectly alright for a developing country, which needs the intellectual base to leapfrog it's developmental agenda and paradigm, to adopt an intransigent position, over, Lecturers book and research allowance? It's simply mindboggling how myopic and slow thinking this NDC party is, in seeking to address our fundamental development challenges, which is obviously educational based. Is it therefore any wonder that, Ghana continues to suffer from the failed policies and actions and continues to sink deeper and deeper into the abyss, under the NDC gov't? It goes without saying that indeed, governance has gone to the dogs. It is increasingly clear and unambiguously so, this Mahama-Amissah Arthur administration is by far the worst, most incompetent and most inept, dimwitted team ever, to have assumed the reins of gov't albeit by foul means. This most definitely is not the party Ghanaians entrusted with their mandate to lead and champion their cause for the next 4 years. This is clearly the most useless gov't ever, in the annals of the history of governance in Ghana.
