These chaps were convicted of murder which is a very serious offence to say the least.
For these so-called "NPP Youth" to turn it into a 'POLITICAL RALLYING CALL' BECAUSE OTHER 'THUGS' are abusing 'their freedoms' for other political reasons just goes to show how ignorant and foolish people can be.
The crime committed though 'politically motivated', is nonetheless a serious crime punishable by the law of the land. Their leaders should be teaching them to understand that however much you may differ with others for political reasons, that does not give you the right to take someone's "freedoms, rights and life" under any circumstances.
I simply refuse to understand why people would feel so passionately about political differences as to resort to violence of any sort. I would rather walk away (and you call me a coward) because if politics is about 'serving' and if others would not support me or allow me to serve my community, why would I resort to violence as a means of 'forcing my way' into service? Indeed I rather regard those who will pick up weapons to hurt others in order to have their way as the real COWARDS when they lose the 'argument of ideas'.
Unless of course people erroneously continue to believe that politics and political office is about creating enmity (sometimes among relatives e.g. NDC Ayariga vs. NPP Adamu recently convicted) and using 'force' or all means to come and 'chop'!! I refuse to join 'the party' and that mindset.
We should be applauding the jury for doing their job and finding the culprits guilty as charged. The judge should also be commended for passing what to me is a very fair and appropriate sentence given the magnitude of the case. Of course they have a right of appeal according to our laws and if they are successful, then the law will take its natural course.
But for anyone to "demonstrate" or seek to cause any form of chaos in this matter, the law enforcement agencies should come down very hard on them and any guilty party punished with the full force of the law to let them know ours is a society which operates on laws to protect the very freedoms that they denied someone else by murder in cold blood!

Paul, I share all the views expressed by you in your post. However, I am worried about the death sentence. I assumed Ghana has abolished the death penalty. I need some education on this or is it still on the statute books but has not been applied for some time (in the 4th Republic)?
I am also concerned about the fact that, only those from NPP were arrested, charged and tried. My understanding was that the murder occurred as a result of a clash between NDC and NPP youth. My question is, was it possible for a single NDC youth not to have committed any crime that warranted arrest, charge/s and prosecution? As I understood, properties belonging to both NDC and NPP were destroyed by youth from the opposite side. If that was the case why and how only NPP youth were arrested, charged and tried? That could be part or the root cause of the agitation by the NPP youth, though they are wrong. If they disagree with the court decision, they should use the appeal process and I applaud the NPP regional party leadership for their good work in persuading their youth not to embark on any demonstration.
To me it appears the one-sided application of the law is part of the problem and not the solution. This is almost similar to the Ya-Na trail which failed and we should avoid such form of delivering justice selectively. Was it because NDC is in government so NDC youth who committed crimes during the disturbances are free?

Kofi Ata, if you don't know, I will tell you. NDC and NPP youth has skirmishes and all dispersed to the various "bases". No one was killed or seriously hurt. Later, as NDC youths were sitting at their "base" NPP youths suddenly attacked them and murdered one of them and then wounded others. The police and the army came in to prevent the NDC youth from retaliating and so saved the situation. The youths had already dispersed before the soldiers arrived. That was how things went.
So the NPP murderers are facing the sentence.
On the Ya Naa's murder:
The Ya Naa and his elders were sitting in his palace, and without any provocation, he and his elders were being attacked with guns and bullets. Although over 20 police and 40 soldiers were stationed only 400 meters away from the Ya Naa's palace none of them attempted to intervene. For the 3 days the people were being killed at the Ya Naa's palace. The solders and police were instructed not to go to the palace. It was after the Ya Naa was killed and his body dragged outside the palace then that the soldiers were instructed to go and pick his body and send to the Yendi hospital. The soldiers watched the murderers mutilate the Ya Naa's body, and did absolutely nothing. Most of the murderers were from Liberia - mercenaries. The Ya Naa's trial was unsuccessful because those who had the evidence didn't volunteer to give it out, for fear of retribution.
But one day, the Ya Naa and the other 40 innocent elders who were murdered under Kufuor's order, will get justice. The day will come soon, very soon.
The Ya Naa's murder will not be in vein.

Tamale Man's version of the events that led to the Ya-Naa's death is not true.
First of all the Ya-Naa prepared for fighting and therefore dispatched all his wives and children to Tamale many days before the fighting started and that is why none of his wives or children were in Yendi during the fighting.
Secondly the Yendi police offered to protect him and his family but the Ya-Naa refused and said that he was capable of defending himself.
Thirdly, two days before the fighting started Ibrahim Mahama used Issah Mobila's Benz bus to take 32 armed fighters to Yendi to guard the palace instead of accepting the help that the police offered.
Fourth, according to the testimony that was given by Red who is one of the leaders of the Andani family's fighters, the Andani side surrounded the palace with armed men who were firing their guns at random just to scare away any possible Abudu side fighters but unfortunately a stray bullet hit someone from the Abudu family in a nearby house and then the Abudu side also came out and attacked the armed men. So you see that Tamale man left out all the details of the events.
Fifth of all, out of all the people who died from the Andani side only about three people were originally from Yendi, the rest of more than 30 people were trouble makers who came from Tamale and elsewhere to engage in trouble-making.
Tamale Man needs to go back and get the facts right before engaging in all this enuendo.

Yes Kofi, Ohemeng (comments above) is right. If you would recall, earlier this year during the confirmation vetting of the new Attorney-General, one of her 'big ideas' was to 'fight to abolish capital punishment in Ghana'. It appears it is still on the 'statute books' although it is rarely used these days.
I suppose in extreme cases such as this particular one which apparently was callous and gruesome, the judge probably felt that was the best form of deterrent, and perhaps also lays down a marker for those who might wish to resort to violence in these 'uncertain' times (although I would hate to think that the judge would have passed his sentence merely on such a theoretical notion).
With regards to your other question, one would hope and expect that if others were involved and if indeed they disturbed the peace and / or caused damage and / or harm to others and to property, then the law should (either have already dealt with them or) deal with them accordingly.
On the basis of that argument, perhaps one would have thought that a strong case could have been made for manslaughter (if indeed there was a fight and mayhem among NPP and NDC youth and this guy fell victim to the ultimate).
I rather suspect the picture is more complex, and it could well be that there was agitation in the day, and this poor chap was later 'ambushed' and essentially 'lynched', hence the verdict of murder. These are just my own thoughts and impressions.

In 2008 NDC activists killed 3 NPP supporters in Agbogbloshie in Accra, but those murderers have never been brought to justice. The kind of selective justice that's being practised is unacceptable. What we're hearing is completely out of place! The NDC is using the judiciary to bully Ghanaians. Anyone who doesn't belong to the "Sasabonsam Party" is classified as enemy of state. This is absurd. Ghanaians shouldn't allow themselves to be bullied. People must begin t voice out their concerns by organising protests. However, we should wait until the Supreme Court case is over, so that the NDC won' have the chance to cook up any new tricks to accuse us of anything. All they're waiting for right now is to find ways to tell the world that NPP is rather a violent party. Our youth and supporters must wait until the election petition case is over.

It would be suicidal for NPP to, as usual sing their rule of law, rule of law anthem and stand aloof for these brave and gallant party activists who did what they did in the name of the osone kokroko party to stand alone at this moment in their political life.
Should Nana and the party leadership leave these young men to face their own music, I promise that, in future, party leadership would have to mobilize their own children to campaign and fight their cause for them. As Mordicai in the book of Esther said, "if you keep mute at this time and allow the Jews to be destroyed, salvation would come from somewhere, but you and your household would perish".
I can assure you that, if the party leadership continues their selfish and I don't care attitude they show towards their NPP party supporters, they would regret one day.
How can two factions fight and only one party is made to face the law, to the extent that, one is to die by hanging, yet the party they fought for is silent. Did these guys fight for their own cause? no! they did in the name of the party.
Remember, there is no politics in Africa that, such happenings are unknown.
Please, NPP stop the rule of law, rule of law. We do not eat rule of law. The party is overly legalistic and democratic. I am afraid if NPP as a party continues to behave this way, NDC would capitalize on their perceived weakness to always cheat them. During elections, even in Accra here, some NPP supporters are not allowed to cast their vote, but the party does not care. Why wont NDC cheat all the time? This NPP attitude of law law must stop if they want to rule Ghana. I am afraid that, even the SC judges may use this attitude of NPP " nny? hwee, nny? hwee to rule against them, because they know even if you cheat them, they would not raise any red flag.
A word to the wise, they say is in the North. Please, go to the aid of these gallant men of the party as quickly as possible. Why should even those judges rule over the case at this very tensed moment in the life of the nation. Government is provoking NPP to act so as to use it as a case against them should there be violence after the SC verdict.
Nana, shake yourself a little. Be a man. If you continue this way, the presidency would elude you and all the fine ideas you have for Ghana would die with you.
Ghana needs you, Nana, Ghana needs you.

Good leadership by NPP, Tammale. But the lawyer's comment on the judgement,as previously reported, if true may, have helped to provoke the youth!
I find the timing of this judgement very inappropriate, considering:
1. That the whole nation is as at now sitting on thorns over the election petition case.
2. The suspects have been on remand for some years now and jud ...
