Whoever mooted the idea of taxing private universities and colleges is as dumb as a brick. I don't care how desperate the government is for added revenue, this initiative is highly misplaced, to say the least. The government would rather do better taxing all those mushroom churches and their pastors, who still enjoy non-taxable status.

It may sound good on the surface to say that the government should not tax schools and hospitals. But, it should not be so quickly concluded.
Many of the proprietors amass their wealth by exploiting the educational system. They charge fees that are exorbitant because they consider that a great opportunity to amass wealth. They buy big, big cars and build big, big homes without providing the necessary tools that are required of proper education. In such cases, the government should tax the schools and the proprietors. However, if the schools would reinvest their moneys to keep up with modern and international standards, then of course, the school should be granted an exemption. In other words, there should be concrete proof that whatever moneys are made in an academic year should be reinvested. The government should have such evidences to grant tax exemption.

Patrick Awuah makes a very good point that when it comes to taxation, the government needs to continue to clearly differentiate between a for-profit and not-for-profit entity. A not-for-profit school or hospital should definitely not be taxed and they should be able to prove that surpluses are re-invested to provide more of those services (education, health). The government should welcome and do everything possible to support these not-for-profit institutions because they are providing services that reduce the burden on the government. It would be short-sighted to tax such entities, and we would be retrogressing as a nation if we instituted such a policy.
It is of course okay to tax entities whose surpluses (i.e. profits) are not reinvested in education or health but are distributed to shareholders or proprietors.

Patrick,
This is a bunch of garbage. The only universities that should not be taxed are the government ones. The rest of the so called colleges and universities are money making ventures.
