Secondly, how in the world can a 4 year old escape the awareness of the mother for 400 meters (duration of absence?). Hope the facts as depicted by our Akan news reporters are accurate. They are the best in distortion of facts and history.
Personally, the Police should never have asked the woman to report to the station, but instead the officer in charge should have admonished the little rugrat in front of the mother, teaching him how important it is to listen to the mother and adults. I don't spank my kids and I don't beat the crap out of them, because I am a civilized Ghanaian, and I don't have any violent genetic lineage. My kids defy simple instructions, and I have to use speech and language to discipline them when necessary.
Last but not least we need to pass legislation to tie the tubes of some of these rural females.
Abject poverty, illiteracy, ignorance and a rash of dysfunctional cultural beliefs are the cause of our demise.

This is a teachable moment and I concur with the second part of your decision. While you are congratulating him, it is worthy to note that her mother as well as the father have responsibilities towards the child. It would be negligent on the parents' part to ignore his (child's) safety. That is how to start a conversation the child will probably remember for a long time to come.

Move away from fire should never translate to beating. I bet this is not the first time this woman has done this. Child beating is a crime against a child's psyche. A stubborn child needs to be disciplined, and that includes spanking at times. The Bible is clearly not against that.... Read Proverbs 6:20, 15:5 and 22:15 and come again.

With all due respect, I maintain my stand on the issue and it is to maintain yours. The key word here is discipline. Discipline doesn't necessarily imply spanking a child. A good parent knows and understands why her child wants to be near the fire. She is probably hungry and something is cooking and he wants faster than the mother can cook it, maybe. What I would do is give a small piece of meat to munch on and tell him to patient until it is well cooked. That child we are talking about here knows enough to understand a parent's kind words. I know because he was able to walk to the police when he felt her mother mistreated him. If he understands mistreatment, he certainly understand a good treatment when he sees one. Unlike you, I was raised by my grandmother. I was never scolded, never spanked. I also, grew up to be "very responsible person, man, father, with higher education", to borrow your words. As for the Bible, it is 2000 years old.

So, Ken, why was the boy still standing close to the fire and boiling pot after his mother had asked him to move away?
On a personal note, I grew up in a neighbourhood full of bad boys, including weed smokers, philanderers, and thieves. I played football with many of them, even looked up to some of the much older boys. But thanks to my father's guiding whip, I never took after any of them. Yet, it was only when I was in my mid-teens did I begin to appreciate my father's corrective love. One day, I surprised him by thanking him for all the spanking I'd received because I realised he meant well. From then on, the respect was mutual. He never used the whip on me again as a form of correction. The point had already been made and he was convinced that I had been brought up well enough to know and do the right thing.
The point is not to spank children excessively and, if you have to spank them as a form of correction, to let them understand why.
On the boy's behaviour, people are ignoring the possibility that CK, the policeman and probably a neighbour, must have chanced upon the boy crying from a previous beating and, as a way of cajoling the boy to stop crying, told him to report his mother to him at the police station if he was spanked again.

I share a similar experience with you. I've grown to thank my father for bringing me up the same way you're describing. Sometimes, I didn't want to go church in the evening, or will be hiding my books to get away with studies. But my father made sure I didn't have my way. Not that he beat me excessively, but I've come to appreciate whatever forms of instruction and correction he used. I love him more the more I think about his words and actions back then, and I am trying to do the same for my kids. When they grow, they will appreciate my words and actions more.
Have a great day!

If the Bible is 2000 years old and you will not go by the wisdom and instructions in the Word of God, that's fine. I'll not argue further. But know that, at times, spanking is needed in some situations. You and I do not know how many times the mother may have told the child to move away, and what she might have given the child to munch on. If any part of the child got burnt by fire or the hot oil, you probably would have had different position, and will be blaming the mom for not doing all she could to drive the child away, including using the corrective rod or stick.
On being a responsible father and not a wife beater, I made that statement because of your earlier assertion that children who are beaten end up as wife beaters, and so I wanted to prove you wrong. I did not make any statement that those that are not beaten don't become responsible fathers.
I maintain that you're still wrong on this case but you can stand your ground with your opinion, if you choose not to be swayed.

Ghanaians children go on streets to protest and to destroy other properties..so before you condemn the West, look into your own garden.

If the child got burnt from the fire or hot oil, you would probably be screaming that the mom should be jailed for not doing all she could to drive the child away. Using any form of correction, and that includes the corrective rod or stick, to avert disaster is much better than not taking any action or allowing the stubborn child to stand there, and waiting for disaster to strike.
Have a good day, you biggest MORON!

Look at this issue the other way: May God forbid, if the report was that the child got burnt from the fire or hot oil if all the mother actions to persuade him proved futile, what will be your reaction, and perhaps most people on this forum? I can bet everything I have that everybody will be screaming for the mother to be hailed.... She gave him a little "spanking" and perhaps prevented a major disaster and saved the child's life. No one knows what the outcome would be, but we should assess the case on many fronts.
Have a good day!

Perhaps those who are calling for an unimpeded right for children will also make laws that their parents do not work. It has come to light that the woman was a single mother taking care of three children alone and cooks food that she sell to workers at a location in Accra. When we can not control our children who are three and four years old, what about when they are twelve years and over. Unimpeded freedom for children elsewhere has led to them gunning down their parents, teachers and school mates whenever a simple disagreement occur. Is that the path we want to walk on as a nation. Is it because others are on that path and have become victims of their own system and upbringing, thus we should also just follow the mob.

I believe two things were happening here due to perhaps an incitement from another 'party'.
First of all, a mother (all parents) has (have)the ultimate right to protect her (their) children from danger; whether near, pending and or envisioned. It is the responsibility of a child to adhere to the parent's advise or advice; to redeem him/her from danger. On the contrary, "a stubborn fly follows the corpse to the grave".
Secondly, one may ask "how often does the mother beat this child whenever he disobeys?" It could be, that, series of harsh disciplinary measures have been meted out to this 4 years old boy in diverse ways; which might have triggered his 'unimaginable' action against the mother. In the face of this point, you and I were not there to anticipate the kind of disciplinary actions the poor boy receives.
The other 'party' Policeman CK, who is he to the small boy? How did he get to know the small boy? Why did the small boy thought of reporting the mother to the Policeman C.K if she dared beat him. Didn't the small boy know the dangers he trapped himself when standing close to the oil burning on fire? Was his disobedience to the mother's order a trap to report her to the Police? Don't you think C.K. or perhaps somebody might have incited him (a-4-year old) boy to take that action against the mother? These are some questions we need to ponder over in order to give our verdict.
If the Police should handle this matter as Domestic Violence, then how will they handle wayward children who are killing the country with Juvenile Delinquency? Will the Police cater for the boy's upkeep and up-bring of other siblings (if any) should this case be taken to court and the mother jailed? I think it is high-time we teach our children the values in our culture as Ghanaians, and the relevance of God-fearing. The 'African Civilization', which is respect and obedience to the elderly, not only our parents, submission to authority, law and order, etc.etc., can go miles of centuries to instill self discipline in both the elderly and young.
The law of a nation does not prosecute a parent who corrects a child or protects him/her from waywardness or danger, but the law will prosecute a parent who does this 'violently', and I repeat, 'VIOLENTLY'. Thank you.
This is unusual. Care must be taken in dealing with this case because you never know what the outcome will be.
No case to answer. BUT A GOOD SIGN FOR FUTURE PROMOTION OF RULE OF LAW!!!!If I AM THE FATHER i will give him a second beating for his disobedience and then congratulate him for knowing how the police works.

Your comments are uncalled for. Nobody is advocating for excessive beating or beating a child to death. You should learn how to reason and respond to someone's opinions before you called him or her a MORON.
If the c ...

Folks, this child meant what he said. The parents should take it seriously when he says "I WILL KILL YOU" Word to the wise is enough.
We all have something to learn from this 4 year old boy, I believe we must use this incident as a test case in ghana to see how effective the legal system is evolving, even if it will en in a simple caution to the mother.
In my opinion, the boy in his wisdom, had exercised his rights. That he is a minor, is no right to abuse.(beating) The mother in my opinion, should have explained to the boy about the risk involved by standing close to the na ...

Just give the policeman some fried fish. That is what they are noted for.
The young lad, who seemed to know his rights, caused a stir, as he walked for about 400 meters from his house to the police station to lodge a complaint.

This boy will become a good son.
He knows that beating can kill someone and is teaching the mother, rather, to communicate with him.

Thats the sentense I was waiting for! ...the 4 y.o. forced his mother to beat him!!! What a journalism in Ghana??
Good boy! This boy should be IGP in future..... he would ruthlessly sort out the criminals in Ghana.
It is my candid opinion that the mother of the boy be punished for being very very irresponsible, not because he lashed the boy but because she allowed the boy to walk 400m from the house to the police station in a busy town ...

If care is not taken, the boy can harm the mother by doing something silly. You cannot predict what is in his mind if nothing is done about the case.I fear for the mother
Please people of Ghana do be careful. Because if we stop disciplining our children before the age of six years, they will become wayward. Spare the rod and spoil the child as the Bible says so. Look at US. Children nowaday ...

The police should have laid the boy on a table and gave him some strong lashes for questioning his mother's right to discipline him.His refusal to take orders from the mother shows he is a stubborn child.
Let's only hope that there is nothing fishy between CK and the boy.
little isaac knows his rights but i think he should do well to know his responsibilities(beeing a good boy)

Spare the rod and spoil the child.
Reasonable chastisemrnt is not violence or assault.
Spanking a child and beating a child are two different things.

Ha ha ha, now this is democracy. We got to rethink how we treat our kids. After all, this is democracy, freedom to say or do whatever you want. Watch out, parents.
You and I were not there, the evidence is on the face of the pink which is the primary record of the election.
DIAMOND, put more elaboration on your statement or get closer to your dictionary.Reread the article you may perhaps infer there is more into the case than you think. Who is the policeman CK and his liaison to Maa Abena ?
NPP and NDC should learn from this little one how rule of law works
