Absolute gabbage and gibberish. Who forced the individual officers to join the service? How much do teachers take home to look after their dozen children? How many teachers are provided common sheds to house their wards? How much does a freshly passed out police officer takes home as compared to what the teacher takes home? Are they also not working for the public? And what is so special about the level of lukewarm attitude, ineffective and inefficient service, they render to the public to merit the high level of resource outlay the government spend in resourcing them? This man should really shut up.

over the years what has been the action plan to address these challenges. are we expecting miracles to happen in this instance too? it is not the police alone that find themselves in this quagmire so they should stop finding excuses. in any case even with their scanty housing resource, their superiors annex everything for themselves. i have seen an officer annex 4 rooms, 2 kitchens, 2 toilets and 2 baths in a barracks while his subordinates sleep 4 per room and share the same kitchen toilet and bath. incidentally the officer was keeping livestock in the other kitchen. they are their worst enemies

Mr. every worker in Ghana does same and equally important. Teachers buy their own pens, pay t&t to and fro school. Sometimes buy books, pencils and food to their pupils. Do they sell the school registers, chalk and others to make ends meet? Police men are provided with rifles and ammunition and cars unfortunately some of the cars are being used as private cars for officers. In 21st century there are no police barracks but stations, policemen are seen in patrol cars all around not in charge offices, they hid their identity not drink with friends in corners.

Tarzan had been living alone in his jungle kingdom for 30 years with only apes for company, and suitably shaped holes in trees for sex. Jane, a white British woman reporter, came to Africa in search of this legendary figure. Deep in the wild she came to a clearing and discovered Tarzan vigorously thrusting into a jungle oak. She watched in awe for a while.
Finally, overcome by this display of animal passion Jane came out into the open and offered herself to him. As she reclined on the wild grass Tarzan ran up to her and gave her a big kick in the crotch.
In pain she screamed, "What the hell did you do that for?"
Tarzan replies, "Always check for bees first."

The police only pretend to arrest drivers for bribing officials when the camera is on them.

Yes, most people will agree with the above, but the police themselves are the makers of their own misery. Are we being blamed here for not bearing with their over-sized families? How can you cram six children (sometimes more) into one room? I have always wondered why they do not practice family planning. We all know how a police barracks look like - a big mess and one wonders how they are able to live in such conditions. Teach them to practice family planning. Who obliges them to fill every inch of the one room with kids. they must learn to cut their coats acdcording to their sizes. As for the freezer, it is their trade mark; madam is always selling something to help feed the brood.

Clearly this former Police Chief does not know what many Ghanaian families are having to cope with. The conditions he describes for serving Police officers is not unfamiliar to many of us who had very humble beginnings, some in very similar occupational circumstances.
Yet I do not for one moment recall it ever incriminating or corrupting my own father!!! He never once took a bribe nor allowed himself to be influenced by others in his life. What a remarkable way to teach our children. No wonder all his children (without exception) have continued that tradition of honesty, integrity and honour irrespective of challenges and circumstances.
Should we improve conditions for our workers including the security forces, the simple answer is a BIG YES but to try to justify the illegal, wrong and irresponsible behaviour of some in the Police forces is totally wrong.
It also gives me the impression that Quantson in his own time has been the beneficiary of such favours as were unwarranted. Since he is aware of their plight, what did he do when he was in uniform? Why has he not exerted any leverage to alleviate the situation for their betterment?
Just as it is easy for others to take to the media to condemn so it is for him to remain irresponsible in trying to justify a behaviour that clearly is contributing to our corruption and people's distrust of the system.
What happened to the police officer in Nigeria though a good lesson exposing what we all know to be happening all the time in our own country, happened in Kenya some years back and was publicised on TV, but surprise, surprise, the police officers involved were not summarily dismissed as we have seen in Nigeria.
Kenya is one of the most corrupt nations in the world, and certainly in the Top 5 of corrupt nations. Police corruption is regarded as normal and goes unpunished.
Surely we can not allow ourselves to stoop so low? and the weak explanation and defence given here by Mr Quantson simply won't wash.

This gentleman is an example of what is wrong with Africa. Poor Leadership. Leadership isn't an issue for just the president, MP's and heads of ministries. Leadership is relevant right down to the police officer on the street. The reason the police officer on the beat asks for bribes is NOT due to public influence. A young cadet is trained by his experienced comrades and senior officers. Besides, the senior officer wants/needs/demands their cut of proceeds.
Although society is a big influencer, the culture of the organization is a bigger influencer and drives behaviour. Ask the military officers why they don't like their men working with the police. They are a bad influence on the military culture of discipline and professionalism.
On the issue of the barracks, this is something from the colonial days. Do the police have to stay at the barracks? Can they not get their own place? I don't know why the taxpayer has to pay for their housing (along with free electricity and water). The police should live amongst the people...that would improve security in the neighbourhoods too.

The best solution for the police in the first place is that the government of the day should initiate a move that could end the policy of housing the police. The white man who started with the idea of housing the police has runned away from that mentality and had resolved to not taking responsibity of housing the police. By the way the police is paid, so whether they like to sleep in a chamber with 4 or 6 members of their family, they like it so.
The other issue of bribery is another thing that we all have to look into to see how best we can bring in sanity into our systen of governing our nation. This very part is a great issue that need a good general strategic formular to solve our chronic corruption. Let us have in mind that as long as we are not clean, and never want to do the right thing as the law of the land requires, the tendency of corrupting the police will never come to an end.
The police too in reality are selfish and greedy people who are also not patriotic and in real sense never want Ghana to succeed. I see in the people in Police force, that they are not useful for the nation they also belong to.
It is a miserable and sad issue that people belong to a nation and never even understand that they belong to the nation in question, and hence their involvement in activities that wreck their own nation. The real African primitivity is what one sees with the action and reactions of our national police force. What a sad thing to see.
