The difference between a blackman and whiteman is vision. The colonial masters identified KINTAMPO and planted a stone there for future capital to be sited there over 200 years ago due to its strategic location in the country. It wil bridge the North and the South like ABUJA which was also identified by the whiteman. We should stop our tribalistic tendancies and think about the future development of the country. Even though Abuja is the national capital of Nigeria like Yamussokro in Ivory Coast, still the influencial cities are Lagos and Abidjan respectively. If it is a financial burden to build a new city from the start in KINTAMPO then I will suggest SUNYANI as an alternative.

I must say that everytime i read comments from this page you can only conclude by how little some of us think outside the box. How can we Ghana compare ourselves to Nigeria and US. What is the population in these countries how then should we be even thinking of creating a second capital when unemployment is at its highest. when we do not have common amenities such as electricity, water, education, health systems and proper sanitisation in most of our regions.
what measures have we put in place to deal with population growth in the cities you suggest. Can any of these towns sustain a population increase of about 5 million and still be eefficient in providing the above mentioned amenities I dont think so. Lets Reason together as a nation for the betterment of these nation and lets stop trying to do what other countries and nations are doning. Nigeria has a population of about 150 million i stand to be corrected therefore it is only reasonable for them to have two or more capital citie the USA likewise.

Where are the state construction companies town and country planning officers state civil engineers public works department? yeas your guess is as good as mine, so that they can chop from these areas they have rendered them all impotent, where in actual fact, the Trade fairs, Peduasi and all other start retreats by government was constructed by this offices and the Ghanaian politicians would call the inept because they must give the Dog a bad name just to hang it. Please do not make the mistake of comparing Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porches to VW Beetle 1962 Vintage. Accra and Kumasi are not in the leagues of Ottawa, Washington DC, Toronto, and New York. These are planned cities managed and administered by people who have brains and foresight. This said, moving the capital or creating a new capital would amount to exercises in folly if we do not get our best planners, architects, engineers and social theorists to think out how to transform both Accra and Kumasi into modern functional cities and address the overcrowding and insane magnetism of the two cities. We need to use our brains and think "outside the box".

To say that it is imperative to have another capital, you need to give us the reasons. Don't we have 10 capital towns or cities in the country? And have they helped us in our development? That is the question we need to ask before mortgaging our children's future on a phantom city.
The problem is not with Accra, but rather the mentality of our useless leaders who hardly think. The reason why Obroni put all the ministries in Accra was because they did not want to go to the bushes. After 50 years of leaving the country, we have not thought of changing anything.
Why do we still have Mining Ministry in Accra? What about that of Agriculture in Accra? What about Roads and transportation? Could these Ministries be opened at Sekondi/T'di, Sunyani or Tamale? That is the problem we have. Just think about land-locked countries without sea or lakes but could import and export anything from heavy equipments to cars to frozen meats. How do they do that?
We need to change our mentality and begin to think deeply. Power has to be given to the people. And I mean the people being given the chance to choose their own Regional, Municipal, District and Assembly ministers. That is the first step to solve this congested and pollution in Accra. It is wrong for NPP administration to choose leaders for Voltarians and equally wrong for NDC leaders to choose leaders for Ashanti Region.
The winner-takes-all system should be abolished to give way to decentralization where the government is made of people, for the people and by the people. Without that, even 10 capitals will not help. It is only when the power is given to people to FIRE their non-performing Regional, Municipal, district and Assembly ministers will the leaders learn to work.
Power has to be given to the Regions to take bold decisions in property taxes, driving licenses, educations, healthcare, passports, etc... that is the way to go. Unfortunately, because every party leader wants to satisfy their foot-soldiers and give put them somewhere, that is the reason why they have refused to change this outmoded moribund Unitary system that is retarding our growth.
Just think of the stink coming from GYEEDA, it could have happened, if we had Decentralization, because, it would be the Greater Accra Region Minister or Governor or whatever you want to call him who will be responsible to find ways to clear the trashes and not the government.
Decentralization or Perish!

How stupid, Who in this country can stand and say how much they have been robbed if not for Gas, Look at the way government has robbed Gas and you will know that having a capital or even a president living in your backyard is the worst thing that can happen to you. I dont see any problem if the government intends to move the capital city i will even welcome it because as a Ga myself i dont see what having a so called capital city has brought to us Gas. i tell you if After 130 years of being a capital city from where nine other regions have converged to do business and to live in brotherliness and still we can not boast of water flowing through our taps everyday, good roads and accommodation for all the ten regions put together then there is no need keeping it here after all what is the essence of something which has not benefited you but rather destroyed you. In the olden days the James town manstse nii Kwabena Ababio the first came with the Mantra Ablekuma Aba Kuma wo since then what has been the result for such a noble gesture by a noble man. fools parade the streets of Accra calling themselves all manner of names from Honorables to excellencies and what has there been. Instead cronyism ethnocentric non sense by all manner of people. I tell you this the very moment the capital moves which am so much looking forward to Ghana will burn because for so long we as Gas has given this state all we have our hospitality, fairness honesty and still we get nothing in return. Take it to which ever please anybody wishes but I tell you this Ghana will burn and am telling you will see how Gas will be more liberated. The fools at the offices of power are only playing this thing to suit their pocket, when the should instead be looking at how to solve a situation that could more than be taken care of. but am just waiting anxiously for this move to happen. Felix, I have been pondering over your comments and have touched my heart! My parents come from Greater Accra and Central Region and I was bred in 5 regions of the country.
It amazes me how the Gas ditch his or her fellow Gas to pamper or harbour other fellow country folks from other regions and that has helped shape Ghana in totality. Because everyone is dreaming of coming to settle in Accra for many reasons.
If the Gas are like the Ewes or Nzemas or other no nonsense tribe, I doubt if Accra would be exploded in population like that. But what do we see, the Gas are cheated, least respected, their language thrown overboard. I was in Akatsi and trying to communicate to an educated local, but she was adamant, each time replying me in the local dialect and I could not make head or tale of it. In Accra, the Gas will happily switch from their local language to Twi or English to pamper or make it easier for the non Ga who happen to be engaged in conversation. How many tribes can do that.
The Government disrepecting their traditional leaders. Gas have never had a unified Chief for almost 40 years and this is good for the Seat of the Government - that is what is perceived to be.
Moving the capitals to other places is a blessing to the Gas in disguise.

With my background as spatial location expert, I am moved by critical Loation factors(CLFs) e.g {Point of centrality, absnce of faul lines and does minimal or no danger in case of earthquakes ot tremor, etc,}to recommend for consideraton siting of the New Capital in the space between Techniman and Kintampo. The benefits are growth related ;this will serve as a growth pole/service centre for outlying rural communities such as Nkoranza, Tanoso-Akumadan, Wench-Bamboi and finally Buipe to experience spontaneous development/and thus improve up the of quality of life, in terms provision of indigenous base employment on resources of the environment.

I strongly believe the CRIC had a lot of fun and did not take into consideration how the genera public will treat this useless and needless idea of two capitals.
They should have visited the history behind the two capital countries and what brought about those two capitals. For me, if a second capital is necessary to say the least, it should be somewhere north or near north like Sunyani just to bridge the north and south. Kumasi for a second capital is pure tribalism and promotion of Ashanti monarchy. In a country with very strong political opportunists, I have every reason to believe the country's economy would be left in the control of highly polarized political area.

Ghana normally sets the trend and other African countries follow, but on this issue the Nigerians and Ivorians have stolen our thunder. A new capital is overdue. It should be a new capital that will be well planned and zoned in accordance with best practice. Kumasi is also congested and not a viable option. My preference in terms of location is the conurbation of the Northern, Brong Ahafo and Western Region. This will open up the hinterland as well as halt migration from the North to the South. This seems a more viable option in view of the oil find and allied businesses and the prospect of developing the Takoradi harbour.

Kofi you have said it all. What can I say when people see things wrongly and never want to accept an alternative way of solving a national problem. Nigeria's experience is what we have to learn from so that we shall not fall in the pit economically. Even they produce over million barrels of oil per day when they took that step, and look at how their economy is now. We now produce 110 barrels of oil per day.
Even a similar issue of a second capital in South Korea was propsed, but at a point in time they had second thought, and because of their matured mind in the area of economics they back off from that move. 'It is always easily said than done'. I always tell people that it is nice to come out with proposals, but it may be very interesting to see if it could be economically viable when it is to be carried out.

Young Liberals Party of Ghana upholds the principle of choice as the
concrete political expression of liberty and, thus, it will stand up
against all forms of authoritarianism and economic, organizational and
ideological monopolies.
We consider that all coherent policies must have two basic conditions:
1. Permanent renovation of juridical and political institutions, based
on the idea of the new replacing the old, and
2. Transparency in the political procedures employed.
The Young Liberal Party, is being created under the back-drop of
dis-sastifaction towards the two major political parties in Ghana
today. And the masses yearn for change, this therefore has created a
fertile ground for us to plant the seeds of true socialism, but we
lack funding, and we do not wish to start something and be run over by
capitalist groups that would want inject the funding we need only to
over-take our goals , therefore we humbly come to your good offices
for assistance and advice. Our research shows that now is the right
time to begin hammering our social agenda , but we lack the proper
funding for the key areas namely
1. Communications (Radio / TV outreach)
2. Transportation
3. Advancing Health care projects through our support
4. Security.
We ask you to join us.

I suggest we rather look for space between Mamfe and Koforidua or around Kintampo to build a model city to house govt embassies and diplomats. We should think ahead. Let us talk to Tackie the planner, Casely-Uayford the analyst and other developers. The issue of new capital should be widely discussed and analised. Thank you.

What has New York got to do with this discussion anyway? People in New York can choose to live in whatever way they like. We here in Ghana will decide what is good for us, regardless of what New york is like.
In any case, congestion is not the only consideration that needs to be taken before we decide whether we need a new capital city or not.

K.B. Asante's analysis has no basis.
The importance of second capital among others things is to promote national growth, diversification of national economy and above population distribution.
I have a great respect for K.B., but I think his current contribution to national discourse is becoming unproductive and self centred.
He seems to have lost touch with Reality. Ghana is gradually emerging as economic power house within the sub region. Decentralisation of state power and development across regional capitals, metropolitan capitals, municipal capitals and district capitals is as significant and equally important to the creation of second capital.
It is a fact that, Accra is choked and generally lack planning. Kumasi as identified lies at heart of Ghana. It is accessible to all corners of the country. A foresight development of Kumasi with greater communication network and transport including Train links, good roods and Aeroplane will increase national productivity.
LIST OF BENEFITS:
1. A second capital will reduce dependency on Accra for everything
2. It will help to promote population distribution in Ghana.
3. It will promote employment distribution across the country.
The concept of second capital is not a new notion. Most developed nations have strategically distributed national resources across by promoting 2nd and third capitals for both political and economic reasons,
I feel disappointed in KB stands and surprised with his reasoning as an economics.
What K.B. is possible re to accept
I recently met up with him at Wexham Park Hospital in UK

Agya Ametor,
If we are to go by your points under LIST OF BENEFITS, then I may have to remind you that we already have 10 regional capitals (and over 140 district capitals) so population, employment, wealth and commerce will be much more fairly distributed over 10 locations than on 2 ( ie Accra and proposed capital).
Nigeria has 2 capitals, yet the population of Lagos is well over 10 million, while that of Abuja is still under 2 million. Even with their federalism, Lagos is over-choked simply because there is no true decentralization there.
We only need to link the existing capitals with good roads, distribute ministries, company headquartes among the regional capitals, create jobs there and the problem will be entirely solved.
FYI: No single country within the EU has 2 capitals yet, population, infrastructure and commerce are failry distributed among individual member nations.
