USMAN of Ghanaweb News, 'oyiwa' (i.e.'here you are', in Twi language).
This story vindicates my co-forumer, USMAN, who has on every post he has made on this site expressed his displeasure at the products of our Universities.
But my take on this topic is that there is lack of any serious workable relationship between Ghana industry and education. Each seems to be on its own.
Education, in its proper place, should provide products who can find solutions to societal/industrial needs and challenges. So in my view, there should be regular intercourse between key players of industry and education to determine what courses are needed. Industry must be ready to finance education to come out with solutions to the needs of industry. For example, sponsor students to undertake studies into specific industrial needs as well as industry willingness to buy research findings of universities would both help meet needs of industry.

All of a sudden nonentities want to portray to the world how close they were to the late President.
Those who had to chat with him for one hour everyday, those Deputy Ministers who had to call him every morning before the man could even brush his teeth, and still those who would be called to the Castle by the late President to express his appreciation for job well done after they had gone to insult political opponents in the media on his behalf. Is it any surprise we have unemployment? Then the so called capitalists are not investing or will only employ their semi literate relatives who get paid a pittance so the owner can make maximum profit. Finally the state organisations are run down or looted by the same people and then shout state enterprises do not work. If the private enterprises work so well , then question is after 50 years where are they?

@Kogo T,Obviously, providing free mandatory education up to the high school level is good for every country. That education of course should have a great curriculum and the right method of learning. If a child does not have the right foundation, no matter how hard a teacher or lecturer tries to change it at the high school or university level may be too late. We need the education ministry to revamp the whole education system (primary through tertiary) so our graduates are counted in the crème de la crème as was the case before JJ came on the scene.

what industrial base does Africa have today? what kind of public service that should support the private sector? what kind of private sector? We also need to begin from teaching science and maths correctly at the early stages. And also prioritise polytechnic education and professional schools as viable rival options to the classical university.Even the teaching of engineering and IT is more theoretical than a hands on approach with linkages to the employers, industry, the suame magazines, etc! Not an easy challenge but nevertheless can be addressed with the right leadership in all sectors including academia!!

And this goes for all the universities (private & public) in Ghana – garbage in, garbage out. What the education ministry needs to do is totally revamp the whole education system, from primary to the tertiary level. Even students who graduate with Science, Technology, Engineering, Math degrees are still lacking and can’t compete with their counterparts in the developed countries. The professors just give them old notes from” Kwadwo wowo” considering the professors themselves don’t do or publish new researches as is expected in the developed countries. The students are not made to think since it is just teacher centered with little or no student participation.
Students with the right education are more innovative, marketable and employable in and outside Ghana, and won’t rely on the government to find them jobs. By the way, it is not the government’s responsibility to place graduates as most Ghanaians believe. The government is responsible for coming up with policies that enhances and grow the private sector.

Even students at the various SHS do not have the materials for practicals. Those who want to take courses in ICT do not have computers or reliable sources of electricity. The teachers to teach these sciences, maths and technical subjects are just not there or qualified to handle those subjects. So, students just go in for business and the Arts. If we are churning students for courses we don't need, blame the government and our sick educational system. Before the students get to the universities, students have already been prepared to study business and arts subjects.

I have always said this since the proliferation of these mushroom universities in Ghana. Our economy is nowhere near the level where we can accomodate all these graduates. Blame it on the poor economic planning by succesive governments who have no clue what the labour demands of the country would be in the future. Very little has changed in terms of job opportunities for the past twenty years yet these so-called universities keep churning new unemployable graduates, all looking up to the government to provide them with non-existent jobs. We have created a potentially explosive situation with huge numbers of graduates doing menial jobs after spending fortunes to acquire these education.

However, I don't blame people who fall for this trap because we are so much obsessed with paper qualifications and not one's ability to perform.
In some developed countries, when one applies for a job, they do not even care to look at one's certificates. All they do is to put the person to a test and once he or she passes, they are hired. However, in Ghana, we look at paper qualification and then hire the person. No emphasizes on one's ability to perform.

Have you Mister Minister any statistics to support your argument, or everything is by word of mouth or Twi translation so as to distort matters even worse?
The only reason we seem to observe mass unemployment is because every single child from the surrounding 9 regions have converged onto Accra, the smallest region in the State of the Union. Mr. Deputy minister that's the reason why you have to advise your government not to tax these banana universities but to assist and encourage them to re-invest their profits in curricula and infrastructure development and 2)Provide grants and incentives for all institutions of higher learning, especially public colleges and universities to equip their labs with relevant equipment for STEM education.
For a start, what about saying all private universities that re-invest all their profits in learning infrastructure and purchase of science equipment gets matching funds to double their efforts. What about saying colleges that produce certain categories of STEM graduates gets supporting grants in science equipment purchase, instead of frivolous and obnoxious taxes to raise money only to be squandered by few corrupt and greedy politicians.
Are we serious as a country, with all these empty heads parading themselves as leaders of our country.
We as country has no vision and no plan for any long term development of our country.
We should know that nothing comes by chance but through conscious efforts, plans and well thought programs tailored for our own needs and survival. American and Europe has their own problems and will not do it for us. We only had a leverage to force their hands a little bit during the cold war era but that time is past and gone.

Mr Kyereme was too close to call STEMICs and Iam clad to know, people are embracing the TRUTH that builds SUSTAINABLE Communities and Sructures.
STEMICs = SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHS, INNO-INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.
Mission
To Educate, Empower, Employ, Entertain & Enlighten - Electable & Enterpising people in communities and Equip Equitably them with “STEMIC Systems and Skills”.
STEMICs Also Empowers builders of Sustainable communities.
STEMICs is the ellipsis of Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, Innovation, Communication Skills & Systems.
It is powered by Creativity+ Research+ Innovation + Development < >“CRID”.

GHANA’s CURRICULUMS NEEDS MODIFICATION AND MODERNIZATION
01-08-2013
Dome at the age of 13 took a critical look at his dad, then said, Papa & Mama, are really STUPID. The dad being a typical African, was infuriated. He was going to beat the hell out of him but poised and pounded. The dad latter question his son why he made such rude comment? And the answer he got was very astonishing.
Dome told his dad, “I always watches them read, read and read and wondered why, they did not go out for more leisure activities, go to the beach, play football or play draft and leave the work to machines! Hmmm”!!!,
The dad asked again, “what kind of machines, he was talking about”? Domes answer was the “COMPUTER” There is nothing the computers can’t do, he said. “All the information you are struggling to store in your tiny little brains, according to Dome can be passed onto a COMPUTER in a MICROSECOND for answers”.
The remarks from the thirteen year old Dome now ……. Had serious impact on his parent’s attitudes towards EDUCATION in modern times. In Dome’s dad times, they spent hours on end on ASBSTRACT, COMPACTMENTALIZED AND RIGOROUS CONCEPTS, leaving very little time for application of concepts to solve REAL AND EXICITING PRACTICAL PROBLEMS. The dad felt very sad to still watch UNIVERSITY STUDENTS of today crack, their brains mastering CONCEPTS , which were developed by SCHOLARS 500 YEARS AGO!
You can still PRIMARY SCHOOL AND JSS STUDENTS learning CARPENTARY in the CLASSROOMS without TOOLS & WORKSHOPS IN GHANA. They can’t tell the difference between A HAMMER & A CHISESEL, let alone using them !!! Ghana produces University Graduates who are virtually the same. So where is the Ghana heading towards? There is a way, thanks to COMPUTERS, as DOME rightly pointed out!!
There is a saying that “there is nothing new under the sun except the UNKOWN HISTORY. The saying is true , that is, we should remove patterns in the National CURRICULUM that ENCOURAGES ROTE MEMORY. We should leave that to the CUMPUTER. I would like all curriculum developers and EDUCATIONIST in GHANA to meet to REVIEW and REMOVE IRRELEVANT THEORETICAL aspects in our CURRICULUM With the determination of DRAWING UP a NEW CURRICULUM, which would be, realistic in the Millennium. We should encourage more practical projects in alliance with our ROAD SIDE ELECTRICIANS, CARPENTERS, BLACKSMITHS, and REPAIRER ANF FITTERS OUSIDE LECTURE HALL AND CLASSROOMS. KUMASI MAGAZINE BOYS ARE MORE SKILLFUL THAN MOST OF OUR SO CALLED PRODUCTS, OF OUR UNIVERSITIES. I HAVE SEEN WITH MY OWN TWO YES THREE GHANAIAN FITTERS BUILD A BUS BODY FROM SCRAP METAL. DO THE INTERIOR DECORATIONS, ELECTRICALS AND EFFICIENT FINISHING WITH AN ENGINE IN KOKOMPE, BUT I WAS DISAPPOINTED, WHEN THEY LABLLED IT “MADE IN KOREA” WHEN COMISSIONED.
You draw you own conclusion as critical thinker Ghana needs your ideas, Join or support STEMIC Hubs to improve life Skills or build contemporary STEMIC Systems.

IS THIS NOT A GROSSLY WRONG UNDERSTANDING OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROBLEM IN THE COUNTRY??? How do we get a solution when the managers don't understand what is at stake?
The whole thing is that OUR SYSTEM, including the state universities, IS DESIGNED TO TRAIN GRADUATES TO GO AND LOOK FOR JOBS, rather than building them up to create jobs! Until our training structure is modified we will not get out of it. WE NEED EVERY GRADUATE! Just help them to identify their usefulness.

Ghana faces serious developmental challenges. I do not see how a degree in ancient history or archaeology can equip a student to help solve these challenges. The existence of Unemployed Graduates Association is an indictment on the usefulness of higher education, as presently configured, in our national development.
Our educational planners and administrators must sit up and introduce courses that equip our students with critical thinking skills. This will put an end to the BUBRA Syndrome on our campuses.

It is definitely misconceived to blame unemployment on increasing number of business/management universities and graduates. Are we saying that if there are no jobs, the population should remain illiterate? or under-educated?
By the way, has the Ministry of Education done any simple research to see how many job vacancies are advertised one just 1 year for:
1. business and management related fields, and then 2. Engineering related fields? i can bet my last coin that there are more openings for business/management related graduates than there are for engineering graduates. If our national economic policy does not favour industrial and manufacturing production for which reason, the market for engineering is small, we cannot blame it on private universities. The Minister should rally his own Ministry and others such as Trade and Industry, Science and technology to re-examine what dedicated national policy strategies can reverse this trend.
There are countless research reports and recommendations on how to encourage industrial productive base of Ghana.
Let's focus on that and when the demand for technical/engineering graduates grows, Universities will certainly respond and offer the needed courses.

Sir:
I beg to disagree with your statement that "It is impossible to tailor education content to meet the employment needs of society".Contrariwise, education is the means society uses to develop the brain power it needs to sole its developmental challenges. In the developed countries, there is constant dialogue between the education sector and various other sectors of society. This dialogue ensures that the education sector knows the manpower needs of society and the educational institutions develop courses that will train students who fits into labor market needs. What has not been well articulated is that Ghana does not have a manpowerdevelopment plan that portrays the country's needs over a planning period.
As it were, the education sector is doing its own thing independent of the larger society and the country's labor market needs. This has allowed some university lecturers to continue to teach from lecture notes that are older than their students. Students see education as merely memorizing archaic lecture notes in order to earn a degree/paper qualification. One other thing that is lacking in our educational system is an office for career planning and career advice to guide students in the choice of degree programs and courses. I personally, question why our universities continue to offer courses like Ancient history and Archeology. It's simply crazy and myopic.

Parent are much to be blamed as the government.
Ghanaian parents have children as a means of recreation not procreation.
They are vision-less and this means they turn out or have more babies than dreams of what they want their children to be.
To them, it is about quantity and not quality.
Since China introduced their one child policy, the country has seen tremendous growth because the concept of parenthood was completely transformed from having lots of kids one can not look after and help succeed instead of the opposite.
The government of the day once again looks on helplessly while this issue gets out of hand.
We have to go back to the period when there was enough family planning campaigns aimed at encouraging smaller and better provided for families.
If a parent lacks vision, it will eventually reflect in the standard and results of what his/her children turn out to be.
When given the right information, these same parents can be wonderful.
An example, is the need to immunize their children which most adhere to religiously.
So the burden of educating once again falls on the government to do the right time before it is too late and we have to resort to a one-child policy. God Bless Ghana.
The government has to also have a proper plan in place to encourage education of certain kinds as needed for the growth of the nation, but this is another topic another day.

The problem Ghana is facing momentarily is that most Ghanaian Engineering, Science, Agriculture graduates at the undergraduate level end up taking alternate degrees like MBA, Management or Law graduate course to become managers and lawyers; abandoning their baggage courses. The problem is a two-way street and needs a 2-way solution. What has KNUST has achieved for Ghana since Nkrumah established it in the 1960s? NOTHING! All our engineering needs are being met by foreigners (Whites). This is because government doesn't encourage scientists, inventions, and innovations in the country. Some have great ideas but lack government's support to develop those ideas into real productive achievements.

Conduct a Skills Gap Analysis Studies for Private Sector Development and determine the skills the private sector is looking for. Once that is known, the universities need to tailor their curiculum to provide training to fill these gaps. We need to move away from the century old course still being offered by our univerisities. Also the Engineering and Agriculture faculties in our Universities need to re-start the Diploma course they used to offer in the past. The two year programs they will offer could be tailored towards training of skills demaned by the private sector. Remeber, it is the private sector that will be the engine of growth in any economy.

Education is different from training. Education allows a well informed person to develop his or her ideas; become more confident in undertaking personal ventures. It's not the Govt's responsibility to employ every graduate. Some one studying business or management could use the knowledge to run his/her own business.Training on the other hand is directed at a specific discipline/profession e.g. Nursing Training. That is why almost every nurse in the country finds a job because they come out already prepared for their trade.
The Private Universities are helping to educate the population and should be encouraged to do so with humble suggestions for diversity. They should however not be forced to offer courses in areas where they lack expertise.
The situation that the Minister referred to can only be addressed through the public institutions. 'He who pays the piper calls the tune'. That is the government having a strong input into manpower development via tertiary institutions.
There are serious sanitation problems but is there a engineering faculty dedicated to finding solutions? A nationwide railway network will provide numerous benefits. Think of training railway engineers in a dedicated railway engineering faculty/institutions. They will always be needed. The success of GIMPA is a very good example of 'sound vision in politics'.

Say that again Kiki this man is just talking shop. He is the Deputy Minister for Education so he more than anyone else is in the best position to find a solution to this. The fact that he is waffling with his statistics attests the sorry nature of our problem. He can only speculate that we have a shortage of Engineers and so on but can't give authoritative estimates of what our requirements are. The Deputy Minister is responsible for planning at the national level so question is what can he do to kick start the process of driving us towards practical solutions. He is doing what Ghanaian policy makers do best, Identify the problem but no creative thinking to provide answers. He is part of the problem as he is a product of a system that has produced non-thinkers. We need leadership to take the bull by the horn and start addressing these issues instead of just talking!

To a degree there is currency in what the deputy minister is postulating about business grads in Ghana. While I agree that the country is producing graduates, I do not think the government has a concomitant responsibility to create jobs for all graduates in the country. What the government is responsible for and should be held accountable for is the creation of an environment where existing businesses can thrive and start-ups can be nourished. I believe that If students can apply what they have learned in business schools and colleges in a conducive milieu, to identify what services are needed by Ghanaians and marry available resources to create organizations that will produce services and products to fulfill the needs of the public then they can be become entrepreneurs creating jobs to help solve the existing problem of unemployment. What is lacking is the quality of the business programs and developed-entrepreneurial spirits to create businesses.

This minister has no clue about what education entails. There is no country in this world that produce more scientists than business and arts graduates. I recently advertized job opening for secondary school teachers. I was surprised to see more graduates with IT degree and science applying to teach. Within the first 48 hours of the advert, over 400 people applied and quite a sizable of them were science degree holders. The government is only interested in allowing the banking, insurance and trading industries to thrive in Ghana. Law makers and politicians have all become potheads not knowing how to solve a problem like this. Having more people to do business and arts drives the economy but never science or IT. Manufacturing based economies are making huge gains for example China, USA and Germany. This is not because of science but rather importing technology ideas and machine based manufacturing. Britain, that has it economy based on banking and selling and very little manufacturing is also doing very well. Why? Because they are more honest in working. But what do we see in Ghana? Only people who selling the so call "dog chains" are more than those who are using their minds in terms of economics and management. Technology has change the dynamics of the wealthy nations. The machines are designed and manufactured somewhere but it is the "high thinking" people who buy them and make fortune out of it. Scientist and ITC people are usually poor in society. Lets name any scientist who is rich? How many can we count? Then lets name business tycoons, and of course how many can you count? The government should not control what a person studies at school but can help formulate policies that can encourage others to have desire to become scientists without thinking of how difficult these scientists are able to support their families. Please tell me, which serious company will pay engineers more than business managers? Of course the senior management are mainly business and art graduates. Good policies will help even out the situation. All what graduate scientists can do now in a small economy like Ghana is for the Government to help them out but not to leave them to fight over non-existing engineering jobs. I have rested my case. In the USA and other advanced countries, they advertize for inventions but for us we ditch them and allow them to struggle be themselves.

If I may, this was my response to an article on this forum, onTuesday, 4 August 2009 to a brilliant article – “The side effects of Colonialism”. However, I deem it appropriate to re-edit a bit of my response to suit my response to this particular article………………………………
It is really a shame that NOTHING seems to have changed from then till now. Oh! Ghana! It goes to prove my point as follows:………………….
Our so-called ‘Education’ system is deeply-rooted i n the concept of reading a in book (in someone else’s language), memorizing it again, again and again, regurgitating it out of the ‘memory box’ unto an exam paper, get good grades and eventually attain a degree/masters and forget everything after the process.
Another sequence for this kind of education is called – ‘chew’, ‘pour’, ‘pass’ and ‘forget’, as one writer put it in the past, on this forum. Hence, perfecting other peoples’ ‘powerful tools’ (language) based on collecting knowledge without the basic understanding of its origin and value; and also mimicking their way of life as well. This is all done without any practical aspects to the implementation of the theoretical side of things.................... The result would be failure!!! Or wouldn’t it?
I am afraid, the results will always be in tune with your quote below:
QUOTE: “Sometimes I wonder why Dr. Nkrumah spent money building KNUST, when as a country, we cannot utilize basic and fundamental engineering principles to solve the problem of flooding without thinking of huge budgets”………..
I also wonder why we continue to pursue such a so-called ‘Education’ system that has churned out EEEMMMMM!!!!! politicians, leaders, elders, professionals after professionals ,after professionals, who can’t seem to think outside ‘the box’ (preferably challenge their minds) to solve our basic problems.
I prefer to use challenging of minds than the ‘box’ bit because, the box as God created does not deliver anything, so you can imagine the results of asking our folks to be thinking out of it. Hmmmmm!!!!!
Yet, you see the same old so-called ‘Educated’ politicians or rather the educated illiterates, who are elected through the same democratic (DEM-ALL-CRAZY) processes years after years, drive their 4x4’s through untarred flooded areas, to and from their massive mansions every single day. We even have ones who have their houses constructed on drainage systems. Wow! How ‘honourable’ is that?
At the same time, we have some of our citizens showering them with unwarranted accolades, instead of holding them accountable to their woeful performances as public servants. Some citizens choose to turn a blind eye to it and be partisan about it…………………………………and unfortunately, the cycle still continues. I wonder what is wrong with us. Are we for real??????
That reminds me of one of Pastor Dr. Otabil’s speeches, which was based on the ‘The Mouse’ or ‘Rat syndrome.......................... please call it what you want.
GOD BLESS GHANA!

PART TWO
“Basically, it was based on the idea of trapping an entire legion of mice invading your house, by using the same old ‘trap mechanism’ that we use today in our native Ghana. In one’s household, the ‘father mouse’ comes for the bait placed on the trap and will be trapped; the other members of the family will follow the same trend and get trapped accordingly...........
Eventually, the entire mouse family (colony) gets wiped out. It never ever seems to occur to any of the mice to think of how best to avoid the same trap that's been killing their entire family. They, for one reason or another follow suit, till they are all their colony is wiped out.” (No disrespect to anyone in person...................(it’s only an analogy).
Let’s take for example, the $50,000 car loans for our MPs?????? In the year 2009. They bought their ‘4x4’’s and use it on roads with potholes (sorry ‘manholes’) created by floods etc. The car then gets damaged……and straightaway, our ‘straight-jacket’ mentality considers more money to be pumped in to either to fix it (cost implications), or usually take out another loan to buy another car. And the cycle continues in our country…………..Wow! How do these so-called ‘Educated’ ones do it?
Surely, it can’t be the water we drink…….. Or is it?........It reminds me of the following saying: “A fool and water will go the way they are diverted”. ( it's only an analogy, please).
Somehow, the feeblest excuse you hear from our politicians and some of our own citizens is that, we are a poor nation etc. etc.. Wow!
It makes me wonder if a nation blessed with such rich resources as gold, diamond, bauxite, aluminium, manganese, rubber, hydro power, silver, salt, limestone, timber and now oil., can be considered as POOR? Hmmm!!! It’s funny how some nations have only got a resource of coal, but…………for reason, manage to invent things and develop their nations.
No! Ghana is NOT POOR as a nation, but rather poor in leadership and our mindset, coupled with misplaced priorities. Our so-called leaders and elders (I refer to as ‘internalists’) collaborate with THEIR ‘colonial masters’ (externalists) to negotiate deals that are detrimental to our citizens which results in abject POVERTY!…………………and we claim to be poor? Somehow, these are deals they would never in a million years negotiate for their own private businesses. Let alone on behalf of our beloved nation. Are they truly Ghanaians? Please ask yourselves. Especially the foot-soldiers!......... Who follow blindly!
A Ghanaian Proverb (If I may……..)
“Where error gets to, correction cannot reach.”...........In other words, “The errors of our so-called ‘Education’ system have gotten to our mindset that corrections cannot reach to provide the basic solutions to our problems”.
Hence, we are not only producing so-called graduates we do not only need but, ones who have nothing to offer Ghana but leave our country for greener pastures after the tax payer caters for them. We seem to enjoy channeling all our efforts in producing educated illiterates, just for the sake of it. We seem to think that giving the youth/schools laptops would solve all our educational problems……HELL NO!!!!
It rather leads to more of our kids surfing the porn nets and carrying out ‘sakawa’ activities. You hand them laptops and then what…………who checks on them? Are we for real???????????
Our education system is crap and only serves the interest of the colonialists and their stooges – that is ripping our dear nation off! PERIOD! THINK DEEPLY ABOUT IT GHANAIANS! The NPP and NDC parties have nothing to offer Ghanaians. They are two sides of the same useless coin.
GOD BLESS GHANA!

GHANA’s EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUMS NEEDS MODIFICATION AND MODERNIZATION.
Ghana needs A “Deliberate Transformational Educational Policy” (DTREP) Now! This Change can only be effected if we adopt more PRACTICAL & REALISTIC CURRICULUM. GOVERNMENT MUST DEVELOP A POLICY THAT WILL GRANT SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES TO STUDENTS WHO UNDERTAKE THESE COURSES AT BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES.
EQUALLY GRANT TAX HOLIDAYS TO THESES PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES WHO WILL ENGAGE IN THIS SCIENCE COURSES.
I THINK IF GOVT FOCUS ON THIS WITH SERIOUSNESS WITHOUT USUAL POLITICAL LIP-SERVICE THE COUNTRY CAN BENEFIT FROM HER GRADUANT. The old imperial system must be discarded and replaced with a more Feasible and Realistic CUURRICULUM with entails 80% PRACTICALS and 20% Theory, (Accessible Electronically). By Practicals, I mean in collaboration with our roadside artisans whom we has maginalised for far too long but our the CONESTONE TO THE Ist WORLD we ASPIRE to BUILD!
You draw you own conclusions as critical thinker, Ghana needs your ideas, support STEMIC HUBS to improve Skills or build contemporary STEMIC Systems In Ghana.

No. I don't know what you mean by "irrelevant" (you may have a point)but here is absolutely nothing wrong with THEORY. It is the FAILURE to transform theory into practice that is the problem. Behind EVERY device, gadget, electronic contraption, industrial machine, etc. are GREAT THEORIES! How would you make a plane fly? By brute force? No. You need to apply the Bernoulli Principle. There is NO other way (let's leave out witchcraft for now).
Behind the internet we all now cannot live without are a series of theoretical developments: client-server model, packet-switching, various network protocols and principles, etc.
In fact, the world today is becoming very software-driven. This is already having a huge impact on areas you would least suspect: architects and structural engineers losing jobs, post offices shutting down, factory workers being replaced by smart robots, even soccer teams trained via computer simulations.
The automobile industry is witnessing the fastest-growing transformation. Some 2012 model cars have as many as 5 onboard computers and hundreds of sensors.
The financial sector (like Wall Street) is already taken over by physicists and mathematicians, with all the modeling used to analyze stocks, risks, etc.
I could go on and on, but in short, the world today is leaning towards more BRAIN power and less brawn!

Now having realized that the critical mass required to fast track our development requires the requisite human resource capital in the science and technology field as well as ICT, what is the policy direction of the gov't in power to address this issue and what has the NDC gov't of John Mahama-the contested President done, to seek input from the various stakeholders from academia to industry, to solicit their views on how resource allocation can be prioritized to address this anomaly? The last time we checked, governance had gone so far to the dogs that, the little that our academia were doing for which they needed to be motivated to spur them on, had become a problem with them fighting gov't for their salaries, book allowances and research allowances. Is it therefore surprising that, about 99% of the private universities are choosing the easy way out? When a party which cannot think and is full of brain dead, thieving and corrupt sycophants are in power, the nation grinds to a halt.

Well, brainstorming is totally free so here we go:
(1)The government should reveal to educational institutions what the GREATEST needs are.
(2)The government should work with the bodies that craft the curriculum.
(3) Science and Math should be COMPULSORY at the Junior and High school levels. Those subjects must NOT be electives under any circumstance.
(4) Rather than opening new colleges and universities, the government (as well as entrepreneurs) should establish several INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY, with a big focus on computer science.
(5) Flood the airways with science-related media, to make the discipline attractive and fascinating to the young.
(6) Import plenty of science textbooks for the primary and secondary schools.
(7) Provide bursaries for science and engineering students at ALL levels.
Etc.

I am cool with STEM but will always believe that Ghana's numerous media potentials must be harnessed to Communicate STEM & Inno-Information, effectively the youth and the maginalised masses in general.
