Dr Tawiah, re: Talking about commonsense, please note, well run private profit making enterprises "do not pay taxes" their clients and customers do! So Taxing private universities in effect means taxing students that go to those private institutions because those private Universities will definately pass on the "profit tax" in the form of higher fees. In effect if you are not smart or lucky to get into a government funded university in Ghana, you will have to pay the government indirectly to get a University Education. This is inherent in the warning Ablakwa, that NDC loud mouth Deputy Education Minister gave recently that not everyone should go to University.
The irony is if one braves the limits of the financial burden to complete a university education and secures a better paying job, then one will be expected to pay income taxes like every citizen. Under a corruption scaldals plague government like NDC the monies would be stolen (GYEEDA and Judgement debts). For all who care to know, profit making enterprises are just fudiciaries for government tax colletion efforts. Also they charge their expenses and cost of doing business to the enterprise thus reducing the amount of taxes they pay... living on the charity of citizens. It is INDIVIDUALS that pay taxes not profit making institutions (BUSINESSES). Taxing educational institutions is a bad government policy. WE must not delude ourself. Coroprate tax is a deluision to appease people.
We must have an opened minded debate on higher education in Ghana and to set its quality standards and funding regime as are done in advanced societies including Cuba.
THIS NDC GOVERNMENT LACKS STRATEGIC VISION AND COMMONSENSE AND IDEAS.

The man is right. It is a very bad idea to tax private universities in Ghana.
Ghana needs more universities to prepare the youth for an expanding economy. Taxing them will not only increase school fees but will also dry up new ventures in private universities. If the Government doesn't want the competition, they should just say so, instead of hiding behind taxation to stall the emergence of more private universities.
I doubt if the Govt alone can meet the demand anyway. More money going into public universities means less money for other things.

You see one thing wrong with Ghanaians is they do not ask for explanations before leaping into certain affairs just like Sam Okudzeto just portrayed. Private institutions are there to make money and the government is just asking them to pay taxes on the PROFIT they make but not on the money they are collecting from the students. If you file your taxes at the end of the year and if you run a loss there is no tax to pay but if you make a profit you only pay the taxes on the profit, just like any other company does. How do we expect the country to grow if everyone does not want to pay their fare share to help the economy grow? We all expect the government to go around the world begging for money to help build our own economy and infrastructure? It does not make sense. Charity begins at home.

look at the number of these institutions that have sprung up in past decade, the kind of fees they are charging compared to publicly-owned institutions, the profit margins being enjoyed by these outfits, and tell me why they should continue to rake in such monopoly profits!
Listen, are`nt we hearing these same lame excuses from the telecos about they having to pass on any additional tax burden to customers if the govt slaps any additional taxes on them?
And you call many of these 'profit-making' assembly line facilities universities?
That old political hack,Sam Okudzeto, has already lost credibility with the good people of Ghana. Nobody should take him serious!

Ok so is this a loop hole that they are using..."According to him, most of the private Universities are registered by guarantee and not as limited liabilities and so they are not profit-making organisations to be taxed". True? Not a profit making venture? Ok they should present annual financial reports to the GRA to determine whether or not it's a not for profit organization. If it is, what have they been doing with their profits. No one is accountable in Ghana this is why people are getting away with stuff. I understand that private universities bridge the gap that governments have not been able to fill. Education is a must up to basic education. If they pass these taxes on to students, only the rich will go to school. What happens to the poor who do not have the financial backbone to continue? At the mercy of friends and family members? That is just not right!.

Why can't we face facts head on? Mr Okudzeto has final betrayed the insidious and dodgy thoughts of these private unis/colleges who register by guarantee and not as limited liability companies only to rip off the State of the legal revenue the state is entitled to. Strikingly, most of these unis belong to religious organisations who should have practiced what they preach. Look some of them have their sources of investment/finance from basically free church monies where no interest are paid to church members. The govt simply says pay taxes on profits so therefore if you really do not make profists, why grumble? These same people would complain about the state not providing infrastructures, basic utilities, social amenities and benefits, etc where will the monies come from? Do religious vehicles who engage in commercial activities not paying required road taxes and insurances? In any case, especially the religious ones if they really want to step in the gap to help the state should not charge 'high fees' because they are by principle of the same registration by guarantee charities who should know better than dodging taxes. Common sense should halt all these unnecessary debates. Fine, if they claim to need the profits to expand, in that case govt will regulate by prioritising where the monies should be invested for the benefits of all Ghanaians other than ending up in some peoples pockets. Lets be honest, is Mr Okudzeto voluneering for free in his position as council chairman for the Presby University? I bet you countrymen, the profits acquired through exorbitant fees are used to pay these topmen that's why they are crying foul.

Government can`t provide enough primary schools, let alone Universities and people who are prepared to help us out,are now going to be chased out of business.
Ofcourse Private Universities are doing business and they need to be taxed on their profits, but what we need to ask ourselves is, how important are they to society? In my view, they are very important, and as long as Government can`t provide enough Unversities we need for our children,i think they(Universities)should be exmapted from taxes.
How are many foreign Companies are being exampted from taxes in Ghana, even though we benefit very little from these foreign Companies.
NDC is just toying with the future of this nation,by trying to squeeze out private Universities out of business.
They are refusing to introduce free education, atleast at the Basic level and they are attacking Private Universities.
All they want is to keep the people dumb,so they can keep on winning elections, but do they know the damage they are doing to this Nation?
