The caliber of the teachers is a reflection of the rot in the system. I wonder if there are school inspections as were done in the old days to make sure teachers have completed their "notes" and check the quality of the notes etc. Most children are just being put through the system and so you get inferior graduates who are not employable. The folks at GES are asleep and are not formulating policies to strengthen the education system.Blame GES and not the teachers. We are reaping what we sowed.

We pride ourselves in mediocrity, and some of us like to believe we are equally intelligent as other superior cultures. I recall during post independence Education in Ghana, all Ghanaians were taught strikely in the English lamguage because it was the medium through which education was crafted. Ga, Ewe, Twi, Hausa were not educational tools, simply ethnic language tools of communicating with one another. Our languages by the way are all beautiful, but only for those sole purposes. Suddenly when the folks fro the rural Akan regions found comfort in numbers in the capital city, they craftily imposed their language on Ghanaians with a false sense of superiority and worthier language than the other languages, Hausa, Ga, Ewe, Nzema, Fanti and whatever else there is. We all sheepishly succumbed to this ignorance, now it has infiltrated our entire society, and it has manifested in its inferiority of thought, quality of life and a dysfunctional educational system. Why do we study, the sciences, law, economics and other subjects and prefer to excel in them, and boast of our credentials, but pretend that learning and speaking almost perfect English is an affront to our culture? Hypocrites from the hinterlands. We steal from the west and dilute quality life so badly and we showcase it as ours.

Stop the Twi-English education of our children, and the cultural indoctrination of our youth. Culture is not genetic, it evolves, and it transforms and it shapes future human progress. I don't need anyone to tell me when and how to speak Ga, Hausa, Ewe or Twi. Every Ghanaian speaks one or the other of these as their own personal heritage, and should be left alone to practice that at home. Teach our children superior knowledge in the language of superior learning, and we won't have any problems ever.

There are so many examples of how our over-used and induced Twi has ruined the quality of life in our society. Turn on the Radio and TV. Only a fool will choose filthy programs over quality oriented TV and Radio programs

When Kwaku Baako informed us about the atrocities of Kwesi Pratt during PNDC Regime, some of us did not believe until the truth was confirmed during the NRC. Kwesi Pratt is the most dangerous Journalist Ghana had ever have, he had the gut to recommend his fellow journalists to be executed by PNDC. Pratt even recommended Baako to be killed by the regime, thank God Baako was instead touchered violently and severely but his life was spared. This is what Kwesi Pratt can do. Now Pratt is a secret agent to NDC and US Embassy in Ghana. May God forgive Pratt and spare him the untold evils that will come upon him and his generations. The souls of those journalist killed through Pratt's recommendations to PNDC will never forgive Pratt. Now Pratt has the guts to take Diplomatic Passport and smuggled his weak-headed children to work at the Ministries under Mills NDC, may God forgive Pratt and his dependance and spare them of the evils ahead of them...

Oh, I feel sad for you and your thinking. Superior learning and Knowledge. Whether you like it or not Akan is the dominant language in Ghana. How many people who come on this forum to insult people write in their own languages? This does not make one language or people superior than others.
The usage of Akan at most places including even some offices is that Akan is a trading language. That is why Hausa is also spoken widely in Northern Ghana and our Zongos because Hausa is a trading language. Look at places like Kantamanto and Makola, Almost everybody who trades there speak Twi because Ashantis, Kwahus Bonos and fantes are the traders. Is it not true that people speak more Twi than Ga in Accra? I was surprised at how people speak twi in even Tamale. Go to Tamale now and see how the Kwahus are doing brisk business and owning real estates, especially the area around the airport. Why? Because they know that very soon the Tamale Airport may become international airport as Nkruma planed and the value of property will shoot up. I am sorry to tell you there is nobody telling you to learn any language. You have done so because it is convenient to you and your business.
The issue at stake is not about the language but about materials for learning which are not available. Then also teachers who are posted to deprived area and are not paid for months. This will not let any teacher in such situation give his/her best. When I was a little boy in even primary school, my primary school at Wiamoase had a library where pupils cold go and borrow books to read. What about now? There even no textbooks for kids and sometimes no chalk to write on. Do you see kids studying under trees? Is that acceptable in modern Ghana? It is up to the government and society to do better in promoting education.

Some basic teachers lack the vocabulary needed to express themselves to the kids, hence you hear phrases like'Me and you have do aka', meaning 'I am at loggerheads with you'. Our educational system needs a total overhaul!!

Prof, the problems are usually not the fault of the teachers but government neglect of the education sector. How can we have schools under trees? How can children study General Science without science labs. There are some schools in some areas where they have no textbooks, chalk and other learning and teaching materials. What can teachers do in the face of this.
We also have to factor into consideration how teachers and nurses are treated. How can someone be posted to a station and for close to two years that person is not paid a Pesewa of salaries due him. Teachers are Human Beings some of who have families. How can they feed their families? It means leaving the classroom sometimes to engage in other businesses so they can pay their bills and put food on the table.
I hope we have not taken into consideration the episode of DUM SO DUM SO. How can students study in a country where the lights are always out in the night?
The poor state of our economy also compels parents to ask their children to carry some economic activities to help them even if it is classes hours. I remember going on a practice teaching supervision at a Salvation Army school situated in Zongo community where a parent came to the school for his child to come home and take the sheep to pasture. This is unfortunate but how do we expect such a child to do well academically. The government needs to do more to salvage our deteriorating educational standards. It is not the fault of teachers when kids do not do well. Let us blame government and society. A school like Achimota, Wesley Girls, Aburi Girls,Pope John will not have problems with that many failures because Old Students' Association and the government help. Why? Because most ministers and parliamentarians have their kids there. What about Donkorkrom Secondary school?

They collude with the inspectors and those hiring, present fake certificate and they are given appointment letters. You may not believe but that is the truth.

Teachers should have access to training programmes that will enable them write text books, story books and the design and construct teaching aid and materials for our school children. This is the practical way to put money in the pocket of the teacher, even after their teaching career, and this will at the same time develop our educational sector. God bless our homeland Ghana.

During the start of the JSS program, I visited a friend at Tepa Bomaa and we chanced to visit the JSS in the town. The science teacher there would have to come from Tepa because he handles three schools. It was funny he was conducting an experiment and he had to use coal pot because they did not have a gas cylinder. How successful can such experiments be? No benson burner, no beaker. If government wants to hold teachers accountable, then there are many things she has to do to improve our educational system instead of showering gifts to MPs some of who are as useless as the word useless itself. How can teachers improve the standard of education when even many of these schools have no libraries and the town library has become a museum?

Practical science education is not easy to come by, even in advanced countries. There is no doubt that a hands-on approach is the most effective way to teach science. But the overhead can be quite substantial, and in many cases, the experiments near-impossible.

One viable alternative is to bus students to remote science centers. Let them spend a whole day there, listening to lectures, watching science movies, and most importantly, having some hands-on experience.

Students in remote areas without adequate science facilities should be transported to such remote centers at least once every month. I understand there are science centers in every major city in Ghana. Otherwise bus them to the universities. Consider those trips "Science Excursions".

These days, non-laboratory experience is also greatly emphasized. With computer animations, complex or expensive scientific experimentations can be quite effectively demonstrated to students.
This is because many experiments are beyond the reach of even well-financed schools. Consider for instance providing a live demonstration of how a beating heart channels blood by operating valves. Yet, by computer animation that can easily be demonstrated, thereby avoiding the dissection of a pig or a dog. Or how do you show students how black holes are formed: travel to outer space?

Many alternative tools are available for teaching science effectively. Rely on DVD's, educational trips, and computer animations (an example can be seen on brainpop.com. Our computer students must be encouraged to learn how to make such animations).

I hate when I read Ghanaians talk about "OUR NATIVE LANGUAGES", because none of those who make these statements, has any love, respect or admiration for any other Ghanaian language except their own.

So stop the crap, and leave our teachers to master their craft in English, so they can impact that quality knowledge unto our children. Etiquette, culture and language must be left to be taught at home and in our rural communities PERIOD. SOLVED!!!

When I visited a school in Ghana, it was just 4 weeks before the BECE exams and it was that very day that some of the text books the teachers needed to teach had arrived. Blame the government, not the teachers.
