Politics is for astute politicians who have ideas that help a country and its citizenry move forward.
Spending state monies to build schools or other infrastructure can be done by anybody, but how to raise the monies involved to execute the projects without bringing untold hardship to the citizenry is what matters.
We don't beg or force anyone to be a president and enjoy all the freebies for himself and his family, so whoever knows that s/he cannot perform within 4 years should not bother to ask for votes.
It's simple.

Pratt even recommended Baako to be killed by the regime, thank God Baako was instead touchered violently and severely but his life was spared. This is what Kwesi Pratt can do. Now Pratt is a secret agent to NDC and US Embassy in Ghana. May God forgive Pratt and spare him the untold evils that will come upon him and his generations. The souls of those journalist killed through Pratt's recommendations to PNDC will never forgive Pratt. Now Pratt has the guts to take Diplomatic Passport and smuggled his weak-headed children to work at the Ministries under Mills NDC, may God forgive Pratt and his dependance and spare them of the evils ahead of them...

There is a good reason for the 4 year term, that way non-performing Administrations can be assesed by the people and given the thumbs down and booted out if need be. The worst thing that can befall any Country is a long term Presidency manned by incompetent people. With the four year term if they have proved themselves the people give them their mandate again. Its all about checks and balances.
The trouble we have in Ghana is lack of Continuity and the Party Political bias and greed by people who seem to have all the right ideas and say all the right things only to shelve it when they get into power. Had it not been so it wouldn't matter if a Government spent 4 years or less; the show will still go on because it is a relay not a one man, one govt, one party race. Patriots Wanted.

Developing a common agenda for the state will be a panacea to the current situation where projects are abondoned by in-coming government.
The first thing any president need to do when assume office is to takle the economy. Take stabilization measures and pursue growth later. But if we have a national program which every new government would have to follow, there will be growth and there will be no need to stabilize.
We are in this mess because of the route of governance we have chosen. Change it and you will find the progress the country will make.
Issues of governance are integrated and cannot be implemented on a party platform. It requires deep thinking and analysis.

First i agree that the four year cycle is short and would recommend an amalgamation of the French, British and American systems
French, because i would want a five year term so that performance could give one a 10 year period.
British because i want the parliamentary style of democracy. A parliamentary style ensure inclusiveness of all political parties. Imagine the last election. Akuffo Addo would have been in parliament as leader of the opposition and together with his team contributing to National Development.
American because the presidential style would have to be maintained

Dear Mr K. Ohemeng, the issue I have with the thinking of the likes Kwasi POratt jnr is that they have a tendency of discussing sympthoms rather than the "Problem". The contries you mentioned as examples had leaders who had a "Strategic Vision" of national development and persue it with a vengence within a pseudo undemocratic environments Singapore has been a one-party state for years. S. Korea was a autocratic dictatorship and Malaysia's democracy initially was not a poster child. What was common with these coutries was their leaders fostered an environment and institutions for their citizens to create wealth !
No amount of time can help or allow bunch of myopic politicians to make a difference in their citizen's life !!
Nkrumah for example had a strategy: Education,Akosombo Dam, Tema harbor and Township, Cocoa MB, industrilization (GIHOC)and so on. No Mr Pratt the 4 year cycle is not a problem. If you do not know where you are going you will get somewhere. And that place is NOWHERE!! Importation of Handkerchiefs and catapults is a symptom of a political class who are clueless and seek power only to look the national TREASURY !!!

We need not stupidly copy America and their ways of doing things because they have systems in place that support the way they operate; which we don't have as a developing nation. What Kwesi Pratt has said should not be considered cavalier as many have already done...most readers are saying that America, Great Britain, by the way has five years and other industrialized nations have four years and so we should stick with the four years...
No, we should not follow blindly. If we have to be fair to ourselves, what can a government achieve in four years?...In fact, most serious projects take more than four years to complete! Even in the U.S.,what has Obama achieved?...the economy has not reached its full potential of creating jobs...It took George Bush eight years to stall the economy and it would take more that eight years for America's economy to reach its apogee again...Even former President Kuffour, shared that view recently when he said four years are not enough for any gov't to do anything...
In France, the president is elected for seven years and if re-elected, he would have served for 14 years, which is more than enough for any president to implement his or her developmental policies.
Our greatest leader, Kwame Nkrumah, came out with a seven year development plan and later a five year development plan which did not end before he was overthrown. And so what Pratt has suggested is food for thought and should be looked at seriously. I will suggest that Ghana goes for six years for a presidential term.

At the end of the day the Gov't works only for 2 years bearing in mind that the first year they are still assessing the situation and the 3rd to 4th year they start organising the election.
We should change the constitution for the interest of the country. It's not the matter of the ruling or the opposition parties but of all Ghanaians. The MPs must analyse deeply Pratt's recommendation and decide once and forever.

Four years is four years; no more, no less. During electioneering campaigns, these greedy politicians keep talking about their capabability of doing this and doing that if elected. Once they get to office, they change their tunes. The combination of two terms offered Rawlings and Kuffour 8 years each to perform the miracles they promised under democratic government. If they couldn't deliver, what make us think that additional years in office would have produced the magic?

It makes sense. Why has it work and continues to work in many democratically advanced countries?
The main problem is that most of these political parties of Africa usually do have actionable or executable plans and policies in place to rule and execute by the time they are voted to power. They rather waste all the time searching for the appropriate cabinet members and other government appointees.

We won't allow that to happen. Ex-Prez. J.A. Kuffour too 2 4-yr terms to increase Ghana's economy by 5 fold. Meanwhile Rawlings ahd his AFRC/P-NDC could do anything in almost 20yrs of "buga-buga" and "patapaa" of governance.
Hon. Mr. Kwasi Pratt, please just chill and pray for better days ahead, as we all await Supreme Court verdict. Just wait a while and you'll soon see some great wonders. If it is the will of God, Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia will turn Ghana's economy around so that Ghana will soon be a place to be for all every citizen as well as Africans. Just pray for Nana's victory and see with your eyes, "how it's done!"
May God bless our Homeland Ghana, and may HE give our Noble Justices the wisdom, the courage and the power to give the right verdict for Ghana's advancement. Amen!

4.Most present parliamentarians are in the mode of their 1957 Counterpart.Thinking they are in the august house to support whatever comes from their own and to go against motions from the other side. What they do not know is that as legislators, their utmost responsibility is to the Nation. Therefore, the Citizenry who elected them expect laws which are in the interest of the nation that would and could stand the test of time.
In my experience,I've never seen or heard of anyone who aspire to do electricals(not apprentice wiring of a house)at poly or Uni level but had not knowledge of Physics.
I'm saying this b'cos people who want to be president should have knowledge of government, the 3 arms of govt (executive, legislator, and judiciary) what they stand for and their duties.Governance, the Ministry. What is the job of a minister and that of the principal secretary. You got to have a fairly broad knowledge not only from books, but also by excursions to those departments
before you think of becoming a leader.
The only dept you cannot go is national security.B'cos they ,cannot give security details or tell you the briefs to the president.
So you don't win an Election before you waste time of the peoples business to learn basics. And as a result ask for more years.
If you're serious, you got to have your plans for the nation on paper before you ascend the throne. You don't get on the throne before you think of your development plans
Last but not the least it took Osagyefo Dr KwameNkrumah 8 years to built every thing you can think of in Ghana.
Tema township,harbor,fishing harbor,cargo handling,Tema food complex,Tema oil refinery,valco,GTP textile,Alu wrks Steel wrks,cocoa product,boat yard,medical supplies center,to mention but a few factories.
InAccra Nkrumah built kanda estates,Osu estates,Nyaneba estates,La borne estates, cantoments eststes, old kaneshie estates .mamprobi estates, latebiokoshie estates, roman ridge estates etc etc.He established the CMB,built black star square.Ghana black stars, all the High schools in the entire Country with exception of the mission schools. Built Tech uni, cape coast uni, nautical college, school of mines Tarkwa, nasawam cannery.aborso glassglass factory, etc etc etc etc
Kwesi Pratt and cohorts should know that Ghana is not for a group of people or a particular family. The suggestion is silly and nonsense.Dr Kwame Nkrumah built Ghana.Absolutely no one and I repeat one, would be able to do a fraction of 1%, out what Nkrumah did.
So,you and whoever should stop spewing nonsense.Has any of you heard of a Western nation leader asking for more time for the past 200 years?.Greedy fools.

4 years is just about right. Parties must prepare well for office and hit the ground running. They must have a clear plan for the country to be implemented from the fist day of office.
Better still to have a long-term National plan prepared by the National Development Planning Commission in conjunction with the political parties and civil society. This would be implemented by whichever party is in power.

DEMOCRACY DEFY INTERPRETATION AND THE SO-CALLLED WESTERN DEMOCRACY IS A EUPHEMISM FOR ENTRENCHING THE STATUS QUO OF ARISTOCRATIC POWER AND EXPLOITATION.
CHINA REFUSED TO BE BLESSED WITH THE DOSAGE OF SO-CALLED CAPITALISM AND DEMOCRACY AND NOW THE GREATEST LENDER TO SO-CALLED MOTHER OF DEMOCRACY, US AND OTHER CAPITALIST COUNTRIES.
THE SOVIET UNION FOOLISHLY ADOPTED THE SO-CALLED DEMOCRACY & CAPITALISM AND PAID THE PRICE OF ECONOMIC SHOCK
DEMOCRACY AND CAPITALISM ARE TWIN EVIL BROTHER FOR EMERGING ECONOMIES AND NOT GOOD FOR THE THIRD WORLD.
AFRICA MUST ADAPT AND ADOPT THE CHINESE FORM OF DICTATORSHIP WITH A HUMAN FACE AND GROW FROM THERE TO BECOME CAPITALIST AND DEMOCRATIC.
ASK EVERY AMERICAN OT BRITISH OR GERMAN TO DEFINE DEMOCRACY AND THE ANSWER WOULD BE FREE ELECTION OF THE RICH TO PARLIAMENT TO MAKE LAWS THAT ONLY GOES A LONG WAY TO ENTRENCH THEIR EXPLOITATION OF THE POOR.
IF GHANA'S 4-YEAR ELECTORAL CYCLE IS CHANGED TO 5 YEARS, YOU BET, CORRUPTION WILL BE WORSE THAN NOW.
I WISH I HAVE TIME TO OFFER MORE SUGGESTION TO DEBUNK THE 5-YEAR ELECTORAL CYCLE FANTACY. IT'S A BAD PROPOSITION AT A TIME WHEN CORRUPTION IS VERY HIGH.
HOW MANY YEARS WAS DIRTY RAWLINGS WAS IN POWER, AND WHAT CHANGED. HOW MANY YEARS WAS KUFFOUR IN POWER, AND WHAT CHANGED.
