‘Gov’t is clueless about Ghana’s sick economy’

National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan, has described the John Mahama-led administration as clueless in resuscitating “Ghana’s sick economy”.

According to Abu Ramadan, the economy under the governing NDC has been awful to the extent that the lives of the ordinary people are worsening by the day.

He was reacting to government’s quest to impose a 20% Import Duty on mobile telephone handsets and additional 5% Stabilization Levy on the profit before tax of selected companies and institutions.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) had argued that the proposed tax increments show the economy was in tatters but Finance Minister Seth Terkper disagrees. Mr. Terpker, however, admitted the economy was facing challenges.

Speaking on Asempa Fm’s Ekosii-Sen programme on Friday, Abu Ramadan accused the NDC of failing to render economic accountability to Ghanaians since it assumed power in 2009.

He attributed this to government’s abysmal performance in the handling of the economy it inherited.

“I think these proposed tax increments show the government and its Finance Ministry are clueless about the management of the economy. They told us the economy is robust, not broke yet still taxes are being increased anyhow. So it clearly tells you the government doesn't know what it is doing,” he yelled.

Mr. Ramadan who is also a leading member for pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), called on government to re-orient itself and set priorities right, to stabilize the economy.

“I think the president and his team should put on their thinking cap and work again because how the economy is being handled is unacceptable”.
