I really dont understand the courts. The light and travesty of a sentence of 10 meager days goes to prove what journalists in this country think of themselves.
Our journalists think they are untouchable and therefore they can misconduct themselves as much as they please without fear or favor.
It seems to me that this sentence was reluctantly imposed not to straighten up the journalists concerned but merely to prove to the public that judges are also powerful. Those two scoundrels should have been given at least a year each to put the fear of the Lord in them.

The fact that rulings are often reversed by appeal courts mean judges should not assume they have ALL wisdom in their custody. Citizens reserve the right to disagree with rulings and should be ABLE to express it without fear or favour!!
These judges expecially Mr Atuguba is too egocentric: if Ken Korankye had lied down flat on the floor to kiss his black feet saying, "your lordship"... he would have released him. But because Ken stood his ground and defended his inalienable right, the judges' ego got bruised. Ken will come out from that 10-day incarceration even stronger!!
Nobody is going to take away our freedom of expression!!!

The media have been accused of irresponsible behaviours for so long, its almost as if those behaviours are the norm. Nobody is above the law in this country so lets applaud the justices for their quest to ensure sanity in the system. In any case Ken Kuranchie is not the only media professional who has commented on the proceedings. That the Baako's and Pratts have not been summoned, speak volumes. If this guy would do his job well, than the courts does not have to take those actions!
So mr GJA president, RESTRAIN YOUR MEMBERS OR START PROCEDURE TO TAKE THEIR LICENSES AWAY.
Other thing, Ghana should start putting in place law which does not allow politicians (active) to engange in other businesess specially media. And all politicians should give transparency in funding, memberships, companies..for example in Holland, an active member of parlaiment is not allowed to have a function in the private sector and they even do a good and well check of their relatives (this to combat corruption and using tax payers money for their own benefit).
For real, I believe the real brains of Ghana like me and others are not in Ghana because the current generations in Ghana are not really ready to change and fight for a better developed and prosperus Ghana!

In no civilized and matured legal system can the same body act as judge and jury as happened in these contempt cases. The constitutional principle of separation of powers was meant to avoid the concentration of power in one body so as to protect the liberty and rights of the citizens. Where a court acts as the prosecutor and adjudicator, it destroys this essential tenet of democracy. The court by this action has arrogated to itself the power to censor and punish pronouncements it unilaterally determines to be unfavorable. What happened to our rights of expression and free speech and our right to be tried by a fair and impartial trier of facts? It is sad that the highest court of the land is ignorant of fundamental legal principles of separation of powers and freedom of expression.

Where was the GJA when all this was going on? Did they think they had a "reputation" to protect when a number of their lot started to misbehave? Where were they when Ken Kuranchie told the court he would "only appear if he is served with a written summons"? Where was the GJA when the man went insulting the court during his case??
Perhaps what the GJA president is admitting is that the GJA members have a disciplinary and "reputational" problem which has now been exposed.
My friend, first thing is to keep your house in order, sanction your members who cross the line and demonstrate that you deserve to be taken seriously as a credible union of people. Otherwise, forever hold your peace.

Anybody with even a miniature commonsense will argue that this rulings is vindictive, bias, selective and therefore affront to democracy.
So, if a million Ken Korankyes had expressed their opinions similarly and refused to lie down on the floor at the feet of the judges for "forgiveness", they'd have gotten 10-day sentence each?

Why on earth did Ken Kurankye make claims of various offensive statements made before the final warning of the Judges, and use that as a reason to call the Judges bias? ANY HUMAN BEING WITH BRAINS IN HIS HEAD WILL KNOW HOW STUPID KEN WAS IN MAKING SUCH STATEMENTS. IT MAKES NO SENSE. THE GUY IS JUST BLOCK-HEADED.
If someone made offensive comments after the final warning and the Judges did nothing, it'd have made sense to call them bias.

As a remote observer, I would like to see if Rawlings will be called to the Supreme Court should he hurl insults or criticise them.
Na who fear oga?
In no civilized and matured legal system can the same body act as judge and jury as happened in these contempt cases. The constitutional principle of separation of powers was meant to avoid the concentration of power in one ...

In a piece I culled from the internet which I have posted on another thread, it appears in certain jurisdictions the same judge/s can hear the contempt case.
Sorry, Mr. GJA President but majority of your members are an apology to the inky fraternity. No research, no investigations, they are lazy and stupid and easily resort to phone interviews and are quick and happy to cover semi ...

Is the SC above criticism in Ghana's democracy? Atuguba is bad for Ghana's democracy. He has completely succeeded in undermining the integrity of Ghana's SC. He should be ashamed of doing politics on the bench.

Ken Kuranchie's jailing was as much a result of his reckless publication as of his arrogance before the SC. The GJA needs to educate its members. Ghana needs the GJA, but not as a tool to destabilise Ghana, as Ken Kuranchie a ...

All the "fake journalists" in Ghana need proper proffessional training and education
WE HAVE ONLY GUTTER JOURNALISTS
Why wouldn't it? When some of your members want to have an easy ride to fame in this country by being irresponsible in their reportage.
No sympathy for such" masqueraders"

Is Atubiga the spokesmsn for the NDC or President Mahama? What power has he to enforce what he vowed to do? So what is the "contempt" in what he said? If this goes on, mad people will fill our jails for speaking their mind.
Atubiga who rubbished the legitimacy of the court got 3-days in jail. But Ken Korankye who just expressed his opinion was given 10-day sentence.
Are the judges there to serve their egos or our constitution?
Anybody wi ...
