This people had been advising all our governments at certain periods since independence and we are still where we are. Their prescriptions had not worked any where, India, Pakistan have gone under the same medicine, they are still facing huge problems in regards to development. If the tariffs are increased the demand will decrease to match the supply deficit. Is this what they call development. Its cannibalization for the owners of the electric power..them.. Let us think

I am a bit confused to think that increased tariffs will support increased economic growth. I need to go back to my A'level Economics books!
But what about the fact that:
1) Virgin Air has decided to opt out of Ghana because Ghana's aviation fuel is too expensive?
2) The association of Ghanaian industrialists have expressed their opposition to the proposed tariff increases?
I think the IMF spoke too quickly. They forgot to ask the government to first do a comprehensive alternative service delivery/ competitiveness review of the utilities companies before jumping to a recommendation on tariff increases.
Such a review will identify any inefficiencies which must be addressed prior to/ in addition to any tariff increases.
Arbitrary tariff increases may increase the price of domestically produced goods and services which will in turn make imported goods and services more competitive. Increased reliance on imported goods and services will worsen Ghana's foreign exchange situation, debt repayment and attractiveness to foreign investment.
Please forgive my A'Level Economics if that offends you.

Ghanaians won't have any problems paying increased tariffs once they are paid enough to warrant such increases. How about the jobless, should they be denied electricity, water and telephone services?

The government has implemented a well-crafted propaganda campaign after increasing the prices on fuel earlier this year. (Was there really a subsidy on fuel? Who knows? There is no clear information given on costs and fees.)
The government is laying the ground work to increase the tariffs because they haven't paid their share to ECG and need someone else to bail them out...That's right, businesses and the general public. This article is nothing 'new'. IMF does not believe in having subsidies in the market place for things like fuel and electricity. This, in itself, can be debated. However, it's the government that has placed this article. They want to blame some one else that it's the IMF that is forcing us to increase rates. SHAME. SHAME. SHAME.

The IMF and the World Bank operate on the line of banks. They are concerned with the cashflow of governments which affect their abilities to service their indebtedness to them. Subsidy by governments affect their continous ability to meet their debt obligations to their creditors.
In as much as government must service its debt obligations, citizens should not be overburdened with all kinds of inefficiencies. These utility companies are full of inefficiencies which are passed on to the defenceless consumer. This is what the people are protesting and it makes sense.
Governments have a role to play in this matters because the peoples' interest should always be upheld by those we vote to use our sovereignty. For me if government dont conduct their activities well, we shall show them the exit when the time comes. I will step out to do exactly that. I bet.
