The stupidity of some of those who come here are amazing. We have elderly people allegedly being abused by their caretakers and all that you care about is whether they are Nursing Assistant or R/LPN or BSN. What difference does that make?
Whether a Nursing Assistant(CNA)/Personal Support Worker (PSW) or R/LPN or BSN, no health care worker has the right to intimidate or insult, let alone hit a patient. Under no circumstance should anyone hit anyone under his or her care. Period. This is the first thing you would be told when you decide to work in the health care industry.
Unfortunately, many Africans take it as "JOB" instead of a career or their calling. I have warned many and continue to warn those who want to enter into the industry that it is not all about money and they should be careful. I have met African nurses who have lost everything because of being accused of "harassment." After all their schooling, they have to find another field to work because they are banned to take care of any vulnerable in our society. If you don't have the temperament to work in that field, give it up.
It is alleged, so I hope it stays that way. But why would you do such a thing in front of your trainee? But then again, most Africans are naive.
Even if you are attacked by a psycho/mental patient, you need to remove yourself from that dangerous place and get to a safe place. You don't have to stand there and "defend" yourself; there is nothing like defending myself while standing there and exchanging blows. This is the reason why most healthcare workers are asked to take CRISIS PREVENTION course to know when to stop a crisis or run away from a crisis.
Whatever happens, I hope they learn something from that.

This case brings to the forth the uncaring and lack of compassion among Ghanaian healthcare workers, especially nurses. It's quite disheartening to note that most Ghanaian nurses in Ghana are very rude and don't empathize with the sick who throng to various hospitals in Ghana for health care. You most often witness nurses in Ghana insulting and maltreating helpless patients (especially the poor and illiterate ones) under their care. I've had on many occasions accosted some nurses on my visits to Ghana for the way they handle patients. I hope nurses in Ghana will read this particular case and reform themselves before they fall into a problem of this nature.

Be careful not to be judgmental until all the facts are out and you've heard the full story on both sides. This is inflammatory partial reporting of the facts. Nothing in here was mentioned of the detailed cross examination which has shown the inaccuracies in her stories! Would it surprise you to learn that Akosua was not on duty on the days she claimed to have worked with her and made these so called observations?
Tell me if you will watch a patient being abused over a period of 8wks before you call for help? You do nothing in 8 wks and at the end of your rotation you tell a whole bunch of stories involving patient abuse? In my humble opinion, it sounds like she pieced together stories she had heard from other students and that is wholly unreliable! Why isn't her story corroborated by physical evidence? A patient being slapped about will have purple bruising on the body caucasian patients bruise easily - as any nurse who has been in contact with patients ought to know!
I don't doubt that Africans are loud and brash when speaking - that is more a matter of culture and perception than actual ill treatment or insults.
As an anglosized african, I can picture the scenario where these nurses (who incidentally have been looking after theses patients for a number of years and therefore have a relationship with them) say Akosua for example, in the story highlighted here, may have said what she said in jest - not to insult but a jocular exchange between patient and carer! If you don't know the two have a relatioship in which they make jokes at each other, have a good banter, you might take offence. This student was only a first year student at the time and her first encounter on a ward of this type. It is wholly conceivable that she misinterpreted what she saw.
I am disappointed that the reporter simply stopped short of reporting on the cross examination. Maybe that would have given readers a better perspective of these allegations.
We'll watch with interest to see what cross examination reveals. I know on the first day the student had a tough time on cross - sufficient to raise reasonable doubt about the accuracy of her allegations!
We shouldn't in the heat of partial reporting, make scape goats out of these carers!

Dear Ghanaians back at home,do you know what\,these minor jobs undertaken by some ladies as nursing assistants in Europe is very tedious and needs care, patience and love for the senior patients in these exlusive wards which requires people with natural tallents as ennumerated above but not training as it is normally required.Excuse me to say that, one behaves like a child when old age sets into ones life. The reasons being that, fraustrations, bodily pains, isolations and unsuspected problems come into the life of the affected poor victims who expect a motherly care from these nursing assistants who do not have this natural phinomenon to meet these challenges but only working for their belly. My candid oppinion is that their training should include kinder pedagougy and sychology which may prepare them for the tedious work ahead of them.

In Ghana,we have Laws and we have lawlessness that goes unchecked. When culprits are apprehended, somehow, the evidence gets lost, changed or the offender becomes a member of the NPP and gets set free.
