Look Mr Ga Chief, if you dont claim that land, you are not worth the stool that you sit on. Take back your peoples land and use it sensibly. Lease it to a developer to build a modern mall or a block of modern high rise offices. That way you can make a decent amount of income and use it for community education and the rehabilitation of Gas from the pig-stye standards in Accra central to human standards. They too are human beings and deserve some respect.

Anyway, King Osei Tutu is not my king but what he wanted to do was to prevent the sale of certain lands, prevent land disputes that has plagued some ethnic groups, and finally to prevent the double sale of lands as some unscrupulous sub chiefs were trying to do. Is that not smart? In Accra, even stool lands that are not supposed to be sold have been sold. Then after that, we have problems with responsible Gas who feel such lands should not be sold. The result? Land disputes court cases, land guards and lawlessness. Let us mark it on the wall and give the land to the Ga Chief and see who the new owners of Kantamanto market will be. The Land is LEASABLE to individuals, Corporations or an Institution of the Government, and it should be NOTED, in all cases of TRANSFERS, the Regional authority has the POWER on the Balance Lease, in other words, the portion remaining on the Lease is not TRANSFERABLE without the Offices of the Kingdom. This is a general RULE for all LANDS everywhere!
However, we are not living in the PRIMITIVE era, things have changed; the National Governments have some say, but through the KINGDOM of the Chieftaincy.

There are many families in Accra who have such documents going back to the colonial days. This is the basis of the current law that prohibits outright sale of lands to developers. Developers are forced to lease land for 50 or 99 years. Freehold sales are rare.

I couldn't agree with you more,Tibaa. Our nation needs to take a serious look at this archaic, choke-hold cultural claims to land in Ghana. Many developmental projects have been denied our nation as a direct result of interferences by so called rights-over-land-claims of some chiefs in Ghana. As Tibaa rightfully noted no Ga chief or any other chief in the country, for that matter, was born with land tucked to his placenta(my addition).
Our Government should be able to take any land anywhere in the country after proper compensation for developmental purposes by just invoking the universal law of eminent domain. These stupid lessor laws recognized or rather enforced during Rawlings' tyrannical rule should be discarded by our present government i.e. if our leader has a sterner spine.
Our overdue development cannot be held back any longer by local chiefs who see change as anathema and would rather wallow in filth and stench.Accra needs a face-lift that calls for completely razing most of what constitutes the Ga traditional area.If any chief fails to see that,it's just too bad.We really need to move on and I wish Gas would let go their destructive adherence to antiquated ethnic claims that has stalled development of their surroundings for so long.We need to allow change so we can improve our surroundings to the level expected of civilized people.

There is nothing archaic, antiquated, or obstructionist to the development of Ghana regarding the rightful claim to certain parcels of land by royal families. The royal families are custodians of the land - the land is a communitarian asset that belongs to the entire people of the traditional area. In the US there are protected Indian Reservation lands, and in Europe all royally-owned land is also respected.
In the last 2 decades, successive governments have robbed traditional areas of their lands. Lands that were acquired for development projects have all been privatized together with whatever assets that the taxpayer's money was used to acquire. Tell me, Mr Okunka, whether any traditional authorities were compensated for the lands they released (without compensation) to the 1st government of Ghana? All the state-owned hotels (built with taxpayer money) and the royal lands they sit on are in private hands now. All the state owned-factories (built - once again - with taxpayer money) and lands released by traditional rulers have been privatized without a single pesewa of compensation to the traditional rulers. I am sorry but this is called LOOTING.

My problem is that if that place is not a designated market-place then the traders should be told in plain language that in the 21st century, you cannot have a market in a train station.
Those stone-age people pretending to be officials of the defunct Ghana Railways Corporation, should also be told that in civilized society, railway men dont lease land - especially if that land does not belong to them. Simple and short. We must try and make a start towards some kind of order and discipline in this country. There is too much chaos and disorder everywhere.

Naturally as long as there is law, it is always good to apply it even if people are angered by it. I believe the chief in question is saying something factual pertaining to the signed documents of the land.
There are few reasons of interest that have angered many of you that are commenting on this land in question. The reasons are;- Personal hatred for the said chief, general hatred for the Gas, the inferriority complex, psychological fear and the reality of leasehold of the Ga lands, etc
The first question is which wrong has that Chief done against you, that you feel very bitter about him in particular and the Gas as a whole? This is your demonstration of the hidden hatred, which even has taken some of you far to attack the Gas in all areas of their existence, which in a way prove your jealousy in many areas. The real issue is basically about legality,- what the law says about that piece of land.
What surprised me most is your lack of intelligence about leasehold matters or rather your jealousy and hidden hatred that has stolen your knowledge about simple issues of this nature. Further to help you, a good reference was made clearer to you of the year of the leaseold, that is in 1908.
Meanwhile it is unfortunate that Ghana has reached a very sad stage in our history, that people have failed to realise the truth of things and had shifted everything to tribal sentiments and myopic reasonings in the area of party politics which is detrimental to our national developments, a behaviour, that every Ghanaian has been overtaken and possesed by this demonic spirit of retrogression. Eventually Ghanaians only talk about the type of 4x4 vehicles they have and the building they have built. Unfortunately and in reality, their hearts are far away from seeing Ghana good.
We have even forgotten that our nation needs unity to work together in achieving our aims of improving the standard of our lives. What a pity, I believe the heavens will come to open our closed minds in order to enable us see ourselves as one people who are desiring to attain develpoment which lies in our hands, and not in the hands of the whitemen
For it is said that the destiny of people, is in their hands, and therefore it is our obligational duty to take a good look of ourselves in whatever we do and say, since that could derail our desired loved destiny of seeing our nation as one of the developed economies.
Many of you who do business in Accra have been involving yourselves in leasehold issues, and if so why feel so bitter about a clear point of this.

How would ghana progress in development when we have chiefs whose main aim is to impede any action to build and beautify Accra the city that he claims to be a chief? We always say ghana is the gateway to west africa in terms of businesses, tourism, education, conferences, air transport, football, democracy and freedom and many more yet the city ACCRA and other regional capitals do have many problems,Accra needs modern mass mode transport system that can cope with the peak times demand for transport services without compromising on the environmental pollution and congestion
. We also need modern transport infrastructure such as rail and bus terminalsto intergrate seemlessly with all the transport modes such as the air, marine, rail and the road . I also the development of both ODAW and KOLE cannals and their banks will boost tourism and water spots on these great waters,If canaary wharf in LONDON have been developed into tourism site, financial hub, residential apartments with shops and an intergrated transport system why cant we do the same in ACCRA and proof to the cheifs that ghanaians are capable when given the chance or in no time the slogan that ghana is the gate way to west africa will be lost to IVORY COAST because the ivorians know how to develope and modernise their cities.

Dear BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
There are no chiefs per se in London, but local opposition and interested parties (did you hear about the STOP THE CANARY WHALF PROTESTERS agitations in the 1980s?), environmental activists do frustrate development projects in London. You may not be aware how long it took the planning permission for the Canary Wharf project to be obtained before the project took off to come to shape. I admit that it is a beautiful place. I live in one of the flats in the wharf and work at the Wharf. So before you condemn the Chiefs in Ghana for standing up to the rights of the people, please take a historical perspective.
What the Chiefs are intending to do is to allow due process with regards to legality and good process to proceed and nothing else. When these are established others can follow.
When that is settled others can proceed. No chief in Ghana will be an obstacle to genuine business development projects. However, I am convinced some will oppose those so-called INVESTORS whose interests are far beyond the interests of Ghanaians. They are there to siphon what they can get and get out as soon as possible.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT have processes to go through.

I may not like to abuse you just like you are abusing me the Ga man. I can see that you are lazier than me if not you should not have deviated from the real topic. Your laziness never allow you to understand what you read.
The Ga people have to remain in family houses. It is better than being in the bush, where the wild animals are and Eja Koo and Amakye Dede entertain you with concert music. The Gas live in the Capital, and if they alone develop every place, then where will you who came from the bush be. They love you Mami Efua because they want you too to feel that you are part of them in the capital. Don't you like that? WHy then abusing them as lazy people, is it jealousy or hatred?
The Gas are not claiming what never belong to them. There is paper/ document on what the chief is saying. Mami Efua if you have land in your village, and the village community asked you to give them your land for use for ten years and you agreed b'cos you want the best for the village. I think after the said ten years you have right to claim your land that you gave them. In that situation, if you want your land can people be angry with you and call you EFUA LAZY? I think no, ofcourse no because it is your land whether they say you live in family houses or not it is yours period.
I want to teach a way of life, in reference to your understanding/ belief that others come to develop and built the city. One thing that you those who hailed from the villages refuse to know and understand about the Gas is that we do not boast of things that we have like you do because of your village oriented low mentality. Why should we boast of what we have, when what we have is already for us.
When LEGON university was under Vice chancellor Kwadwo Okyere Asenso and they were giving degress to their familes who never sat for exams and disgrace came upon the varsity, who did Kufour find honest among many and called him to come and bring things under control? Is it not the Ga man Prof. Nii Boye Tagoe and Atta Mills also saw the intelligence and faithfulness of the present one called Prof. Earnest Aryeetey, also a Ga man. How come Ga people are lazy, my sister Efua?
Apart from our old Accra areas, where in the newly develop areas that you can you tell me that Ga people are not part of those developed areas? Or do you expect us to shout and tell the whole Ghana what we have done? If Ga people are boastful, then to start with they should have made much noise about the achievement of Ghana's independence, with references to Seagent Adjetey, Seagent Odartey Lamptey and Seagent Attipoe. These are brave Ga men and an Ewe who faced the whiteman and demanded the Independence that Ghana enjoys today.
Do you know them or have you heard of them before, I guess u have not heard of them b'cos we do not boast. That is the typical nature of a Ga man.

Storming into his lawyer's office, a Texas oil magnate demanded
that divorce proceedings begin at once against his young bride.
"What's the problem?"
"I want to hit that adulterin' bitch for breach of contract,"
snapped the oil man.
"I don't know if that will fly," said the lawyer. "I mean your
wife isn't a piece of property; you don't own her!"
"Damn right," the tycoon rejoined, "but I sure as hell expect
exclusive drillin' rights!
WE HOPE THAT ONE DAY THE CHIEFS IN CAPE THREE POINTS WESTERN REGION WILL NOT COME AND SAY THAT THEY OWN THE OIL FIELDS.
IF THE KANTAMANTO MARKET DID NOT BURN DOWN,WILL THEY SAY THEY OWN THE LAND?
ALL THE CHIEFS ARE GREEDY BASTARDS AND OPPORTUNIST.

Wake up my people. It rained whilst you were fast asleep. Now you can see that it is wet so you must wake up! No more infightings and backbiting. You need to unite and every deal/any deal with the government or whoever must be done legally and properly. No freehold sales of land only lease sales. All negotiations with the authorities to acquire Ga land for public/community utility must demand a good royalty and supervision. Enough of selling land for 'domedo' or 'tolo beef'. Wake up and be alert on your property and heritage otherwise, Ga would be legally taken over by the outsiders.

Just send those tribalistic and bushpeople who call themselves traders at Kantamanto back to the forest so that Accra and Ghana as a whole will be peaceful. All what these people know is the NPP economics; importing and selling or buying and selling. Ghana cannot develop through buying and selling. Production and building of industries is what it takes to develop a country. Just demolish the whole Kantamanto market.
