As the writer wrote, the GMA is holding Ghanaians to ransom. Nartey, this is not unfortunately about victory. The point is the number of lives we are losing each day due to this strike.
Our health system is under equipped and understaffed and doctors going on strike over stretches the over burdened hospitals. The result is, patients sicknesses will worsen and many more will and are dying because of this strike.
No matter what doctors grievances are, they should remember that they swore oath to protect or save human lives. I do not think they took this oath on condition that their entitlements are fully paid. It is not helpful that government handed out huge sums of money to mps for accommodation and for serving parliament but the strike is now way too long to be acceptable.
We need police or military hospitals in all the regions to help in the future in such situation.
GMA should think it over again because I believe they are losing their popularity with Ghanaians.
They should also consider whether GMA leadership is destroying their reputation or improving it.

You folks should shed that old fashion Ghanaian mentality of always proving the challenger wrong instead of the perpetrator. The government is rather using Ghanaians as pawns for its mischievous end. They have deliberately thrown politics into this to confuse Ghanaians.
Cosmetic solutions are always temporary. Forcing people to swallow their grievances will not help them work will clear conscience. It's time Ghanaians eschew this mentality of defending perpetrators to seek peace. Cosmetic solutions are always likely to pop up problems over and over again.

What happened to the oath doctors swore? I am questioning the responsibility of doctors to Ghanaians and would not wade into the politics of GMA and Ghana government.

At the moment, many Ghanaians have died because of this strike. The big question is, should the lives of Ghanaians be sacrificed in order to receive their arrears. The question for us all here is, what is the right thing to be done in this situation by the doctors. I do not believe in this elitism, learned and knowing stuff especially if such qualities bring forth decisions that kill Ghanaians.
Please keep the president, EC and errors stuff out of this as you may not have a single proof.

Firstly doctors are not on strike to demand full payment of allowances. They have accepted the instalments payments gov't proposed. They are now fighting against reduced pensions and restoration of conversion difference, and with that they only need a written commitment from government.
Secondly, by the same labour laws, it is ILLEGAL for workers to be worse off in a new salary scheme. Reduced pension contributions is therefore illegal. I don't know why u ignored this ILLEGALITY in your article.
Thirdly, if you are classifying doctors as essential service providers, why are u not mentioning why it has taken more than 1 year to address their concerns. Or don't u know that by your same labour laws, concerns of Essential service providers should be addressed within TWO (2) WEEKS? Or is it not also a breach of the law? Or people are only termed 'essential service' providers when they go on strike, but when they at work, NOTHING should be done about their grievances. Is it fair?
Please get the facts right and be fair in your articles. You could also appeal to government to resolve the issues. This painting of drs black in the name of essential service providers has not, and will not work.
Thank you.

Its the poorly funded health system and poor doctor to patient ratio that causes so much havoc.
As for pay they are all humans and have families to feed and themselves to fend for so no one should cheat and get ex gratia and back pay from 2010 and complain that doctors have it from 2012..... You see the unfairness in all this?
Give the workers what is due them!!!Call them essential service then treat them as essential part of the public- and dont go saying we are all the same etc etc.... hypocrites!!!

Why do people always bring up this medical oath thing? So because of the Medical oath, drs should sacrifice and sweat and toil and when gov't is refusing it's duty to give us our due, we should just sit down and keep killing ourselves, and retire from our service and have virtually nothing to show for it, ALL IN THE NAME OF THE MEDICAL OATH??
And what is worse, Ghanaians will never appreciate the kind of sacrifice we do but will rather descend on us in the least opportunity? Or are drs supposed be robots who only understand the medical oath?
Please, drs sacrifice enough, believe me, even as we are on strike, I'm working in a Mission hosp and we haven't joined the strike yet. On Friday, I worked for almost 24 hrs nonstop, I performed about 5 sugeries and saw numerous patients. Yet no one will ever commend such sacrifice and rather support gov't when it fails to give us the little we deserve. We don't even have conditions of service, working conditions are appalling, yet we do more than human abilities to save lives and relieve suffering. Yet, becos of some so called medical oath, gov't will always drag it's feet when it is time to give us what we deserve legally. WE ARE NOT EVEN ASKING FOR ANYTHING NEW, OR AN INCREASE IN SALARIES.
I am seen as a robot who is under oath and so I have to sweat myself to work and when I demand what is rightfully and legally mine, all I get is insults? Is this fair??

Dr Eva, you have conceded that GMA has rubbished the hippocratic oath. One of the many lines in the oat is:
"That I will not withdraw from my patients in their time of need."
Another line states that:
That I will maintain this sacred trust, holding myself far aloof from wrong, from
corrupting, from the tempting of others to vice;
All Ghanaian doctors who are taking part in this strike have therefore broken the oath. Where else in the world have you heard this sort of strike. If you swore the oath and you are breaking it then you know you are wrong.
I am sure doctors in the international community would condemn you. If any doctor participating in this strike tries to apply for job out there in the developed countries and you are found to have participated in this strike, you will not get the medical job. You know that don't you.
A doctor's life is governed by the oath and not financial or future statuses of doctors. If you take the oath, you have to honour it. It is so wrong to let people die for the sake of agreement.
You are talking about rightful money due you? Is this more important than the lives of your patients which you swore to take care of? Shame to GMA. You could lobby the government through all the establishments in Ghana; the Christian council, house of chiefs and all the other big bodies. But instead, you would rather see your brothers and sister die.

What people do not know is that, public sector drs can simply decide to go into private practice or leave the country for greener pastures. But in that case, who will attend to patients in the district hosps where there are no alternative private hosps? Private practice is lucrative and remember, no one can prevent drs from going into private practice, but some of us just want to serve, so this struggle is actually one to protect the future, and keep attracting drs to the public sector.
Rather than condemning drs for allowing innocent citizens to die, u shd rather blame gov't for failing to do it's work of protecting lives of the citizenry by properly remunerating drs who work in public sector hospitals. The hospitals are for gov't, when we work the profit goes to gov't Most of the bills u pay goes to gov't, only a tiny fraction is paid to drs. We also pay tax ( drs inclusive) so it is the duty of gov't to do it's work well and not renege on it's promises. If people die bcos of strikes, u shd rather blame gov't for failing to resolve the issues of the strike.
If company workers go on strike bcos of poor pay and productivity reduces, u don't blame the workers but the management for failing to improve pay.

These so-called doctors who are supposed to save lifes are now indirectly or directly killing their patients. All in the name of MONEY. Shameful and Disgrace Doctors indeed!
