All parties involved know that Ghana as a nation is already paying a high price for whatever might have gone wrong before, during and after the 2012 Election. I personally think that allowing the Rule of Law instead of street violence to work is not an option but a must for our democratic developement.
At the end of the day, nothing should be swept under the carpet, but rather the real perpetrators of injustice should be exposed!
Whatever price we might ever pay for this whole process is definately far less than most other established democracies had to pay. Think about the French revolution for example...

A monkey one day managed to break free from the laboratory where he had been born and brought up.
As he scurried away from the fencing of the compound, he felt grass under his little feet and saw the dawn breaking for the first time in his life.
"Wow, this is great," he thought. It wasn't long before he came to a hedge and after squeezing under it he saw a wonderful sight.
Lots of other monkeys, all free and nibbling on bananas. "Hey," he called. "I'm a monkey from the laboratory and I've just escaped.
Are you wild monkeys?" "Yes. Come and join us," they cried.
Our friend trotted over to them and started eating the bananas. It tasted so good. "What else do you wild monkeys do?" he asked. "Well," one of them said. "You see that field there? It's got carrots growing in it. We dig them up and eat them." This, he couldn't resist and he spent the next hour eating the most succulent carrots. They were wonderful.
Later, he asked them again, "What else do you do?" "You see that tree there? It's got papayas growing in it. We eat that as well." The papayas tasted just as good and he returned a while later completely full. "It's fantastic out here in the world" he told them. "So are you going to live with us then?" one of them asked. "I'm sorry, I had a great time but I can't." The wild monkeys all stared at him, a bit surprised. "Why? We thought you liked it here." "I do," our friend replied. "But I must get back to the lab. I'm dying for a cigarette."

I am beginning to blame the Supreme court for dragging the case this far.
To me, common sense must prevail on the side of the supreme court by now to enable the country move forward.
It would be difficult to unseat Mahama at this time especially when EC and International observers who have over the years been very pragmatic in overseeing our elections. To buttress doubts, the Supper Powers and other countries have congratulated the winner (Mahama) and ready to do business with him.
What the SC must focus on now is to look into possible irregularities and come out with laudable solutions and also amend the law to make it more sensible.
If the SC make a misjudgement and blame the EC and foreign observers, trust me this will impact negatively on the country for years to come and even make it difficult for international observers to participate in our future elections which will further even exacerbate issues.
People like Kennedy Agyapong and Owusu Afriyie must by now be dealt with, done and finished by the courts to prevent others from doing what ever nonsense they keep doing.
The Press must also be regulated as most of the media are under performing and only inciting tensions all over the country.
Our democracy must not be based on the Western style since we are no where near that. Even the UK is seeking to have the EU laws amended especially on human rights to allow them to do their own thing. How on earth, do they even have the guts to prescribe gay rights for us. The same UK are in the process of ratifying laws regarding the press, how on earth is Ghana planning to give freedom to the press? If it is that straight forward previous leaders would have endorsed it long ago.
A stark warning to the current President if he follows that path Ghana will turn upside down for we are no where near that level yet.
God bless Ghana and long live Ghana.

We should take our laws seriously. If the law sets out a procedure for conducting elections that procedure should not in anyway be varied. We should go strictly by what the law says. There is a law in Germany, where I currently live, against public officers accepting gifts from clients. That law recently caused the resignation of President Wolf for accepting a businessmans gift of 3 (three) nights hotel bill for the president. Because it was not clear why the businessman paid the hotel bill for the president, he was forced to resign but that is not the end of the story. There is still a possibility that the ex president will be put before court. Compare that to allowing election fraud to occur. If the case in the supreme court goes against the EC the president will have to give up his position according to the law. I do not see any reason for division or strife afterwards, as some fear. Abiding by the law should be the normal thing in a democracy, so let us take our laws serious.

The CeDi-Africa statement is pregnant with political inclinations. The tilt is very obvious and needs no rocket scientist to prescribe an answer.
Their apprehension is very welcome but the reality is, we should as people be ready to go through this transition than to allow it to fester. To put it bluntly, Prejudice targets people of who differ from yourself in religion, ethnicity, gender, politics or sexual preference. It is the act of judging without evidence and is based on a preconceived notion. On an individual level, prejudice damages relationships. On a large scale, it causes dissension and leads to distrust. However, it can be overcome, one person at a time.
The populace must not be gagged to accept what is wrong because of political expediency. The overriding significance of Democracy is true "Liberty". Our motto is clear on this, "Freedom and Justice". Without these ingredients there can be no "Peace". As a Nation we must be ready to bite the bullet. At the end of the day the dust will settle. Our governance to a large extent had revolved on acrimonious over the years therefore what will happen would be nothing new.
I thought the CeDi-Africa would have given a direction on how to resolve impasses but not to accuse the Petitioners
Though the CeDi-Africa concerns seems logical it is pregnant with political undertones.

I read the report of CeDI with grave concern. We outside Ghana share the same view and are following the court proceedings. It is true that we have to learn to put aside our self interest and help to develop Ghana collectively. I therefore admonish NPP to reconsider their stand, reorganise for 2016 elections. Ghana must exist to need a ruler; partisanship is destroying our motherland. Let us all look back and take advice; let us all consider and brood over the same words in our national anthem that sing and sing since our youth and rise up to the challenge. Name-calling and the blame game seems to have occupied our daily thinking. Long Live Ghana!

This is so because the electorate is majority illiterate! I am surprised these guys did not see it fit to find a solution to the problem. Why has everyone got their heads stuck in the sands? Do they not know or have they never heard about Devolution and Autonomy?
Multi-Party politics will Never Work in a multi-tribal/language settings, NEVER! You all consider yourselves to be educated and you cannot see where the problem is. Have you read what has been happening in the UK, the father of your multi-party central governance system?
Scotland has asked for FULL INDEPENDENCE! You guys MUST retract your heads from the sands and look towards the system in the USA to avoid such situations in the future; a waste of money for a developing country.
Our democracy is is one of Tribes and how deep the pocket is. Until we get to the stage where universal participation was introduced, we should either have One Party system or Regional Autonomy, to let each Region decide what they want to do. Be part of a United Ghana or go their separate way like Sudan just did!
Shine Your Eyes Mama Africa. Multi-party system will NEVER work in multi-tribal, multi-lingual settings!
What do you want? Regional Autonomy or Secession?

What is collapsing Ghana is the lack of truth on the part of those who should know better, but don't want to rock the boat and create a false sense of heaven on earth in present day Ghana. In a country where our institutions are easily corrupted by politicians, and also by some of the citizenry, the putrified rot in the system, would have to be done away with to ensure some measure of progress. Does the election petition case seek to do that with the electoral commission as an institution, the final adjudication of the matter would be a very important yardstick to mesure that. Ghana needs this case and we commend the non violent way this case has been proceeding. Our institutuions should truely represent the aspirations, visions and hopes of the masses working in tandem with politicians to create a free, prosperous and just society for all, and not to serve the whims and caprices of a political establishment which would want to act with impunity and stampede the very processes which these institutions have been set up to perform. On the contrary, this case would ensure that, the electoral commission truely represents the mandate and will of the masses. Needless to say that, in a democracy, this is sacrosanct and not subject to debate.

I agree with your article well written. I think Ghana is living beyond her means by spending the resources being used in the petition. Money used in this litigation can be used to educate the electorate on the type of "democracy" that can benefit most Ghanaians and not just some few.

Multi-party politics should make Ghana a better place, not tear her apart'In Africa and especially in Ghana it has proved to be the opposite. What we see in Africa and Ghana is the replacement of politics with 'Tribalitics' with every tribe jostling for political power.Truly Ghana will never recover from the electon petition to be strong and united. Will the NDC accept the presidency of Akuffo-Addo?Never!!The election petition is a very bad precedent and it is going to weaken the nation economically and politically unless either the NDC or the NPP is not in power.Party politics has so far provec to be a curse for Africa and Ghana is no exception.
