In any case, Nana Addo doesn't have to produce his certificate to prove that he is a lawyer. Perhaps, like Raymond Archer, Justice Kpegah chanced upon a report of Nana's lost certificate and sensed an opportunity to do mischief. But certified copies of certificates can always be obtained from the granting institution. You guys should wait. Kpegah will be embarrassed.

Nothing is wrong with anyone declaring that the certificate qualifying him and allows him to practise law in Ghana, until you begin to understand that as a lawyer that he declares himself to be, such declarations should follow the due procedure, and NOT when Nana Konadu starts the heat on him Nana Addo.

This clearly leaves us doubts and in the dark about when exactly the certificate got lost.

Reread the article and take the sworn veil from your eyes.

You see, I don't care whether or not he was called to the Bar, or whether or not he has any certificate. The question is, should he have been an Attorney General when nothing qualifies him to? Could he practise law in Ghana. Did he at all attend any law school? So, who is Nana Addo Danquah/Dankwa Akufo Addo?

If Nana could obtain copies of certificates, he could have done so very swiftly before declaring his qualifying certificate is missing as it will give him a little credibility in the eyes of Ghanaians supporting him.

You see, I use to like him until he left of the hook those old ladies caught with cocaine at the airport when he Nana was Attorney General. He has not responded to that accusation.

On your article last saturday, I posted that I have some correspondences which is almost like a time bomb on AK. I was challenged by one DKB to the extent that he called me unintellident.
I have sat on this information over the last three years not knowing what to do with them.If I am to release them now it will add a new dimension to this AK saga. When AK left Oxford, he settled in South London and there most of the bad things about AK took place. He had close friends at the time. I have laid hands on the documents after his friends demise. I must say reading them is not palatable. Can we kill someone twice?

I hate wasting my time debating unintelligent people. But if we all decide to leave the forum, fools like you might consider themselves wise (you're already call yourself "Wiseman"!).

Now, let's apply logical reasoning to your own cited statement above.

First, let's accept on the face value that it is true that Nana Addo was prompted by Konadu's accusation to report his missing certificate and obtain an official letter covering the same. The question is there anything legally wrong for him to have done so unless you can prove that, in fact, he didn't even have the certificate in the first place and therefore the letter from the General Legal Council is legal or fraudulent?

Second, it is obvious that many of you have access to the Internet but are unable to do research for yourselves, thereby accepting anything you read from newspapers as gospel truth. Just a minute of research would have told you that Raymond Archer was being mischievous when he claimed that Nana Addo procured the letter from the General Legal Council in response to Konadu's accusations. The latter accusation was made in July 2008, eight clear months after the General Legal Council issued the letter. If anything, it is the Kpegah and NDC propagandists who are using the reported loss of Nana's certificate to do mischief. It's obvious this is one of the basis of Kpegah's claims. But it's baseless because the institution that issued the qualifying and enrolment certificates can always provide certified copies. However, the originals cannot be issued out again. I can see another round of ignorant comments arising on this latter fact when Nana is pushed to obtain certified copies of his certificates.

What is being insinuated - the underlying assertion is that he dodged the entire process prior to being called to the Ghana Bar because he has never being a lawyer since being a lawyer needs a law degree. Clearly Nana has friends who for ages doubt his claims of being a lawyer.

In his place, in his subtle stature, his caliber, this case wouldn’t even have surfaced the way it does because manifestly he didn’t do well his homework. After all, he nurtured his political ambitions for years and should have anticipated on the changes and challenges of the office he beats his sides to assume.

I affirm I don’t hate him; they are now asking for his qualifying certificate, he should produce it. I don’t know where this article is coming from but I think “I have lost my certificate” will be untenable, even before his staunch supporters. I am just being fairly objective.

Do I make sense? If I don't try hard to help him find the missing docs else even his supporters will no longer find him serious. I have begun to sense distrust among some whose posts clearly depict frustration.

The Lens: How Akufo-Addo worsened Ghana's drug problem

Frank Benneh, the drug addict and former Career Diplomat in Geneva during the time of the NDC, owes his current freedom to one man- Nana Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate of the NPP.

Nana Akufo-Addo, who himself continues to battle against pervasive allegations that he is addicted to some hard drugs, did the nation a great disservice by deciding to discontinue without any reason the prosecution of Frank Benneh when the NPP took the reins of power in 2001 with the case still pending.

Frank Benneh, was in 1996 accused of dealing in drugs while in Geneva, Switzerland. The Drug hating NDC government ensured that, in line with diplomatic conventions, he was flown to Ghana and made to face the full rigors of the law. On Tuesday, 9th November 1999, an Accra Regional Tribunal ruled that a "prima facie" case had been established by the prosecution against Frank Benneh, who was facing trial on five counts of dealing in narcotic drugs. The Tribunal, chaired by Mr Justice Wright Mensah therefore, called on Benneh to open his defence on November 25, 1999.

On Tuesday, December 14, 1999 Frank Benneh opened his defence; his defense Attorney, was an NPP strongman and close political ally of Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr Ray Kakraba-Quarshie.

Eventually, the prosecution led by then deputy Attorney General, Martin Amidu, advanced compelling arguments that convinced the regional tribunal to convict and sentence Frank Benneh to 20 years in prison. But his legal counsel, Kakraba Quarshie managed to argue for him to be granted bail.

Mr Martin Amidu has since explained that the NDC government, in spite of that legal setback, continued to press for the case to reach the logical conclusion but time ran out when the NDC had to leave office in 2000 after losing the elections.

Speaking on Radio Gold in September 2006, following an earlier interview granted to The Chronicle newspaper in reaction to deliberate untruths peddled by Nana Ohene Ntow, Martin Amidu stated emphatically that the government of the NDC ensured that Frank Benneh was prosecuted and convicted for dealing in narcotic drugs.

According to Mr Martin Amidu, it was rather the NPP who upon coming into office discontinued the case against Frank Benneh.

“Why was the case not listed for hearing under Chief Justice Wiredu? Why was the case not listed in under Justice Acquah? It could not have been listed in Chief Justice Abban’s Court because the records of appeal were not ready at the time the NDC left office,” he queried.

The Frank Benneh debacle unfortunately was not the only instance of early NPP signal that it had no intention to carry on the fierce battle that the NDC had waged against drugs. Under the tenure of the same Akufo-Addo as Attorney General, three NPP women executives who were in February 2002 nabbed at the Kotoka Airport attempting to traffic narcotics drugs out of Ghana, also saw their case mysteriously terminated.

It will be recalled that a Daily Graphic report of Tuesday 12th February, mentioned that Abena Foriwaa, Chairperson, Comfort Akua Amankwaa, Organiser and Ama Nyarkoa, Treasurer, all of the Dzorwulu NPP, women’s wing were busted for dealing in narcotic drugs.

Under Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure, what amounted to a deliberate attempt was made to completely obliterate all traces of that case. Ghanaians who followed the case closely continue to demand of Akufo-Addo to provide answers to the following critical questions:

Who instructed DCP Felix Abayateye to write a letter to the Narcotic Control Board demanding the docket on those three women?

Was the docket released and if so, why can the docket be traced?

Why have the women so far not been prosecuted? Who authorised the granting of the bail? Who stood surety for the bail? Who facilitated the escape of the women from Ghana? Has the bail bond been estreated? And if not, why?

NPP parliamentary aspirant Nana Kofi Coomson did state that Ghanaians cannot feel safe under an Akufo-Addo presidency. “I cannot close my eyes if the man is president of Ghana,” he stated ominously.

On the evidence of how Nana Akufo-Addo, as Attorney General, killed the fight against narcotics drugs and virtually opened the floodgates that have seen Ghana become a haven for drug barons and the cocaine hub of the continent, one cannot help but concur with the NPP parliamentary aspirant, Kofi Coomson.

Ghana certainly is not safe under an Akufo-Addo presidency.

At this point, although everyone has somebody that he loves, I can understand the people defending Akuffo Addo on every point, but I may pray them to pause a little for the sake of Ghana and be wise in their judgement, as our nation's development and progress is what is at stake now. Can we allow wrong people to lead us?. Yes we can when we do not know. And what about we heard and we are about to know more. Wisdom in decision making matters at present. It is time that we all do our best to straighten things inorder that we shall move our nation forward.

With this situation one clearly will say that Nana Kofi Coomson's words had already judged Nana Addo. What a shame with the part they played with the drug issue. And they used God's words: THE BATTLE IS THE LORD'S

Why Akufo-Addo Should Not Take This Huge Gamble!
I first saw Nana Akufo-Addo one sunny afternoon in May 1996 at the U.S. Embassy in Accra. Outfitted in a simple batik shirt and a pair of beige slacks, Nana Akufo-Addo was at the Embassy to conduct official business on behalf of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the latter the main opposition party in the country at the time. I had gone to the U.S. Embassy that day to attend an interview that was part of requirements by the U.S. Department of State for the issuance of my Diversity Lottery Visa. While I did not speak directly to Nana Akufo-Addo, a few of his party’s stalwarts who recognized him did, and Akufo-Addo graciously acknowledged them. Notably, Akufo-Addo’s mannerisms and poise conveyed to the keen observer that the man was destined to become a major player someday in Ghana’s sociopolitical advancement. With a gratifying capacity to both speak the English language with unmistakable lucidity and woo onlookers with his foreign twang, Nana Akufo-Addo today is on the verge of achieving his greatest political dream, with about a fifty-percent chance to become Ghana’s third democratically elected leader in the Fourth Republic.

Back in 1988, I witnessed an attack on a middle-aged man by three younger men (they probably were in their mid-twenties at the time), one of whom had accused the older man of seducing his wife. But for the middle-aged man’s wittiness, sagacity and quick thinking to aggressively deny the allegations being purveyed by his accusers ? the former had given proof of his whereabouts on the said day that the seduction purportedly took place! ? he would have been beaten to a pulp, or even murdered, via instance justice, Ghana-style. Even with his ostensibly placatory explanation, the three hooligans inflicted a scratch or two on this middle-aged man, perhaps to serve as a reminder of how much damage a rumor alone could inflict, even while an absolving statement was in the offing!

With the preceding allegory in mind, the recent allegations of records-embellishment hurled at Nana Akufo-Addo by Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of former Ghanaian strongman, Jerry John Rawlings, should not be trivialized by the Akufo-Addo camp. Most Ghanaians were truly dumbstruck by that July 9, 2008, news item ? seen on Ghanaweb.com and other pro-Ghanaian Internet portals and titled “Akufo-Addo is not a Lawyer” ? attributed to Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. In the aforesaid piece, Nana Konadu wrathfully enunciated “gaps” in Nana Akufo-Addo’s educational qualifications and professional achievements: Nana Konadu claimed [that] “she had enough evidence to prove that the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and flag-bearer of the ruling National Patriotic Party is not a Lawyer after all, contrary to what his curriculum vitae beams with.” What a serious accusation!

Then on July 10, 2008, Nii Osah Mills, the current President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), in a forceful rejoinder to Nana Konadu’s allegations, “confirmed that the New Patriotic Party flag-bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo[,] and President Kufuor are qualified Lawyers registered with the Association.” But what I thought was particularly interesting about Nii Osah Mills’ remarks was the following statement: “[Nana Akufo-Addo’s and John Kufuor’s] qualification to the Bar was based on the pertaining requirement needed to be admitted to the bar at their time since the requirements varies (sic) as time goes” (Ghanaweb.com). Nii Osah Mills further expatiated that one ought not to have a first degree in law to qualify as a lawyer in Ghana. Nii Osah Mills then added that an individual with “a first degree in any discipline could go to the Ghana Law School in Accra, and after completion could be called to the bar.”

Well, the preceding explanations by Nii Osah Mills were unarguably correct, except that the real issue Nana Konadu had spoken about on July 9, 2008 ? how Nana Akufo-Addo became qualified to practice law in Ghana ? was not addressed by the GBA boss. The question thus remains: If, indeed, Nana Akufo-Addo was admitted to the Ghana Bar Association in 1975, with enrollment number 1190, under what category was his admission to the Ghana Bar Association classified? Was it under the classification whereby any lay person could simply sit and pass an examination administered by the Ghana Bar Association and then is admitted to the bar? Was it under the classification whereby someone with a first degree in, say, Geography or Political Science, could also just take and pass a Ghana Bar Association-administered examination and then is allowed to practice law in Ghana? Or was it under the classification of someone who obtained a law degree from an accredited law school, who then took and passed the Ghana Bar Association-administered examination?

I believe it is this lack of clarity on the part of Nana Akufo-Addo ? and the Ghana Bar Association that has come out to vehemently defend him ? that is making this story remain a front-page news item! Ghanaians simply need to know the truth, as Akufo-Addo, because of his desire to lead the nation, cannot hide under any privacy laws and just wish the matter away! It is a political matter and not a legal one! And to anyone who says that Akufo-Addo will produce the evidence when compelled by a properly constituted court of law, my question is this: Are these judges going to get Akufo-Addo the votes he needs to become president? Will the votes not come from the Ghanaian electorate?

And to further stoke the embers of confusion in the Akufo-Addo-is-not-a-qualified-lawyer yarn, the NPP flag-bearer’s own law firm, Law Chambers of Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co., came out on July 11, 2008, to flex its muscles in the ongoing saga (see Ghanaweb.com articles of the afore-referenced date). Speaking for the firm, Alex Quaynor and Akoto Ampaw, both partners, bemoaned the veracity of the Nana Konadu story, alleging that the rumor had started with other National Democratic Congress (NDC) apparatchiks, before becoming Nana Konadu’s “pet project.” Alex Quaynor and Akoto Ampaw then added the following statement: “…Nana Akufo-Addo is not just an ordinary Lawyer with over 30 years of experience but also a notary, publicly appointed by the Chief Justice of Ghana.” The two lawyers further reminded Ghanaians that no one could practice law in Ghana, unless such a person was officially a member of the Ghana Bar Association, adding that the attendant qualifications to the bar were clearly delineated. It is this delineation of qualifications ? particularly the one under which Akufo-Addo gained admission to the Ghana Bar Association ? that people are now interested in, not whether or not Nana Akufo-Addo has successfully practiced law in Ghana since 1975, a fact that we are all aware of!

Even as the aforementioned lawyers took on Mrs. Rawlings for aspersing their boss [Nana Akufo-Addo], they, like Nii Osah Mills, completely failed to address the pertinent question on the minds of Ghanaian voters: How did Nana Akufo-Addo gain admission to the Ghana Bar Association? A succeeding question then is this: Did Nana Akufo-Addo get some type of preferential treatment in gaining entry to the Ghana Bar Association?

Nana Akufo-Addo is, undeniably, an honorable man. In fact, all of my previous articles on Nana Akufo-Addo ? I predicted that he would become the NPP flag-bearer, and I have always respected his poignant approach to embracing all sections of the country ? were very positive, so no one should accuse me of simply joining the fray of naysayers to castigate the NPP flag-bearer. It is my respect for Akufo-Addo, and the likelihood that this serious records-embellishment allegation could damage his chances of becoming the nation’s next president, that has compelled me to call on the man to come out to defend himself.

Admittedly, unless this issue of records-embellishment is addressed by Nana Akufo-Addo, the NPP flag-bearer is actually opening the door to lawsuits from all those who lost their cases under his guidance. Yes, it is possible! If, indeed, someone can prove that Nana Akufo-Addo is not a qualified lawyer, then every case that the man has ever handled could be brought back to the courts for re-adjudication! So, this issue is bigger than Nana Akufo-Addo’s personal integrity alone! Conversely, if Mrs. Rawlings’ allegations are as odious and preposterous as some have argued so far, then Nana Akufo-Addo ought to slap the former First Lady with a defamation lawsuit, in order to prove to the electorate that the NPP flag-bearer has nothing to hide! For Nana Akufo-Addo to take the trajectory of ambivalence on such an incendiary matter is simply imprudent at this time!

Yes, there are those Nana Akufo-Addo epigones out there who have sworn to take on anyone who disagrees with the NPP flag-bearer in the records-embellishment matter, but are these people incontestably correct? I will dare say no. Why? Because this salient Akufo-Addo-tied rumor, because it is of such gargantuan proportions, will simply not eviscerate, but will, at a future date, become fodder for the NPP flag-bearer’s political opponents. In fact, an opportune time for this allegation to re-surface is early November 2008, unless the matter is clearly and aggressively addressed and quashed now, to the satisfaction of the voting public, the people with the real power to effect change in Election 2008.

I call on Nana Akufo-Addo to make the important decision to address his detractors now, as this matter will simply not go away by wishful thinking. To those who are unaware of the Swift Boat conundrum that wrecked the chances of John Kerry in the 2004 U.S. Presidential Elections, please visit any major Internet search engine and read about this sad story. In fact, although the Swift Boat story was damning enough to John Kerry, more damning, surveys would later show, was Kerry’s ambivalence to it: John Kerry’s refusal to denounce the allegations of exaggerated valor leveled against him is said to have played a major role in his eventual loss of Election 2004 to George Bush.

Finally, Nana Akufo-Addo must realize that those epigonic characters singing his praise today will be the same people who will join in composing dirges for him, should he lose the elections due to this let-us-wait-and-it-will-all-pass attitude that the NPP flag-bearer’s camp appears to have adopted. Nana Akufo-Addo has been in politics long enough to understand that offense is always the best option in politics, and good, honest offense at that! Ignoring the tactics ? diabolical or otherwise ? of political opponents is a surefire recipe for disaster, so Nana Akufo-Addo must act now before this rather surmountable problem becomes too late to salvage!

If he was really called to the bar in the seventies based on merit, I don't see why the Ghana Bar Association cannot clear-the-air on this disturbing issue. The question is: don't they keep records of qualified lawyers called to the Bar? In any case, as the saying goes, there is no smoke without fire. He then also claims this was in response to Konadu's claims ahead of the 2008 elections that Nana is not a lawyer. But the latter claim was made in July 2008, eight clear months after Nana allegedly reported the lost of his qualifying certificate. In any case, how is it a big deal if you lose your certificate? It's obvious that Kpegah and NDC propagandists are merely seizing on the alleged report of Nana's lost certificate to do mischief.

Otherwise, how can we have a field of competent candidates like Nduom, Abu Sakara and Nana Addo/Bawumia and we hand the governance of this country to Mahama just because propagandists succeeded in convincing Ghanaians that studied stupidity is better than competence. Personally, I don't support the NPP petition, which seems to be the source of all these lies being told about Nana. I believe Mahama won the elections, but he did so due to the NDC's ability to prosecute negative propaganda against main rivals. See where they're taking this country after winning the elections. It's complete madness. Ghana should wake up!

They work hard to attain everything they have, this is because no one would give them the benefit of the doubt. So they have no choice. But in this case, it seems Nana Addo, the son of the then head of state got the benefit of the doubt and he defrauded the Legal Council. 2. In 2008, Nana Addo actually won the first round of elections on Dec. 7, about 4 months after Konadu's assertions in July 2008. As it happened to the NDC and Atta Mills in the run-off in 2000, the NPP couldn't obtain the support of the smaller parties, which decided to throw their support behind NDC for the 2008 run-off.

3. Both Kufuor and Atta Mills lost national elections, in the case of law professor Atta Mills twice, before finally winning the elections. Both also only won the elections after the opponent party had had two consecutive terms in office, which might actually suggest that unless a government proves extraordinarily incompetent Ghanaians may be settling for two terms for each government.

Please, account for how Nana managed to win the first round in 2008 and how Kufuor won two elections in spite of claims they weren't lawyers.

The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store.

The attorney for the railroad immediately cornered the rancher and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking.

After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, "You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I put one over on you in there. All the institutions of higher learning keep copies of their students credentials and certificates. The school where he obtained his law degree abroad can help rest the case. If we get the proof from the schools, then we can match them to when he was enrolled and certified as a lawyer in Ghana. The case will be over. This is simple. If I put my credentials out there, I should be able to support them with evidence such as where I got them. If I am holding a country's national ID, or a passport, the source must be credible and when verifying, must not proof difficult. This is a high level case that should be treated with seriousness. I cannot call myself a Dr., a lawyer, an engineer, or an accountant, etc. when I have not gone through the training to get it. The certified institutions that issue such certificates have their legal names boldly printed on the certificates. Ghanaians want to know more about this case. Thank you. Bismarck

A few weeks ago, our experienced Senior Judge Justice Kpegah (Retired) queried Nana Akufo Addo and his credentials as a qualified lawyer. I was rather disappointed after many many days, the public were dissecting and digesting Justice F. kpegah instead of asking Nana Akufu Addo (William Addo or Nana Adxx XXXXX etc I don’t know his name any more……!!! ) to proof in simple he is a qualified lawyer in his name. what I, a non lawyer would have done is to show documents and refer the public, court or intrested parties where those documents came from. But what have we got now ?? He cannot find his certificates ??? ooooooh !! Aaahhhh!!! Twiaaah !!! Does Nana Addo take us for fools or horses ? Because of all this ''kanana'' and ''cover up'' or better put libi-libi laba-laba life, his own kululu people cannot defend him.

Now if this is true, which I have strong convictions it may very well be, it is of no surprise to me. You will regain your respect, if you can face these accusations truthfully, or else Nana, this is something that will change the way people like myself think about you. In any case, bringing up Nana's case changes the focus of argument ( to ad hominem), a flaw in standard deliberations of a case. The major concern right now is that NDC may have cheated to power and that is what we should be looking into now. Even if Nana is found guilty of the accusations, the NDC government should not be left unscathed as a result. Nana should be held accountable and face his music just as the NDC government should face theirs. The idea is to prevent such things from happening in the future.
