IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT KORLE-BU IS THE DUMPING GROUND FOR MATERNAL DEATHS. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS IF SUCH A SO CALLED PREMIER HOSPITAL STILL OPERATES BASED ON THE PRINCIPLES ESPOUSED BY GUGGISBERG TO TREAT THE NATIVES FROM INFECTIOUS DISEASES. KORLE-BU WAS THEN THE SAVIOUR AND THERE ARE MANY STORIES TO THAT EFFECT.
FAST FORWARD TO THE 21ST CENTURY AND YOU HAVE A MONOLITHIC STRUCTURE COCOONED IN ITSELF OBEYING NO ONE AND CLAIMING TO HAVE THE ANSWERS TO THE HEALTH OF THE NATION.
INSTEAD OF DEVELOPING ALL THE PERIPHERAL FACILITIES TO TAKE CARE OF CASES SUCH AS NORMAL CAESAREAN SECTIONS WHICH ARE PURELY DISTRICT LEVEL SURGERIES OUR PREMIER HOSPITAL IS COMPETING WITH POLYCLINICS AND HEALTH CENTRES FOR THE MOST ORDINARY OF MEDICAL CONDITIONS. THE END RESULT IS INEFFICIENCY AND THUS REFEREED CASES GO THERE TO DIE.
WHAT DO I PROPOSE
1. STOP FURTHER INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE PRESENT AREA AND RATHER BUILD SPECIALIZED HOSPITALS FOR THE VARIOUS DISCIPLINES
2. RETHINK THE DESIGNATION OF KORLE-BU AS A TEACHING HOSPITAL
3. RELOCATE THE SOME OF THE NUMEROUS DOCTORS TO THE SURROUNDING HEALTH FACILITIES TO ACT AS A "SIEVE" FOR KORLE-BU SO THAT ONLY CASES NEEDING TERTIARY CARE WILL ARRIVE IN KORLE-BU. THIS IS IN SHARP CONTRAST TO WHEN CLIENTS WITH A DAMAGE TOE NIAL ARE COMPETING AT THE OPD WITH PATIENTS WITH SEVERE INJURIES TO SEE THE SAME DOCTOR
3. KORLE-BU IF IT IS TEACHING ANYTHING SHOULD EMBARK ON OUTREACH PROGRAMMES TO EDUCATE BOTH THE PUBLIC AND THE OTHER HEALTH FACILITIES ON HOW IT HAS POSITIONED ITSELF IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MATERNAL MORTALITY INSTEAD OF ACTING AS A GRAVEYARD FOR MOTHERS AND HOLDING LONG MATERNAL DEATH AUDITS WHICH COME UP TO NOTHING.
4. THE MENTALITY OF THE GHANAIAN DOCTOR OR MIDWIFE HAS TO CHANGE . THE COMFORT ZONE THEORY HAS NO PLACE IN MODERN HEALTH SYSTEMS. WHAT DO WE SEE. A COLLECTION OF OVER 400 DOCTORS IN 4 SQUARE KILOMETRES OF SPACE YET THEY CAN NOT PERFORM BETTER THAN ANY RURAL DISTRICT HOSPITAL IN SAVING MOTHERS. THE DOCTORS WILL NEED TO REALIZE THEY ARE NOT WORKING JUST FOR THEMSELVES BUT THAT ALL THEY ARE DOING BY SAVING MOTHERS CONTRIBUTES POSITIVELY TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
5. FINALLY THE CEO KORLE-BU SHOULD ASK HIMSELF WHETHER HE IS SUPERINTENDING OVER ONE HOSPITAL OR A NUMBER OF HOSPITALS AND SPECIALIZED CENTRES FOR WHICH GREATER AUTONOMY AND EFFICIENCY WOULD HAVE DONE A LOT OF GOOD.
WHERE ARE THE PROFESSORS AND WHAT LESSONS IS THE HOSPITAL GOING TO LEARN FROM THIS FILM. I AM AFRAID NONE

The CEO and all the senior positions are hled by Professor. These professor are (sorry to say) od and not current with the 21st Century processes.
Korle Bu should be headed by an MBA or someone trained in health administration. The medical school was orginally attached to Korle for teaching and practical training purposes. But over the years, the well educated (aka "too known") professors have maanaged to take over Korle Bu.
But the Professors will bot allow any changes. The Profs. are only looking out for themselves. Mosts of the them have to go on retirement--but they refuse. Because the system benefits them.
Take a look at the korle bu organizational system and it is a MESS.

in as much as lack of medical records and self referral are most of the time the cause of maternal deaths as stated by the above article, attitude of some workers is also a factor to be considered. it seems the doctors, nurses and pharmacists are too used to people dying and so sometimes do not attached any sense of urgency to their work. if we are saying lack of medical records would not enable the physician to know which drugs the person might react to and hence the patient dies, why don't they then try to give the necessary help which would still kill the patient anyway but has a margin of success attached to it? even those with referral are tossed before been seen by a doctor, pharmacist delay in dispensing medications and nurses also delay in administering medications. all these can also contribute to loss of precious time.

I have learnt a lot from the article and the responses. I now understand some of the reasons why the name, Korle Bu, is becoming synonymous with "the place of no return".
1. It appears that some re-arrangement of the current Korle Bu-Legon structure is necessary. This would lead to a re-definition of mandates;
2. Definitely, this problem calls for a decentralization of the health system to mitigate the pressure on Korle Bu which, apparently, is functionally collapsing under its own weight;
3. The question of patient health cards and health records is essential. It would be easy to make and issue health ID cards; but where would the patient health histories come from? Most Ghanaians have choices among the medicine man, the church priest and the modern medical doctor. That visit to the health clinic or Korle-Bu may be the patients' firsts. And there would be no health records. I am not suggesting that we should not start from somewhere.
