Why should we wait for our hero writers to die before we can be encourage to read and write?l ve always said that ghanaians must be lucky that the british left good education in english and apart from the british, americans,Autralia and new zealand we ghanaians write and speak the best accent of the queens english language hence many ghanain teachers go to Libya, china, nigeria, and many countries to teach english, today english is widely spoken and ghana ve not taken advantage of it to train more teach and use mainly as our national official language and to encourage adults ,kids and everyone to read and write hence good writers like kwame nkrumah,Atukwei okine,Adu boahen,Ama ATTA Adioo can not be replaced because many ghanaian dont read hence writers ve also given up.when i was in primary school in the 70's we only spoke in english and got punished when you spoke akan language, but today with about 600 FM radio stations granted liecense to broadcast in ghana most of these ve chosen to in TWI and other local language discouraging most ghanaian not read and write in english which is sad but they know that our local language are as weak as the cedi and are not spoken beyond ghana boarders ,until we start reading and writing to develop ourselves and be part of the changing global world we shall always lack behind .

Another thing that worries my mind until it came out in this topic is the inability of our leaders to write down their thoughts. Right from Kutu down to Atta Mills, all lacked the mental fortitude to pen a book based on their experiences. How sad.

It is useful to learn English as a foreign language. However, to use it as our official language is only perpetuating colonial subjugation. Remember that we were speaking our local languages before the whiteman arrived on our shores.
Let us learn to be literate in our own languages, and use a local language as our official language. We can still learn English as a foreign language.
We must be proud of our own language and culture.

In Nigeria, if you want to be a governor or senator, you must write a book! We do not have men and women of thought and action ruling Ghana, hence they can't write. RIP Achebe.

I want to agree with you that it should be a requirement for people aspiring to leadership to be writers at least once upon a time. Writing requires serious thinking and mind searching, which compels a person to examine critically what he/she is doing because others wolud resd it. If a leader knows others will read into his/her actions they would be mindful of their decisions and how it affects others. I think they should be writers.

Today, the state of the nation is so bad that other African nations who barely had any core educated elites during independence are doing greater things than us.
Ruwanda, a country that killed one million of themselves some 15 years ago got more balls in tackling policies our politicians can't even fathom.
They moved away from being Francophone to Anglophone and starting all over again.Importing teachers from Kenya and Tanzania. A move in my opinion that will not make their kids of tomorrow not having no "colonial master" syndrome .
Can Ghana take any bold decision like that?

Ghana needs to pay closer attention to Ruwanda, as it is now said to be a better place to do business than even the US.
Ghanaians in the US go after tons of big degrees but in the end can not unite the Ghanaians in the US to REALLY help Ghana and the rest of Africa. Such people do not even relate to Africans Americans that have been or stayed in Africa many times. They fear the true creativity such folks have to really help Africa uplift herself. They do not want to feel shamed by the mindsets of those they call, "akata". Such people whom really are their treincarnated Ancestors returned to be of real help for our Mother.
Oh how Elder Achebe has suffered mentally while looking at black events across Africa and the world. May his Soul rest in peace and he come back even stronger next time.

Thanks God for his life. He was an honest man. This is not like our dishonest leaders. It was sad to see the information minister at the recent vetting of the deputy upper west regional minister trying all his best not to let the vetting committee ask any questions on allegations levelled against the nominee. His excuse was that it will open the flood gates for people to bring unsubstantiated allegations against any of them. While they had the options to postpone the vetting and investigate the allegations, the whole thing was a sham. While the young man sweated like a pig, the committee was trying hard with very open questions to make some semblence of asking him. What is the BNI for? These people have lived with the young man for years and they know what they were talking about. The committee by all their actions were not interested. They felt these were niusance people. As an NDC supported, I see that this government is gradually setting very low benmarks for itself. In a country where those standing up for truth are made pariahs, we are heading for trouble.

Do most british people speak English? In Britain there are English , Welsh and Scotish people but all of them have decided to speak English. This has united the country for centuries. And it has not stopped other languages. Welsh for example is an accepted regional language both spoken in schools and in public life. Yet the Welsh are not accusing the Englsih people of tribalism . Likewise the English dint hae a superiority complex over the other british tribes. I think our main problem in ghana is and remains tribalism. Its not only the belief of superiority but the non acceptance ofother peoples cultures bpth by the majority and by the minority.
The fact that English language is commonly spoken as a language of business has not stopped the French of having french as a national language, It has not stopped the Polish of having Polish as an official language. It has not stopped the Malaysians with over 500 ethinc groups lving there to speak malaysian in this era of ´´globalization´´.
But what stops us from speaking the Twi language ? Why are students punished for speaking their native languages? Why are diasporians and middle class Ghanaians happy that their kids cnat speak their native languages?
To understand this ne has to look back at the time of imperialism. During that time Africans were instilled a sense of inferiority complex by telling that Africans achieved nothing good in comparison to Europe in terms of science, arts, history etc. This racist belief still continues today. Thats why we have this belief that the English is the most sperior language in the world. And thats why we have an over dependency to Europe in terms of culture, language, history. So we are led to thinkeurocentric and not africancentered, Thats why we bleach our skin and wear fake hair from Indians from which asian and european compaies profit a lot .
Because of this africans must decolonise their mind. Europeans are learnig ach others , asians do so too. But what is the issue with africans?
Language aslo means an insttution By speaking your country language one can save itself from imperial forces.
Therefore africans leaders must develop their languages and use it as official/ national languages.
