It is very heartening to see the African gradually believing in himself. This should give a psychological boost of "We can do attitude"to the coming generation.Given this feet I believe it is only a matter of time before other institutions take up the challenge and start coming with their own invention within their area of expertise(agric, auto,IT,medical equipments etc.etc)
The challenge is now on for Ghanaian scientist to come up with low cost innovative inventions that suit our system, enable us to repair them when they break down and reduce over reliance on donor help.
Lets not forget that even with all its technological advancement the USA space programme has at one time or the other had setbacks. Why are we afraid to start from somewhere.
It is true that food clothing and shelter are our paramount needs at the moment. However have we asked ourselves why almost all the rich countries(oil rich nations excepted) are those whose with scientific industrial economy.

They may have the capacity to build the satellite but not the capacity to build the launching ssytem - the rocket! Maybe that explains why he says they can send the satellite into orbit using a balloon. What he has forgetten is that real space begins some 160 km above sea level!
As for the satellite, you can even take a coca cola can, fix some tentacles on it, add a gps system (you can buy one on ebay at 50 dollars), a good thermometer and any other sensor of choice, and you will have built a satellite - provided you can catapult this to some 160 km above sea level.

If you simply follow a journalist’s headline, you are bound to commit a grave judgemental error. When I read the headline I said wow! This man is a joker. But then I kept my cool and read through the article. Then I found that the reporter was taking things out of proportions. Dr. Ashivie claims they have built a 350ml can satellite and that they aim to put a 3kg one into space some years to come.
I hope he knows the costs involved and that this runs into millions of dollars when we talk about the craft to carry the satellite into space. It is good to have big dreams, and we all know the benefits of satellites in modern-day living, but maybe the heads of this programme at the university should be circumspect with their ambitions and dreams.
In the meantime, I will keep my eyes up the skies any time I walk out of my room, as this guy is yet to explain how he is going to shoot the first satellite into space (some 160 km above Koftown).
