A cat kept getting out of his enclosure at the zoo in Alavanyo and Nkonya gates. Knowing that he could hop high, the zoo officials put up a ten foot fence. He was out the next morning, just roaming around the zoo and eating Akple and Okro Soup.
A twenty foot fence was put up. Again he got out.
When the fence was forty feet high, a Guinea fowl in the Abudu and Andani gate in the next enclosure asked the cat, "How high do you think they'll go with all the gates"
The cat said, "About a thousand feet, unless somebody locks the gates at night!"

When did the north /south akan migration, which had the Akwamus and Guans in the fore take place? (Nkonya is Guan and Alavanyo is Ewe) When did the east/west migration of Ewes from Agokoli's kingdom take place? The answers might put light on who first settled on the territory in dispute. The Akwamus and Guans are known to have been the earliest settlements in the Volta basin and surrounding hills.

Interesting questions there, but that is not what is needed today. If we go into history, we'll find the answers, but what is needed is a lasting solution. As I have written on a thread, most of the land in dispute, irrespective of the original or rightful owner, is supposed to be forest reserve. Nobody should really be looking for the rightful owner of a forest reserve, because it belongs to the nation.
And where lives are being lost, the right thing to do is to enforce the law and there will be no encroaching, and no conflict. It's a simple and straight forward solution.

The Ewes according to the history books left the rule of a wicked monarch Agorkorli in Benin. So they became anti monarchy upon arrival in the Volta Region of today. Just like the Americans against the British monarchy. Accordingly, they did not establish kingdoms and monarchies under which lands could be vested. So individuals own the lands; this has its pluses and minuses. In the minus column,it made it more difficult to settle land disputes and easy for modern day chiefs in the region to be poor . There are not many lands to be inherited as stool lands when you are made a chief. You end up spending your own money till you go broke. In the plus column, the chiefs do not have the ability to sell lands so problems like those associated with illegal miners are less likely to happen. Sammy is wrong, however,by insinuating that the land dispute has occurred because the people are Ewes.

There is no doubt in my mind that certain conflicts between certain communities in Ghana defiles lasting transformation.
The first reason being that proper research is not being carried out to identify the root causes of the problem and how the local people feel so strongly about their differecnces.
Yes we can see that force is being used despite various peace deals or talks.
l will give an example. l personally took the challenge to travel to and lived in Alavanyo to interview and find facts concerning this historical conflict. l stayed there for one month in 2009 and had the chance to interview some people from both sides.
As my interview progresses a certain Catholic Priest Stationed at Kpeme-Alavaanyo was so much annoyed about my private scholarship to do research on this conflict. He is a very popular figure in the area such that this Catholic Priest spoke dangerously about my presence and my scholarlistic presence to the extent that l had to abondan my research and left the place.
But the facts l gathered then ia so vital that l know very well all the attempts being made to transform the conclict then will not be all that successful.
We need proper research into the conflict to get a better way through its transformation.
The way a people feel the importance of their inheeitance which may conflict with another people is a historical memory in the presence and future especially when blood was shed in the contention.
The answer is simple but defiles our comprehension.
l will continue my research work in the the communuties again next year 2014 and there shall be a solution a final one to this conflict.
God forgive our sins for the sheeding of blood.

I have been following this news item the past few days and cannot believe that the reporters continue to show ignorance of the area being referred to. Honestly, I do not know what kind of journalists are taking over this country. They profess to be members of a distinguished profession and yet write as if they never entered a school of journalism.
For the information of the journalists reporting on the area, Nkonya refers to an ethnic group of Guan origin. These people live in 10 major communities (towns) – namely Asakyiri, Ahundwo, Akloba, Ahenkro (Wurubitor), Ntsumuru, Kadjebi, Tayi, Ntumda, Tepo, Wurupong, and at least eight villages – including Bumbula, Adenkensu, Sibriso – spread over an area not less than 200km.2
The Alavanyos are a group of ewes living in some seven townships (Among which are Kpeme, Wudidi, Dzogbedze, Deme, Agohoe, Abehenease, etc.). The land area of the Alavanyos will barely reach 60km2
The area of conflict lies between the Nkonya township of Tayi and the Alavanyos townships of Kpeme/Wudidi, and in principle, most of the disputed land is supposed to be a forest reserve. Whilst I do not want to go into the causes of the conflict, I will be grateful if reporters informing the public will at least get to the area and learn firsthand basic history of these areas before referring to the area as if it were a case of two towns fighting each other.
Now to this story. If the elderly man was murdered at Alavanyo, I will say it is impossible for the murder to have been committed by people from Nkonya, unless the murderer(s) moved from their town and entered any of the Alavanyo townships to commit the crime. If this is the case, it means the murderer(s) was/were very brave to enter the enemy’s home. But here again we lack information because the reporter failed to mention the exact township where the alleged murder was committed. The closest Nkonya townships to Alavanyo by road are Ntsumuru and Tayi, and each of these two townships are more than 2km from Alavanyo’s closest town (Kpeme).
Finally, the conflict is not over a simple piece of land but a large tract of land. Somehow, most of this land is supposed to be a forest reserve. To resolve the conflict forever, I suggest that government must enforce the “reserve” status of the land to ensure that nobody encroaches the land for hunting, gathering or farming. If necessary, to provide security, part of this tract of land could be turned into a “jungle warfare” training ground for the military. This will ensure a permanent presence of the military in this zone and discourage any encroachment. After all, all lands in Ghana belong to the government of Ghana.

Judging from your post, you’re very familiar with the area or you must have come from Nkonya, OR like myself, must have gleaned information from several people to arrive at your conclusion.
Fortunately, the first person I interviewed in this particular case happed to be the niece of the deceased. The old man in Alavanyo who died hailed from Kpeme and had a wife from Nkonya, so it is supposed the Nkonya guys know him well since he was, according to sources, an important fellow. He died on his farm which happens to be on the way to Nkonya Tayi from Kpeme.
For the Nkonyas, access to this place is very easy, so anyone with an intent to kill and has motivation could easily find his way through one of the numerous bush paths, and lay ambush, or simply surprise the person on his farm. It is the same way Alavanyos who want to do the same could sneak into Nkonya lands.
But as you fondly pointed out it will take a definite intervention of your proposition to kill the problem.

As a disclaimer- I hail from Nkonya Ntumda but not been to the area for a long time.
It looks to me like the majority of the people form this area can co-exist- people are marrying across the 'border' and people haev friends a cross.
i think if that land is a forest reserve no matter what history is behind it it should be protected as such.
Also I think the action of one rogue person- like teh killing of thsi Alavanyo guy- which i think is rather unfortunat eshould be investigated.
I think if the police do their job well a few people who plotted and executed this paln could be arrested. The fact one rogue guy from Nkonya kills someone does not mean all Nkonya guys are out to fight! I know there is a historical battle i know a lot about that from my parents.
It's abou time these squabbles are closed for good.
One big issue is the fact that in our country law enforcement agencies are not to be trusted.
