Date: 20-Mar-2013
The exceptional performance of Mr Adams Abdul Aziz, formerly of Navrongo Senior High School (SHS) and Mr Godfred Owusu, formerly of Koforidua Secondary/Technical Senior High School, in the 2012 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) may come to naught if they do not get support to continue their tertiary education.
The two who scored eight As in their respective programmes in the examination won the Overall Best in the Agriculture and Technical programmes, respectively, in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Merit Award. They are the first-ever candidates in the history of the awards to have met the criteria in the two programmes.
In spite of their brilliant performance, the two are yet to enter tertiary institutions due to financial difficulties. Mr Owusu is said to have lost his father and had to rely on COCOBOAD to enable him complete the secondary education. Mr Aziz, a native of Hamile in the Upper West Region is from a needy family.
This came to light at the Asare-Menako’s Hall, where well wishers who thronged the venue to cheer up this year’s WAEC Merit Award winners were informed that the two students were yet to enter tertiary institutions.
The cheers, shouts and applause that characterised the ceremony were suddenly followed by shouts of “Oh no” when the Principal Public Relations Officer of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, mentioned the names of the two and announced that they were yet to enter a tertiary institution because of financial difficulties and then appealed to the public to support the two financially to enable them to pursue their tertiary education.
That was, indeed, an anti-climax for many of those who attended the programme.
Commenting on the plight of the two students, the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Stephen Adu, said unfortunate though it was, there were avenues their parents could explore to get funding for the affected students.
He mentioned the GetFUND as one of those numerous avenues and urged parents of the two candidates to formally apply to the fund immediately for scholarship before the tertiary institutions started in September this year.
Some of the guests at the function appealed to the Office of the President to intervene to ensure that the two students realised their dreams.
It was all applause, shouts and cheers for Yvette Yeboah-Kordieh, formerly of Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (SHS); Josebert Ayambire, formerly of Notre Dame SHS and Bright Kwame Seyram Tsevi, formerly of the Keta SHS, for not only picking the first, second and third places, respectively, in the WASSCE in Ghana, but also in the sub-region.
They received $300, $250 and $200, respectively, plus a certificate each, while their respective schools received a plaque each for producing a winning student.
Miss Yeboah-Kordieh also emerged as the Overall Best Candidate in the General Science programme and for her price, she received $250, a certificate and a plaque for her former school.
Miss Sandra Frempong, formerly of Holy Child SHS, broke the age-old jinxs of the inability of candidates to meet the criteria in the Business programme by scoring eight As. She was adjudged winner of the merit award in the Business Programme.
Other award winners were Ewuranna Smith Quayson and Belinda, both formerly of Wesley Girls SHS, who won the Overall Best in the Home Economics and Visual Arts programmes, respectively, while Mr Michael Larbi Siaw, formerly of Presec, Legon, won the Overall Best in the General Arts programme.
All the individual programme award winners were each given $250 and a certificate, while their respective schools received a plaque each.

YOU DON'T GIVE A SECOND MANDATE TO AN INCOMPETENT AND CORRUPT GOVERNMENT, NO!! NOT AT ALL, THAT IS ABOMINATION IN DEMOCRACY, VERY SUICIDAL. HAD NDC MANAGED THE ECONOMY WELL, THESE ECONOMIC PROBLEMS WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THE SITUATION. NDC HAS PRESIDED OVER THE BIGGEST RESOURCES GHANA HAS EVER HAD. THEY HAVE ALSO CONTRACTED MORE LOANS THAN ANY OTHER GOVERNMENT IN OUR HISTORY, BUT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR THIS. GHANAIANS SHOULD HAVE ENJOYED SOME ECONOMIC PROGRESS AT THIS TIME IN OUR HISTORY. THE ECONOMY IS COLLAPSING BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT IS SO CORRUPT. TO RESCUE THE SITUATION, THE POOR IS NOW BEING FORCED TO PAY. THIS IS INJUSTICE. THIS IS NOT THE GHANA KUFFOUR HANDED OVER TO NDC, HE EVEN ADDED FRESH CRUDE OIL WELLS. NPP TRANFORMED GHANA TO A MIDDLE INCOME ECONOMY WITH LIMITED RESOURCES BUT GOOD POLICIES. NDC IS WOEFULLY REVERSING THESE NPP ACHIEVEMENTS. GHANA'S CURRENT SITUATION IS VERY DISTURBING. WHEN THE HISTORY IS TOLD, IT WILL BE SAID THAT GHANAIANS WERE OFFERED FREE SECONDARY EDUCATION, IMPROVED UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, SOCIAL HOUSING FOR THE POOR AND AN EGALITARIAN SOCIETY BUT 50% SAID NO THANK YOU. THEY PREFERRED ECONOMIC "WOYOMISATION" , PHANTOM DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, PHILANDERERS FOR LEADERS, MACHIAVELLIAN DISRESPECTFUL CORRUPT LOUTS AND A VISIONLESS EVIL GOVERNMENT. I AM SO PROUD I VOTED FOR NANA AKUFFO ADDO.

Blame the selfish student leaders of the 1970s, most of whom are currently our selfish public figures. They started this idea of 'bangla' and agitated for the money used to feed them to be handed over to them so that they would arrange to feed themselves. The University was established to provide quality education, amongst others, to produce graduates comparable to those educated in the U.K., Australia and elsewhere. They were to be well equipped to appear on the same platform at international confabs and to propound the African Image as befitting modern Africa. Somehow along the Course the lecturers lost their bearing and allowed the undergraduates to impose their rural lifestyle into the campus. The effect is that there is no difference between the educated and the uneducated street vendors.
The Vice Chancellor now faces a herculean task ahead of him. Good luck to him.

This is a no-brainer! If you as Vice Chancellor have read reports of studies indicating that food safety is a problem for your academic community, what do you do? There are canteens, food vendors and others who handle the food. is it not a case of instituting simple, straightforward but stringent rules about food handling? Have the food vendors e.g. been screened by the Health and Safety Inspectors? How often are the premises of the food canteens inspected? what are the food standards and do they meet them?
I simply don't get it. what is the point of the VC making this a part of his speech and appearing to be expecting someone else to act on the matter? It is called leadership and delegation!!! Please establish a department / committee to oversee this process and invite the occupational health team (plenty of them are trained in Korle-Bu) to lead in the inspections. Is this too difficult for the VC Group to do? Why do you have a postgraduate school of public health? Get your people working man!

another learned monkey.the system has provided for them including you professor monkey, till this level, who are these parents of these family and national treasures who will not take up this matter? if they have been able to feed them properly all this time. i remember how the campus feeding system was poor in apam secondary. that was in 1997-80. rose pillars ( the family had several wards in the school)provided quality food privately between accra and apam. i know not every parent could afford, but parents organise yourselves. if an organised church is using the campus, parents could be more concerned and possibly help the poor ones like me. collective this, collective that, they have never been of good quality. elegant atenga does not cook for his family let alone cooking for students. it is time for ghs also to provide and cater for themselves. govt govt govt is you and i. minus corruption, minus fertilizer, minus, minus, minus. we the ghs in one way force our leaders to steal. no matter the size of the national cake, the guy in charge becomes a cat watchman sitting and looking on as incessant feroce bites come from all angles. the guy in charge gets scared and feels like taking his share before it is too late. we devour our national treasure furiously, with our over demands. after all only the politicians at the tip of the iceberg would be held publicly responsible as in this case. monkey professor is reacting in a similar way. the problem is we all have the same reaction of always blaming others, whereas in our individual capacities could have done better than kiuffour, rawlings, mills and sitting atenga

Thanks Prof Aryeetey for reverting to the old system of the halls'kitchens preparing food for students.I was in Legon when the present system of students feeding themselves was introduced as a result of students agitation and to me it was the worst decision ever.Instead of students using the money given to them to feed themselves they used it for other purposes and fed on banana and groundnuts.Instead of 3 meals a day it was at best 2.Students became malnourished and frequently fell sick.I will strongly advise all students to embrace'feeding by the halls' system for it is the best that they can get to feed themselves well.It is cheaper and healthier. It will also save students time and make the halls' environment cleaner.

Oh Vice Chancellor, if you are hatching plans to raise some money for the University, spare these outmoded tactics.
First, why scare the students to force them to patronize your poultry-style feeding plan?
Secondly, these Night Market vendors have served the University for years; supporting the students with palatable, reasonably priced and healthy food under hygienic conditions (a standard set by the University). So what are you talking about? Many leaders of today including you (may be) I believe enjoyed meals from the Bush-K for years and never died from it. I enjoyed it too but still alive! So what are you talking about?
Third, these venders are very nice to the students especially the needy as they see them as their children and siblings to the extent they would credit food to them for weeks and months just for the students to pay back when the student loans come in. So what are you talking about?
Furthermore, the Night Market setting give students some home feeling not the canteen scene that resembles lecture halls and JCRs that they always are confined in. Most students use the Night Market setting feeling to recover from missing home as they get the chance to interact with the vendors; most of who see the students as their pride and occasionally counselors to their children’s academics. So what are you talking about?
Please let the food vendors breathe some air and allow your canteen dream to come to pass so they can compete positively with the Night Market vendors to give the students the best.
Remember these students are not babies or High School boarding students any more to be fed like poultry. They are in tertiary institution, so let them live as such.
Also, bear in mind that the vendors have families to take care of so please don't kill their means of livelihood.
These vendors sometimes cook on sight with the University's running water; are we to believe that the University's water is polluted?
Just ensure they are serving quality food and doing the right thing; that way, you would be doing your work well.

This VC must be a nut case. Even if it were true that the food of the students contains "faecal matter", he should not make it public as that would naturally demoralise the students. Mark my words -- he has incited them to go on aluta! A VC should not talk like that in public and the University Council should sanction him. For what he should do, as the administrative head of the institution, is to sack the head of the pantry department and appoint a new one, and impress upon the new one that if a similar situation recurs, the new one will also be dismissed. If you are the head, and shit is floating about AROUND you and you do nothing about it, the fact that you have acknowledged the presence of the shit does not absolve you from blame. It shows that you are conniving at incompetence. Or maybe preparing the ground for a scheme that you know the students may not readily accept. That is dishonest.

The 11 types of shet:
The ghost shit: You are sure you've made it. His traces are on the toilet paper but there's no trace of shit in the toilet. It can also be called the Torpedo shit when you'd heard it falling into the water.
The rubber shit: It leaves very ugly marks on the toilet. You clean your butt at least 18 times and it still ain't clean. You must fill your panties with toilet paper in order not to fill them with shit.
The teflon shit: It comes so smooth that you don't even notice it. No traces of it on the toilet paper. You must look into the toilet to be sure you've made it.
The delayed firing shit: You've barely cleaned your butt, stood up, and the next round starts.
The snake shit: Slippery, with the width of the thumb and a length of at least half a meter.
The cork shit: Also known as "the swimmer". Although you've flushed 3 times it still floats in the toilet. Gush! How can you get rid of it?! It usually comes everywhere except at your own place.
The wish shit: It's like having ants in your bowels. You fart, you do everything except actually talking a shit. It usually comes at parties, forcing you to use the toilet for a long time.
The wet butt shit: This type of shit hits the water with high velocity and at a 45 degrees angle throwing water towards your butt. Worst about this is that you never know if the water on your butt is actually water or shit.
The concrete shit: Also called the "Oh My God!" shit. Just as you start doing it and you wish you've done a local anesthesia.
The King Kong shit: Also called the elephant shit. It's so big that it refuses to go away before being shredded.
11. The beer shit.. One of the most common but one of the most deadly types of shit. It comes in the day next to the night before. Usually it doesn't even smell so bad, but outsides may lie. The toilet is splashed with it everywhere. You're surprised that from your butt, the shit can go on so many directions. After you've done it, you realize that you've ran out of toilet paper and the WC doesn't have a brush. It comes just like the cork shit when you're not at your own place.

The third paragraph states that the water used to prepare the food is contaminated, if that is the case, wasting one's hands in contaminated water doesn't represent cleanliness.
The Vice Chancellor has made the authorities aware of the problem, this problem is common in many other parts of the world, simple water purification will solve the problem, this should not be seen as a political issue.

Water contamination is not unique to African countries,I live in New York City, and I can tell you that occasionally, sewage treatment plants spill over in different parts of the State, sometimes due to flooding, or other situations, when that happens, the media informs the public to boil their water before using, until further notice, etc.
Whenever I hear Africans who domicile in foreign lands, say this and that problem only happens in Africa, I feel sick to my stomach because either these people are ignorant of their foreign environment, and have consumed foreign faeces themselves, or they are brain-washed liars.
Beloveds, please believe me, your brother, when I tell you that contaminated food, water, medicines, and everything that exist in Africa, also exist in some of the most so-called: Advanced, Civilized, Technologically advanced countries in the world, in some parts of New York State, people can open their water taps/faucets, light a match near the flowing water, and the water tap catches afire because natural gas seeped into the water, caused by fracking or fraking, a process where natural gas is extracted from drilling deep into bedrock to extract natural gas, which sometimes causes contamination of under ground aquifers.
Only in Africa my foot, you slaves need to get a life and stop misrepresenting the facts about massa's house.

Thank you Mr.VC for gong back to basics. I am a graduate of the University of Ghana and resided in Mensah Sabah Hall. The Hall Cafeteria was very good and the food was delicious. It helped me alot eespecially during examination weeks. The Laaundry mat should also be revived. A private public partnership would be a best way to go. This will prevent waste, and also give the University and hall authorities a wiggle room to replace contractors who offer poor quality food or charge higher prices

A sad reflection of the depth the nation's flagship university has plummeted. The washrooms at the halls, lecture halls, and Balme Library are unsanitary - no regular toilet paper, smelly urinals, unflushed water closets, and no water and soap. And all these, alone, are reasons to get some people fired, something unknown in our stultified culture.
