I don't think so. We have very poor work ethics, lazy and corrupt. The evidence is everywhere. The collapsing infrastructures and poor maintenance record tells me we are not ready for prime time. Putting nuclear power plant in the midst will be like putting a loaded gun in the hands of a monkey. It is an accident waiting to happen. No we can't handle it. Nuclear power maintenance and management is no monkey business. Look elsewhere for our energy needs.

pepeni its obvious we need to break things down for you and your illiterate cat and dog eaters not forgetting your ashanti retards who sent their king loaded with 500kgs of gold to battle and got drowned. You are incompetent and think you can bullshit us with more lies. the country has collapsed under your watch and is no more. you say civil servants and ndc rouges chop over 60% of the income , so lets do the elementary school maths , half a million wages of an average of 500$ if you include all the perks and benifits times 12 months amounts to 3 billion dollars. you say there is a some 3 billion chinese money somewhere so the whole nation should see this as some kind of solution. in reality the country needs a hundred times more worth of job creating investments so with taxes you can service these wages otherwise is only a matter of time when total chaos takes over. 300 billion will give a profit of around 30 billion a year so at a 10% tax you may just cover these poor ass wages . but what have you done , your corrupt system has frustrated all investments and attempts other than this chinese craziness as if they dont pay you they can not pass , who really needs who? few people on this forum remember that delegation after delegation have come include john kerry secretary of state of obama but were all thrown out because jj didnt get his cut. you are just wasting our time so just resign and go away. you dont have any solutions so if you dont go willingly force will be applied you idiot. we have people mainly fantis achieving global success but at home they are frustrated and denied the opportunity to perform or even killed like you did to mills, soon you will hear the clarion call and the sharpened knives and stones will be ready , long live the Republic of Akan.

Because all we do is to imitate the west; from projects to entertainment. No wonder we claim to be "developing" but cannot even provide water and other basics of life.

However, we can get somewhere if we begin somewhere and with something. America/ the West keep improving on what the got wrong some years back and now the can talk of advancement.
Ghana has a great potential to becoming a great nation with great capabilities provided we can explore the opportunities available to us without fear.
Nuclear Energy is sustainable. We have the men (Physicists) or manpower to take it up. The technology is exportable from other nations provided with stick to the international requirements towards energy development. If that remains our sole goal, we can do it. It would become a problem if our mind is to process towards achieving nuclear bomb. Other than that, we should be fine.

My brother how many people were dead due to due to the devastated incidence you have mention? For example, as an integral part of the U.S. energy mix, nuclear energy is a secure energy source that the nation can depend on. Unlike some other energy sources, nuclear energy is not subject to unreliable weather or climate conditions, unpredictable cost fluctuations, or dependence on foreign suppliers. In fact, nuclear energy is a strong domestic as well as international industry, with extensive fuel supply sources. Nuclear power plants are large units that run for extended periods. They help supply the necessary level of electricity, or "baseload generation," for the electricity transmission network, or "grid," to operate. U.S. nuclear power plants are a key element in the stability of for electrical grid. Itās only shallow minded who will kick against nuclear power.

New generation of Nuclear plant now exist. They are more safer to run than the old types.
Ghana is more than ready to manage nuclear power plant. Professionals from Ghana Atomic Energy have been managing Nuclear Reactor for the past 50 years without accidents. They can detect and forestall any future accidents. I have confident in GAEC because they have knowledge and skills required to take Ghana to a solid energy level needed for industrialization.
GAEC has installed quality Controlled Mechanisms for reducing workers safety and health hazards. Definitely GAEC workers are apt to the task of providing peaceful application of nuclear energy. We hope to provide more services to Ghanaians and the sub-region when given the chance to have the nuclear power plant for commercial purposes.
Kofi Thompson should be encouraged to pay visit to GAEC premises to learn more about safety measures put in place to prevent accidents. It would definitely remove all doubts from his mined. Ignorant is a disease. Please Thompson feed your mind.

Ghana is located right on the equator and so we get the brunt of the sun's power. Why don't we harness it.There are nations in some parts of the world who heat and cool their homes, offices and industrial plants with a fraction of the solar energy that's all around us in Ghana. Why can't our leadership pursue a comprehensive policy of a complimentary solar energy production to alleviate the perennial shortages of electricity, huh?
Kudos,Mr Thompson, you are a lonely voice in the wilderness but I promise to join you 'cos your contribution to this warning against this national suicide should be well heeded to or else we'll all perish.

Though NOT the only solution I agree with you that it is the next best option for Ghana now.
Prez Kufuor, after long deliberations, set up the Prof. Adzei Bekoe Committee to advise the Govt on the Nuclear option.
The Committee recommended that Ghana ready itself to instal Nuclear Energy capacity by 2018!
Following from that, the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, affiliated to the University of Ghana, was set up at Kwabenya. This was to prepare by producing the requisite human resource base to man such a facility! The NPP Govt was preparing to set up a Nuclear energy plant when it lost power.
The cost of a Nuclear plant, the capacity of the Bui dam, is not more expensive than constructing the dam.
The Nuclear energy plant is a neater and cheap source of energy. It is not as dangerous as people have been made to believe! Through out history, since its inception, there has been only three Nuclear reactor accidents!!
The NDC should call for the Prof. AdzeI Bekoe Committee Report, and be supported to pursue this agenda.
Let us eschew all cynicism and prepare appropriately.

I don't know if Kofi Thompson is a nuclear energy expert, because we've been operating nuke in Ghana since independence at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, with world-class nuclear scientist and experts manning the place. Listen to Dr Kwame Nkrumah's speech on independence day, and you will realize he was ahead of people like you because he mentioned nuclear energy back then, because he was very optimistic, and knew the economic, social and health benefits of nuclear energy out weighs the negative/risk. We use nuclear medicine in our hospitals and generate nuke waste but have you ever heard of a single nuclear accident happening in Ghana? Its because our experts are good. Moreover, President Kufuor in his bid to find lasting solutions to our energy/electricity problem, applied to IAEA to establish nuke plant in Ghana. The application was far advanced but Prof Mills discontinued with the proposal because he was not ready to tackle our energy problems. Check IAEA if licenses are granted to just any country. He went ahead to establish a department at Legon/GAEC to train more experts as part of the requirements to handle the industry, because its a pre-requisite even before the license is granted by IAEA, and so I see no point in this story. It takes visionaries to go nuclear, because it involves a lot of leadership and a big heart. You have not also told us if renewable/solar energy is enough to power a single manufacturing industry. Check and see if any western country developed using solar/renewables. Its just an after-thought. We need clean, cheap readily available energy to attract investors to our country to create the necessary investments and the jobs we've been crying for, otherwise, we should forget about industrialization. All I can say is the black man is always seeing the glass as half empty and not half full. One thing you may not be aware of is that, 21 century nuclear plants are handy, robust and very different and can withstand what happened in Japan. Moreover, Ghana is not an earthquake prone zone. Those plants which couldn't stand the severe earth quake in Japan are over 50 years old, and the technology is also very old.
I used to have the same mentality until I decided to pursue graduate studies in nuclear energy law and policy and have since had a change of mind based on knowledge because I was very ignorant.

The author has expressed his concerns which include cost ineffectiveness, potential env'tal hazard, corruption, sabotage and poor management. I think Kofi needs education on nuclear power option to refine his thinking. The experts can be found at Gh Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC). Akosombo dam was constructed over 50 yrs ago to operate efficiently for 50 yrs. History has it that other people like Kofi argued against it.
Already, nuclear power n radiation technology research n dev't, training, management n in fact capacity building is on-going at GAEC. I counter argue that, economically nuclear power is capital intensive at the construction phase but cost effective at operational phase; nuclear waste is radioactive n health n safety practices are observed strictly; corruption can be eschewed by real professional (workers), finally, sabotage is guided by national n international treaties n conventions gov't has endorsed.
In this new era, contemplating nuclear n acting nuclear is the best option.

Mr. Thompson,
Your ideas are laudable but in making your case you based your arguments on very wrong premises. Our first president was a visionary. He saw what we're seeing today and started the Atomic Energy Commission. Wind and solar can contribute to easing the immediate problems but what about 50 years down the line? Do we want to progress into a manufacturing nation? Where will the energy for full industrialisation come from? Ghana has worked with the IAEA for decades and the safeguards will be in place. As for corruption, it's everywhere, including the US of A. It's how as a nation, we push our priorities.

Apparently Mr Thompson is ignorant of the fact that Ghana has been operating a nuclear research reactor using high enriched uranium (HEU, bomb grade) for the past eighteen years without one single (mini-mini-minor) incident!!! It is being run by Ghanaians not Europeans!!! Ghana can also sign an agreement with the plant provider to retrieve the spent fuel. It is also rather ridiculous to say that we should not do something because someone unknown will sabotage it!!! Has someone sabotaged the Akosomo Dam, or the Tema Rifenery, etc. etc..?? The energy problem is what we call "BASE LOAD", something renewables cannot supply, you will have cloudy, rainy days, windless days, etc. Do you shut down the factory until the sun comes back up or the wind starts blowing again??
