1.) A succession of FAILED LEADERSHIPS
2.) A Government without a vision for the country
3.) A Government that does not care about the plight of the people
4.) A citizenry, though largely inter-married, so tribally focused in their thinking
5.) The best intellectuals have drifted out of the country
6.) An opposition party that dwells on pettiness instead of helping to mold the democracy
7.) We still export cocoa and import chocolate
8.) We found oil, yet domestic oil prices keep going up
9.) Gold prices are rising yet we don’t benefit because of unscrupulous arrangements to sell our interest
10.) Corruption at its helm biting at everything and stifling small businesses
11.) Everyone begging for something
12.) A country blessed but clueless as to how to use its resources.

I cry for the cruelty that ravages the land, removed from our will. I cry for the endless troubles that fall and continue to fall on my people. I cry for the children left to fend themselves. I cry for peace, if it may come at all. I cry for the sufferings that mar this empty plates. I cry ’til the tears dry up, ’til the parents come home with food to fed hungry children. I cry for all this to end, ’til the house is a home again. Till then I will continue to cry for my bleeding country

Amadu, I enjoyed reading your article but I disagree with you that if Ghana was a man, no woman would marry him. I am not sure of the sex of Ghana, though we often say Mother Ghana. Again, most states/countries are referred to as she and not he.
Assuming you are right that Ghana is a man, since his birth in 1957, women have queued to marry him and have married him. Ghana has never been short of women who are dying to marry him. China, the West, the East, the North and the South have all married Ghana at one time or the other and are still married and marrying Ghana. Ghana is a very wealthy man and so has attracted both beautiful and ugly women across the globe globe in marriage. Sadly, because of the failures of our leaders and people, these women or 'gold diggers' only suck Ghana dry and the man is growing old with nothing to show for all his wealth. Just look at the new found oil. The women (foreign investors) get 90% and Ghana get only 10%. You get that?
I also disagree with you that poor roads contributes to the accidents and deaths on Ghana's road. Poor roads are only part of the causes of the numerous road accidents and the deaths as well as many disabilities caused to surviving victims. The real cause of roads accidents is indiscipline of divers and other road users such as driving under the influence of alcohol, unnecessary over-speeding and over-taking, poor vehicle maintenance, overloading, poor driving skills, etc. If poor road conditions were the cause, then, there should be no or fewer accidents on the newly constructed George Bush Highway in Accra but what is the reality?

NIGERIA TO WIN AFCON CUP SEVEN TIMES!!!
Nigeria will keep the AFCON Cup for a very very long time before Ghana ever think of smelling it. With or without your 'juju' we shall keep the CUP with the power of Holy Ghost on our side, and Jesus Christ, our "keeper" shall 'KEEP' the AFCON CUP for us, for a very very long time.
(AFCON CUP TO BE JOINED BY "WORLD CUP" very soon). 'Super Eagles' of Nigeria, shall soon become "World Champions" very soon in Jesus mighty name, Amen. (It is settled in heaven). I really mean business, and with very 'POWERFUL PRAYERS' for the 'SUPER EAGLES' of Nigeria, and the real Jesus Christ of Nazareth on our side, VICTORY IS OURS. This is no joke! No weapon, (like 'Ghana JUJU'), fashion against us shall prosper. Ameeeeeeeeeeeeeeen.
Therefore, you Ghana people should stop dreaming of laying your hands on that Cup for a very very LOOOOONG TIME. All of you Naija HATERS can go to HELL.
I AM YOUR NEMESIS.

Well written but it is one of those writings. By the close of day, it becomes an archive. The democracy you mentioned is also not being practiced in Ghana. What is being done is voting and counting and the winner like Asante Kotoko or Hearts of Oak rules until another voting and counting. Democracy starts with campaign based on policies (not I will continue with better Ghana Ghana agenda). The brains of Ghanaians have been manipulated so much that reasoning is through the lens of NDC or NPP. Even for them to eat the food is seen through NPP and NDC. Look at our journalists who are supposed to enlighten the public; the least said about them the better and one wonders if they are also educated illiterates or just the stomach. Our problems are insurmountable. But the worse is to waste another nest four years in incompetent hands currently.

The ONLY SOLUTION TO GHANA'S PROBLEMS is planning a way to stop the BRIBERY & CORRUPTION,which is the CANCER OF AFRICA.
Charity begins at home.MAHAMA & CO should start to stop their corruption first, then they can enact laws to combact corruption.THIS IS THE SOLUTION I THINK GHANA SHOULD ADDOPT.
WHY?
I am saying this because,BECAUSE of cottuption,no GOVERNMENT AGENCIES(INSTITUTION) MAKES ANY PROFIT.Therefore,NDC does not know or entertains fears on how to create jobs that would not yield any profit but goes into the pocket of the Government Bosses(MD's).This very problem renders the youth, our major working force unemployed.THAT IS BAD FOR GHANA.Foreigners open businesses and use our cheapest labour(worldwide) to make money out of us,instead of Ghanaians themselves making it.How can an INDIA,CHINESE,PAKISTANI opens FASHION COMPANIES in Ghana if GHANAIANS know FASHION more than these nationals who either were wearing ONE CLOTHE(CHINESE) as COMMUNIST,and others wearing SMUGS(INDIANS & PAKISTANIS) dominate the FASHION BUSINESS in GHANA?USA HAS PROVIDED A VERY HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR SUB-SAHARAN COUNTRIES(AGOA) to tap into their IMPORTS TRADE but it looks like these foreigners are benefiting from it with their exports(Manufactured Products) from GHANA.CORRUPTION should be tackled or we would not be able to climb any further.THIS IS VERY SAD.
We have to be able to gear our thought into creativity instead of finding the cheapest ways to make money through BRIBERY & CORRUPTION.
The WHITES compete in INNOVATION,CREATIVITY every now and then.most of these guys I am talking about are even TEENAGERS,WHO ARE BACKED BY THEIR LECTURERS,BUSINESSMEN,BANKS who find their creativity innovative and therefore, apt to bringing something new.
The competition in such "ARENA" is so huge that, many cannot even bring their INVENTIONS out because, one might not know what the other is working on to challenge or compete what the other has invented.
THIS IS AN IMAGE OF WHAT I CALL "A VIBRANT ECONOMY"We have to emulate that.
The BLACK,on the other hand,is not thinking of how to start anything with the brain God has given us but always finds a wrong and easiest ways to make money(BRIBBERY & CORRUPTION)THAT IS OUR WOE.

MENSAH,
Congratulation on your clear-view comments on the horrible situation in Ghana.
How can we make any progress and bring soothing comfort to our people when our politician and the Governmen support such huge acts of stealing and smuggling. The case of the 1.5 tonnes of gold worth US$82 million being airfreighted, under false airwaybill manifest labelled as "laboratory samples" to Iran via Libya via Istanbul be pushed under the carpet? This and such other nefarious acts of ruining the country have the ultimate effect of resulting in electricity power outages and water shortages in Ghana.
I recall the pitying remark by Komla Agbeli Gbedemah at the State Dinner to inaugurate Akuffo Addo as President that very night hat he was flown out of the country for brain surgery in Britain. There was water shortage at the State Banquest at the State House. K. A. Gbedemah asked, "Has the water in the Volta lake also dried up?
With this kind ofpoor profile of Ghana, how can those of us abroad feel enticed to leave the comforts of foreign countries and come back home?

You are absolutely right. Nkrumah made that remark that "we can govern ourselves" in the presence of some prominent black politicians from the US including MLK.
Look at us today. The most unpardonable excuse we hear everyday is the same. "We will do this and that" from the very people who are quickly to take some purgative medication to clean their stomachs just for them to over indulge.
I hate to hear people saying we are independent when they know that the opposite is rather the game on the ground. WE ARE NOT INDEPENDENT.

Umaru, thanks for your brilliant article.
You have said it all; i couldn't have put it better.
Your article has captured Ghana as it is @56.
The pain is when I look around and notice that what Nkrumah achieved in nine years, have not been improved on on; worse still all his achievements have been destroyed.
What do we say of Nkrumah, who when we did not produce Oil, still built a refinery; when we needed electricity, built the Akosombo Dam; when we needed to import Aluminium, he built VALCO; when we needed to trade he built two harbours; when we needed houses, he set up the State Housing Corporation; not to mention the Nsawam Cannery, The Aboso Glass Factory, The Kade Match Factory, The Black Star Line, The State Transport Corporation,.....and the list goes on.
I FEEL SORRY FOR GHANAIANS WHO DID NOT ENJOY THE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS OF NKRUMAH.
As I said earlier the worse thing is that if post Nkrumah Politicians were not going to improve on Nkrumah's development, at least they could have maintained them.
Rather, they have destroed all of them.
Instead of today's politicians coming together to draw up a National Agenda, and then still voting to elect Parties to form Governments, to see who will carry out the National Agenda best, they get voted into power and they DISCONTINUE the previous Government's projects simply because it is regarded as their "enemy's" project.
Until we resort to a National Agenda, I can't see this man, GHANA, retiring to enjoy a good life.
Well done UMARU.

I work for an NGO in Ghana, that has been operating for 2 years, spent a lot of hard earned money and yet has nothing to show for it. We are now a new team that came to restart the whole work, yet constantly being worked against by people who are more interested in defending their title than in doing the work. This situation in my opinion can be seen throughout Ghana, in the organizations and ministries as well. Yet everywhere we meet Ghanainans who sit back and complain, or even beg for money from foreigners. Yet Ghana is a country so full of possibilities, healthy strong people with good ideas and I think you have come to a time when you need to stand up and do the work yourselves. Forget about your politicians, how can you trust a group that has not done anything for almost 50 years? The role of all you smart, interested and critical minded Ghanaians - be the voice of inspiration for your fellows. You can do so much on your own, even though I know there are immense obstacles sometimes, I am convinced the Ghanaian people can set its will t o build what they need, by themselves.

I like reading comments like this - sometimes we need foreigners to make us take a 2nd look at ourselves. There's no doubt that the Mahama govt is doing NOTHING but, to your point, it's a bigger issue than Politics. We, the Ghanaian people, are largely to blame for our issues. We have SO MANY smart people, SO MUCH potential but we're always looking for external help and we're sometimes so full of ourselves. I'm beginning to see a trend, we all come here and vent but we never want to take the actions to see to change. If we want to focus solely on politics - who voted in the Mahama govt??? Ghanaians did and if the SC declared a re-run, Ghanaians are so fickle that we'd vote for him again. Each of us, every single one of us, can make the change by taking baby steps to stop all the stuff we abhor and vent about, regarding the happenings in Ghana.

FROM 1957 TO 1966, THE CPP, NKRUMAH'S PARTY SHOWED GHANAIANS THAT HE WAS A COMMUNIST, A SOCIALIST, AND IMPRSIONED ALL THE OPPOSITION MEMBERS AND UNDER HIS POLICE, ILLITERATES RULED GHANA. FROM 1966 TO 1989 MILITARY RULED GHANA WITH SOME CIVILIAN ADMINSTRATION INTERPOSED HERE AND THERE. WHEN JJ RAWLINGS KILLED THE LEADERS IN THE MILITARY AND SOME JUDGES THE NATION HAS MOURNED SINCE THEN. Ghana should have listened to the British. After all the British left Ghana under the CPP and the UP; the two political parties the struggled to rule Ghana. Now with the British gone we are back to CPP and the UP clothed as NDC and NPP

As for Rawlings growing up from a single family unit when poverty was staring him in the face . He never thought of making under tree education a history and sadly when Kuffour too came he just focused on himself and self gratification with golden medals whilst these vulnerbale children were still shivering under the trees when the weather of cold and and missing education which could have changed their lives in society. Kuffour and Rawlings are just some years away to heaven so I am pleased. This is because they would need to answer for the neglected vulnerable children left under the tree until schooling there currently.

I have never begged any politician to be a politician especially John mahama. I want to see leadership not cheap talk

Dont compare countries which had their independence centuries ago with African countries which are in their fifties.Though Ghana is not there yet, lets not throw up our hands in despair.Ghana is on the right path right now.The country needs smart leadership in all areas of governance. The infrastructure deficit tends to overwhelm the elected officials hence their inability to make any significant impact by the time their term of office is over. The country needs a development plan which has to be implemented by all who come to power.

well written, hats off for you. I personally don't know why ghanaians still celebrate this day because there is nothing to show for .This is like a kid at shool who manages to fails all his exams and still comes homes to show his results without shame and still demandes recognition amongst his friends and family. look, i never seen so much neglegence in government. How come these politicians sends their families outside the country to be treated whilst the poor one goes to their clinics for chalk commonly known as "para" for their treatment of cancer and for other serious deseases.
These politicians spends huge amounts of money in ghana on useless things instead of investing in the future of the country .The ghanaian politician will rather buy ambulances than build a hospital in their region and since most of us are illiterates we still cheers them up and votes for them forgetting then fact that these ambulances are not meant to save our lives but rather to help our families carry our dead bodies to the cemetery.
i really don't see why we still have politicians acting like this and why we still support them and honor these fools with v.i.p status. I PERSONALLY CALLS THEM V.I.P MEANING "vagabonds in power.
