Religion is a weapon of imperialism as it was a weapon in the hands of the monarchy before, a robe that capitalism took from the system it vanquished and still wear. No European humanist spoke against the spreading of the Abram religions to Africa as they spoke against the spreading it in the Pacific.
From the book of Exodus one can realize at once that the Abram religions are not religions of peace, though they say they speak for peace. That uncompromising dislike for what religion other people want to have was displayed by Moses who want people to bow down only to his god, and not even the God that people use their hands, communal labour and unity to create. Thus that peace fleeted as soon as Moses destroyed Ball and murdered his followers. The conflict in the Bible between Jews and others was about the Jewish god and his supposed superiority over the gods of others.
Thus the peace of the world can no longer hold as soon as Abraham declared his god higher than that of others and forbid them from having the freedom of conscience. The peace of the world can no longer hold as the assault on the freedom of conscience was an assault on man and his creativity, dignity and self respect. The anarchy of monotheism was then loosed on mankind. The centre which was human and individual creativity, his ability to perceive and create his own god in his own image was destroyed.
The English King Richard declared the crusade war for what he said was to preserve the tombs of the saints. In 1979 the Mudzhahedin was created by NATO to fight the communists Ali Taraki and Nadzha Bullah to enable Islam to rule Afghanistan. The creation of the state of Israel was to enable Zionist to have their own state.
The attack on Iraq and her occupation was to eliminate the involvement of Sunnis and other minority religious sects in ruling that country.
The spring revolutions in Arab Northern African countries was to establish Islamic states through the force of arms by NATO in that region of Africa.
Boko Haram and other extremist Islamic terrorists received and still continue to receive training and financial support from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
NATO again found the separation and independence of Southern Sudan which they supported and armed based on religion. Thus whiles NATO supports extremist terrorist Islamic groups in Northern Africa it claims that it was against Islamic Northern Sudan.
There is even an absurdity that whiles the U.S. government did not abolished the Catholic Church there for sodomising boys and defiling girls it pushed the hand of our legislators to outlaw Etroxovi, upon mere suspicion that the priest have been defiling girls under their apprenticeship.
Thus if NATO does not ferment and feed religious extremism for its own financial gain the situation will not be there. Let NATO put and end to its promotion of religious extremism and there will be peace in the world.

I totally agree with you on this one. I have always known that the religious doctorine that says we should seek spiritual solutions to all our problems is actually stiffling knowledge growth in africa.

I beg to differ with the author of this article on the pathogenesis of the religious intolerance in Africa. The fact that religious intolerance has a long historical and seemingly intractable nature, and has been ubiquitous ever since there was a place known as Africa, may need us to examine the problem from another perspective: bibilical.
I will premise my comment with this text: "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil" (John 3:8).
Religious intolerance is a sin, and a crime against a segment of society.
Sin can be traced to the devil.
"Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity (sin) was found in thee" (Ezekiel 28:15).
Kicked out of heaven because of insubordination, "wanting be like God" (Isaiah 14:14), he decided to be an enemy of God and man (when created, Gen 3:15).
"And there was war in heaven: Michael (Christ) and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:7-9).
In Eden God gave an injunction to Adam and Eve they "...may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it... lest ye die." (Genesis 3:2-3).
The peace and heavenly favor of the unfallen holy pair (like that of the second Adam when he came to our world) had aroused the hostility of Satan. He made it his determined purpose to make them sin, lose their Edenic home, and be like him. He succeded by causing Eve to doubt God's word, and believe in the contradiction of God's word.
"And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:4-5).
The temptation was about a posture of a relationship to the revealed word given to Adam and Eve, the truth about creation and the conditional injunction versus a posture of relationship to the sophistry (a faulty reasoning) of satan, a fallen foe.
The temptation and fall of Adam and Eve teach us to develop a relationship with revealed bibilical WORD, and stand our ground during temptation, religious intolerance included.
Religious intolerance will always be here, and it will head towrds its climax as we approach the closing scenes of the earth's history. God wants his children to be faithful to his word. He has promised he will destroy Satan and his children.
"For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch" (Malachi 4:3).

I don't know how some people think. How do you believe religion is causing lack of development. My prayer is that the God which you discard will open the eyes of your understanding to know that greediness of Africans and lack of genuine love is dragging Africa backwards not religion. If we have God fearing people in Africa we would not face what we face. If few so called politicians have sympathy for their fellow brothers and sisters they will not in the case of Ghana steal 80million dollar worth of Gold for the whole country to themselves, give 50million dollars to one person without a written note. We should stop blaming Religion and think about our greedy and selfish life style. It is always I, me and myself. Wicked people. Look at the roads we drive on, electricity in our cities, our water supply. I am using GHANA as an example. God has blessed us with all resources possible to make us happy. Don't blame Christians and Muslims. Blame your corrupt administrators. 2Chronicles 7:14; Read the Bible that is a manual for human living.Think Right.

There is no need to engulf oneself in a religion, cuz they're man made.
Religion of any kind, I mean, all of them are orchestrated by man. A god has nothing to do with what goes on in this sinful world.
Otherwise, this god, as the almighty,
the alpha and Omega, omnipotent and all the admiration man has been forced to honour, worship, a creator of the earth we've been told he/she is, would have prevented all the atrocities going on, in and around every facet of our world's existence, especially sick innocent children, starvation and diseases, disparity in race and wealth could have met his sympathy since we pray to him everyday of our lives makes it clear that, no such thing exist but simply, a figment of our imagination.
There have been a never ending problems of the world.
