Prof, you have made my day and I am glad yours was the first article I read. The problem I have with Ghanaians who use "protecting morals" as a basis to breach the human rights of people in same sex relations is that, they really do not know what they are talking about but just use that as an excuse for their homophobia.

First, morality is subjective. What is moral in one society could even be illegal in another, such as polygamy, which morally right and acceptable in Ghana and some African societies but illegal in most western societies.

Again, whose morals are they talking about? In fact, what is morally right and acceptable could also be contradictory in that same society. For example, it is morally wrong for married couples to cheat in Ghana. Yet polygamy is acceptable. How realistic could a man with a first wife take a second wife without cheating on the first wife, since most marriages begin with a relationship (often intimate)? In other words, polygamy encourages cheating in marriages. So there lies the contradiction in issues of Ghanaian morality and cultural prcatices.

Last, morality cannot be legislated so those who claim that Ghanaian law prohibits homosexuality if your defence is morality how would you legislate against something that is immoral in your eyes? Homosexuality is not a moral issue but behaviour, life style and society or the state has no right to determine what two consenting adults can and cannot do in their privacy. What about heterosexuals who practise anal sex? Is that moral or immoral?

There is something we call common sense and moral values which every society has its own. It is true that homosexuality has been with us since time immemorial but this does not mean we should accept and promote it. There are people who are born klleptomaniacs. Does it mean we should accept and tolerate those practices? Let the West where homosexuality is frowned on by many do their gay things and leave us alone. Even in the West, people who are gays/lesbians are picked on amd sometimes beaten by people who see such practices as deviation from the normal.

The Western world engagement with Africa had been one of abused from the era of slave trade (African young males were raped from the African shores right through onto the plantations) to the contemporary. The notion of so-called HUMAN RIGHTS was conceptually an impossibility to be conceived by the Europeans then during the SLAVE TRADE. We are still experiencing its effect 600 hundred years ago. The universalization of cultural practices of so-called superior race (Aryan) Whites has been a construct for which the lesser human race according to your standpoint must subscribe, however subtle is it coated (aid, food, loans for liberalization of homosexuality in Africa),with human rights as cardinal reason.
Homosexuality is a European cultural practices and since its practiced by human beings, any human being under enabling conditions can become susceptible it. Many Africans see the posturing of the West in relation to homosexuality as an attempt to impose this abnormal practice on us or least adopt a liberal attitude which in time will be accepted or tolerated. Your India example is instructive. Africa has its own negative cultural practices, and homosexuality is not one of them, at least not one of the originals. Perhaps there is context of counter-HUMAN-rights, which clearly is missing in the imposition of homosexuality in Africa even if it’s virtual debate. The right to not be the other is missing. Africans have the right not to be your other.
Homosexuality has its origins in Greece, the epicenter of the so-called European civilization. When Greeks went to ancient Egypt (Africa) to study they were informed of the cardinal African principle that defines our world MALE & FEMALE, principle that must be in balance. Nowhere was homosexuality encouraged. That is not to infer that the Ancient Africans were unaware of possibility of this abnormal sexual condition (from an African perspective and by no means a universal one). Indeed the West with all its scientific development has refused to conduct research into homosexuality to ascertain whether it’s hormonal or otherwise imbalance. You may draw the conclusion.

In Greece homosexual love for boys was not only aristocratic phenomenon but popular, in 507 BCE, democracy was introduced in Athens there was increase of pederasty and other homosexual representations, it became more popular.
It should be added that for Plato, the only type of real love is the love between two men, and he has dedicated two of his dialogues to that subject: the Symposium and the Phaedrus. After all, homo-erotic love is related to education and gaining knowledge and this makes it superior to other types of love. Africa in general is one of the least innovative continents where we see the most immoral things take place. It also happens to be one of the most homophobic. What does this tell us? That we are a continent of immoral morality- allowing the strangest of double standards to guide us. I have met Ghanaians who actually think it is okay to rape small girls because it is 'hetero' but not okay for two grown men to fall in love because of the 'sodomy'. We really need to grow up as a nation and get our human rights priorities in order - until then,we will continue to experience a brain drain, and our home-grown innovators will go to the sort of liberal countries where people are willing to think a little out of the box.

Shakespeare wrote personal love poems to men; in some of his plays women transform into men and back again; in others we see homoeroticism. It's obvious to anyone who has actually read Shakespeare and understands it.

As for your suspicions, I really do not care if I have to be honest; I am straight, but the lack of logic or compassion on this issue irritates me. Real men who are straight cannot have their sexuality threatened because they are 100% confident in who they are.

It is these same human rights developments; that started to come to fruition in the late 1960's that not only made life more tolerable for black people and women in the west but which also kick started the gay rights movement.

Innovation and development did not stem from allowing 'gayism'(!) to flourish... rather it is obvious that innovation flourishes in societies where people are treated well by the government; and whose rights are protected in so far as their rights do not harm the rights of others. Gay people do not harm the rights of others in so far as they are in consensual relationships with other gay people. Yet Ghanaians screech about them in a way that they do not screech about wife beaters, or child abusers or people who kill their own disabled children because they believe them to be spirits. The immoral morality...yet again.

Ghana needs innovation and development for this simple reason: people are not going to be nice to us forever, Ghana cannot be a charity case forever. Many countries that innovate and develop liberal social policies do so not just as a consumerist nicety, but to further their defense agenda and give them clout on the world stage. This for example was how the internet was developed, why the space race was so frenetic etc.

If Ghana does not keep/attract benevolent innovators, does not become the place that such people want to live then come the next Nazi or colonial world power it will be toothless, and it will be weak.

Africans do NOT subscribe to that habit. On the other hand though, Africans are liberal to ploygamy, a practise which is conversely NOT ALLOWED by law in the West.

While Africans have respected the western gay ideology, and had NEVER for once tried to disturb that belief prevalent in their society, or attempted to impose polygamy on them, the West on the contrally, keeps tying "human rights" to the practice of homosexuality, and trying so hard to impose that lifestyle on Africa. This forced imposition in itself has human right ramifications.

We must be very careful when we begin to argue that the West are champion of Human Rights, because they're NOT. When in the early 20th century Yaa Asantewaa, a woman was at the war front fighting alongside men, the West had NOT YET considered women as persons/human beings to begin with, let alone conferred on them a tittle of Commander-In-Chief to lead a war. So, Africa and the West, which society is more civilized, open-minded/liberal, inclusive and humane?

By all means people/citizens MUST be treated well and equally before the law. However, we MUST be careful not to take HUMAN and BEHAVIOUR as synonymous. What I mean by that is that, every one's humanity must be respected, but behaviours that are deemed INAPPROPRIATE by a PARTICULAR society MUST equally be DISCOURAGED. It's (based on this logic and) their disbelief in polygamy that the West has DISCOURAGED polygamy till to day. So tell me, why cann't Africans treat homosexuality similarly? Why is it that Africans' insistence on maintaining their disbelief on homosexuality is seeing as a human right violation, but the West's insistence on disallowing polygamy is not?

There's nowhere in Africa that we find innovation being discouraged. And homosexuality,like polygamy have NOTHING to do with liberal democarcy or human rights or innovation per se, but everything to do with behaviour. And when it come to BEHAVIOURS, it's up to a particular society to determine according to their written or non-written values, which one is deemed acceptable or otherwise abominable. This has no bearing on human right but the general harmony of that particular society.

In certain cultures, dogs are delicacy, and in others, beef. Now if one society consider cow as sacred and therefore don't eat beef, but dog meat instead, yet the other society consider dog as pet or man's 'friend" , and so don't eat dog meat, does the society that eats cows and keep dogs as pets, have ANY RIGHT to tie eating dog meat to inhumane issue? Don't you think the society that eats dog meat will fire back to the beef eating society that cows are also considered sacred in their society, so eating beef is equally abominable? In order to avoid possible conflict, each of these societies MUST respect the other's belief.

What will give Ghana/Africa clout on the world stage lies in scientific research and innovation, and none of them have homosexual practice taking a role. We should not continue to maintain the colonial mentality that "development" will come from innovators from the "outside", possibly from former colonizers and therefore we should accept them and all their twisted cultures and beliefs as well!!

May the Lord Almighty's WILL be done. May He continue to bless Ghana/Africa!!!

This is a great idea however Ghanaian liberalism needs to counter more than homophobia. I feel that Ghanaians will only know how to approach this issue once they have developed a strong sense of childrens rights, environmental rights, solidified the rights of women in rural communities, and also stomped out some of the harmful, superstition-based practices that take place. The rights of homosexuals in Ghana will organically emerge once Ghana has a more sophisticated take on universal human rights.

Still, I like the idea of the Ghana Alliance of Liberals.
