I think that every worker has the right to use any legitimate means to have his concerns addressed. When my eight month old son cries I knew he needs something if not hurt, that is his way of protesting and asking for attention or something. But sometimes its get a little irritated if can't figure what the child wants or do not agree he shd have what he is crying for. Comparing it to the doctors strike action, I think the doctors issue have not been put into its proper perpective, various questions need to be ask and properly answered in order to make progress.
1. What is the doctors current market premium and allowances
2. How much are these in monetary terms per month?
3. How much are they asking for in monetary terms?
4. It is something the country can afford and what will be the implication for other health workers who may come looking for higher market premium - Of course people will cite the gangantuan salary increase for article 71 office holders to justify the doctors action but I dare say that all unjustifable quest to hold the nation to ransom and make the poor to pay for the action and inaction of the elite is so wrong.

Prof. Akosa is right that Doctors should not hold the poor Ghanaian hostage and that their target should be those in Authority who have engaged in feet dragging over the past several months.
The Doctors, action to me, is a desparate move to get them heard.
Must it come to this? Why could Govt not treat this matter with dispatch as it did in the case of the parliamentarians? Being a Doctor and a Politician, Prof. Akosa is on either side of the issue. Prof,. you have told us what the Doctors must not do and I agree, particularly, as strikes hurt innocent people and those whose conduct occasions the strike are somewhat insulated from its ill effects. What do you propose the Politicians must do in this instance to mitigate the situation?
Agitation by subvented organizations for more money became a matter of when, and not if, upon the approval of the pay hike for parliamentarians.
I am not suggesting in anyway that Parliamentarians are not deserving of the compensation package they now have. The phrase 'equal pay for equal work', I am sure, applies to Doctors and parliamentarians alike.
WHO IN GHANA WOULD TELL ME THAT THE WORK OF A PARLIAMENTARIAN IS MORE IMPORTANT OR MORE DEMANDING THAN THAT OF THE DOCTOR? But that is what the respective Compensation Packages seem to be suggesting.
Did we not govern Ghana for years without a parliament? Can we, on the other hand, have a Ghana without Doctors?
Now, there are more people in Ghana wanting to be Parliamentarian, not for the Public Service element of it but for the freebies. Apart from this handsome salary you get committee allowances, get to travel in business class and the Doctor travels coach.
So therefore, when that Freshman Doctor who works about 12 hours a day, can be called anytime in the night for duty finds himself perching with a friend or colleague for a while and makes 1,500 cedis a month but his counterpart freshman parliamentarian receives a whopping 50,000 cedis for super annuated rent and collects 7,300 cedis at the end of each month, and would not even show up in parliament for the average 4 hour work day, or when he shows up he is seen dozing or contributing little to the work of the house, then 'Equal Work for Equal Pay' becomes meaningless.
Yes, The Doctors were educated at the Taxpayers' expense. But so were the Parliamentarians and us all. Yes, it costs more to train doctors, but it is only when you have excelled that government decides to spend more on you to become a doctor.
Must we push our doctors to leave the country for better conditions of service? Doctors have that option to exercise.
Parliamentarians do not have the option of going to parliament outside Ghana and this seriously constrains their market value.
The 'Free Money' must not be shared among people doing little or nothing in political positions while those who opt for Real Public Service are paid a pittance.
I am sure if the average Medical Doctor is paid what parliamentaians make, he will LAUGH ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK each month, will never dread being called in the middle of the night for an emergency and the Ghanaian patient will be the true beneficiary of quality service

When will we Africans learn?
Doctors are accorded acolade and treated with respect; some people actually will do almost anything to become doctors, just for that.
I am sure their living conditions are way above many in the civil service and to pay back the respect people have for their profession, they must be seen to deserve it, by not engaging in such actions that will lead to the deaths of many.

One thing is sure, it is God who heals. Thumbs up to Prof Akusa. We are fed up with these stikes. These Doctors have no moral right to embark on these useless strikes. No well meaning Ghanian would support them. Are these not the same doctors who use governmet paid time and facilities enrich themselves by charging for their private pactice? Th govt should do the right thing by not paying their salaries during the these protracted stike periods. The BMA should be footing those bills. WE ARE FED UP WITH THEIR HOLDING THE POOR CITIZEN OF GHANA TO RANSOM.

even if u describe yourself as one thing turned another it won'tgive u any right to describe the prof in those terms! show some respect, but above all learn that one can be many things at the same time! in that sense it would have been more acceptable to describe the prof as a "pathologist and politician!
