Agitation by subvented organizations for more money became a matter of when, and not if, upon the approval of the pay hike for parliamentarians.
I am not suggesting in anyway that Parliamentarians are not deserving of the compensation package they now have. The phrase 'equal pay for equal work', I am sure, applies to Doctors and parliamentarians alike.
WHO IN GHANA WOULD TELL ME THAT THE WORK OF A PARLIAMENTARIAN IS MORE IMPORTANT OR MORE DEMANDING THAN THAT OF THE DOCTOR? But that is what the respective Compensation Packages seem to be suggesting.
Did we not govern Ghana for years without a parliament? Can we, on the other hand, have a Ghana without Doctors?
Now, there are more people in Ghana wanting to be Parliamentarian, not for the Public Service element of it but for the freebies. Apart from this handsome salary you get committee allowances, get to travel in business class and the Doctor travels coach.
So therefore, when that Freshman Doctor who works about 12 hours a day, can be called anytime in the night for duty finds himself perching with a friend or colleague for a while and makes 1,500 cedis a month but his counterpart freshman parliamentarian receives a whopping 50,000 cedis for super annuated rent and collects 7,300 cedis at the end of each month, and would not even show up in parliament for the average 4 hour work day, or when he shows up he is seen dozing or contributing little to the work of the house, then 'Equal Work for Equal Pay' becomes meaningless.
Yes, The Doctors were educated at the Taxpayers' expense. But so were the Parliamentarians and us all. Yes, it costs more to train doctors, but it is only when you have excelled that government decides to spend more on you to become a doctor.
Must we push our doctors to leave the country for better conditions of service? Doctors have that option to exercise.
Parliamentarians do not have the option of going to parliament outside Ghana and this seriously constrains their market value.
The 'Free Money' must not be shared among people doing little or nothing in political positions while those who opt for Real Public Service are paid a pittance.
I am sure if the average Medical Doctor is paid what parliamentaians make, he will LAUGH ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK each month, will never dread being called in the middle of the night for an emergency and the Ghanaian patient will be the true beneficiary of quality service.

If you decide to go on strike it means you are prepared to take care of yourself until the strike is over, you don't expect your salary if you are on strike.
Paying people on strike is what is motivating every idiot to get up and call for strike knowing very well they will get paid no matter how long they stay away from work.
How can a poor country like Ghana continue to pay people for no work done such as these doctors who supposed to save lives and the NPP MPs who refused to work but not only being paid but are rewarded with huge rent allowances?
We need to be bold to stop all these strikes which is destroying the country, nobody is against them asking for better conditions of service but strikes as bargaining tools are destroying the country.

I think the government is too lenient with these doctors. The issue is that they provide essential services and for that matter they are not permitted by law to go on strike. What are we seeing now? I think for the government to solve this problem once and for all is to sack all the doctors and employ expatriate doctors from Cuba and elsewhere to hold the fort while efforts are made to get their replacement. After sacking them, those who are interested in serving mother Ghana without threatening strike here and there will be made to re-apply. Do the doctors know what will happen to the country if all essential service providers decide to go on strike? Let the VRA, ECG, Gridco, the Military, Police, prisons, Fire Service, Water Company, Farmers, the Judiciary, Caterers and the rest go on strike and let's see if the so called doctors alone can function. NONSENSE.

I am amazed about issues concerning salaries, wages or allowances of our political leaders and the way they are handled. Any adjustment in what they think they deserve seems to be automatically accepted by all Ghanaians without attracting a single opposition. I wonder if the so called labour experts such as Austin Gamey and others only studied to to make spot on diagnosis on only doctors whenever they talk about their plight. What happens to the MPs who gets paid and since their elections into parliament have decided to boycott almost every duty of theirs? Because doctors handle cases that has links to our emotions we think they should never make their problems known and fight for what they deserve. To you that is suggesting that all doctors should be sacked and usher in foreign doctors,I hope you know what you talking about. A whole medical officer takes a salary far below $1500 a month. Think of what you will have to give to this your recommended foreign doctors.

I will always stand by my words and say those greedy and selfish doctors are overpaid yet they don't do anything because they don't know anything. I don't agree to the astronomical salaries of stupid politicians (they are the same every where)but I don't think these doctors have a case because they are already overpaid. I am amazed when ignorant people argue for their family members because they assume that being a doctor means you must be treated as a demigod (as Ghanaian doctors like it). They are overpaid. A fresh graduate from medical school (junior doctor) takes much more than he/she deserves.

When allowances ,salaries and bonuses of politicians are announced,I try hard to hear the public objections especially when MPs that we spend all nights queuing to vote into parliaments to contribute into steering the affairs of the country decides to boycott almost every duty of theirs,Ghanaians still finds this satisfying and therefore endorses that( silent means consent) . When doctors registers their displeasure it is met with public uproar. Politicians have made the whole country into believing that the whole country's money is paid to doctors which is far from so. A medical officer who has graduated from a medical university and has done a 2 year practice as a house officer takes less than $1500 per month. Is this what we Ghanaians termed as overpayment and therefore go ahead tagging doctors as greedy? Instead of we Ghanaians taking our time to look into issues,we base our emotions on hearsay and roar at them as if because they are doctors they should not complain at all. They are saying since 2011 since they embarked on the strike on issues concerning the SSSS,they have never been attended to,which of us will be able to swallow our displeasure taking into reckoning what they go through. They have denied themselves of all weekends ,all holidays even to the extent of attending church services all because of serving us,why should not this people ask of the token they deserve. Empathize with them or stop casting insults of no basis at them

I DON'T THINK THE MPs DESERVE TO BE PAID THAT MUCH WITH ALL THE ALLOWANCES... BUT CAN THE DOCTORS TELL US HOW BAD THEIR CURRENT REMUNERATION IS? Its all greed I guess.

Politicians have succeeded in making Ghanaians believe that doctors are the reservoirs of the country's funds. A fresh graduate from the medical university affectionately called junior doctors take home salary is $850 per month wholes a whole medical officer who after. 2 years of practice as a house officer takes $1200 per month . Judge for yourself,is this what politicians have made all of us into believing that our doctors are overpaid? And why is it that as a country,we keep mute whenever there is an increase in salaries, allowances for our politicians who are just known of boycotting almost every duty of theirs? Doctors deny themselves of weekends, and almost all public holidays with most of them working more than 12 hours a day. Do you really think this people deserve what they are asking for or they are sheer greedy?

I think from now on those that seek medical education in Ghana should have no subsidies from the State; they should pay the equivalent of medical education elsewhere like in the USA, then after their education they can choose where to work and what benefits and entitlements they want from the people.

The medical school is called "kokofu ball". You need to have an uncle or grandpa, or father who graduated from medical school to be offered admission. Go there and the names there are same as the names 20yrs ago. They want to feel important so enroll very few people who are trained to believe the nation depends on them. I've been in places where doctors, engineers, scientists, admin staff get paid on experience and not career titles. In some places, doctors are as ordinary as other professionals and not the demigods we have in our country. The reason is simple. they have lots of doctors so if you are not happy, quit and others will fill your position within 48hrs.

Shame on all amassing the country's wealth for themselves beyond what their children's children's children will ever need to live on like kings and queens while the poor continue to suffer. I wish the doctors would not go on strike as the poor suffer the most. Ghana needs strong institutions, not selfish leaders. Why do we continue to face such problems govt after Govt. Now power cuts and water shortages have been added to the mess! Let us stop talking politics and hold all we elect into power accountable for the smooth running of Ghana's affairs. visit the hospitals and see for yourselves the broken down equipment. Monies, laptops, 4x4s given away to buy votes could repair and equip hospitals. I am referring to all politicians so no one should dare attack me or label me, until like me you have had to rush a relative to a major hospital only to find that doctors do not have equipment needed to save lives. Doctors please continue to dialogue but have pity on the poor. We shall continue to pray for you all and the nation,

Governments must be careful in directing their attention and interest to paying of salaries across the country for public workers. Every worker in Ghana deserves a good pay, Doctors I am surprise are demanding for more pay, cleaners who clean their offices/consulting rooms before the consult should also ask for salary increment. Workers in Ghana are still paid as low as 400 Ghana Cedis, some take 70 Ghana Cedis home after paying loans contracted to pay other services. I know a messenger who takes home GH¢70.00 every month. How will this worker live, and Doctors can not sacrifice. Look at the MP's, greed is taking over in the country.
