Dear Gideon, Sanitation / Littering in Accra -- Come again Gideon , it's the whole Country -- it's pathetic for the Capital of the Country. Ministry of Health - Environmental Dept.- Local Govt.& other Institutions all live in other planets-- is it !!!. The Country Health Laws shelved & the Environmental / Sanitation Officers in-effective hence the filthy - stenchy - unsightly surroundings ---- i don't think the answers spelt in ur blog is the proper one though it's nice Some one like u is worried & concerned.I think Parliament should pass the Health Law to enable the ordinary Health Officers have the Power to go about their work without fear or favour as Health Officers are even to prosecute offenders but ask me who are u to arrest an offender if one is not a Police Officer & even Police are known for what they do best.No action language well rehearsed--Get time & parade self at the corridors of Local Govt. Environmental Dept.& the Magistrate Court & take plan B & u'll see a transformation in our surroundings -- Go round the Capital City & u'll see where defaecation & Littering like Drains & Gutters full of incombustible items... In Western World -- Dog Owners instantly remove pooh from the ground & dispose of in provided Containers. The whole Country is crying of indiscriminate disposal & the Government un-concerned & it's only the Almighty Mercy Intervention which one way of the other no outbreak fortcoming judging the health hazards that is in the air -- The Government to Equip the Environmental Officers the tools & incentives to carry these obnoxious attitudes.Gideon u've a point please help bring co-ordination of all Agencies & Accra & whole Country be a livelier lovable better place to habitate.Take the Party in Power & the Leaders & tell them ----

Ama you make some good points. U know, how many of our elected officials and top Govt officials have been visiting Rwanda and fail to notice the cleanliness of Kigali and other cities? President Kagame's govt banned the use of plastic bags and satchets and yet our political leaders and paliamentarians lack the courage to help keep our cities clean. The latest attempts by AMA executives of both NPP and NDC have been thwarted. What a pity!

Nii Commey: I won't disclose your age but remember when Accra Municpal Council had "Town Council Tanklase" staff? People ran helter skelter to keep their environments clean or face summons. The filth problem was manageablel bcos of the population size and discline within the communties. Today the population explosion coupled with corruption at all levels makes the sanitation issue almost impossible UNLESS your previous suggestions of turning waste to power is tried on a pilot basis.

Educating people is so vital, but in Ghana (Africa)for who we are, unless there's a complementary LAW that comes alond side the public education and must be enforced, there is no way we can overcome this social canker.

I have suggested that vehicles that stop to but from street hawkers need to be fined.
There should be only one newspaper/candy stand in any residential or business street corner (i.e. a convenient kiosk store)
Tro-tros should have only one single stop within every street block. Abolish tro-tros in the capital and use only metro transport.
The solutions are there, are the enforces able to suppress the unwilling masses? That is the power and role of government to keep large masses of people under control, not the other way round.

Educate, educate, educate!
You are doing the right thing Onyemi Gideon by helping to educate people about our garbage problem. As I see it, Ghanaians would not cease littering because we are essentially ecoilliterate, it is unfortunate that both the leaders and the followers lack environmental awareness; truth be told, we as a nation don't know much about ecology and environmental science. Let's face it how many of our primary, secondary and tertiary institutions teach these subjects? We give too much attention to petty politics and rushing to media houses to make worthless, charlatanry speeches calculated to put someone down instead of worrying about cleaning up our act literary and figuratively.
When Brazil built the Eco-city of Curitiba, the mayor ordered all the schools in the city to teach ecology. Now Curitiba is one of the most livable city in the world: no garbage problem, effective mass transit, no air, nor noise pollution. (Please Google Curitiba)
In conjunction with the press and the media houses, the AMA and the mayor could organize regular mass education campaign to
give tips about recycle, reuse, reduce, how to compost, and environmental health.
