British court convicts arms dealer for selling Chinese fighter jets to Ghana without valid licence

An international British arms dealer who sold military aircraft to Ghana without a valid licence has been sentenced by a British court after hardcore investigations conducted by the Her Majesty Revenue and Customs (HMRC) of UK.
The British Guildford Crown Court on January 31, 2013 sentenced Mr Christopher McDowell, 55, from Oxfordshire, to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years, and 200 hours community service.
According to the HMRC in a statement February 1, 2013, Christopher McDowell who is also managing director of arms brokers Wellfind Ltd, made over $4 million from the unlicensed sale and shipment of two of four K-8 trainer/light attack Chinese jets from China to Ghana which was in breach of UK trade controls.
“McDowell was convicted of two counts of being knowingly concerned in the unlicensed supply of goods subject to trade controls contrary to Section 9 (2) of the Trade in Goods (Control) Order 2003,” it added.
The court found McDowell guilty of two counts of dealing in arms that were being supplied to Ghana without a valid licence.
Narrating the case, the HMRC said in June 2005, McDowell entered into an agreement with the China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC), to sell military aircraft to the Ghana Air Force and he intentionally ignored the requirement to have a licence.
It wasn’t until February 2007 that he submitted a licence application to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – by which time the first two of the aircraft were in the process of being supplied.
“With many years’ experience in the industry, McDowell knew what he was doing and illegally brokered the aircraft to Ghana without a valid licence. HMRC will find people who, like McDowell, decide to break the law and we are delighted that, after an extensive investigation, he has been brought to justice,” Peter Millroy, Assistant Director, HMRC was quoted in the statement.
McDowell is reported to have at least 25 years experience in the arms trade business

I remember there was a story of government contracting about $300m loan with the middle man pocketing 10% of this same loan we want to use for a project. I just hope this administration will not follow its predecessors.

Why should a british be a go-between dealer between Ghan and China.This is simply because our diplomatic missions and as such the ministry of foreign affairs need a total overhaul.Our diplomatic missions were left out when we Ghana was doing Structural Reforms. All they do is to continue forwarding letters to the ministry some as irrelevant as possible. Besides most of our diplomats forgot that they were posted to their various Missions first and foremost for the sake of the State called Ghana and not their personal business. But it is sad. Ghana is suffering.Diplomats won't attend events to brif government properly,they avoid being seen, how can you penetrate the host country for intelligence purposes? Some of our missions are just hemmed into offices as the usual civil servant in the ministries and as a consequent feeding the necessary state apparatus with second-hand irrelevant iformation.How come we won't go to buy made inChina jet fighters through a british arms dealer when we have an Embassy in China? Our diplomats travel without knowing any part of their host country because they are held-up in their offices as battery chicken. Working from morning till evening. Thus from Mission to the house, back and forth. By these archaic behaviours, our diplomats cannot have even time to benefit to learn a language of their host country where they have served for 4 years. What a waste! Because thei office working hours is just as in the Ministry in Accra. What is this nonsense?! Whereas dipolmats in our country in Accra are mostly free from 14h00 and they go around collecting necessary information making friends for the beterment of their country we come to their country and closed in as chicken in a battery cage. The earlier our foreign ministry wakes up to modify things the better for our beloved country!

We actually speak our various Languages our communities and homes, but english is sadly the language we have to learn, write, read and speak well if we want to climb that ladder in life. But no matter how good of a lawyer, an engineer and so forth and so on you are, we shall never never be accepted as equals. not even our light skin brothers and sisters.

All over Africa, we are so hospitable and it coursed us as a nation, the Portuguese still have their language and their scars on us in Africa, the arabs spread their religion and language which is still causing great deal of confusion and killings in most part of our beloved Africa and the world today, the english brought with them their english language and christianity which has also brain washed us to forget about our own ancestors. So you see how the Islam and the Christianity got us so good, so we as fellow humans on this planet earth don't see the need to be grateful to our ancestors through whom we are here.
